My favorite pet supply place. They carry so many better brands of dog food than you find in the big chain stores, and their prices for what I buy are sometimes a full $4-5 cheaper than other places. They carry pretty much everything a dog or cat owner could ask for, including food, toys, leashes, supplies, treats, costumes, etc. The owners are also about as nice as they come, so that's a plus. read more

The parrot has only said hello to me once. I feel unloved. But Woofie and I like this place; lots of safe toys, a useful selection of collars and leashes, rawhides, and foods. It's a very mom and pop(or just pop) shop, and the guy is always friendly and accommodating. And my favorite thing about this place: no hidden rodents and reptile sections! read more

I am a bit of a cat food snob. I wrote that and realize it sounds like *I* eat cat food. Things haven't gotten that bad. But I believe that feeding your pets is like feeding yourself: if you eat well, you'll (probably) be healthier in the long run. I'd rather spend money here than at the vet's. I could go places that are closer to my house, but I usually get my pet supplies at Pet Supply Outlet. Here's why: (1) This place has a good assortment of very high quality pet food. For the most part, you can't go wrong with the brands this store stocks. (2) One of the guys at the store told me that you can return food if your cat won't eat it. My cats are on the see-food-and-eat-it diet, so I've never tested this policy. I like that that's an option. Cats can be picky! (3) Prices are competitive. They price their canned food slightly lower if you buy a case, but they allow you to mix and match. If it's 12 cans to a case, you don't have to buy a pre-packaged case of all turkey. You can mix it up with different varieties. (4) They stock my cat litter of choice, too. One stop shopping. (5) TONS of toys at good prices. They don't stock some of the fancy-schmancy, pretty, brightly-colored toys that the chain stores do, but... Your cats are probably going to play in that empty box from your Amazon delivery, anyway. read more

Definitely my new go-to pet supply store! They had everything I needed from high-quality cat food to nail clippers, flea prevention cream (only $10 for four months!), and a mat to catch loose litter. Their prices on toys, grooming supplies, etc. really can't be beat, and the selection is strong. For upscale pet food, it's the best. It's a little bit further for me to go, but it's worth it to support a locally-owned business. The people who work here are always really warm and friendly, and, as an added bonus, I think they actually have the best prices by a fairly considerable margin. Plus, it's only 2 minutes by car from the Cambridge PetSmart. read more

This is a great little store, which has moved from its Alewife parkway location just a bit away in Belmont. They used to have fish at the old store, but have since pared down as one of the previous posters noticed. We went in today looking for cat climbing furniture for a new kitten. WOW--probably some of the best prices we've seen so far for scratching posts, kitty condos and the like. We're talking $30 for furniture that would cost you $150 at Petsmart. Maybe we lucked out and hit a sale but wow...what a deal. Their selection for other things are smaller at the new store. For example we'll probably hit up Petsmart for a cat bed and toys because the selection is broader, but we'll definitely be back for cat food moving forward. They sell organic food as well as Science Diet and other standard brands. Prices are great and the staff is very very friendly. And while their huge parrot didn't say hello to us he did wave!! read more

Whenever I visit my family in MA, I always make it a point to visit this store. The prices are quite low compared to many places in the DC area, and also lower than some online discount stores! An added plus - the owner and staff always add free samples to my purchases - if they don't, be sure to ask, as they always have a large supply of samples! Speaking of the staff, everyone that I have interacted with has been extremely helpful and kind. As someone who likes to peruse around and take her time checking out the latest and greatest in items, I have never felt alienated in the store and also enjoy stopping by to say hello to the store's parrot. "That sweater puts the class on our dog's ass!" So I went here after going to Newbury Comics the other day with Jesse, who only came in because we were hoping they had puppies inside. No puppies, just a giant parrot. I wanted to find a sweater for the dog, becuase it's getting cold, and her little dog ass gets cold in the winter when she goes outside. I found one, but not before Jesse was making jokes about dog sweaters. It was reasonably priced, had a good selection (lots of toys and treats) and the staff was very friendly and it's all around a good store. read more

OK, yes-- the parrot is a little creepy. He scares the bejesus out of the gf every time we're in there because she forgets he's there until he says "Hello" disturbingly close to her head. But: The staff is great-- they're always ready with a pat and some cookies for my spoiled little monster. The selection changes it's sort of like a TJ Maxx of pet goods but (at least on the canine side of things) it's always pretty good. Also, they always have the organic food we feed the dog (wysong) and for much less than anywhere else. The last review says almost exactly what I wanted to say. But of course I'll add more..... I have to give this place some serious props. they have a really good selection for all animals. And none of the crap, all good healthy stuff. They are also the only lace I can find that has the one cat toy that my cats just go crazy for. I also have to say that I am petrified of birds. I don't know why, but their parrot does totally freak me out. If it' not in it's cage I have my daughter ask them if they can put him in before I come in. They comply with an understandable snicker, but are very kind over the whole thing. I know I am a freak, but I like that they are nice about it. Also, the place doesn't smell as bad as most pet stores and I like that I support an independent place and not a big chain. read more

Love this place! The owners & staff are fantastic & really helpful - but not in an overbearing sort of way. The store is well stocked and you will never leave empty handed. Plus, they take special orders if you need something they don't usually carry. Nice! The prices aren't too bad for a small, premium store and they have parking. This store is deceptively large. We just started shopping here a month ago...and I'm beginning to suspect everything in this place has been road tested...to the point where each cat toy from here is a winner. Conversely, I'm talking cats, so, of course no place could stock a complete complement of acceptable foods. They have high quality grain free fare, but a cat's palate is specific. Anyhow, it's not a problem because they will easily allow exchanges for other flavors,etc. The people here are kind and helpful, we much prefer giving them our business over the big chains. And they are open seven days a week so any pet purchase emergency can be fulfilled on the very day it occurs. read more

I like this place a lot, and happily give them my business, though usually Animal Spirit will win out. The one thing that annoys me is that their prices aren't actually very low, though they call themselves a "closeout" store. For the same products, I pay basically the same prices at Animal Spirit (they might end up being a penny or two cheaper per can of cat food or something). They do have a pretty good selection of a lot of products, and some stuff that's both good quality and cheap, such as kitty litter. I'm not crazy about stores selling animals at all, and they do have fish, but to their credit it's only fish, and they generally look well-cared for. The staff who work there are helpful, but usually only to the extent of whether they have a product and where, and when certain products will become available (e.g. Merrick's dry cat food line, which hasn't been released yet). I've tried to ask them questions about differences in certain kinds of products, and they couldn't give me a lot of info on that - but to be fair, a lot of people in retail aren't that rabid. When I lived really close to here, it was definitely a regular place I shopped. Now that I'm a couple miles further, I generally just go if I need something while I'm also making a trip out to Whole Foods. But I still recommend this place as a good locally owned business with a great array of products. Definitely choose it over the (animal-vending giant national chain) PetsMart across the street! read more

We do like this place a lot...and their new location is right across the street from our doggie day care, which makes it even better! They carry our dog food (Canidae) as well as a big selection of foods. Their prices are good, their selection is good, and they are open pretty good hours. I wish they'd stay open a little bit later because sometimes we need to do a dog food run after work and just can't quite make it there by 7pm, but that's probably our fault for not staying on top of the food situation. They would have 5 stars if they had a better selection of toys. We still usually go to petsmart for toys because they just have soooo many more. Maybe they will get more now that they're at a new, bigger location. I've just tended to see a lot of flimsy rubber toys and cheap stuffies, both of which won't last too long with my mouthy dog. PSO remains our #1 place for dog food, and that makes them pretty important to us! read more

I found a paw protection product on-line, but I the S&H was too expensive for a small order. I couldn't find the product at Pet Co. and other large pet stores. I didn't expect to find it at Pet Supply Outlet Store because of its size, but surprisingly they had it in stock. The salesman was very friendly and knowledgeable. The product was much less than what I would have to pay if I ordered it on-line. By the way, the paw protection product is called "Musher's Secret" and it's nontoxic. read more

I love this place! I think it's one of the last mom and pop shops around this area. They carry a wide array of holistic pet food and always have what I'm looking for in stock. Plus they have snazzy light up dog collars! Their prices seem lower than most in Cambridge, though I'd be ok with paying a bit more to support a local business. I got a hot pink day-glo dog leash here several years ago that is so bright that people still assume my very obviously male dog is a girl :-). read more

Great selection of quality cat food, some of which you can't get elsewhere. Friendly staff who will put stuff aside for you if you phone ahead and will check suppliers to find whatever they don't have in stock. I also love the fact that they are currently selling face-masks made by a customer, with proceeds to a local foodbank. Real community spirit that I an happy to support. read more

good selection of treats for cheap. i wouldn't buy a dog bed or anything from here, but i was always pleased w/the selection of food. they actually have quite a few varieties of holistic dog foods and treats. the only thing i didn't like about the place (like others have mentioned) was the scary bird that wanted to talk to me everytime i went in. i am DEATHLY afraid of pet birds. read more

I get all my cat supply needs here. I favor the ma-pa shops over Walmart or Target, and this place is perfect. Prices are reasonable and you're helping out the community rather than boosting a stock price. Edit: Oh noes! Drove by the area and there is now a PetSmart right in the plaza across the street...boooooo. Edit #2: They're getting specialty cat foods here that PetSmart won't carry. Great selection of foods, toys, and other supplies including a complete line of Lupine collars and leashes. Prices are low and competitive with the big-box pet supply stores. Very helpful customer service. They sell a line of squeaky dog toys that my dog likes and on the couple of occasions that they've been out of stock of the particular one that is our favorite they've special ordered it and had it in stock within a few days. The employees are friendly and whenever I go there with my dog they always give her a free treat or two. read more

They are slightly more expensive than some of the bigger stores, but they also carry brands that nobody else has! Several of their brands are local and they're the only one around that carries Weruva cat food. I usually only go here for cat food and get litter and toys elsewhere, but when I do stop in they always have a great selection. The staff has always been very friendly and helpful. Great selection of high quality foods (Canidae, Wellness, etc.). But no Innova--Animal Spirit has the lockdown on that. They have a wide selection from good, wholesome food and treats and Petco-type stuff. Where they're lacking, in my opinion, is in the medical supplies and treats. I ordered a custom tag for my dog here in August. The person working said it would take 2 weeks. 2 weeks pass, no tag. 3 weeks pass, no tag. A month passes, no tag. I call the number on the receipt I was given and the person who answers the phone tells me I never placed an order (or PAID) for the tag (oh, and i DID). one star for being the place where i found my dog's favorite toy. and i'm being generous. read more

This store is super convenient to us, since it's literally about 100 feet away from where our dog goes to doggie daycare. They have an extensive range of dog and cat toys, food, and treats. I love supporting small businesses when I can, so I'd much rather come here than a big box store, and they have all the same products. I also love visiting the resident parrot that lives here! I've found the staff to be helpful and friendly, and I never hesistate to ask questions of them. read more

My dogs love to shop here. They run down every aisle and sniff everything. The staff is always attentive. Petsmart doesn't have the selection of quality foods that PSOS has. My dogs love the attention and cookies they get here. It's one of their favorite places to visit. read more

This place is great and even better since it moved, now I don't have to go near Freshpond circle. We buy our cat's food from them. She has to eat wellness canned food b/c she is diabetic. Wellness is pretty expensive to begin with. and we buy in bulk. Pet Supply Outlet is at least $5.00 less than buying from Petco. They are always very friendly too. read more

About once a year I remember that I've forgotten this wonderful place. It's such a great alternative to the big box stores - PetSmart and PetCo. I went there with a friend today to get a litter box, and while they didn't have a huge selection, what they had was fairly priced and of good quality. At $19.99, the litter box she chose was head and shoulders above the one she'd paid $26 for at PetSmart the night before, which was defective and missing its filter. (Kudos to PetSmart for taking things back without a fuss.) PSOS has a wonderful selection of products for cats, dogs, and birds. Maybe fish too, but I don't remember! And there's a fun thing- a fantastic parrot in the store that talks! This is a place with charm and character, and a knowledgeable, friendly staff. read more

Whenever I'm at this local store I always get a huge greeting from the staff, as well as their bird! You can get anything in this store from small trinkets to large crates and best of all, they work! All the products are high functioning and the staff is a delight to be with! This store may be small in appearance but, large in customer satisfaction. read more

In addition to the outrageous prices, beware of the attack dog allowed to run free at Pet Supply Outlet. I was calmly perusing cat toys, and it came out of nowhere, barking crazily, startling me so much I screamed. I received no apology. The clerk called the dog away, but a minute later, let the dog come up to me while I was looking at cat food. He didn't call the dog away until I yelled at it to go. If I hadn't been too sick to get in the car to go the 1 mile to PetSmart, I would have left to never return. I told him that not everyone appreciated being attacked by a dog, and his response was that we surprised each other - WRONG! If a customer clearly does not want your dog around, keep it behind the counter until the customer leaves! Better yet, do not have an ill-behaved dog in the store! read more

Really great selection of high-end, grain-free, good-for-your-pets pet food, and tons of other fun stuff for little critters. When we got a new kitten last November, we stocked up here. Prices are reasonable, staff are sweet and knowledgeable but give you your space. Definitely beats big-box shopping! read more
