I was looking to set up my aquarium with live plants, small fish, shrimp, and snails, so this review will mainly focus on that. I'd been to another Petco and pet store, and I was happy to find this location had the largest variety of plants, decor, shrimp, and snails. When I went, they didn't seem to have many guppies (at least I wasn't shown them), and they didn't have any endler guppies at all (healthier less inbred than regular guppies). I ended up getting a few different plants and so far they seem to be doing fine. The staff member/aquarist Grace was very knowledgeable and friendly. She patiently answered all my questions, and I could tell she was passionate about taking care of the fish and plants. I separately had placed an order online for pick up, and she forgot to include an item, but I managed to get a refund on the product. Overall, I think this place has many strengths in having a variety of aquarium and plant supplies, plenty of live plants and snails, different colored shrimp, and seemingly every other fish except endlers. The staff I interacted with were friendly and very helpful. I thought the place was as clean as it could be although there's definitely a strong pet smell. If you order pick up, double check all your items are there. read more

The aquatics guy is very kind and knowledgeable, but this is the only good thing I can say about this store. The animal care is subpar, dirty cages and tiny "desk-top" tanks for the Pac-Man frogs. Bettas are near dead or dying each time I go in. You either need to find the cashier yourself or stand there in an empty store until someone comes to the front. To be clear, I don't think this is an issue on the employee end, but rather petco cheaping out and deliberately understaffing the store. This company certainly can afford to hire people to maintain the animals AND manage the registers, they just don't seem to view that as a priority for some reason. This store is the WORST, point blank. I went there today for the doggie taste test of Justfoodfordogs food at 2-4pm and the table was set up for a few different flavors and types. So I waited around with my franchie to have her try some and after asking a few workers and one I had an argument with finally the "manager" came out about 2:20pm and opened one package of turkey food after I had to address her to see if she was the person running the table. Then she just walked off without a word and left me standing there wondering if she was opening something else or giving me ideas on how to serve it with other products. But NO she walked off and once I found her I again had to address her and ask her was she going to open anything else so my dog can try it since I was the only one who showed up to this bogus taste test and she replied no. So I told her this was a waste of time and I walked off after standing there like a good 40 minutes thinking she was going to open something else and offer some helpful information to feeding my pup. This Petco is seriously the pits. More than once, we've placed an online order for something relatively urgent that showed it was in stock and the payment to go through, only for us to go to the store for pick-up and, not only is the order not ready, the employee sheepishly tells us they don't actually have it. Talk about inventory mismanagement. Also the place manages to somehow be both under- and over-staffed. There are employees milling around but good luck getting someone to actually help you out with what you need. The staff here are too busy chatting or playing on their phones to look up and see a long check-out line forming. Our last time, the girl on the counter spent ten minutes playing with the puppy and its owner in front of us, including taking multiple photos. Yeah, I get it - the dog's super cute. They waited until we requested for help to tell us they're stopped selling animals . The short guy with glasses about my height was extremely rude and had no desire in helping me or my sister from the get go . Only but one of the staff member who was outside of the establishment told me which door actually opens properly while the other staff were having personal conversations. This Petco location is the closest to my house and I can easily walk there whenever I need something, so naturally this is my go to place. I always check online to see if it is in stock before I walk over, but when I get there it is no where to be found. I've asked employees to check in the back for me and here was my experience: one employee said it's sold out without even checking, and assumed it was sold out because there was none on the shelves. Another employee did "check" in the back, but said it's somewhere in their shipment and they'll finish unpacking it by tomorrow. I'm not coming back tomorrow because it's more convenient for you. It's also different items that I'm looking for every single time and it always says it's available in store, but it's no where to be found when I get there. Since I always check online for the items before I go into the store I always see that these items are on sale. Great! I love when I buy things marked down - EXCEPT when I pay for it in store it rings at full price???! I also don't pay attention when I'm paying for my stuff, but I SHOULDN'T have to. If it's being advertised on your website it's on sale why isn't it ringing on sale? I suggest you order online, and pick up in store so you can get the sale price, and not waste your time looking for something that isn't there. Sorry Petco, but my visit to the store yesterday was disappointing: I haven't been to this location in at least 10 years, but the Beloved Goldendoodle needed food and my delivery from Chewy (hint, hint: order from Chewy and get your food delivered. Well, your pet's food) might have been slowed down, so I checked online to see if the two things I wanted were here (transiting to a different taste now, so needed two small bags to mix new with the existing bag). I placed the order and received notification that it was ready, so I was relieved the one thing worked out for me. I didn't see any other customers, but I still stood at the register and waited while two employees were in the office chatting, one of whom was looking right at me as she just sat there. She could have at least said hello and said that someone would be with me shortly (or come out herself?). Finally an aggravated looking girl came over, no greeting at all (figures) so I said hello and said I was there to pickup two small bags of food. I asked if she needed the order number, all she said was "nope, just an ID". So I pulled out my license (which didn't look like me a year ago, and right now is pretty much irrelevant for everyone since we are all in masks and bundled up for winter) for her and she didn't even look at it. No "thank you" from her either, but you probably saw that coming. The good news is that my Chewy delivery will be here today so I can return one of the two bags I bought... no need for me to spend more $ here than necessary. They're a bit understaffed so the was a long line and it took a while before the next cashier was opened up. They had a limited variety of items as I was looking for a litter box and scratching post for my kitties and there was about 2-3 types of each. The price tags are higher than other places so I'd recommend weighing other options if you're on a budget and not in a hurry. This review is specifically about the aquarium/fish section at the Brighton/Allston Petco location. The good thing is that employees were friendly and easy going, and they were easy to find. That said - we noticed that even though they had a good selection of fish - they were not separated by male and female, and the staff was not knowledgeable enough to tell them apart, telling us that it does not matter. Also, we found quite a few dead fish. About one dead fish per 3 aquarium tanks. When I inquired about the reason for that, the answer we got was "Fish just eat each other sometimes, and we remove the dead ones when the store closes. This was followed up by a (good) suggestion, to "quarantine them, and they should be OK" So, I am not even comparing this Petco location with specialized aquarium stores, but am comparing it with other Petco locations, specifically one in Dedham, Needham or Westwood, which are all many heads above the one I am reviewing here. read more

This place is hit or miss. Unfortunately, this means that I cannot rely on them to be helpful or a service I can rely upon. A few days ago I got my son a toad. The toad loves to eat small crickets, which can be found at Petco for 12 cents each. I went in to Petco two days ago and asked them if they had a reliable supply so that I can feed the toad in a consistent manner. I was told that of course you can rely on them. In fact they get crickets in once a week so there's never an issue. They then sold me 15 to start so I can gage how much to feed him. Then tomorrow I can come back and get what I think I need for the week. The next day I show up as discussed and I'm greeted my new employees who tell me that they are 100% out of crickets. I go to find something else and what do I find? About 1000 crickets just as there was yesterday. I let the cashier know and she goes to her manager who tells me that unfortunately they only get crickets once a week and they need ALL of these to feed their own reptiles. I try to explain that I was here the day before and was told that I'd have a supply and she just repeated they are only for their animals and maybe I can try next week. read more

Poor service. Went to look for a decent fish that's easy to maintain and the fish representative recommended for me to buy a betta fish. I asked him about one and he said that it would be fine despite its minor skin issues. Well 6 hours later and it already died. I purchased a 2.5 gallon tank with a filter like he recommended and all the proper food and water solutions and followed all instructions using proper measuring spoons and even conducted water tests. We wanted to get a bottom feeder for our tank (which we have done plenty of research for) After waiting for 20 minutes we got "help" from a young male which was an interrogation about the size of our tank and fish (which would be understandable if any of his facts were accurate). When we told him our fish that we own right now he ridiculed our tank size saying " I would have never sold you that fish and that it NEEDS a 72 gallon tank also mixing it with any other fish should NEVER be done. Our current fish is only going to grow to less than an inch and everywhere else has said that in a ten gallon tank we could fit three of the semi aggressive fish. He then denied us any service. We went to a different store and got a bottom feeder which our semi aggressive fish does not even seem to care about nor has shown any aggression towards. read more

This petco is now the site of an event that will go down in history as one of the wildest customer service interactions I've ever had. I stopped in this afternoon to grab a few cat toys and treats. The store itself was a little disorganized which isn't a big deal, but it did make checkout a little confusing. We waited for quite a while for the sales associate to finish a conversion with the person in front of us, but again, not a big deal. They seemed a little understaffed, so it happens. But the interaction took a turn for the bizarre when we finally got up to the sales associate, an older woman with pinkish-purple hair and, at first glance, a fun, whimsical vibe. Sadly, the interaction that would follow was anything but. While I unloaded my basket, she asked if I had a phone number with petco. I only stop in once every blue moon, so I don't. She then asked for my name and number to sign me up for a membership. I politely declined, which wound up being entirely the wrong answer. This associate acted like I'd called her mother a slur. Her tone became outright aggressive as she insisted that I was making a mistake, as I was losing the chance to save money AND I would have to bring a receipt if I wanted to make a return (you know, how returns usually work). I again politely declined, which seemed roughly equivalent to backhand slapping this woman in the face based on her reaction. She repeated the same spiel about saving money and receipts again, and when I again declined, she became extremely agitated. She snapped at me for setting my basket in the wrong spot, saying I was going to trip someone. When I apologized and moved it, she scoffed at me like I was the world's biggest idiot. All the while, as she scanned items, she slammed them down on the counter without asking if I needed a bag. A friend I was with then nicely asked if we could get a bag, to which the sales associate wheeled on her and snapped, "You can have a bag _if you request one_." We then requested a bag. Wrong move. She all but threw it at me, and I had to try and scramble to pack up my items just to get the hell out there before she elected to behead me and leave my skull on a spike as a warning to others about the consequences of refusing to join the petco rewards program. The whole time, I was feeling my fight or flight response bubbling up, which is a deeply weird sensation to experience at a Boston Petco on a Saturday afternoon. Ultimately, after frantically packing the bag with my items, my friends and I left in a state of shock. It was genuinely one of the most bizarrely rude and aggressive interactions I've had in my entire life. Don't get me wrong, I worked retail for years and know customers can be a lot, but literally all I did was not want to sign up for a membership. I took my new 6 month old puppy for grooming at this location. She receives all her shots here and previous service as well. This time around was different. While waiting almost 4 hours. The manager Brianna was on her phone half of the time. Upon entering no professionalism. Did not greet me or the customers after me. However, the other two stylist remained professional. Brianna however, was so aggressive with the puppy. I literally had to go inside as I was beyond livid and address her. The other employees were shaking their heads in disbelief of her behavior and whispering sorry to me. They didn't want to address her as she was there manager. I did not allow her to finish the grooming and took my puppy as she was traumatized at this point. I requested after still paying for my services to speak with Stephanie who is her manager as I was advised. Stephanie immediately asked if I paid for the service. I advised her it was not about money. It was about the aggression in the department with the puppies who someone they trust to treat our animal family like family. Based on the other stylist this seems to be Brianna's daily attitude within Petco. This is a serious matter and advised Stephanie to run back the camera in the room as this was beyond unacceptable. She seemed to be listening however to nonchalant as if this was not the first complaint from Brianna. I will reach out to corporate as this employee needs better training or a different profession if treating animals with respect and customers is a priority when in service. read more

My sister and I decided to try this location as we were in the area. I attempted to call three times, but no one picked up. We stopped by anyways and asked for a walk in appointment for nail buffing. As we arrived, there was one person grooming a dog and two people behind the cashier on their cellphones. Come to find out, the employees were busy on their cellphones and chatting to one another rather than doing their job. We scheduled an appointment and Dayanara G. informed us it would take fifty minutes. Personally, fifty minutes for a five minutes procedure is ridiculous, but he needed it and we were already there so we opted to wait. Thirty minutes go by and I asked how much longer we had to wait in hopes of a cancelation - no luck. Fifty minutes pass and we're finally called. Surprisingly, Dayanara offered to buff his nails. We noted in advance that he typically does not like getting his nails buffed and will cry throughout the process, in which he did cry and squirm after we waited nearly an hour. All in all, I would not return. If they were super busy and everyone was working as they should be, I think I would've had a reasonable experience. read more

Highly, highly disappointed with this location. First of all, they never seem to have want we need in stock. I have been on several occasions to find they don't have the specific Purina Pro kibble I'm looking for. It's not even an uncommon type. And it's not due to a supply chain issue because I've had no issues getting it from Chewy or Amazon. Their online stock supply is never up-to-date. There have been multiple times I placed online orders for pickup, only to have them canceled because it wasn't in stock. To make matters worse, sometimes I used my Pals Rewards on the pickup orders so I would have to call Petco corporate to add those back to my account - they don't reimburse them automatically. I pay monthly for Vital Care and am supposed to get Pals Rewards, so why it is such a pain to get them refunded is baffling to me. I noticed the store always has tons of palettes of unpacked stock, which makes me question if anything ever makes it to the shelves. This location is also absolutely DISGUSTING. So much dust, dirt, and grime on the floor. I can't begin to tell you how many times I've had to grab clumps of hair or pieces of debris out of my dog's mouth. There is one person we see in grooming that we like and our dog seems to cooperate with, but other than that, going to this location is a negative experience. read more

My worst customer service experience ever. We went to Petco today, hoping to get a fish for our neighbor since one of her fish just died and wanted a new friend to swim amongst her other ones. She said that we can get any community fish that lives in fresh water. They have one unhappy looking guy working at the fish area, who disappeared as soon as we showed up. We waited over 15 minutes for him to come back and when we approached him for his help to pick out a fish, he told us "You can't buy fish as gifts, go buy a gift card". I then mentioned that we are actually also looking to have a small fish tank at our home since my daughter loves the neighbor's fish tank and we often go to the fish area to look at them after shopping there. This person pretty much assumed that I was lying and started to interrogate me" now you want to buy fish for yourself? Do you even have a fish tank? If you do, what are the dimensions of your fish tank? If you want to buy a fish, go get a tank first and plug it in for a week before you come back and buy a fish..." His tone of voice was very rude and offensive, as I was not familiar with any laws or practices regarding ownership nor were there any signs or information about it. I am not sure if he treats all customers like this or just me because I didn't know much about fish. Afterwards I went to talk to the store manager about my experience and the way we were treated and suggested they should have a sign up for all customers to know that they can NOT buy fish or any animals as gifts. The manager seemed nice, and she apologized about our treatment but then told me that "we have the right to refuse any sale." This made me a bit confused as to why she would say that to me. I understand that they want to protect all those animals and find them good homes, but to try to justify the behavior as part of their policy really left a bad impression overall. The store in itself seems to have a lot of products in stock ( for dogs) unlike the Petco in Waltham. However - I witnessed an interaction between a customer and a colleague/manager that just screamed unprofessional. The customers dog peed on the floor (not alarming it happens) this colleague/ manager treated the customer like a criminal. She told him he can pick it up and proceeded to coach the cashier on how customers who's dog piss in the store can pick up their own dogs piss. As someone who worked in the pet industry for years, this was not only unprofessional but just a poor attitude. I was senior leadership and I would still stop to clean up a dogs mess, it's for the greater good of the store and customers appreciated it as they were already embarrassed it happened. While there I also witnessed a colleague drop a Chinese water dragon on the floor, granted these guys are fast and are difficult to handle- I suggest you host another training on proper animal handling. My dog came​ in with long hair and I was charged for long hair treatment. Though I understand that she had knots in some areas, I am not sure saving her was the best option. They was certainly​ a miscommunication between groomer andI,​, as of my​ expectations​. I was very disappointed​ ​ and had no other choice but to deal with it, as she was already shaved. I feel as though, with a ​little bit of patience and the will todetangle​a​e couple of knots, they would have been no need to shave my poodle. I really wish I'd gone to Yelp before coming here for grooming. For starters they opened the door ten minutes late with a swarm of people outside. They had clearly overbooked. They were absolutely not prepared to deal with an excited puppy. For one thing the atmosphere was one of the worst grooming setups I've ever seen. I felt uncomfortable leaving him there, but we told ourselves they were professionals. Nope. Ten minutes in we get a call saying they can't handle him - the woman on the phone even told us he bit the groomer. When we clarified in person we found out that he did not in fact bite the groomer - can you imagine letting pet owners think their dog bit someone? We were beside ourselves and then it turned out nothing even happened. This wasn't our first choice for groomer but we expected a minimum understanding of how to work with animals and communicate with customers. Do not see DAYANARA at this petco groomers! Not only did they not complete ANY of the services asked for, they charged me for services that were not done! AMELIA the manager was beyond rude and unhelpful! As I walked into the salon I was very specific about what I needed done around my dogs face, nails, top of his head in order to get him looking nice and fresh before a trip to New York, walking into petco to pick him up in a rush to head out of town (he was there for 3 hours) and nothing I had asked for was done. Walk up to the register getting charged about $70 with services, material fees, and tax... I asked the cashier if I was being charged incorrectly and she told me I wasn't. I paid, left and as I got home I noticed his nails weren't done, his face was not cut at all, the top of his head wasn't cut and nothing I had asked for had been done.. went in to talk to them and they refunded me $11 for being "incorrectly charged" as they charged me for the wrong "cut"... i will include pictures from the before 2 days prior to his cut and two days after his "cut" with time stamps! read more

I recently had my Maltese groomed by Sean. He was excellent! This is the best puppy cut our little guy has ever received in his 4.5 years. In addition, he is beyond scared of getting his nails cut and can be pretty bratty in that situation. Sean did a great job and kept him at ease. He seemed perfectly happy when I picked him up. Will definitely be back soon with both of our dogs! As for the main store, it always has what we need, especially dog food brands that can't be found at Target, etc. read more

I went to Petco inquiring about a pet fish. I hardly received any help because of "not enough help" actually a customer helped me find an easy care fish. However my tank I bought developed a leak. I exchanged it. I quickly had to put my fish "Lady" in a pot while I hurried to the store which had the wrong operating times posted online. I came back home and set up the new tank putting "Lady" in. I realized there was no heater. Lady was looking ill the next day. I called the shop and they informed me I had a 30 day return policy but no advice to save "Lady". I guess they thought it was comforting to know I could bring her dead body back for another fish. She succumbed to her trauma. They should have sold me a heater with the new tank. I told them I was a new fish owner. A little better help/advice may have saved my "Lady". New fish owners really do need more help in all aspects. I now know Youtube is better. read more
