I contacted Vera when I moved to Boston with my then 6-y.o. large rescue dog in 2018, as she was still grappling with some of her demons. I'd worked with other positive behaviorists before, so I knew what we needed, and wanted to have a reliable support in our new home. We scheduled an in-person assessment to introduce my partner to my dog's behavior and to problem-solve some logistical challenges that came with our new living situation (building and neighborhood). Vera was patient, direct, and appropriately cautious with my dog, who has fear-based reactivity that can manifest as aggression. She helped us develop a meet and greet protocol so we could have guests over to our house (a major issue before!) and accompanied us on a walk to assess our leash walking skills, giving us lots of helpful tips on the go. I highly recommend an in-person assessment - you get a lot out of it. After that, we attended her reactive dog class, which gathered 6 dogs max outside in a park every weekend to engage in low-risk training, leash handling, and communication. As the only form of socialization (distanced, at that!) with other dogs that my dog had, this class was invaluable, and I appreciated the opportunity to practice reactivity management in a controlled environment (this is almost impossible to find otherwise). When we moved indoors during colder weather, it provided a novel setting for the same skills. If you are feeling plateaued or stuck with your reactive dog, or want a safe and proactive maintenance class to keep your communication up, OR if you are bringing a partner into your dog's life who isn't as familiar with their issues, I can't recommend this class enough. In summary, if you have a challenging relationship with your dog, practice is the only way to make progress, and Vera is a great coach to have on your side.

There is no better way to describe Lance and his two other trainers as miracle workers. I have a…read more1.5-year-old cattle dog/husky mix who is extremely fear reactive. It was impossible to walk by other dogs without a huge scene or even people without him growling. Baths and nail cutting were out of the question as the local groomer told me to never bring him back, and when I attempted, he would become aggressive towards me. I have always believed in Kevin and thus have been to A LOT of trainers in search of helping him reach his full potential of being a great dog. Away from his fears, Kevin is the sweetest dog. The number of people who told me he was "incurable" and that I would have to simply manage with what I have the rest of my life left me deflated and hopeless. Then I stopped to chat with a woman who was walking her German Shepherd one day and she told me I had to go see Lance. A week later I was sold. Lance has been a blessing. He has achieved more with Kevin in a matter of months than others said Kevin could accomplish in his entire life. While Kevin still has some work to be done, he now can walk by dogs without a scene, LOVES pets from people and even just this week had his first bath and nail cutting without any issues. Kevin's sister is another shining example of Lance's work. She was returned to the rescue by a family who said she was heavily resource-guarding and acting aggressively. My mom adopted her but was worried she was too much to handle. Since working with Lance, Luna is a new dog and easily the best dog my mom has ever owned. It is not just Lance's abilities to train dogs that are so incredible, he is also there for the owners. He understands and allows us to speak our minds and even vent with frustration about the different obstacles we have faced during the training process. He is ALWAYS available to the owners and truly loves what he does and the dogs he works with. I really cannot say enough great things about Lance and his team. If you are struggling with your dog, Lance is the answer. I rarely write reviews but this one was necessary because I empathize with the difficulty of finding great trainers--Lance is beyond great.

With both dogs it was clear that Lance is some sort of dog whisperer. He always seems to know how to respond to the dogs in a way that will correct the behavior, and he did a great job of explaining the corrections to us so that we could try to understand how to best manage our dogs while on walks, in our homes, interacting with other dogs, etc. When we first started our classes with Lance he stressed the importance of training us (the humans)--and I think he does a great job of trying to train us in addition to the dogs. We always looked forward to our classes with Lance and enjoyed seeing the progress made by our dogs. There is nothing better than saying "down" from across the room and having your dog plop down in the blink of an eye. If you want someone who not only knows his stuff, but knows how to impart important tips to the dogs' owners, Lance is your guy. PS: make sure you come to class with jokes :)

Later, as he entered adolescence, he became more reactive to his environment. Janet taught us additional techniques and recommended a relaxation technique that has significantly reduced his level of anxiety in new situations. We highly recommend Janet for anyone looking to work on their dog's behaviors. She is extremely knowledgeable and a pleasure to work with.

I honestly thought the best I could get with him was half of that! She even taught Tessie to be less demanding (anyone who knows Tessie, this was amazing, she is seriously THE Queen) I'm sooooo happy! Obviously I'm a bulldog parent, they are quirky, stubborn and way to smart to be trained, however Janet knew exactly what to do with them! I called because my baby, Alfie, who just turned one started jumping and nipping his dog walker... we needed to nip that in the bud right away! Janet knew exactly what to do, she even had his dog walker stop by so she could see their interaction and helped both of them learn how to have a better experience! Janet truly is a dog whisper! She really loves dogs, understands the breeds 'quirks' she knew exactly the temperament and personality of my bulldogs! I can not recommend her enough! After watching our friend communicate with his dog using an e-collar, we decided to sign up for off-leash e-collar training with the Good Hound. We worked with Shannon and Siobhan and now feel fully prepared, confident and so, so proud of our pup who we can let off the leash at any time. The Good Hound was the best investment we could have made with our dog for many reasons: 1) They take the dogs out for hikes - giving them a bunch of exercise during the work day and a lot of opportunities to socialize with other dogs. 2) They spend time 1:1 with your dog to get a solid grasp of what they are capable of. In our case, they learned he was not a "working dog"; in other words, he tends to be very lazy and extremely stubborn. 3) They work with you, on what YOU need to practice with the e-collar and on communication with your dog. 4) The trainers LITERALLY go the extra mile. Shannon was so patient and sincere with us; even when we were discouraged by the lack of progress. He even asked if he could take our dog for another trek to further assess his response to recall, and came back with more insight, techniques for us, and a thorough follow-up plan.
