This is THE BEST pet store. The owner of the store has several of his own dogs and tests out all of the toys he sells; there isn't a huge selection but based on the type of dog you own he can tell you which bone or toy will entertain your dog for the longest amount of time. While I was in the store another customer came in to find cat food for her cat that apparently wasn't eating it's food, he gave her a free sample so that she could keep trying until she found something her cat would eat. He knows dog breeds and which food is best for which dog. When my dog was sick he not only sells the sweet potatoes that make dogs feel better instantly, he also went next door and bought yogurt because he said that would also help her stomach. If you want a pet store where the employees actually know about pets and can recommend items based on experience, not just point you in the direction of where they are...this is the place to go. When I moved into the neighborhood, I was overjoyed at the prospect of having such a close pet store, as I wanted to get a dog. I went here to get all of my puppy's supplies before I brought her home and afterwards to get some toys. The store is really nice and they have a lot of organic dog and cat foods and lots of good toys. The problem I have with the place is the owner- or manager- I have tried really hard to forget his name because he creeped me out. He took too personal of an interest in me which at first I thought friendly but then realized it was a little overboard and he made very inappropriate comments to me and about me. Needless to say, I take my business elsewhere. Even though the store I frequent is not as close, I don't have to worry about someone making me feel uncomfortable. This manager thinks he knows everything about dogs - and yes, he does know a lot; however the food he recommends, while REALLY good is also REALLY expensive. That said, my dog doesn't eat cheaply - she eats Wellness brand - but he was adamant that she needed to be on the priciest feed there was. I guess he needs to be reminded that not everyone wants to be his best friend and sometimes his opinions/thoughts are better left to himself, especially when it's not about pets. read more

I brought my dog here for grooming by Amanda and left with my dog having a big hole in his leg. The groomer said he already had the wound and she treated it for me. I was skeptical but took my dog and left. Ended up taking him to the ER vet late that night and then resulted in him having surgery a few days later. Do NOT take your dog here. Plus, the desk guy is extremely unhelpful. read more

OK, So we're new to this area so we took our family dog here to get a groom for the 1st time. He's a 6 year old Lhasa Apso, to give a good idea of his size and style one would expect from a groom. He came back from the groom with hair that was completely uneven, a horrible razor burn cut under his chin and his face and ears were not groomed at all. OK, had the Manager (the weirdo creep other mention here) been congenial, heard our complaints & refunded us the $80 (an outrageous price for this groom), I'd have written a review that reflected good business management. However, the fact is the "manager" was rude and uncooperative. The groomer, poor girl, is just not a good groomer and blamed our dog's "hair" on why it took her so long to groom him. She told us he was biting her which is either a lie or she was handling him roughly which is possible because he kept backing away from her when we went in to show them the issues and get a refund. We've never had ANY groomer ever complain about this dog, in fact, the opposite, the last groomer from upstate NY wanted to adopt him. The groom was incomplete, our dog has a gaping weeping cut from razor burn, the hair that was cut is a total chop job and most importantly, the manager is a complete creepy JERK. Oh I should also mention what a DUMPY HOLE the place is. I shudder to think how our dog was treated behind that sheet that says (groomer area) in the back. read more

The ABSOLUTE WORST business practices I have ever seen! The owner is pushy and gets way too personal, and is blatantly inappropriate. I bought from here a few times, because it is right up the block from my apartment, and he has a good selection of organic and holistic foods, but it is not worth the convenience. Two weeks ago, I went to purchase Acana for my dog, the owner told me it had been recalled because of mercury in the fish from the Gulf, he also stated that Gov. Paterson's dog died because of Acana. He told me I should buy another food from him. I didn't believe him and did some internet research and did not find any such information. I called another store downtown, who said they had the food in stock, and confirmed there was no such recall. They said it is sometimes difficult to get supplies of Acana and stores can wait up to 13 weeks and maybe that was the owner's reasoning. This store charged $58 for the same 29.7lb bag Pet Paradise charges $80 for!!! Yesterday, I saw the owner of Pet Paradise and he asked how my dog was and what I was feeding her. I told him I found Acana at another store, for significantly cheaper and would be buying form there. He started yelling and demanded to know what store and stated that he is supposed the only supplier and he will make sure to have the other store's supply "cut off." I was infuriated by his behavior. He lied and slandered a good product to try to get me to buy something else from him, and then made outlandish threats. I reported him to Champion Pet Foods, the makers of Acana and I want to warn others in the area. He is overpriced and his business practices are down right scary! Don't fall for the convenience of location, many pet food stores will deliver in the city for free. read more

I've been to this petsore 2 times. I have a better one close to my apartment but this one is right by John Jay park where my dog likes to walk and so on the way home she pulled me into this store. The first time the owner/manager made me feel really uncomfortable with his smart ass attitude,making me feel stupid because i feed my dog home cooked food.(I mean,i cook for her instead of giving dry food. So i cook her beef or chicken with some veggies,because i want to see what she is eating) You can hear so many things,depends on who you are asking. My vet said different things than someone i know who owns 4 dachshunds. So it's all about how people feel what's best for their dog. So anyway,he was just pouring his advice on me even if i clearly startd to feel uncomfortable. But after we left the store (paying 13$ for a small bag of duck breast which i thought was way overpriced) i didn't think about the experience anymore. Until yesterday when my dachsen pulled me in. And there was the guy again. Within 30 second he started to pour his knowledge on me,telling me how i make a mistake by feeding my dog my home cooked food and all together i started feeling like a stupid person who is abusing her animal and i started to explain myself. But than i realized what i'm doing,i mean who is this man (with a mullet) telling me what i should do and how? Who are you to judge me? I just wanted to slap him. So while he kept on talking i just left the store. On my way home i wanted to turn back 3 times just to slap him and chop off his mullet. I moved to the Upper East Side in the summer of 2012 and I was so happy to find there was a pet supply store right around the corner from me. But my first encounter with the owner/manager/whatever was VERY odd. He was creepy and made weird remarks about me (when we should be talking about my dog). He's got this eccentric approach to pet care and he definitely made me feel uncomfortable. Also, his merchandise is ridiculously overpriced. He's got rawhide for $15 when I could go to the pet shop on York near 80th and get it for $10 cheaper. Never going back there again. read more

I'm so frustrated I didn't read these reviews before going here. The guy who served me lied to me in order to make a sale, made me feel very uncomfortable by making very over the top comments on my appearance (when buying pet food, how is it appropriate to tell someone how sexy they are?), was rude about all his other customers and when I returned to return the item he sold to me under false pretenses he was belligerent and unhelpful. Most overpriced pet store in existence. Basic products such as the poop waste bags are double the price of any other store in the city. This should have been my fair warning. DO NOT SHOP HERE! The creepy owner/manager lied to me about a product. I expressed doubt about what he was saying and he said not to worry, that he would guarantee the purchase. Of course, when I got home, I discovered his lie. I immediately tried to return the product but he would not refund my money, citing "store policy." He finally offered store credit and wrote the purchase amount on a piece of paper with no other information. I questioned if he would really honor this credit and he said "Of course, I know my writing and will know that this is a credit." Later, when I tried to use the credit he would not honor, saying that he knew nothing about it and that maybe it was his twin who I had dealt with previously! I'll start with the one good thing about this place. There is this cute little white cat that's on a leash by the door. She's adorable. Because of seeing this cute cat all summer, I decided to check them out to get some new cat toys. The owner had no catnip spray (fine), but instead gave me this long spiel about these toys stuffed with catnip. My cats generally like such toys for about ten seconds. But he promised that these were different, and that my cat would be doing back flips for them. So I decided to get two. They are about the size of my palm. I walk to the register and they ring up for $32.49!!! Of course no price was on the toy, but I almost wanted to barf at that price. But I had fallen for his claims, so I decided to suck it up for the love of my cats (and to help the livelihood of the little cat outside). Result: my cats treated this like every other catnip stuffed toy. It was hardly worth a dollar. And a little googling revealed that these Cat Savvy toys costs $5 or less. I took the one they hadn't played with back, and he said "oh you don't remember, I said it takes a week." No refunds, only store credit, and the cat food I normally buy was on the shelves but 'recalled' with no sign to indicate that. He also saw my Tuxedo cat and called it an "Oreo" cat. My cat doesn't look like the famous oreo cat, and that's not a 'type' of cat. This guy is a professional scammer/con artist, fast talker. His helpful advice is a joke, and it's just to make you not balk when he grossly overcharges you. The guy working there told me an outrageous lie just to get a sale. He said "the manufacture only makes this dog food in 4lb bags to keep the quality fresh" a quick google search completely proves him a liar. Another bold faced lie- he pointed me to a new brand which he claimed was cheaper. I did some price comparison when I got home and my old brand was 1/3 cheaper!. Mikes' Pet shop is one of the best places to go if you need help with understanding dog behavior, canine nutrition etc. The owner, Mike , taught me everything I needed to know about how to handle my first service dog, Fiona , and now,my second, Lia, a golden-retriever -chow mix. He continues to teach all of his customers to improve the quality of their pets lives thru the use socialization and nutrition. The shop is the place to meet others with canine issues as well. Many of us, who are healthcare providers/researchers on the UES utilize the store as it is close to our workplaces- Cornell, HSS, Rockefellar University etc. This is a "need to go" place if you need assistance with your pet. Simply ask many questions before you walk in and you will get the answer to your pet question IMMEDIATELY. read more

pet paradise or miky's pet supplies or whatever it's called, charges $89 for a 30 lb bag of acana! that's ridiculous- did anyone call acana to check on their approved vendors? any of the other stores on the UES will order fresh it for you, if they don't keep it in stock. I got it for only $50- $57 with tax (and that's with standard industry markup). i just don't see how a shop owner can really "care" about his customers when he's robbing them blind. read more
