Our dog was a mixed breed Sato rescue from the SPCA, which was a wonderful experience. My dog before that was a mixed breed rescue as well. Our application was never denied. In fact, we were approved for an aged 6 month + adoption and I have the evidence from attending an adoption fair. It was after that fair, that achieving any follow up was very difficult, though I eventually did receive an email after many attempts. I gather the respondent confused me with a different applicant. I know there is a lot of good work done there and the dogs look great, it was just difficult to communicate so we moved on.

They IMMEDIATELY rejected her application, stating that their policy is against all boundary training. All dogs should be boundary trained, because god-forbid they get out of their harness, or sneak out the door when it is opened for guests, and they know how to obey a basic boundary command such "heal" or "place" or "to me". It's absolutely insane to think a rescue would be against this training, especially when trying to rescue stray dogs. That's a farce of a company, and they are falsely advocating that they have dog's best interests in mind. Every dog should know where their home is and who it's with, and how to stay near. It's disgusting that they would reject incredibly caring rescue dog people for wanting to include boundary training in the abundance of training my family goes above and beyond with to ensure their rescue dogs stay safely with them and to ensure they lead the most comfortable life. Then once informed of how they exactly plan to train them, and included videos on previous training successes, my family was immediately responded to with a hostile email saying that they refuse to process their application. No research into what my family does, how well they have loved and taken care of all the rescue dogs they've ever had. Just ridiculous and honestly extremely sad. Sad and heartbreaking that they would reject kind people and a loving home for any of these babies just wanted to finally find their furever family. I hope they reevaluate how they respond to people and how they make these policies that keep good families from adding these amazing pups to their home, and get these dogs into the best care.

My application was quickly accepted after calls to my vets and references. I was adopting as my beloved canine partner and co-parent to my younger jack russell passed away following an extended illness. My small boy was eager for a play-mate. The first two dogs we were excited to meet were not a good fit for us and we thought it was a sign that it wasn't the right time. Until the lovely volunteer we were working with, Marie, introduced us to her foster pup. She had watched our interactions with other dogs and saw the personality of my JRT and his disposition and encouraged us to meet whom we now call Nancy. Nancy has a fear of men and a timid personality and thought my good natured boy would be the perfect companion to allow her to come out of her shell and shine. Best decision for me, my JRT and I think for Nancy too. I am forever grateful for these folks who go above and beyond to find the the best match for the animal and the family. An incredibly difficult job the volunteers do which I think is often overlooked. Thank you for completing our family!

Then March of this year, our 2nd boy passed over the Rainbow Bridge. Recently we decided we missed having two canine family members and set out to begin the search for a friend for our dog Daisy (also a rescue) and I knew about Eleventh Hour Rescue and the work they do for a while and had attended events like Puptoberfest. When we saw there was a Winter market happening at the Sussex fairgrounds, we got our pre-appoved application completed and attended the event with Daisy hoping to meet a particular dog. When it turned out the beautiful girl in question wouldn't be quite the right fit for our family, we came close to leaving and determined to search through other adoptable dogs with 11th Hour when we were asked if Daisy wanted to meet Jett, who we'd missed. We did an introduction and short walk together with one of the volunteers and our family. It became quickly apparent that these two would become fast friends and he was super friendly immediately with our whole family. Jett came home with us that day and immediately seemed to feel right at home. But he wasn't answering to his name, so we bounced a bunch around and thought we'd have to use a process to change it, but we came up with Remmington III (Remmy casually) and he began answering to that almost immediately. We are on day 3 and we all couldn't be happier. Everyone who volunteers with Eleventh Hour from the pre-approval process to the event staff were so welcoming, encouraging and wonderful. They do a fantastic job of vetting potential adopters so that each animal finds their perfect furever home. I would recommend anyone searching for a furry family member to consider them.

Keep your dogs far far away from Lisa." I hesitate writing this review because the owners, Monica and Arjun, are EXTREMELY nice and run a well kept and absolutely adorable shop filled with amazing treats, toys, and food options/toppers for dogs. The Modern Canine is conveniently located in a strip mall on 206 with plenty of parking, and they give free puppacinos to dogs who visit. Unfortunately, my review is as low as it is because I had a TERRIBLE experience with their groomer Lisa. Despite the multiple recommendations I received in a local neighborhood Facebook page for a reputable groomer, Lisa did the worst grooming job I've ever seen (I had a cockapoo for 16 years prior to the puppy I have now). Worst of all, I trusted this groomer enough to do my dog's haircut 2 weeks before our wedding. I paid $80 for a full body haircut, bath, brush/blowout, ear cleaning, and nail trim. My fiance was the one taking our dog to/from the groomer, so I reached out on Instagram a week before the appointment with "inspiration/inspo pictures" for the haircut so they'd know exactly how to groom him and my fiance wouldn't have to worry about explaining it to them since he would be rushing during his lunch break to take our dog to this appointment. They said they'd add the pictures to his file but when the day of his appointment came around, they called me while I was working to ask if I had pictures even though I already sent them and they said they'd add the pictures to his file a week beforehand. When my fiance picked him up, the hair on his face was much rounder than my inspo pictures. I asked the groomer to round it out a little more to match the picture and the outcome was a sloppy, choppy MESS. I requested a partial refund for the face trim and part of the tip to reflect the cheaper overall cost, which the owners graciously gave me. When I was home the next day, I noticed that even the body was cut sloppily. Lisa left long patches on his butt and paws and it looked like she just cut his hair with straight scissors instead of blending it out and making it more of a clean cut. I feel like I could have bought a dog grooming kit on Amazon and done a better job. I reached back out requesting a full refund of the tip which they willingly refunded. The owners handled the situation very professionally, and they were apologetic which I appreciate. That's why I still recommend The Modern Canine for the store itself and will continue to support it by buying toys and treats, but I DO NOT RECOMMEND HAVING YOUR DOG GROOMED HERE. Keep your dogs far far away from Lisa. I've since found an amazing and extremely talented groomer to fix the mess Lisa made. This other groomer also agreed that his face trim came out extremely choppy and sloppy. I'll post a review of the lifesaver groomer on my profile if you'd like to see the groomer I highly recommend instead.

They are extremely communicative, and the events are usually held on Saturdays, but the transport that was bringing the dogs in had troubles and the event ultimately had to be moved to Sunday. I had my phone call at about 11:15 and about 1 PM hours later I was informed about the date change. It is not a typical adoption shelter that I have been to in the past. At the event, there is a ticket system, as in, the earlier you get there the earlier you will be called. While you wait you mingle with the volunteers and the dogs. You get a vibe on which dog feels like the best fit for you. However, be mindful that the crew with MatchDog Rescue does their due diligence and wants the best for EVERY SINGLE DOG. We went to the event with a very specific dog in mind. One that was on the medium/large end. However, the staff that reviewed our application and lifestyle, let us know that the dog might not be the best fit for us in terms of training and size of our home. While it was disappointing to hear, we knew at heart we wanted what was best for the dog and us. As mentioned before there is a mingling period while waiting to be called on by staff. During this period you can meet dogs of all ages, sizes, and all types OUTSIDE of dog cages. We had met several different dogs during this period, just to name a few that I can remember, Nevada, Hewitt, Cassidy, Dukie, and Garret. We bonded with several dogs early on, but with our hearts set on a specific dog, we just enjoyed their presence. However, after being informed that the dog we had our hearts set on was not a good fit for us, we knew which of the many dogs we met during the mingling period we wanted to go on a walk with. We asked if Hewitt was a good fit for us, confirmed he was, took him on a little stroll around the lot, and knew that our hearts were set on him. We went through the process of adopting him and each volunteer we worked with, remembered Hewitt and always told us how he was such a great dog and a cute little snippet or fun fact about Hewitt. There was never a doubt in my mind that Hewitt was not loved under their care. On our way out with Hewitt, the last volunteer that we worked with walked us to our car, ensuring that Hewitt was buckled in and safe and had their very loving and sad goodbyes with each other. Hewitt has been with us for about a week. We are a very calm, but active couple and Hewitt matches exactly that for us. When we are relaxing, he is relaxing. When we are running, Hewitt is right there running with us. It is not something that I considered when I was looking into adopting a dog, but I am extremely grateful the staff at MDR let us know before adopting a dog. If ever in the future I am looking for a second dog, there is no doubt in my mind that MDR will be the first adoption agency I look into.
