I am so grateful that Pet Food Express does not sell animals as pets. It is so cruel and awful that other pet stores like PetCo continue to exploit animals by selling birds, rodents, fish, and other animals. I've stopped in this specific Pet Food Express location several times to get Whimzee treats for my dogs, they love those ones! The staff has always be helpful and kind. Dear owners/managers, Long-time customer here. Giving a (hopefully temporary) review of one star due to mold build up in self wash areas (see photos). Also, aprons smell worse than my dog pre-wash. Please sanitize aprons thoroughly (and don't just spray them down) or replace them with easier to wash aprons. Disposable aprons are not a sustainable option. Notified today's manager of my concerns. She told me boss is aware and that 3rd party has been contacted. Not sure why moldy wash stations are still open exposing dogs, such as mine today, to these conditions. Was not offered any type of refund on today's wash. Looking forward to an update with photos of sanitized wash areas and aprons. Thanks in advance as I hope to remain a loyal customer. read more

Had a pretty negative experience today after years of friendly customer service. Our teller seemed perturbed when I nicely asked for a breakdown of the bill so I could understand the $400 charge, a woman with blue hair seemed to be agitated by our dogs (friendly and respectful), this location and chain of stores is one we've chosen due to the friendly and caring customer service - to look annoyed that dogs are in the store and trying to get away from them while avoiding eye contact or exchanges about products with customers seems odd. Overall negative experience and we generally come here simply to try to support local business (online shopping tends to be cheaper). We will return but do hope management addresses the employee and customer experience issues. read more

Their customer service is always on point - tonight I was helped by two gentlemen, one who rang me up kept going the extra mile to find the treats I was looking for, offered to throw away my dog's poop bag (I carried it in since it was right before we entered) and was just overall friendly and helpful. It was nice to meet kind humans after being on the road with crazy Friday evening commuters. They also have a great return policy and accept donations of leftover food and treats. I ordered two forty pound bags of pine litter and the store never delivered it. I ordered pine litter and 5 tiny tubes of cat treats to be delivered and they called me at 8:30 in the morning and left a message saying they didn't have the two forty pound bags of litter and asked if I wanted them to replace them with four, twenty pound bags. When I went to my mailbox store where I have my delivery address, there were 5 tubes of cat treats waiting for me in a bag and no litter. When I called the store asking what happened to my order, they said they couldn't get ahold of me so they delivered the treats and canceled the litter order. I only ordered the cat treats to push me over the $50 free delivery purchase minimum limit. I didn't actually need the cat treats, I needed the litter! When I spoke to an associate I told them I work nights and I'm not up at 8am when they pack orders so I didn't answer the call and why didn't they just deliver the 4, twenty pound bags of litter. I also told them I didn't have the money to place a new order of 4, twenty pounds bags of litter and asked when I would get my refund. They told me I had to wait 3 days to get my refund so I could order more litter. In the meantime I have no litter!!! I'm also out the $10 tip I gave DoorDash to deliver really heavy bags of litter. The DoorDash driver got $10 to deliver one bag of 5 tiny tubes of cat treats that I didn't even need. This store REALLY fucked up my order. They made a stupid cancelation decision and they made a stupid delivery decision. If the website didn't force me to order from this store again I would NEVER use these dipshits again. read more

I first called in to see if I could bring my cat to wash since I was on my way to the vet and he got an accident in his carrier and they said yes absolutely, so I got there and even the ladies who were washing their dogs were really helpful, but Emily went above and beyond to help me clean up the tray, disinfected and make me feel welcome not only me but my cat too because he was in a lot of stress. Staff are at best about as helpful as the USPS, seem to lack knowledge of their products, seem to be too in a hurry to help people, and seem to not like their jobs. Today I was mostly ignored by an employee *while being checked out* as he talked to someone on the phone. I'll drive farther for better service elsewhere. It's a shame. read more

At times I wash my dog here. The store is organized. I buy treats and chews here. Buy 3 and get the 4th free. My dog loves the JW Pet® Hol-ee Roller Dog Toy small ball and Chuck-it. I like Kiwi Kitchens and Small Batch foods. There's plenty of quality products. I buy K-9 natural toppers and Instinct Limited Ingredients Salmon at Healthy Spot due Pet Express not selling the products. I also like Primal toppers from here. Review based on the self-serve dog wash stations, which are they only reason for me to come here rather than any other pet store. For $18 session I think it's reasonable to expect that everything will work. Nope. Most of the time the nozzle is clogged up so that water only trickles out. Water fluctuates between comfortably warm and ice cold, back and forth seemingly randomly. Soap goes in and out, usually out. The so-called Warm Air Blow Dry actually blows out icy cold air. Staff are totally unhelpful when malfunctions are pointed out; they clearly are not trained on regularly inspecting and servicing the system. I think I'm done here. Even though it's out of the way, I'll try the El Cerrito location when I absolutely need a power-wash, but really I'm just going to do more washing at home in the yard and save the $18. read more

For anyone who takes the time to read this story I urge you to PLEASE never shop at the Albany 'Pet Food Express' location or to do business with 'Pet Food Express' again. Please also remember that they are connected to Amazon as well. I purchased a new dog food brand from this location that is almost exclusively available through 'Pet Food Express' at the recommendation of my veterinarian. The first one and a half weeks of feeding the new food to my dogs went well. However, the new batch of food that I purchased over the weekend at the Albany 'Pet Food Express' location left two of my dogs extremely ill to the point where they had to be rushed to the ER for treatment of symptoms which included bloody diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite and labored breathing. My older dog currently has a severe case of gastroenteritis and it is unknown whether she will pull through after what the vets claim to be caused from "ingesting a toxin or bacteria" in the new food that was purchased from the Albany 'Pet Food Express.' That said, my review is in no way related to the specific product that I purchased as I have been in direct contact with the manufacturer of this particular food brand who have been very responsive and are working diligently to identity what went awry in their quality control practices leading to the toxic pet food. 'Pet Food Express,' on the other hand, took a very defensive and cavalier attitude regarding my concerns. This morning I called to let the manger of the Albany 'Pet Food Express' know that I had two dogs who required ER care as a direct result of a product that had been purchased at his location as I felt that it was the responsible thing to do so no other dogs would get sick or potentially die from consuming the same product they are selling at this location. At no time did I request a refund for the product that had poisoned my two dogs nor was I looking for any remuneration for the hefty vet bills I had incurred due to the poisonous product that their establishment had sold to me. I was simply informing them that they had sold me a product that had led to two of my dogs ending up in the ER. The manager's response was dismissive, accusatory, and downright defiant as he cut me off and spoke over me in order to tell me in no uncertain terms that there was nothing he would do to prevent selling potentially toxic pet food to unsuspecting pet parents at this location. I am astonished that a business who caters to pets would be so callous to the suffering of pets and be so unconcerned about causing further suffering of even more pets in the future. After speaking with the 'Pet Food Express' customer service department after calling the store just in case the manager at the Albany 'Pet Food Express' was somehow not following company protocol it was made abundantly clear that 'Pet Food Express' as a corporation chooses profits over the health and safety of pets which is completely despicable and immoral. As an aside, if you are still not convinced that 'Pet Food Express' doesn't deserve your business, please consider that their entire business model is based on opening up locations near locally owned and operated "mom and pop" pet supply stores in order to drive them out and take over their clientele. This is indeed the case at the Albany 'Pet Food Express' which they opened no less than three blocks away from a well-established and really wonderful pet supply store that was an asset to the community and would, without a doubt, have pulled any potentially toxic pet food from their shelves immediately without hesitation. My dogs' health is worth more than the loss of some measly profits. I had hoped that this company would just do the right thing and toss out toxic pet food before it could hurt more pets but they unequivocally do not care about you, your pets, or who they harm in the interest of turning a profit. Mia was THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME!!!! I was literally leaving my friend's home tonight, when we realized most of her dog's upper right canine was... lying on her living room floor. I noticed she was down to one can of wet food while she was on the phone with the vet, and ran off in search of more. I was pretty lost when I got to Pet Food Express, because I knew Isis (the dog, she's an angel of a pit bull) had a strong preference but I only have a cat (garrus!) who refuses to eat wet food. He drinks a hilarious amount of water, it's fine. Mia caught me standing there looking confused, and was shoulder-deep in the pallets of wet food under the shelf within seconds. She found and pulled out Isis's favorite super quickly, and had so many good ideas about how to get garrus to eat wet food himself that I felt inspired to go buy him a few new bags and a couple of toys to try out! My weird cat will also only play with ONE SPECIFIC toy. It's a mouse on a wire, and he makes me play fetch with it. Isis is super grateful to Mia, and so am I!! Garrus is incredibly angry, because I have once again put a bowl of the soggy stink mess near his kibble. But he is also incredibly high! The $2 bags of catnip in the cat toy aisle are no joke, my dude had one pinch and immediately jumped into my bedroom trash can. Neither of us could explain quite why he did that. Wonderful service and "therapy" session from Steph. she helped us in trying to figure out a way to let our cat outside for a bit while we are there. We have had our 7 year old orange tabby for one year and he is about 7 years old now. Looks like he has always been inside, but lately wants to get out a bit. Today was my new puppy and mines FIRST time using the Pet Wash station at this location and I just want to start by saying the customer Service I received today from Ashley was one for the books. She helped me figure out the shampoo and water hoses. My dog was new to the whole bath situation so he was acting a bit naughty and she came right to my rescue with treats in hand and entertained him so I could finish his bath. She was beyond helpful and just so friendly and nice. I will now be making this my new " home " pet wash place and hope to see her again. Really happy with the service I received today. When we adopted Minnie from the Berkeley Humane Society, we were given a discount coupon to Petfood Express. This particular Petfood Express used to be the one on University Avenue before being relocated to the Albany area on the grounds of UC Berkeley's University Village. The space in Albany is half the size of its former University Avenue space. We were assisted by a very kind and sweet associate named Kai. Kai was very kind and sweet to both Dolce and Minnie as they were being fitted for harnesses. Minnie was also fitted for a slip collar. Kai helped us in getting name plates for them and suggested indicating they were microchipped on their respective plates. There were dog beds on sale that were the perfect size for Minnie. There is quite a selection of pet supplies and pet food at this Petfood Express. I was disappointed that the selection of dog clothes was virtually limited. Kai mentioned that their El Cerrito branch (located near the El Cerrito Del Norte BART Station) had more of a selection of dog clothes. I do recommend coming to Petfood Express, especially if Berkeley Humane gifts a coupon to the dog (or cat) and its new family. The associates--like Kai--are great in interacting with their clients and owners--and are knowledgeable about their offerings at Petfood Express. Cheers and Ciao! read more

Unreasonably priced. No food with grain (ask any vet and they will scream at you about how bad grain free is and how it's a marketing ploy because it *sounds* healthy.). Offered less money for an assistant management position than people could make that washing dogs. Small, okay, selection of overpriced boogie toys. Small selection of everything... If they even have it. Most locations at least have great customer service. BUT NOT HERE. Additude when I dared asked to use the the restroom after spending an arm and leg. I don't blame the staff having heard how they are treated though. Rediculous rich Karen store preying on people who don't know better or don't care. The dog wash area is really nice. Manager Lindsey has a very poor customer service. I showered my dog for 20 minutes and realized that there was no shampoo coming out. No foam. No smell. I though it was normal because I tried other shampoos on the same machine and they were very subtle too. An associate came to check and she agreed that there was no shampoo coming out of the one I selected. Lindsey went to check, and according to her it was working fine. She turned around, said good night and left. I was never offered a solution. Nor a refund. Nor a explanation. By the way, the "warm air" selection on the machine, only has very cold air. Yelp I'm writing this review because I was totally outdone by the service I received today in Albany. I usually don't shop at this location, but I was in the area and I figured all the stores are the same, but they are not. The Piedmont and Alameda stores are great. I have been recently convinced to switch my dog to raw. Every time I'm in the pet food express in Alameda they mention that raw feeding is the best. So today I was happy to make the switch. I went to the Albany store and talked to one of the lady's and she helped me find the best food for my puppy. Tuckers. While previously trying to convince me to switch to raw I was informed about this really cool coupon that the company gives to customers who are trying new food. (Or so I thought) While I was at the register ready to check out, I asked about the coupon. The cashier (Lindsay) said she didn't know what coupon I was talking about. I thought that was pretty strange because I was told this is something that all the stores have. She then told me she could give me 25% off. I told her I was told the coupon would be 50% off. She then tells me oh it sounds like you've used this coupon before. I explained to her that I was informed about this coupon by other Pet food express workers. She made me feel like I was trying to get free food. I was totally embarrassed standing at the register going back and forth with her about this coupon. To make a long story short I will never return to this store. I didn't like the way I was treated and how I was being basically accused of misusing coupons. My first visit to the new Pet Food Express. I prefer this location, because it means I don't have to drive all the way to the one in El Cerrito. The first thing I noticed was that this store seemed smaller than the El Cerrito location. But it was also clean, bright and airy. The layout seemed very similar if not the same. The prices looked similar, if not identical. The first thing my sister did after she walked in was ask whether they also offered a buy three get one free deal on kitty litter. When the cashier said yes, we grabbed a cart and made a beeline for the back of the store. We loaded up four bags of kitty litter, got our discount, paid, and loaded the bags up in my car. They have the best selection of frozen food for my kitty who is overweight and needs the least processed food possible. It pains me to be a Yelp complainer. I've worked 12 years in retail so I cut retail workers a lot of slack when I'm shopping. My average experience has been good (hence the 2 stars) but my last one was disappointing and frustrating so I've decided to no longer shop at this particular location anymore. After deliberating my dogs dietary needs for a while, I bought a bag of dog food that was nearly $90 but it had a $5 off sign on the shelf right next to the price, so I went for it. I also bought some cans of cat food that had Buy One Get One Free labels on the shelves. An hour later I glanced at the receipts and realized neither promo was honored so I was overcharged by $10. I'm low-income and precariously housed, $10 is more than I can afford to lose on human error. I decided to call and see if the error could be settled over the phone or if I needed to make another trip in. I explained to the sales associate that I had been in an hour earlier (~4pm) and had made my purchases under the assumption that I was getting the advertised deals. She replied that those promotions had ended that very day and that the signs had been removed that morning so, I must be mistaken. I (calmly) stated the time stamp on the receipt and repeated that I made my purchasing decisions based on the deals that I saw advertised on the shelf. She continued to gaslight me and insinuate that I couldn't have seen those promos on the shelf bc that would mean that she wasn't doing her job and she "remembered taking those promo signs off the shelves already and putting the new promos out." Come on, sis, why you gotta do me like that? I've been overcharged at this and other Pet Food Express stores in the past and when I've brought it up, they've honored the advertised price, whether the promo was expired or not, because otherwise you are misleading customers with false advertisement. So go ahead, keep the $10. I'll go to a small business with comparable prices and be treated with dignity instead. read more
