Petco must STOP SELLING ANIMALS. Animals are suffering and dying becasue corportations like Petco want to make money on their lives. I just visited this Petco in El Cerrito and it was horrifying. I counted over 20 dead and dying gols fish, betta fish languishing in a tiny cups, and a mouse who is very sick and likely going to die. I asked them if I could please take her to a vet and they refused. Their apathy to her suffering is digusting. Stores like Petco that sell animals for profit do not care about animals. The only good thing about Petco is that they host cat adoptions with local rescue organizations on weekends. All I have to say is, "meh...." The only reason I came here is because it's the nearest pet store from where I live. Their fish food section needs a revamp. It looks very poorly replenished and there were packages opened with food spilled all over the shelves. The comet fish tank has a few dead floating fish in there and the other comets were cannibalizing the carcasses. The thing is that I was here last week and there were half eaten dead fish in the comet tank then, as well as a similar mess in the fish food section. Did anyone bother to clean the aquatic department for a week? I was waiting in the check out line for a few minutes. The 2.5 stars is to much. For the 3rd time I have tried Petco, for distance convenience only. Once the cancelled on me, 2nd time cancelled. Filled out the online profile for my dog, for medical questions I listed he has seizures, but it's controlled by medication. My bad for being honest. Nothing on the site said to bring a dr note. Seizures are common for dogs. Anywho, after waiting for the slow as molasses vet techs to get to us, I was told they will not groom him without a dr note. I had a very pleasant visit to petco today, more specifically at vetco where I scheduled my cat Huey for a few vaccinations. The vet himself was very friendly and informative. I brought my two, small adopted dogs in for a bath, I usually bathe them at home. I mentioned that they're pretty itchy even though they don't have fleas. Carmina said something like she would use a special shampoo and a lavender spray. I agreed. There was no mention of the $20 up charge for "specialty shampoo"?! ($10 per dog plus a $6 "materials fee" per dog.) It would be nice to give the customer the option to decide if they want to pay more. I have one female and one male. They came out with the same bandana. I was expecting a bow in my girl's hair but this is minor; maybe they ran out or something.. Carmina seems nice and they were ready in two hours as quoted. The price for two dogs to get a bath and blowdry was over $100! I'll go back to doing it myself and just bring them for nail trims and anal gland maintenance. read more

This is specifically for Grooming! Carmina is THE BEST!!! I drive 30 min to this Petco just for Carmina because my dog Betsy loves her so much and won't let anyone else touch her for hygiene/grooming needs. Carmina is always soo warm, patient, and just really goes out of her way to make it a good experience. She was born to be around dogs, you can just tell. She's a dog whisperer! And shout out to the whole grooming team in general! Even though they can sometimes get a little busy during their discounted "happy hour" which is when I go, they're always professional, courteous, and efficient. With a new furbaby addition to our family, we've found ourselves occasionally visiting this Petco location to pickup various toys, collars, and other supplies to meet our puppy's growing needs. This location is decently well stocked, and all employees that we have encountered have been very friendly and helpful. Their price points are definitely a bit higher than one would find on Amazon, but it's to be expected given the overhead with a brick & mortar location. And is convenient when we just need something right away. They're currently clearing out their holiday inventory, which is in boxes littered throughout the front of their store. Despite being a big box store, I think Petcos are a net positive to consumers because they provide pet supplies at scale. That being said, this has to be one of the messiest, disorganized Petcos I have stepped into. As people had been remarking since reviews from 2023, the store is in total disarray. Recently visited for the supplies, but not happy to see that they still sell animals. There are so many animals that need to be adopted that this seems wrong. The conditions they're kept in are just sad - for example a betta fish in a tiny amount of water and dead fish in the tanks. I went to Petco today and was honestly horrified by what I saw. So many animals are confined in tiny, prison-like enclosures. It was heartbreaking to see birds all by themselves and reptiles in tiny tanks and Betta fish in tiny cups that looked so sad. What really upsets me is PETCO's hypocrisy. They have cat adoption kennels right at the front, which is great, but then they turn around and sell all these other animals just to make money. With so many animals including reptiles, birds, fish and others in rescues needing homes, it's wrong to keep breeding and selling them for profit . Petco needs to stop selling animals, period. They should encourage adoption for everyone, not just for cats but for all animals! read more

I'm glad that Petco has a good selection of pet supplies which was why I came here. Wanted to get a toy for my rescued animal. I decided to browse around the store and became enraged by what I saw. I always heard that Petco sells live animals but I never really looked until I came across a wide variety of animals from snakes, guinea pigs, mouse, turtles. All looked sad and bored. I look at my rescue dog and can't imagine them being in that position. I think it just needs to be said that these animals don't want to be caged and selling them as if they're play things is just wrong. I got so upset that I just ended up not buying the toy and left. If I could give this place 0 stars I would. Went into the store in hopes of buying a fish, looked around the store for a worker to get some help. The worker told me head to the back and someone would help me, spent 20 min waiting and nothing. I went back to the front and asked for help once again, was told go to the back once again and no one showed up after another 20 min. I went in there last week and was happy to see a cat adoption event but disturbed to see so many other animals sitting in small tanks/cages for sale. It seems so hypocritical to understand the value and importance of rescue and adoption, but only for some species. I hope they will stop selling any animals. I went to this petco on Tuesday (17th Feb) and while I was so so happy to see petco only working with rescues for cat & dog adoptions - the "exotic" animal area was another story. Mice, betta fish, gold fish, budgies, and many other species were all being sold as commodities, and many were sick and dying. Some of the gold fish were stuck to the tank filter and being eaten by their companions - it was heart breaking. A female mouse was very sick - my friend had gone there on Saturday and noted the same individual was sick at that time - so it had been several days without any medical intervention. The commercial breeding facilities that these animals come from are notorious for animal cruelty and neglect, and the very existence of commercial breeding of animals normalizes seeing them as commodities - as opposed to sentient beings with autonomy. Please please only work with rescues petco - there are truly so many animals that need homes and care. As a society we must move away from viewing animals as objects we can breed, buy, and sell. Please lead the way in caring for animals with respect and empathy. read more

I went to petco El Cerrito grooming for my precious dog about 2 months ago and received horrible treatment from two of the most disrespectful, rude, mean and unprofessional groomers 1st one said she was the manager Carmilita 2nd was her sidekick Mahogany. The way they treated my dog with aggression while trimming and buffing his nails was horrible after I saw Mahogany and the original groomer struggling with my dog I wanted to intervene. That's when Carmilita got in my face yelling and pointing at me I've been taking my dog to petco since 2019 and I have never had such a horrible experience. Nonetheless I made a complaint no one have contacted me to further address my concerns. Im very disappointed with this store, management and corporate for not handling this matter appropriately!!! We had an appointment for a bath, but when we arrived, we were told that the groomer had canceled our appointment. No apology, just an offer to reschedule for 3 days later when we would be out of town. When making the appointment we were asked to give 48 hours notice if we need to cancel. Worst experience with the groomer Mahoganie. She was extremely rude and grumpy. From the moment I walked in, she acted like serving me and my dog was a burden. Her attitude was unprofessional and made me feel uncomfortable leaving my dog in her care. I honestly don't know how someone with such a negative attitude can work in a service role with animals. She seemed like she hated her job and didn't want to be there. I watched through the window while she was trimming my dog's nails and she was visibly frustrated, which my dog could sense and made him more nervous than he usually is. It took them 7 hours for a grooming my Maltese. He suffers from anxiety separation this was not a good experience for him. The worst part no one was able to tell me why it took that long I made 3 phone calls without an answer to know if my pet was ready. Make sure you don't use Carmina G. Terrible condition. Unsafe for pets or children. The floors are covered in trash and urine. The place stinks of cleaner to the point that it brings a tear yo your eye, but it seems they just spray it in the air... I feel bad for the animals kept here. The cages seem like they are only barely cleaned weekly, with wet and soiled bedding filling the boxes. To make the visit even more uncomfortable, there are also no public restrooms here. Even though they have them, and a sign showing folks where they are... The staff seems very scarce, with apparently 1-2 people total in the store in the middle of the day. I just had the most terrible experience with Marta the store manager at Petco in El Cerrito. I came to buy goldfish at 7:50 pm, more than an hour before the store closed at 9 PM. But Marta refused to allow staff to help me, saying she was understaffed. Totally unclear why, Since there were two staff in the store to help. It was horrible customer service. I'm trying to give the store my business, but the manager refused to help me. I don't plan to go back to Petco El Cerrito anytime soon. Extremely unsatisfied! read more

a long metal door beam from the electronic door fell on my head as walked out petco to getting a basket at the door to bring my new barbet to get a kennel for her first road trip from this establishment. not one employee came to help me with blood pouring down my head. there were no signs posted to say baskets cannot go out the door with a tall pole sticking in the back of the basket. no warning signs or nothing says shopping baskets cannot go out the door! why not if your can just make it to the sidewalk where you are parked should be fine for the disabled shopper. nothing that helps a older, female with medical problems. and of course the beam hit skull and hit my shoulder with a reinjury being treated to add to that and i have a sling to walk around with. management never reached out and yes the incident report was filed before i left. i hope that it was notated that this happened in your store and see what osha says when that notice is for all to view. smh.. lets talk! It's been a while since I visited Petco and it was so neat to see that they have renovated the store. They also expanded the grooming station so that there is a counter outside the grooming section (but still inside of the store) where you can check-in and pay. Pros: -I came today for a grooming appointment. I was able to make the appointment online which was convenient. -they now provide doggy report cards and even added a few stickers which was a cute touch -quick service! They have some great groomers but some epically bad communication issues. For a long time the Petco app has said my dog's rabies is expired. This is 100% not true but the store can't seem to fix this issue when I've called so it is a repetitive problem and a hassle for making appointments. Today I drove 45 minutes from deep east Oakland to El Cerrito to get a face, feet and fanny, which takes 15 minutes. They don't take appointments to do that. I know they're open till 6 so I got there at 3:30. I was turned away and told to try again tomorrow. I've decided to cut this place loose and try Alameda. I called four times before driving across the East Bay to El Cerrito and couldn't get a hold of either customer service or any groomer, which happens often. I'd say Petco El Cerrito is a great place if you live in the neighborhood. When you call multiple times and can't get through to anyone you can just walk or drive a short bit to see if there's any availability instead of wasting a lot of gas and time in traffic. read more

I wasn't too happy with the grooming services at another place about a mile away, so I decided to try out the grooming services for my medium sized dog at this Petco and our groomer, Ruby, was amazing! I noticed that all the groomers that were working behind the glass were so calm and happy working with their furry clients. Even though I noticed some of the dogs being nervous, the groomers were all smiling and were so sweet to the dogs. This made me feel at ease leaving my dog in their hands. I came back nearly 2 hours later and my dog smelled great, her nails were cut short (the other place didn't do a good job in this area and my dog always didn't seem to have been thoroughly cleansed deeply), and her fur felt silky soft! I really loved that my dog was also blow-dried and that was included in the price whereas the other place charged to blow dry. Can't wait to come back to Petco again and have Ruby work on my fur baby. FYI, you can pay and tip at the register. read more

Took my Kerry blue here for the first time and was appalled by every aspect. Upon arriving for my appointment, I could not check in as the groomer simply did not show up for the appointment. The manager was nasty and finally agreed to check him in. No communication all day so I finally just showed up and still not ready. The result - a disaster. All they did is shave him and left nasty burn marks. Do yourself a favor - avoid this place at all costs. 5 stars for dog training instructors who are truly fantastic. We have previous only taken our pups to Sirius puppy classes, but since they had no in-person classes and I met one of the nice instructors in the store, I decided to sign up for a Petco class. Sara was very knowledgeable with lots of good situational examples and options for variations. She was also ultra flexible with a reschedule we needed. I think Adrianna was the other instructor who filled in for one class. She was also amazing and super supportive. Our puppy made amazing progress during each class, and I really think he will benefit from future adult classes. I highly recommend private lessons or classes with these instructors. 4 stars for the store remodel and new staff who seem to be more personable and well-trained. 3 stars for the inconsistent products, which is especially frustrating when it's a food that my pet eats and we can't just switch over to something completely different. I won't be rating the groomers, because it's been over a year since I've brought my previous dog in, so maybe they've improved. But our previous experiences have been hit or miss so I'm trying elsewhere for the new pup. read more
