Had a total of 4 visits here during our stay at La Quinta. Meal 1: Dinner - was good, but didn't really arrive all that hot, most of our food was just warm. Meal 2: Stopped in for pie and coffee. Slices are large! No complaints. Meal 3: We all had full breakfasts. Everything was piping hot and the portions were very generous. Meal 4: Breakfast before heading out of state. This was a nightmare, but I only have our server to blame. She first tried to seat us at a dirty table, when there were clean tables in her area. When she came to take our order, she didn't have a pen. She asked my husband what he wanted in his coffee but ignored me, which required us to call her back so I could get sweetener & creamer. Then....while we chatted with the other couple with us, we didn't realize for a long while that other people seated well after us were getting served. Just about the time we were going to ask where our food was (it had been an HOUR), she pops up and wants to give us the check! She didn't realize she hadn't served us, nor did she ever check on us during that hour, and no refills on coffee. She said she would check on our meals....five minutes later we walked out after paying for our 2 coffees and 2 orange juices because it was clear she went somewhere to hide. I made sure the guy who seemed to be the manager knew which table we were at because, while it's not his fault, this server clearly isn't cut out for the job. He apologized, but what else could he do for us....nothing. With 11 hours of driving ahead of us, we didn't want to delay getting on the road any longer. read more

I was a little worried bc of the mediocre reviews, but it was pretty good. The service was a little slow but the waitress was nice. I probably would of eaten somewhere else but it's snowing in Rabid City and we had to get a hotel next door to Perkins. I ordered the pot roast dinner after seeing someone eating it and it looked good. The roast was nice and tender with plenty of gravy with peas and carrots mixed in. Yep, the horrible reviews rang true with my experience. Absolutely horrible service. These people are rude and condescending. I recently went in to get a take out order. The lady at the host desk just stared at me, and then her manager screamed at her that they weren't doing take out orders anymore. So, I said, okay, I'll sit down. This place was across the parking lot from my hotel and at first was so-so because of the ratings but it was actually good. The gentleman at the counter was very friendly and my food was prepared quickly. They have a special where you can pick 2 items or 4 items. I did the cobb salad, tomato soup, and dessert. As you can see below I did 2 desserts (don't judge me! they make their desserts in house and it looked so yummy!) Cobb Salad 4/5 stars: fresh ingredients, tasty ranch Tomato Soup 4/5 stars: full of flavor even after reheating it. To begin, we were told it would be a ten minute wait. There were three tables in the entire restaurant which were occupied. After being seated finally, we tried to order three different items from the menu, only to find out they were out of at least one of the ingredients for each we tried to order. During our own debacle, another customer was upset they waited an hour for their food. The staff were unprofessional, and seemed to be more interested in going home. Very poor service. Stood at the door waiting to be sat for 8 minutes. There are 5 tables, two that have received their checks. Servers ( 2) walked past 5 times each and did not even acknowledge me standing there. The night before I stood at the register to pay for 11 minutes. When I finally asked a server to ring me out she said she was trying to do her side work to go home. My eggs were cooked wrong, the sausage showed up after a finished eating and then the server snapped at me that she would just throw it away after I said I didn't want it. Sadly this place doesn't deserve any stars. Amazingly filthy and can't imagine how it passes health code. When we arrived the restaurant was fairly empty but it took a very long time to be seated or even acknowledged. I don't know what was going on but it was like none of the staff had any idea what they were doing. Our waitress seemed nice and fairly efficient, but that's where it ended. Both my husband and I ordered breakfast and told her precisely what we wanted. Mine was the 55 plus one egg and my husbands was a build your own breakfast which clearly states "start with two eggs". We each told her how we wanted our eggs. She came back and asked again how I wanted mine and I told her. When our meals arrived mine looked pretty meager but my husband's was laughable and had no eggs at all. When she asked how it was I asked her why my husband's had no eggs. She said, "You didn't tell me you wanted eggs"! WHAT???? The food that did arrive was at best room temperature so we asked to please have the bill adjusted to reflect that the eggs were not there. She seemed quite perturbed and kept insisting we hadn't said he wanted eggs. We finished eating a bit of what we had and after waiting a while to get our check with nothing, we went to the cashier and asked to pay. She asked if we had our check and I said no and explained what had happened. She asked where we'd been sitting and when I told her, she said it's okay, have a good day and charged us nothing. It was sad to see that she was on the verge of crying because of the chaos going on in the restaurant. This was Heather and I'd guess she was trying to manage things while serving, too. Obviously they need to have a clean sweep of most of their crew, including the cook. Other tables were having similar issues as ours and a few left after waiting an unacceptable amount of time. We were visiting South Dakota and found the Rapid City Perkins Restaurant right across the street from our hotel. Being that they do not have any Perkins restaurants in Southern California, I had not heard of this restaurant chain before. I have to say I was pleasantly pleased with the food and service we received. They have quite an extensive over 55 menu, with many of the main dishes available, just smaller portions and at a very reasonable price. I had the teriyaki chicken with broccoli and side salad for dinner. The food was very good and the broccoli was fresh and not soggy. I mention this because I rarely get good vegetables unless I go to an expensive restaurant. We liked our meals so much we went there the next morning for breakfast. The over 55 Eggs Benedict was very delicious and cooked perfectly. Our waiter Donvito was so engaging and professional. He gave us excellent service. The place was clean and well maintained. I hope that one day they open some Perkins restaurants in Southern California! read more

We are in Rapid City on vacay. This location is just next door to our stay. Luckily we got seated right away. Several different wait staff approached our table asking for drink orders. We had given our request to the girl that seated us. Ok.... Took a bit for our actual food order to be taken. We noticed several tables of customers just waiting... not a good sign. Place was NOT crowded. Took our food about 40 min to come out! By this time people were coming in, getting seats, nobody waiting on them then they were leaving. One staff member was yelling "People are leaving!" across the restaurant. Very unprofessional. We finished up, food was extremely salty. When I went to the front to pay, the lady in front of me was wanting to pay for the coffee she had because no one ever took their order or even brought her husband his drink. Absolute worst breakfast ever. Ordered the triple dare, should have had 3 eggs, 3 bacon, 3 sausage links and pancakes and hash browns. It came out with 3 eggs, 2 sausage patties and the smallest scoop ever of hash browns. That was my father's order. I ordered a 3 egg omelet that was the tiniest omelet ever with pancakes and received hash browns. Asked for the pancakes and had to wait again for awhile. Then we had to get up and go find our own syrup. Service was awful, food was worse. It was dirty, like filthy and saddest part, it wasn't even half way full. 10/10 DO NOT recommend. We were so looking forward to eating at Perkins, which is usually super good. Right off the back the hostess Judy Morrison was so rude to us, like she was doing us a favor being there. She told us she was going to seat us but had no idea how long it was going to take for us to get served. They put 6 of us in a tight booth for 4 really. We asked if we could put a chair in the end and waitress said absolutely not because she had to get through the aisle which was super wide. Hopped in here for breakfast when we stayed in Great Grand hotel in rapid City. This is a 24 hr diner with menu almost same as Denny's. We were welcomed by a friendly staff member and were immediately seated. The menu is huge, took me a while to decide what to eat . For a vegetarian they did not have much items on menu but you can substitute bacon with fruits or hash browns. We ordered the strawberry toast and grannys omelette ( safest choices for an eggaterian) . Both dishes were good. The portion for strawberry toast was little small for the price but was sufficient if you are not starving ! Full marks on service , taking out a star for very few options for vegetarian folks. After staying a night at the Grand Gateway Hotel we decided to grab some breakfast at Perkins. When we showed up we were warmly welcomed by the staff who sat us at our table and quickly brought us our beverages. During our meal we have to say that we enjoyed our waiter. He was extremely attentive and made sure that we had everything we needed. The food quality was average to other chain restaurants, but what sold it for us was the service. The final gesture that made this stop memorable was the fact that our waiter gave us a cup of coffee to go. I'm unsure if this is a common routine, but at the time it totally made us happy because we were about to start a 14 hour drive.
