First off, I need to say that the guy that runs this place is a really nice guy. He was very…read morecommunicative & very amiable. That being said....his fees are unjustifiable. I've lost a significant amount of weight over the past 3 months & needed to have 3 2-piece suits taken in. He had me try on all 3 & was really thorough with the measurements (so I thought anyway). His initial estimate was $780.00, $740.00 if I paid cash. In my mind at the time I thought this was still pretty good considering 3 new 2-piece suits of the same brand would cost me around $1500. $1200.00 if they were on sale. He asked when I wanted them back. I left that up to him because I wanted him to not be rushed so he can do a thoroughy good job on them. He gave me a pick-up of about a week & a half. This is fine for me. I came to pick them up & I gave him my CC to swipe & charge. I somehow don't need to provide a pin or sign anything & he gives me a copy of the CC transaction receipt wrapped around my card & I didn't think anything of it. When I got home & dug into my wallet to unwrap the receipt from my card so I could put back my card where I always place it I see he charged me $813.00. This put things into a whole new perspective for me. Where did this extra $33.00 come from? Tailors in NYC don't charge sales tax. Then I actually did the math. That's an average of $271.00 a suit. Mind you he's not adding fabric to make it larger. If anything he's decreasing the amount to make it a smaller fit. This & also allowing a week & half's time. This wasn't like a 72 hour time limit. This was a full 10 days. Baffling. I'm now finding little attention to details he missed. One pairs of pants the waist is way tighter than the other two. Almost to the point of not fitting me. One of the jackets is clearly not taken in enough, dare I say, if at all. Another pair of pants a belt loop is half attached so it's just flip flopping around. I just wanted these suits to be taken in because I was tired of looking like MC Hammer at work & I wasn't really thinking how much it could cost. Now that I'm seeing things more clearly & with some of the imperfections I'm finding, I just think $271 for alterations on a 2-piece suit in 10 days time is exorbitantly high when I can just buy a brand new one at Macy's for $400 - $500. I get he's on the UES & he needs to make rent on his space, but....really?

Time pressed against me like a weight--twenty minutes until the shutters would fall, twenty minutes…read morebefore another small corner of the world would surrender to evening's inexorable march. I carried with me a wound in fabric, a tear that had opened like an accusation across the shoulder of my jacket, mocking the day's careful preparations. But there are places in this city, tucked between the grand gestures of commerce and ambition, where miracles still unfold in ordinary rooms. Here, among the gentle hum of ancient machines and the patient whisper of thread through cloth, transformation happens not in hours but in moments--ten minutes to restore what seemed irreparably lost. The hands that worked were neither hurried nor hesitant. They moved with the certainty that comes only from years of small salvations, from countless mornings when pressed uniforms waited like promises kept. This was craft in its purest form: unadorned, essential, profound in its simplicity. Year after year, I have brought my uniforms here--those daily armors we don before facing the world's scrutiny. And year after year, they have been returned to me not merely cleaned but somehow renewed, carrying with them the integrity of work honestly done, fairly priced, neighborhood-proud. In an age of disposable everything, here stands a testament to the enduring: quality that needs no advertisement, service that speaks only through satisfied silence, and the quiet dignity of those who understand that mending is, perhaps, the most hopeful of all human acts.
