I have been altering clothes at Peppino tailors for a few years now. I had lost 50 lb so none of my clothes fitted anymore. I altered trousers, suit jackets, shirts, knit polos, coats. They always did an impeccable job, very detail oriented and the result fits exactly the way I wanted. The finishing is perfect and they reproduce exactly the original cuts, seems. Doing now my first custom tailored shirt and so far looks very good. Also very pleasant to work with every single time, items are always ready when they say it. If you are looking for a fair, honest tailor in this area, look no further. I have an overcoat from AZ, secondhand, with a fox collar. It needs cleaning desperately but the coat was 99 and the couture people you can trust with fur (this collar is not removable like many) would charge more than I paid for the coat. Additionally, I had two missing buttons on each cuff. This looked messy but I never got around to replacing. The cuff would flap out and just didn't look good. A further problem: the top button did not secure the collar and it flapped/buckled. And one pocket, after four years, had ripped so that things fell in the coat. I went to ask about all of the above. Pocket lining is pricey and I decided not to pay 30 for that But he replaced the buttons and then put a SNAP in the top so that it's a clean line. I cannot overstate the joy this provides. If nothing else good happens to me today, this will make the day a win 15 bucks. AND he recommended a cleaners on 58th and 1st :Sutton Cleaners I'm taking both coats to Sutton and will now look put together, rather than disheveled (or homeless, as a CT friend said upon seeing the dirty, button-challenged overcoat in Westport where I sometimes go to lunch--in spite of this guy having voted for Trump, because he's from Soviet Russia and has communism-PTSD). read more

I took a long, chiffon Amsale bridesmaids dress to Peppino's for alterations. They were friendly and professional and did a great ob on the alterations. The top was probably 2 sizes too big and needed some major work and the dress needed a hem ( 2 layers). Took 2 weeks and cost $95. In my opinion both the time and cost were reasonable for the work done. I will return for my other tailoring needs. read more

After my regular tailor of many years retired, I decided to give this place a try. Imagine my utter shock when the charge for hemming a cotton sundress and taking in a sleeveless blouse a little on each side was a whopping $70! That's $25 just to hem the dress, which costs maybe $15 at virtually every other tailor in the city, and a wallet-gouging $45 to take in a blouse. I get virtually all of my clothes tailored, and I really had high hopes for this place, as it's near my apartment and the place is spotless. But the prices are so astronomical that, unfortunately, I'll never return. Update: I recently discovered that the dress mentioned above that was supposed to have been hemmed was actually BASTED! Meaning that it was stitched temporarily (in lieu of pinning) but never actually SEWN. Never in my life have I seen a tailor try to pass off basting as actually hemming or otherwise sewing a garment. I'd like to think the tailor basted it and then forgot to actually sew it, but based on the rest of the shoddy tailoring on that dress (uneven seams, etc.), I am sure they figured they could just get away with it. $25 for basting a dress. What on earth do they charge to actually hem one?!? read more

Shout out to Jimmy! These guys really did some great work on my tuxedo with very short notice. I needed the pants completely redone in the waste, length and pant legs for an event the coming weekend. I dropped the pants off Wednesday morning and picked them up by Friday afternoon. They fitted and look excellent. I will 100% revisit to get more suits tailored here in the future. The modest setup says it all: Quality work at reasonable (but not cheap) prices... and there's a BiG difference. The shop is on the second floor of a commercial walk-up building close to the 59th St 4/5/6/N/Q/R stop. There are 2 clean changing rooms tucked away from the main work space and not a dust bunny to be found in the shop... two things that would be deal-breakers for me (I have really hated some of the other changing setups, or lack thereof, at other seemingly highly regarded tailors). After the successful alteration of 2 formal dresses and 3 casual dresses, I can happily share that the staff here can hem, take in seams, and rework shaping like no one else I've visited. Possibly one of the guarded secrets of the UES, Peppinos is simply great at what they do. read more

No staff spoke English so I had to mime what I wanted to be done. They pinned me after I had to physically show them how to alter it (they did not take a single measurement). The pins were placed so poorly that when I moved one sliced a huge gash on my arm and bled on dress. They said they would not pay for dry cleaning. read more

I came to this tailor on the recommendation of a co-worker, as he assured me their work was impeccable. I went to repair the zipper slider of a jacket, not the zipper but just the shuttle that allows the zipper to zip up, and down. When I went I asked the gentleman who was attending to me to quote me a price, and he refused to do so. After some back and forth, he only claimed that it was going to be "cheap". I had another jacket that was having a similar issue with the zipper, and I decided to bring it in as well going off of the "cheap" prices that he claimed. Again, he refused to quote me a price, maintaining that it was going to be "cheap". When I went to pick them up, I was shocked when the bill came to 60 dollars!!!! Please keep in mind that he did not change any of the zippers, just the shuttle on both pieces. So if you're going to use these tailors, get a quote! If you don't, you might be in for an unwelcome surprise. read more

I've had alterations done at Peppino for many years and became increasingly impressed at the attention to detail and high quality of the work performed by Mr. Garay and his son Jimmy. I have brought him trousers, shirts and suits which he made fit perfectly even when in many cases it required a major rebuilding of the garment. This year I decided to commission a bespoke jacket from Mr. Garay, a navy cashmere in Neapolitan style. I could not be happier with the seamless process and the final result. I have had bespoke suits made before from Savile Row tailors and can honesty say than Mr. Garay's work is fairly comparable in cut and make. Full canvass construction, hand padded lapel, hand attached collar and sleeves, hand stitched buttonholes, etc. All this at a fair price that makes Mr. Garay a great value bespoke service. Perhaps some aspects of the finishing may not be as luxurious as in Savile Row but they are quite good nonetheless. I will certainly continue commissioning bespoke suits and jackets from Peppino. read more

please save yourself the actual physical pain of going to peppino tailors...let alone your money. we paid $400 for a jenny yoo bridesmaid dress and didn't want to take any chances with the alterations. so we did some research and found peppino had pretty good reviews. i regret that day so much. FIRST - they tell us the dress will be ready the following tuesday. so my bridesmaid shows up wednesday and they haven't even started working on the dress. the seamstress starts ripping apart the seams of the dress while screaming at my bridesmaid that it's not 5pm yet so the dress isn't ready, "why are you here?" SECOND - i then called a couple days later to make sure the dress would be ready when we next went. they tell me absolutely the dress is ready right now and it will fit perfectly. so we go....the dress was 2 INCHES TOO SMALL. my bridesmaid is a size 00 and the dress was 2 inches too small on her. DISBELIEF! on top of that instead of admitting what we could all see...the seamstress tells us that she did the dress perfectly and proceeds to yank and pull the dress determined to zip it up anyway while my bridesmaid is turning bright red. i had to yell at her to stop!! finally the guy had to step and and say that they would fix the dress...but all the while telling me he was doing me a big favor because fixing the dress was now costing him more money and we had no right to be upset because we shouldn't expect a dress like that to be fitted in one try. WOW...really??!!!...and it gets worse.... THIRD - so we go back a week later and guess what...the dress is AN INCH TOO BIG!!! i'm just going to stop here...because i'm not sure there's too much more i can say to convince everyone not to go to Peppino Tailors. Almost ruined my wedding. The experience was more horrific than I can describe in this review. read more
