I am really sad to report that Tailors Atelier has gone downhill since my last review, depending on which tailor is assigned to your clothing. I brought in a dress and a jumpsuit to be hemmed, and another jumpsuit to raise the crotch. When I went to pick them up, the dress was fine but the jumpsuits were not! One jumpsuit was still too long, which is so frustrating because it was a simple straight line hem. I was told that I had to return another day for Nigel to fit my jumpsuits all over again. The woman told me that she would let Nigel know, and I could come back any day, and they would be done same day. I came back a few weeks later after finally finding time (I have moved out of the East Village since my previous review, so now it's really inconvenient for me to trek there again). Nigel did the refitting but then said that I would have to come back AGAIN to pick them up. I told him it was quite far for me, so he agreed to messenger my jumpsuits to me, which is very nice (and the reason for three stars instead of one). Well, when I got the bag with my two jumpsuits, guess what? Nothing had changed; they sent me back the jumpsuits without tailoring them! The jumpsuit that needed hemming even has the chalk lines on it still (see photo). I couldn't believe my eyes. Did they just send me BACK my clothing without tailoring them, necessitating me to make ANOTHER trip there? And how would I even know they would actually do it this time? tldr; Tailors Atelier has a lot of organizational and communication issues among the tailors and staff, and the quality of tailoring can vary depending on tailor. I would not bring cheaper clothing (eg straight hemming) back to them, for now their price far exceeds the trips back and forth, and I am so frustrated that I paid so much just for many headaches. I really wanted to like this place- I'm a stylist and deeply wanted to have a good relationship with a tailor I trusted. At first it was great, the staff is sweet, the work is excellent but my issue is the owner. He wouldn't let me get a word in when I had instructions for my pieces. My last experience there was awful. I had blouses that needed the sleeves fixed, when I suggested what I needed the owner shunned my idea- trusting him I let him do what he thought was best. Unfortunately my client was unhappy with it so I had to bring it back a second time. Again, I suggested my original plan, he argued with me on the phone, wouldn't let me speak, and blamed me for the mistake (he's horrible listener and likes to raise his voice). We came to an agreement to put a button with elastic. When I came to pick it up the next day it was completely incorrect. He explained to me he made the decision to change it but no one called me to let me know! When I talked to him about it (he was pinning his own client at the time) he started raising his voice and pointing his finger at me. I had a bag with more pieces to drop off and he refused to take them-which was fine I didn't want to give him anymore business anyway. Instead of being held accountable for his mistake he manipulated the situation, raised his voice at me and called me unprofessional for arguing. I wasn't arguing- I was being yelled at in front of EVERYONE (his clients and staff). So I left and will never come back. I have more stories (Ie. losing my CC number multiple times, over stepping boundaries on my personal life, horrible communication) but I'll just leave this one. I ended up going to Stanton Tailor Shop about half a mile away. They were quick, easy, no drama and cheaper! read more

We used to go here frequently for all of our tailoring needs and the business was incredible. However, after moving uptown for a few years and no longer being regulars, Nigel quickly forgot about us, and the service and attention to detail has severely gone downhill. My boyfriend came in to get his jeans hemmed and it came back with a missing button. Nigel tried to say the jeans came like that, but they were literally fresh off the shelf from APC - and there were no missing buttons when we dropped them off. My boyfriend complained and the team begrudgingly put on a new button, and even though we pleaded with them to get the correct APC button from down the street, they put a random mismatched one onto the jeans. We had to then take the jeans BACK to APC for them to take the mismatched button off, and put an APC one back on. Disaster. read more

WOW just wow, I am impressed in every way with this business. For most of my life I have just been using the "alteration person at the dry cleaner". Throughout the years I've had mixed results. After the last time with 2 pants cut too short, I decided I was going to use the best I could find from now on. Research led me to Tailors Atelier. From the moment Nigel answered the phone and the way he answered my questions, I knew this was going to a much better experience. I made my appointment online and they were all ready for me when I got there. Nigel was super well dressed with a suit that was clearly custom made for him. Perfectly tailored and I just said I want my paints to be fitted perfect like the ones your wearing. Nigel pined up the first pair, marked and measured. Then one of the other staff took over and marked the rest. I paid cash, grabbed the receipt, and came back the following Wednesday as I was instructed. I walked in and all the staff that saw me the week before recognized me and gave a really nice greeting. My pants were all ready as promised, upfront and waiting for me. I took them and went back to the fitting room. I tried on each and every pair. (5 pairs) All perfect perfect perfect. I could not be happier with the alterations. Everything was exactly as good as I dreamed it would be. They are so incredibly meticulous here. All the threads match even upon close inspection. The distance between stitches was matched. It looks like it was manufactured just as it is. Impossible to tell anything was altered other than the dead perfect fit. So needless to say I will be bringing more items. This place is absolutely AMAZING! I worked with Nigel on my wedding dress. I'd gone to a few different tailors and was having a hard time finding someone I trusted with my dress because it was +$5k wedding dress with a lot of intricate detail and I wanted a real professional to work on it. From the moment I started working with Nigel, I immediately felt at ease. He is an expert with dresses, even how he pinned it in, and the way he touches the fabric, you know he has a true passion and skill. He worked with me on making it 100% perfect, and he is very friendly, knowledgeable and professional. I felt 100% confident in him and his team's ability. They worked so hard on turning it around on my tight deadline, and I was lucky enough to have Sana work directly on the dress. I went for two fittings, and Sana worked with me on both. Again, another truly talented and passionate member of the team. She worked wonders on the dress, and it fit perfectly! They also added a bustle, which they used their magic on, because it looked incredible too! A seemingly higher-end tailor shop with knowledgeable seamstresses and fitters that appears to also make custom suiting, owned by a tailor who seems to love clothing. They do good work but don't seem to be very good at communicating amongst each other. Try to schedule your pick up date at least a week or two before you need the garment. My order was delayed by almost a week and I was unable to wear the garment for its intended event. I bought a Golden Fleece suit for my close friend's wedding and wanted to go somewhere that could do functional button holes. Found this place and chose it based on good reviews. The owner was not in on the day of my appointment but the fitter seemed to know what he was doing so I decided to go for it. When i went to pick it up two weeks later (5/30), the button holes on the sleeves were not done despite my calling ahead to see if my order was ready. I told the front desk the wedding was in two days (6/1) and he assured me he would tell the owner (who was actually in that day) and it would be done by that evening or the next day the latest. I call in the morning of (6/1) and they had the audacity to tell me via email it would be finished (6/3) or at 5pm that day. Thankfully I had something else I could wear... read more

I'm updating to one star based on management's defensive, revisionist, and factually incorrect response. The lining was not originally ripped. It was old and sagging. $150 later, it's still old and sagging. Some of that $150 included an adjustment to the fit of the jacket, which I went along with at the suggestion of the tailor. Regardless, the original issue was never fixed and the jacket is still unwearable. I was never "upset" or rude in any way. I'm still not. I cannot say enough about how awesome my experience was at Tailors Atelier. Not only did my husband and I look fantastic on our wedding day (we even ended up being included in a Vogue article about NYC City Hall Wedding Style), we just enjoyed working with Nigel and his team during the whole process. I took my wedding dress to Nigel to be tailored. My husband and I got married at City Hall on March 24. He was super efficient and incredibly knowledgable. He knew the dress, designer, and season without me even having to say anything and he'd worked with the dress before. He recommended the perfect undergarments for the dress and also added cups to the dress which saved me a good $175 since I didn't need to buy a bra. Nigel was incredibly flexible and even took a look at pictures of my husbands suit which I though his tailor didn't do a good job on. As I suspected, one of the sleeves on my husband's three piece suit was uneven and longer than the other which Nigel spotted immediately. After Nigel and team got their hands on it, my husbands suit fit like a glove. The store where he bought it did the initial tailoring and it didnt' even compare to what it looked like once he picked it up from Nigel. Finally - once my gown was ready - there was some mixup about the pickup and it wasn't ready to go when my husband went to pick it up for me. Nigel drove up to our home and DROPPED THE DRESS OFF IN PERSON! I mean, just above and beyond. We could have picked the dress up the next day, no problem, but he'd agreed to have it to me that day and he totally came through! And on top of delivering stellar service he and his wife just make the experience so enjoyable. Came here on a Monday afternoon in hopes of fixing my skirt for my birthday party which was going to be Saturday evening. They accommodated me quick in this store and they had me try on my skirt and measure exactly what i wanted done. The front desk man was very nice and they are very professional here. I had a great experience at Tailors Atelier and would not hesitate to recommend it! I bought my wedding dress at Jenny Yoo and they don't do in house alterations and instead give a list of suggestions. Tailors Atelier was not one of them, but they were downtown and had great reviews. I was easily made an appointment and Nigel did my first fitting. Everyone was really nice and I felt really comfortable working with Nigel. I scheduled my following appointments and came back for the second with Sana. All of the first alterations were great - she thoughtfully considered my questions, including whether or not the bottom needed to be a bit more snug, but after pining it, we agreed that it was fine the way it was. She just had to adjust the length and discuss bustling. My third fitting was just trying on the dress and making sure everything fit. After that, I confirmed that I could just pick up the steamed and ready to go dress the day before my wedding. The only tiny snafu was that when I came to pick it up, they suggested I try the dress on. After waiting and doing trying it on, confirming it looked as great as it did before, they noted that now because I had tried it on, it needed to be steamed again, which would take a few hours. I panicked because I had a rehearsal dinner to go to and hadn't even intended on trying it on and wouldn't have done it had I known. While a tiny bit stressful, it was out of an abundance of care for my dress that they wanted to make sure it was perfectly fit and perfectly steamed. I have a little story to tell about this place. I came here for a simple, though unusual task, to secure a reddish-purple synthetic fur hood onto a vintage wool military coat, a staple of my outerwear for fall and winter. I have tried to mend things myself with mixed results. Mostly bad ones. Upon walking in, I was met with glamorous bright overhead lights, like the kind you find in an art studio, and a leather chair polished to glossy perfection, that functioned as decoration, rather than furniture. I knew just by these details, that this place is going to be WAY over my price range. It turned out I was right. A soft-spoken, authoritative man by the name of Dan examined the possibilities of attaching my fur collar with hands that, I noticed, where simultaneously cool and dry. He had a thick West Indian accent that curved his words into a rhapsodic lilt, and made it very hard to do business! (in less ways than you are reading into- calm down ;)). I couldn't understand him even to save myself, but I pretended that this was not the case. In a tone I could barely hear, he told me 150. I told him without any reservation what I told ya'll: "that is WAY out of my price range". Dan went to speak to a couple of his co-workers. Then Dan disappeared out the front door. I was told by a well-dressed woman to follow her next door; Dan had something to show me. I found Dan the Man making a few swift stitches in the collar of my coat. We hadn't talked about price again, and I was almost afraid that he was going to stick me with it at the end. He ended up letting me walk free, so to speak. I didn't have to pay a dime. It took him approximately 5-10 minutes of work to sew my collar onto my coat. Dan is sensible and professional and I thank him for doing great work on a garment that I will use everyday. read more

My father was a Master Tailor so I'm not used to paying for alterations, so I'm not sure if they were pricey or if that's just the price for alterations. Haha. Wow... Brought a pair of Burberry Swim Trunks taken up and they look better than they did before. Working with Tailors Atelier was hands down my favorite part of the wedding planning process! This is in large part because of Natasha, the incredible woman who runs the place whom I simply fell in love with.. but everyone there is so skilled and amazing and also just wonderful, I can't believe such a gem of a place exists. Before finding Tailors Atelier I had to rescue my wedding dress from Sew Elegant after the seamstress there spent less than 5 minutes with me for my wedding dress fitting, and dismissed my concerns and thoughts saying "trust me.. don't worry" and also said she likely couldn't tailor the organza part of my dress properly, but that it would be "ok." I was offered only one more fitting after that initial fitting, and the date they offered was like a week before the wedding. I left that appointment feeling so uneasy that I had my sister go back and get the dress so I could find a tailor that would give a damn. I can't believe I got so lucky with Tailors Atelier!! Turns out my dress from Lovely Bride was very poorly made and a real challenge to alter after all, but I was relieved when Nigel, who is so talented (not to mention fun!!) began working on the dress and then had Sana join him because it was so complicated, and together they worked on my dress during that first fitting for over an hour. They were basically figuring out how to restructure it to make it work. The simple fact that they were spending the time and scrutinizing it so intensely put me at ease and I knew right then that I had found the dream tailors! They really care about their work and their clients. Over the next several months leading up to the wedding Sana worked such incredible magic on my dress it was truly a remarkable transformation. She is a miracle worker. So the work that they do there is unparalleled, but also the feeling of the shop is also just unique and special. After that first fitting I began to feel like family there: i was always excited to see Natasha and give her a big hug and catch up on how plans are going, she became a genuine friend; Nigel and I sang a jazzy duet one day, to the great delight of my mother; I was offered as many fittings as I needed, and Sana spent fitting after fitting with me getting it just right, and my great joy was seeing her sweet, smiley satisfaction when the challenging work she'd done paid off; they let me float around the small shop admiring myself and playing with my hair and jewelry when I didn't want to take the dress off.
