Peppi's is totally a local hole in the wall that's always busy. It also feels like you went back 40 years in time, as the old lady at the front answers the rotary phone and takes orders down with a pencil. Besides people using their cell phones, you wouldn't have guessed it was 2023 by any other factor. I dont know if its like this at their other locations though. The wall is adorned with history and the characters of the neighborhood. Clearly this place has been around for quite some time. I recommend you order ahead of time. It took about 30 minutes to get my sandwich, so it's not as quick I would have expected. I ordered the no 7, also named the Roethlis burger, and it was like no other sandwich I've had. The hamburger, sausage, grilled onions, and egg are a winning combo. I thought the cold lettuce and tomatoes would be gross, but as long as you're eating it right away, it's actually refreshing! If you want a true yinzer experience you gotta try this place out! Small but charming, you might even find yourself sitting in a church pew while dining. The menu is displayed as soon as you walk in, and then you place your order at the counter. The lady that placed our order was very friendly and helpful. She really brought a warmth to the joint. Once you place your order you get a ticket with a number and can take a seat. The seating is not fancy by any means, but what it doesn't lack is character. You will see pictures displayed on the walls of all the notables as well as some other fun pop culture. As the orders become ready they call out the ticket numbers, and then will bring the food to your table for you. We both ordered cheese fries which were fantastic! They were fresh cut and reminded me of the potato patch fries from Kennywood. By far my favorite part of the meal. I also had a cheese steak served on Mancini bread of course. Ordered through Grubhub. Sandwich was tasteless. None of the add ons I ordered (hot peppers, Italian dressing) were included. I also asked for napkins and utensils, but none were provided. And take a look at the tomato slice. Someone actually looked at that when making this sandwich and said, "yeah that's a good looking tomato...I'd put that on my sandwich". Delivery driver left bag in hotel lobby instead of bringing it to the room. I tried calling him and his number was disconnected. Awful customer experience. The cheesesteaks are excellent. Cheesesteak lovers say the key to a good cheesesteak is the bread and Peppi's exceeds expectations by using fresh baked Mancini's bread from the bakery which is literally next door. You just can't get any fresher than than that. My brother-in-law who is a diehard Philly cheesesteak connoisseur said it was ine of the best cheesesteaks he's ever had although he still rates Delasondro's as the best. With such a good recommendation why only three stars? The music. The sound was turned up so high we literally couldn't hear each other talking at the table and we were the only ones eating in. The speakers were so overloaded that you could hear them buzzing. Although they initially lowered the volume a little when I asked, we noticed that the volume had crept back up to near maximum (I'm assuming there was an "11" on the volume control) by the halfway point of our meal. This is an old school burger shop. I'm talking old school. Now I don't know the history of the place, but judging by the atmosphere I'd say they've been around awhile. (See pics). This restaurant was Smart, took advantage of the local teams rejuvenated franchise led by a guy with the last name Roethlisberger. They made a huge hamburger, named it The Rothlisburger aka Rookie of the year. Made with sausage and burger on a hoagie bun. The NFL sat Chris Berman and Big Ben down and filmed them eating this massive Burger....... I witnessed this and told myself I would eat one of these things one day...... 15 years later, I got the chance. I pride myself on my burger reviews. I eat ALOT of them.... I love them. So naturally since I was in town, I tracked the iconic burger down. It was not nearly as big as I expected. But it was delicious. I finished it and instantly wished I had ordered fries too. I walked about a mile to get to this location.... Found out there are 3 shops in the Pittsburgh area and that I was not at the original. Service was great. My wife and I biked here from Millvale on a Sunday afternoon. I have been to Peppis a few years ago and finding a coupon in the enjoy book for a bogo was plenty of incentive to go back. My wife and I each had the Italian sub and a side of large fries. I love that they do fresh cut fries here. Ours came out hot and in need of a little salt which was available on the table. The sandwiches are huge and we both pigged out and ate it all. The sub is a good balance of salty lunch meat, bread, toppings, and dressing. The price is extremely reasonable as well. Each time I'm hanging out in the Strip District with one of my brothers and I ask about going to eat somewhere, immediately they suggest burgers. Peppi's has been the go-to for several reasons and we never leave disappointed. As you walk in, there is a long counter that the chefs are behind. Then, walk down to the register and place your order. The chefs and workers have all been exceptionally kind, especially D. Each time I have visited Peppi's, D has made my visit and my guests visits both happy and memorable. On top of the great service, the food is also delicious. My obsession with Italian hoagies can be temporarily satisfied with joy here. They serve the burgers on footlong sub rolls and my brothers think it's the coolest thing. If you are a vegetarian, they have options for you, too! Their cheese fries are amazing. Also, prices are pretty fair here. You can get away with a good meal for around $10, which is to be expected if you're getting a large sandwich and a pile of fries bigger than the Great Pyramid of Giza. When you're done eating, you'll be heckled a little for not finishing your food, but a worker will wrap it up for you with a smile. Without a doubt we'll be visiting Peppi's again soon! read more

Food = 5 stars. Wait time = 2 stars. Okay, I finally made it here. My sandwich was amazing and excellent (more details below). However, it took 41 minutes from order time until our two sandwiches came out, and it was just not that busy. The service was otherwise very good - friendly crew, easy going and helpful, etc. But the fries came out in 10 minutes, and it took 31 more to get two, standard sandwiches. That's just a bit broken. FOOD: Excellent. I got the No. 7 (a.k.a., "the Roethlisberger"), and it did not disappoint. The bread is a standout - so fresh, so soft. The meats were great - a mix of ground beef and spicy sausage, served piping hot and just delicious. I was unsure about the egg part, but it worked - it's not really a fried egg - more like scrambled on the flattop, and spread out flat, so it forms another layer. My lovely wife got a Pepper Steak, add mushrooms. She rated it highly as well. One note: the cheesesteaks can come with lettuce and tomato if you're into that, versus without, as is more traditional for a cheesesteak. I will try again, but the 40+ minute wait (I really timed it, yes) could be a deal-killer. Let's hope it was a one-off. If so, I'll be glad to update my review. read more

Update: My last two visits here, much better experience and I'd put them on or with the North Side location. Amazing subs as always, better experience with the staff. I love Peppi's. For my money there's no sub spot in Pittsburgh I'd rather go. I find myself coming to this location a lot as the Strip District is convenient. That being said, I have several gripes about this location as opposed to the North Side one I also frequent. (Redacted) That being said, the food is still delicious. The location is just as "rustic" as all of the other spots. But if you want a more pleasant experience I'd recommend the North Side location. read more

Back To Life by Soul II Soul was playing over the speakers so naturally we walked in with a little groove, and the guy behind the counter said "Oh, you're walking in here with some groove! I like that! I'm takin' care of y'all today!" I ordered a Regular Italian (which was incredible) and he knocked 20% off the bill for our groove! The food got out quick and tasted great. It's affordable, consistent and always SO GOOD. The Joey Porter-bella is hands down my go to, you're lookin' at a life long Steelers fan right here! I tried that Cathedral sub the other day and that sandwich is a DREAM. I was thinking about the Forbes Field Burger with some of Peppi's fresh cut fries ALL DAY yesterday at work.
