I try to support local businesses as much as I can before I jump at ordering on Amazon, but I just experienced a second bad encounter at this store ( the first being a year prior). The service was rude and dismissive when I asked a question. Now, I didn't know that the gentleman was serving someone else one isle over, but they could have said "I'm sorry I can help you in a bit when I'm finishing with this customer in the next isle", but instead was very abrupt, and impatiently snapped that they were with someone else. Had I of know they were helping a customer somewhere else in the store. I would have waited patiently. Looking at some other very similar reviews, it looks to be a pattern of poor and rude behaviour from the owner. This is too bad, because the store itself has wonderful products. read more

I came in with two small dogs to buy several items. The man ( not sure if he was the owner or an employee) ignored me. I said hello and asked if he had a soap dispenser. He then scowled and scolded me saying that dogs aren't allowed in the store. I said I didn't realize cause there is no sign and I often visit kitchen equipment stores with no issues. I told him that it would Be advantageous to put a sign if he felt this way; he retorted and said " most people would Think of asking". I do not mind if people don't want dogs in their store; however, his disposition was extremely unwelcoming and he was a rude man. I have plenty of lovely stores I shall continue to support. I am from Vancouver and each time I am in Toronto I love to stop in at Peppermills to see what is new, the lovely displays and yes, even the grouchy owner you all claim is there. I must only have ever had the kind and engaging owner, the one who let my son have his gift certificate validated even though he had lost the paper copy (he keeps a great record of that). This trip I stopped in and found Woll cookwear on display. I bought a piece and have since tried it out, I am in love with this cookware. They may have it on Amazon but I would much prefer to have the backing of this store than try to argue with Amazon. Will always go to the store for suggestions for gifts, gadgets and just to chat. read more

If you are looking for any kind of kitchen gadgets or kitchen items (dishes, glassware, pots, knives, etc) come here and you'll be amazed at the beautiful things to make your kitchen look lovely and your cooking skills be in point. It's a small store located on Yonge, but packed full of items that you need plus a few you never knew you needed until you see them here! Peppermills, mortar/pestle grinders; cutting boards, beautiful dishes, flatware, honestly it's all here. It's kind of like Kitchen Stuff Plus but I find the selection here a bit more 'unique'. UPDATE: The store "DID NOT" explain any rules to me when they told me to leave the store and that was a few weeks ago when things were getting iffy and not like like now. If they don't want customers in the store than they should have posted a sign or not let me in the first place and stand guard at the door. Instead, in their email their first email they chose to "lie" that they were unpacking and opened at a customer's request. If this is the case, why were they both standing with each other and not unpacking? The store is arguing with me via email despite me requesting they stop after their first email, they prefer to harass! They are obviously very argumentative and confrontational, as per numerous postings from other people. DO NOT shop here. there is a similar store named "COOKERY" with friendly women north on yonge/eglinton that won't argue with customers. terrible experience. i was walking by and advising some items in the window and after awhile realized their open. i was inside for 1 minute but don't think the clerks saw me. when the old male clerk finally saw me and asked if i needed help, i said i was just browsing. he said "no browsing" a couple of times so i said okay "i'm leaving" repeatedly loudly so he'd hear me since i was already leaving but that didn't stop him from telling me to leave again. inside, one woman bought something and a couple whom i don't believe bought anything. this is a small store with kitchen stuff such as pots, dishes, cutlery, etc. and they do not sell food so not something you decide in 2 seconds because items cost more and take up more space than a pastry so browsing is required. i don't understand why he's staying open if he doesn't want people to look/browse or perhaps it's a racist situation. i do not know, but will not return ever and let everyone i know. read more

I have a medical service dog who is clearly marked, wears a harness and is legally certified. I carry his ID with me in my wallet at all times just incase. I went in to look around and possible fine some tall glasses. After less than a minute in the store, an older man came up to me and (extremely rudely) told me that because of 'your dog, your drink and your speakers' I had to leave the store. I tried to have a reasonable discussion with him, but he would talk over me telling me to get out - finally I said 'listen to me Sir, if theres no drinks that's okay I will leave because of the drink, but this is a medical service dog' -he turned his back while I was talking, scoffed at me and told me to leave. I did not see a sign for no drinks on the door when I entered, otherwise I would not have gone in. I had an iced latte with a tight lid and a straw. I had headphones in my ears that were not even playing anything - but even if they were playing my podcast, I've never heard of that not being allowed in a store. This was clearly discrimination against my disability and having my medical service dog. A couple of customers actually left the store with me, outside told me that they were upset by how he talked to me and that I had handled myself very professionally, and that they will never shop there again. He was so rude to me, I can't even remember a time that I've been treated so poorly. read more

While driving down Yonge St. this afternoon, I stopped here to pick up some cookie cutters for my wife. (She stayed in the car...finishing a cigarette she had just lit.) I found some, but was asked immediately what I was looking for by the same elderly fellow mentioned in other posts. He quickly showed me others...then reprimanded me and told me to quit smoking. Initially I was so shocked, I ignored him...then realized he had no damn business making such a comment, so I just left. There are clearly a multitude of businesses in this town where you can shop without being subjected to the kind of judgemental ignorance this store seems to deliver on a regular basis. This store has moved to a bright, clean location at Yonge St. just south of Eglinton on the West side. I was there today and the gentleman who owns the store was very kind to me, showing me some cool gadgets. One was something I already own so I know he is correct (a heavy handheld lemon squeezer). The other item was something I was sooooo tempted to buy (a mandolin) but I'll wait until next time I pop by there. He's still unpacking boxes and setting up - I'd say 80% ready. There are TONS of things to browse and buy and everything is top quality keep-forever stuff. I just read the other two yelp reviews here and one was very positive, yet only 3 stars were given. The other was mildly negative (bitter, I thought, considering what really happened) and a cruel 1 star was given. I have been a Peppermill customer for about 17 years. When I had my first job I set up my first kitchen with many items purchased at the now-closed Hazelton location. I hope my 5 stars (and a few other nice customers doing the same) can help bring Peppermill's yelp score up to where it should be, which is around 4.5 stars. read more

I went in to purchase a small item to add to a birthday gift on a rainy day in March. There were no sales personal to be seen and I proceeded to pick up an item to examine. I located my item after some search in a box below and an elderly salesman appeared and reprimanded me for handling the merchandise. I was taken aback by his rudeness, and decided to purchase item regardless because it was a gift. He proceeded to reprimand me for walking on his newly wiped floor with wet feet! Peppermills has become my one-stop place to shop for cooking and tablewares. The owner is knowledgeable and bends over backwards to satisfy the customer's needs. This many sound corny but it expresses my sentiment perfectly. If Albert does not have what I am looking for then it probably is not available anywhere in Canada. This Christmas I purchased a hand operated Peugeot coffee mill for my wife. She loves her morning coffee. This mill gives the most uniform grind I have ever seen and the coffee is superb. Went in today to look for a few things for the kitchen and spoke to an older man. I brought up the topic of sharpening stones and he said he didn't have any because his clients don't know how to use them. Further saying he only has these hand sharpeners. When I declined the product he questioned me if knew how to use the product I was looking for.... Not only does he think people don't know how to use something he doesn't carry but he questions your knowledge if you do! I left laughing because he said a few things that were 100%wrong (that will destroy your expensive equipment) and I realized he said it so you would come back in a month to replace it. I would only assume he would blame you for the damage. Not only would I not go back there I would warn people about going there. I'm no amateur in the kitchen but he thinks he's the creator of the kitchen itself. Make a humble pie in your fancy kitchen and have a taste and know there are people out there that know more then YOU think.. If you want someone to treat you right walk 10 minutes north to Degrees. Rude owner or Sales clerk. Tall, dark hair, male. A couple walked into the store just seconds before I did. We were all looking around in the same general area. He asked them if they needed help and the lady replied "we're just looking around to see if there's anything we want later..then we know where to buy it" I added "me as well" I was particularly interested in a product around $200.00 that everyone else sells for approx $40.00 (but I liked this one even if it costs more) I was told not to touch too much because he has to sell it. To reiterate the previous comment, the owner has some of the worst customer service skills I've seen in a long time, which we experienced first hand tonight. My girlfriend and I were waiting for a nearby restaurant to open its doors so we thought we'd check this store out. An older female couple walked into the empty store just in front of us, and the second they walked in, the owner eyeballed them the whole time, following them around the store as if they were a bunch of thieves. At one point one of the girls picked up a product to examine it, to which the owner hurried over and said, "Don't touch that sir, you may break it." First of all, that was a female you just called sir and even after hearing her voice you still didn't apologize, and second of all she's a older woman. To treat her as if she's some criminal is reprehensible. Then came our turn. My girlfriend was genuinely looking into spirulinas. She saw one she was interested in and asked the owner how much it costs, to which he said $30. She thought it was a good price and then asked me to check online for some reviews, and if they checked out she would have bought it. No more than 10 seconds after whipping out the cellphone to do some research, the owner saunters over to us and says, "Don't do that in this store. Do that outside." We look incredulously at him and ask what we did that's so offensive? and he says, "Don't online shop in this store, if you're gonna do that, leave." To which we did. I'm sorry but if you're going to charge more for the products in the store, your store experience better be top notch. Instead we walked in to a store full of empty cardboard boxes lying around everywhere, and an owner who could use a few, not just one, customer service courses, and in the case of speaking to the ladies, a human interaction 101 class to boot. 0/10 experience, would never step foot in this store again. read more

The store is okay but the staff is less then friendly. I went in to buy something that I knew they had after researching it online. I asked the owner about accessories for the item and when he would start carrying them. He insisted that the company does not make accessories. I told him about my research and he still insisted that the company did not make accessories. I had to pull up the company's website on my phone and show him. His story then changed and he said the he would be getting the accessories in the spring. I don't see why you need to be argumentative with your customers especially when you can get most stuff online now. read more

If you need it in the kitchen, Albert has the best available in stock. A great new shop that opened on Yonge Street! My husband and I were cycling and stopped there and were welcomed by a charming and very helpful gentleman. Beautiful kitchen stuff, fun Japanese mugs, practical cutting boards, beautiful Conran plates, cool kitchen gadgets etc, etc.... We bought a beautiful water decanter that can hold ice cubes, lemon, cucumber or orange slices that will not fall while pouring the water, colourful Pantone mugs, special herb scissors and a gadget to remove strings and tops from green beans. The owner was attentive but not in a positive way, rather impertinent and arrogant, my wife and her coworker advised me not to go there ( had the impression he might be racist ) but I thought I would at least visit and see what kind of culinary equipment he had to offer with my Japanese student. I have over 30 yrs experience in French and Italian cuisine so I am knowledgable in the culinary arts. He has a limited selection of quality cookware, at least he had Le Creuset but did not see any Emile Henry or Mauviel. He only stocked Wusthof knives, no Misono/Korin or Global. Obviously for the hobbyist as there was a distinct absence of molds for plating I thought he would at least have some Kuchenprofi. Not the worst place for selection but do yourself a favour, go to Degrees @ 2588 Yonge it's better by lightyears or go to Academy of Culinary Arts on Bayview South of Yonge. It is a step up from Kitchen Stuff Plus but other than hipsters what kind of chef would buy the tools of their craft there? It is like a guitarist buying his SG at Best Buy, come on people. I might add a lot of stock at Peppermill's appears to be discontinued items. read more

I have read the previous reviews before commenting and it seems that they are mixed. The first time i entered the store was out of curiosity i looked briefly but never was approached by the owner and this is totally fine as. the second time was a little more recently i was looking to buy a chefs knife. It was the third time i entered the store on the morning of writing this review that really shocked me. I had been talking on the phone prior to entering the store, as i entered and started to look around as i was looking to purchase a knife sheath , as i was talking on the phone the owner approached me and asked me if i needed anything and i politely replied "I'm just looking for now thank you" and then he muttered something, i asked him what it was he has said and he so rudely replied that i should have my headphones in and talk on the phone in the store so everyone can hear my conversation. i looked around and there was no one in the store and he continued to tell me how rule i was being. ever so puzzled i look told me you obviously don't need my business and said i will leave. If i had been yelling or speaking crudely over the phone i would understand his request but honestly so you work in a library and how is that any way to treat a customer. i see that other people have had a similar experience worth the rude owner. more over the second time i was in the store my friend had asked him some questions about the knifes and his information was COMPLETELY WRONG and yet confident. read more
