Satay chicken vermicelli, part of the $10.25 satay chicken set
Michelle T.

Pepper Wok 大家好 All the HK aunties 姨姨 and uncles 叔叔 have been raving about this place for months about their flavour. It's a very simplistic, no frills kind of hk cct 茶餐廳. Prices can be a little steep for some stuff. POSITIVES: Simplistic menu and options Most flavours were decent! Meat had meat taste. They used legit German sausage Decent AC for such a tiny place NÉGATIVES: Tight seating w/ cheap setup Staff and other customers are odd. Not the friendliest and they have some attitude. Didn't give a number for waiting, we had a kerfuffle with the other customers Sauces are too viscous, feels gross after Some prices are a little steep ($7.75 for Kaya toast!!) Portions are smaller than other ccts I might come back but only after 3pm, which is when they start to be less busy.

Busy busy place during weekend lunch. I have ordered 4 lunch set and 3 are excellent. The lunch set are mostly around $14-16 which comes with HK milk tea and coffee. Squid noodle in soup have excellent big squid ball . Hainan chicken is smooth and juicy. Seafood fried rice has lots of shrimp and some scallops. All serves fast and hot. It's only the instant noodle Lo me in a bit salty. Parking is limit and the restaurant is crowded. I will definitely go again.

chicken leg with curry sauce, comes with small soup and drink. So simple yet so delicious $14.25

Love these type of restaurants. Homey food and menu changes periodically. Simple yet executed well. Unpretentious, eaten with comfort. Lucky for me service was good unlike others who experienced the opposite. It gets very busy during noon time I suggest going before or after the rush. Large parking lot outside.

This is your standard HK style restaurant. The staff is great as they are quick, nice and polite. We got in for lunch and got the last free table on a weekday. Pretty busy but not insane. The tables are close but not too close. The food is great, authentic and decent value. The decor isn't amazing but that's not why you would come here. Support these local small businesses as they are trying to keep the HK traditions alive.

Pork chop with vermicelli in curry soup and double egg + toast, comes with drink (we got milk tea)

Great prices and tasty food! They have a very simple menu (especially compared to some other HK cafes) with super affordable meal options for $9-13 each, or around $6 for snack items! The best way to describe the service is very quick and efficient. They took our order and prepared the food all within 5-10 mins. The restaurant was modestly close to capacity, so I wouldn't consider it too busy despite being around 12:30-1pm at noon. Not sure if staff can understand English, as we ordered in Cantonese, but it shouldn't be an issue if you point to the menu item. I suspect this place may be cash/debit only, but did not confirm. I would air on the side of caution to have cash funds available, as it's possible that if credit transactions are available, there may still be a transaction fee. We got the smoke salmon pasta with rose sauce (large size) which comes with soup + drink (we got milk tea), and the pork chop with vermicelli in curry soup and double egg + toast, which also comes with drink. The pasta sauce had a nice sweetness and creaminess to it! I love my sauce super saucy, and there was a nice sauce-to-pasta ratio. The pasta is cooked to a noodle-like consistency, very HK style lol so don't expect al dente pasta since it's just not a thing. The smoked salmon I was pleasantly surprised was not super salty, so when paired with the rose sauce it was perfection! I got a large size for this dish, and it was a good size to make me full + share some. I think the small size would be a better portion size for me in the future, but the large is not *that* big in my opinion, so judge accordingly! The pork chop was very standard, so nothing super special but still good! Prices are are fantastic in my opinion. I'd like to come by to try some of the other dishes and the sizzling plates! The sizzling plates are a bit more expensive at around $20 a plate. The menu + other dishes are pasted on the wall, so take a look around too! They have both Chinese and English for the menu items, so you should be able to figure out what's on the menu!

Food was just like any Cha Chaan Teng food. I wouldn't say it's of the best quality, they're average. From my two visits, I've gotten pretty positive experiences with the service. They're friendly and responsive. But I'm for sure coming back. Look at the decor, if you know, you know.

hainanese chicken rice
Jason M.

So this would've been a 5 star had it not been for the current price of the hainanese chicken rice. I've seen it go from $11.75 to a whopping $14.50 pre-tax currently and it's getting harder and harder to justify ordering it. That being said, it's still the best hainanese chicken in town (neck and neck w/ restoran malay but I give this one the edge). Completely de-boned, chicken is super moist/tender and the rice actually has the perfect chicken stock flavour steeped into it (not dry at all). Back when it was $11.75 this was an absolute steal. It was what cantonese ppl like to call "peng, leng, jeng". Now it's "not peng, still leng and still jeng". Had to drop them down to a 4 star because recently, they changed the takeout container to a smaller one (went from a large, circular one to a rectangular one) and so the overall portion size decreased drastically. So essentially, the price has been jacked all the way up AND you get less food now. Frustrating because I have to get ripped off in order to get my hainanese chicken rice fix. *Disclaimer* I haven't tried any of the other stuff on the menu. I only order chicken rice from this place LOL.

Pepper Wok has been operating for over a decade. I am sure it has gotten the business model down padded and correct. We visited one Saturday for lunch. There was a line up waiting for its opening. Hint #1 - loyal repeated customers who rather wait than going next door. Ambiance was no frills, down to earth neighborhood style and dated. Hint #2 - the root (beginning) of Hong Kong tea cafe was cheap and good; prettiness is not important. So Pepper Wok is a traditional HK tea cafe. There is no contemporary nice decor and patrons expect the saving be translated to lower prices. Hint #3 - prices are LOW. In some cases, the value (volume - price ratio) is better than food courts. Now we can talk about food quality and services. Food quality is A-OK. Some hits and misses. We ordered Hainanese Chicken Rice and Smoked Salmon on Pasta. Hainanese chicken (deboned) was overcooked; chicken oil rice was *super awesome*. I guess the chicken oil was mostly drained out and fed to the rice (LOL). Smoked salmon could not go wrong. Pasta was overcooked but tasty nevertheless. Milk tea was quite good. Services was awesome. Very friendly and efficient. The servers treated us like old neighbors (we were not). They offer a lot of combos. It is dazzling to read the many posters on the walls. The posters make good entertainment.

Tan tan noodles with deep fried pork chop

I have visited this location several times. The service is always decent, with staff being quick and friendly. I always order their Dan Dan noodles, which are very good. However, the ambiance could use some improvement. The seating is quite tight, and the furniture seems worn out. The place is pretty small, so if it gets busy, there might be a longer wait.

This place got my attention after it got so much hate. So I decided to try for myself. Ive only gotten take out so far due to covid, ive eaten my take out right away in the car and waited til i get home. Food is solid. The tan tan noodles are hand downs my favourite dish and i have to get it every time. And then order a second dish to try something new! Im from HK, so this HK cafe definitely reminds me of home.

Hainanese chicken rice
Jenny Y.

Authentic HK style cafe. Interior looks quite rundown and it's very small. Probably can seat around 25-30 people max. Decent portions for most dishes with reasonable prices. They don't have an extensive menu but probably enough to satisfy both adults and kids. Closed on Tuesdays.

Special menu

Overall experience round up to 4 Star. Fair price : 4 Star Good portion : 5 star Packed and not very comfortable seating : 3 Star Clean but very basic dining environment : 3 Star Food taste is ok, but some dishes can be overly saturated with flavor, be it sweetness or salty. They can definitely tone it down and still taste fine. : 3.5 star.

I went to get take out last month and it was busy (busy as in many people waiting but everyone is keeping a safe distance). The food was great, and very nice with soup. Not many places gives soup and drink at the same time. Also, tons of people use fake account or just signed up Yelp to make one review to trash this place. They probably never ate here but received 50 cents to make fake reviews from their great leader.

To be honest, it is not perfect in many dimensions: It's not spacious and feels too greedy to have too many tables. It is not a good place if you really want to have an elegant environment to have your meals. The servers are a bit aggressive. But despite of all those disadvantages, I still give it 5 stars because it has the PERFECT food! I almost dropped some tears when I tasted my first bite of the dish I ordered, stored fried beef with tomatoes and eggs. I think what it does best is that it adapt its dishes to use the local produce and meat, and still keep the legit HongKong food flavors. My wife ordered the stir fried instant noodles and it was full of pepper, mushrooms and soy sauce flavor. Beef was nicely sliced thin and noodles tasted fine. One thing I'd say is their hot sauce by the tableside is quite tasty! Milk tea tasted standard as well. Service was fine too. Not a big space, but can probably seat 25-30 people.

The menu here is reasonably priced for the HK cafe food that's available till 5pm. We were impressed by the huge portions & surprisingly good flavours. Baked Fish Fillet w/ Cheese & Cream Sauce was savoury & arrived hot loaded with crispy fillets. Fried rice underneath filled the large oven dish. Curry Beef Brisket Rice was stewed well to achieve really tender tendons. These are still two of our go-to dishes here. We did notice the environment gets loud from time-to-time, when it's fairly packed with patrons but some have split to the new rice roll spot nearby. Skip it or hit it? There will be a dessert after the meal, a bowl of tofu flower for each person. That dessert is a true hidden gem. Silky smooth and moderate sweetness and perfect warmth. We ended up getting the ham macaroni soup with a cheese ham sandwich combo, along with the O Street signature beef sandwich and fries from their new menu. Despite how busy it was on a Saturday, the food came out at a pretty reasonable speed, which I appreciated. The macaroni soup was just okay, very much the kind of simple comfort food that fills you up, but nothing especially memorable. I was most excited for the signature beef sandwich, but it didn't fully meet my expectations. The burger/sandwich itself was smaller than I imagined, and it only had about 2-3 pieces of beef brisket inside with marinated bell peppers and their homemade sauce. The sauce leaned sweeter than expected, which might work for some people, but personally I was hoping for something more savoury and more generous with the beef. However, the brisket was tender, which was a win... ish. Overall, still a decent spot if you're craving classic HK cafe vibes and variety, especially for a casual meal with family.
