I ordered the BEEF BRISKET VERMICELLI, which is $8.99 now with their most recent price increase. There was a good helping of meat and noodles. Brisket was especially good today - not overly fatty but also not too lean that it gets stuck in the teeth. The broth was flavorful to pair, which is important, especially with vermicelli (since it doesn't really absorb) but beware, that's where the hidden calories are! The combos also don't come with steamed fish if that's what you're craving for. You can order that on the side for $21 and it's great portion too. Their food comes quite quick and generous too. If you spend above a certain amount (I'm guessing $60) they give you chicken or sweet and sour pork for free. Service mainly was good, just one server I wasn't too pleased with. By 8:30pm they make sure you are reminded that they're closing in half an hour. Love coming there for lunch and it is always busy there. At night, their restaurant turns into a place for dinner only, serving Cantonese style dishes. I also didn't realize they have another location, the one on Denison and Kennedy albeit that location is more of a bakery and smaller but they still offer food and they used to have tables inside for sit-in and outside on the patio during Covid-19 summer. The bill was $31 and some change, so I left them a tip of $2 and some change the waitress comes back and said that not enough, and you need to leave more tip. If you order a certain amount (I believe over 25?), you will get a free sweet and sour pork dish, and a free fish if it's over 35 (I believe). You don't need to order too much as 4 ppl just need 3 or 2 dishes to share. We ordered at least 7 dishes, 4 drinks and the bill was around $70 (fairly cheap as the portion in other restaurants would probably be $100+). We went to this little HK-style cafe to have lunch and we arrived just in time before the weekday lunch rush hour! Hai Tang Cafe is not unlike all the other HK-style cafes. It serves all-day breakfast, lunch, and dinner combos and is located on 16th Ave. near Woodbine Ave. We ordered several things to share: Beef Satay Noodle in Soup with Toast with Butter and Two Eggs, and Curry Chicken on Rice. We actually changed the all-day combo from the Preserved Veggie and Shredded Pork with Vermicelli in Soup to the Beef Satay one. The server, although very busy and running around trying to get everyone seated and ordering, was very kind and able to cater to us very efficiently. After hearing good things about this cafe, we decided to try out for lunch takeout. However, we were very disappointed with their phone order system. We ordered a beef tomato rice combo and the lady on the phone confirmed the order before making it. We specifically ordered in Cantonese and English, hoping the staff would understand our order. Then when we got the pickup, they ended up giving us a completely different order which contained mainly of fried rice and tiny bits of beef. By the time we discovered this error, we had already left. To get another meal, wait 20minutes for them to make plus the 20min drive was not worth the drive back. Morning and lunch specials run from $5-$10 and for dinner they have some really good set menus such as lobster dinner for 4 for about $42. Really can't go wrong with that amount. Dishes are about $10 for ala carte and includes complimentary soup and dessert. This place gets slammed during lunch and dinner rushes so either go early or call ahead to reserve. Good comfort Chinese food here at an affordable price! Came here on a Saturday afternoon based on a friend's suggestion and did not expect it to be this busy! The baked dishes looked really popular so I ordered the Baked Pork Chop with Spaghetti in Portuguese Sauce. The sauce was pretty good, like a mild curry flavour. I wish they added more sauce though as the spaghetti was pretty dry at the bottom. My partner got the Curry Beef Brisket on Rice which was delicious! My favourite part of the dish was probably the potatoes, slightly crispy to give it extra texture. This is our usual lunch and afternoon tea place given its reasonable pricing. I think we have been here more than 10 times, enough to provide a fair rating of this place. Parking lot is small but it's usually not hard to get a spot. Lunch sets range from $7-$9. Afternoon sets range from $3.29-$6.50. We came here on Monday at 1:30pm and surprisingly we were able to get a table very quickly. It is usually super packed on the weekend. We got the booth as we have a baby and the car seat could fit into the booth nicely. My husband was able to sit next to the baby with enough room to eat. We usually order these plates for takeout but dining in is so much better! Since they're baked items, it's so much hotter and more fresh when they're baked and served in a ceramic plate as opposed to being packed in aluminium trays. The cream sauce was the best sauce as it has a coconut flavour to it. The pork chop was very tender as always. There were enough pork chop to cover all the rice. The rice was fried before it was baked so extra points went there. The spaghetti is my usual lunch order since I have tried numerous places and I consider this to be one of the best baked spaghetti. The ox tongue was very tender as well. There were around 6 pieces of ox tongues, quite a good portion for its price. The milk tea has a very strong tea flavour and it's not watered down. Service wise, don't expect the servers to be very nice. This is a busy place and they don't have time to pamper you. They will give you attitude occasionally if they're too stressed. Everyone gets a free soup and dessert for dinner (usually red bean or green bean dessert). I frequently come here for breakfast on the weekend and lunch or afternoon snack on a weekday and it's always been packed. It's a lot cheaper than other HK-style cafe, however on my most recent trip they seem to have raised their prices :| If they continue to increase their price I don't think I'll be visiting as frequently anymore. Service is so-so. Don't expect excellent service, but for the price and food it's good for a quick meal. I sometimes order dinner take-out but rarely do 'cause the service is really slow. I once order 4 dishes and they told me the wait would be about 45 mins. I told them I would come back in 45 mins and when I did, they only had 2 of the dishes were ready and that they ran out of ingredients for the other 2 dishes, so I had to order something else and wait again. My typical go-to orders are satay beef with vermicelli in soup, macaroni in soup with porkchop (so yummy) and 2 eggs, or the 8 piece chicken wings (also really yummy) with cold lemon tea (kinda dislike how they ask for extra $0.75 for ice...). On the good note, my HK HOT TEA was great to keep me warm up in this cold weather but however the seafood meat and sauce were a bit watery and it had no flavour taste that I was a bit disappointed. This is a busy restaurant off a side street that is hidden from most people. When you walk through the door, the aroma of freshly baked bread flows through the air and hits you like a bullet train. This place takes their bread very seriously with many different flavours, shapes and sizes. My favourite one is called 'Pineapple Bread' that is nothing like a pineapple, the top is a flaky custard on top of a rising bun. The taste is amazing and it comes with a quarter inch of butter in the middle where it is a heavenly creation. Though, it may not be too healthy but its delicious. My favourite part of this restaurant is there is a quick grab and go with freshly baked bread but on the other side of the bakery is a Hong Kong style café that offers noodles in many different varieties. Went with my grandma for a birthday dinner. We came Monday night and the place wasn't full so there was no line but it was packed. Lots of people getting takeout as well We got steamed tilapia, half yellow skin chicken, stir fried rice noodle with beef (got chicken instead) and yeung chow fried rice. PLUS they gave us a free plate of sweet and sour pork AND it came with complimentary soup and dessert! Also complimentary tea Both the steamed tilapia & steamed chicken had really flavourful sauces and were both extremely tender. The sauce soaked into the chicken and fish which made them really moist as well. The fish really big, 1.5lbs I'm guessing, the usual is 1lb. The chicken was a bit smaller than average but for the price you can't really complain. The chicken had to be big enough because we couldn't finish and had about half the dish leftover to take home. The fried rice was seasoned and the flavours worked really well together. The bbq pork and mixed vegetables was plentiful, had less shrimp but my grandma can't eat it anyways. The rice wasn't oily and wasn't dry at the same time which is hard to find. The stir fried rice noodle were also seasoned very well, although it had an odd tangy taste that I cant put my finger on. They exchanged the beef for chicken without any issues, since my grandma can't eat it. I am assuming by using chicken instead of beef, it threw off the flavour profile, which is my fault. The free sweet and sour pork was extremely crispy(crunchy), the best I've had surprisingly.
