My friend and I stayed here recently and had a wonderful experience. The accommodation is decent. The room we stayed in is self contained with dining area/kitchen and a bedroom, which is big enough for two people (although it would've been better to have two separate beds ). The kitchen is equipped with cooking utensils, plastic cups, plates, silverware, pots and pans etc... It was both our first time to stay in a bed and breakfast place so we didn't really know what to expect. Not that we mind tidying up the place, but our room didn't get cleaned everyday. I'm assuming it's because it's not a hotel accommodation. It wasn't a big problem coz we were out most of our stay anyway. Breakfast is of course included. We are not heavy eater so whatever they have served every morning is enough to fill us up. The staff are very friendly and helpful!! They gave us some information about the place and direction as to where to go hiking, places to see etc... It was such a laidback lifestyle and we're glad to be away from the hustle and bustle of the city even for just a short time. A great experience overall !!!

I'm hesitant to write a review because it is such a hidden gem. Once people start finding out about it I may have to book months in advance and definitely don't want it to become commercialized! Pepper Tree SUPER affordable, a non profit organization (no taxes!!) and was recently remodeled and re opened in March of 2009. The beautiful room we had was adjacent to the main house and very quiet. It was open, airy, spacious, and perfectly decorated with lots of special touches everywhere. We even had a large kitchen furnished with everything you needed. The kitchen door led to a pathway where you can go right into the main house's kitchen! The house was stunning, and I want their kitchen replicated in my future dream home. Total chef style with only Vegetarian food allowed, delicious breakfast every morning, and fruits/snacks throughout the day. The staff was amazing - very friendly, efficient and wonderful to talk to. The same goes with the guests that were staying there. They all came from interesting backgrounds, and there for a quiet, zen like retreat. No TV's, radios or distractions. Just you and nature. The property is well maintained - the perfect place to do your yoga, read, paint, draw, do your poetry or just be. Come alone or with your special someone, and be prepared to be blown away by the natural energy that exudes from every corner of this one of a kind property. There are tons of hiking trails nearby and outdoor activities galore. Krishnamurti's library is also on the same property and just a short stroll through the orange groves to get to from the main house. There are workshops, and lecture held there weekly. The meditation room was out of this world. The entire experience I had was nothing like I ever had before. Even though it feels like your miles away from the real world, Ojai is maybe 2 miles away, and there is a fantastic restaurant on the main road that leads to the retreat that served the BEST pizza I've had in California. There are so many more things to be said, but everyone has their own unique experience so you'll just have to come see for yourself.

    The Stravinsky suite. Excellent!

We were also celebrating our first grandchild as well as our younger son's engagement, and we couldn't have found a better spot for quality time and making memories. The outdoor spaces are extraordinary, gorgeous nature, minutes from town and shopping with resort amenities - had an all-day bocce tournament, epic morning workouts in the giant yoga room, ping pong + frisbee games, long soaks in the hot tub, and hikes to the nearby picturesque river trail. Also outdoor lunches with vistas of the mountains and lush tropical foliage. The beds in the charming ranch home are super comfy and we had some excellent game nights and dinners at home, plus great meals out (Roblars, Rory's Place, The Hip Vegan, The Dutchess). Our granddaughter slept well with her parents in the guest house, and our granddog was happy to run around in a safe fenced area. Communication with Lisa was perfect. Can't wait to return...A+++

Walking the grounds is such an experience as you always find something new and exciting around the corner; for example the vegetable garden we found towards the back of the property and all the inviting sitting areas scattered throughout. You can have a fun gathering at the pool or take a stroll and find a place to be alone; maybe read or meditate. This place has it all! One evening we had dinner on the patio and the setting could not have been any better: the string lights, the cool stone table that could seat our large party and the amazing tall trees. It felt like we were at a tropical island. Many of us traveled from out of state and the hours it took to get to Rolling Thunder Ranch was well worth it! The only negative is....wish we stayed longer.

The website, press releases (e.g. Goop), and advertising they have done does not resemble the real experience. The pictures seemed to have been taken before new ownership, since much of the property seems either rundown, or currently under construction. Yes, it is secluded, they have sheep, the food (breakfast only) is home cooked and pretty good but not worth paying 30-40% more per night than what you will pay at other much nicer locations in Ojai. The value for Thacher house will leave you feeling like your wallet has been milked (see picture), sheepish, confused, and feeling like you have been taken advantage of.

Note that if you try to rent, you will NOT be staying in ANY of the properties shown on the website. Reviews on goop are on the properties that have been sold so take it with a grain of salt. The rental $$$ is overpriced for what you get -- the owner rents out his own house (admittedly furnished and designed well) and is currently working on another property (at a more remote location) which will be marketed as "Thacher House" too. The breakfast food prepared is fresh and delicious but fairly minimal considering the cost. Concept is aspirational, experience is unique, but for well traveled and sophisticated consumers, extremely overpriced for what it is.

I was asked to pre-pay $710 for two nights - expensive, but Ojai isn't cheap and I thought a "private spa & retreat" would be worth it. Basically, the 'private cottage' described to us was in fact an additional room partially attached to the owner's house. I can only liken it to staying with some distant cousin, from the dated, worn sheets to the direct view into their private living area, separated only by a couple of steps to their outdoor patio. Upon arrival, Stacy the owner (who I mustn't fail to mention was sweet and attentive, calling several times before our arrival to ask about dietary requirements, etc), informed us that she was going out of town and leaving 3 male friends in charge of the property. For some people this may not have been an issue - and you welcome the weird in Ojai - but when you don't feel any sense of privacy, your room has doors leading to other guest rooms, there's an angry dog, and the private spa is a tiny, overly landscaped back yard with plastic green chairs, then all sense of indulgence and romance goes out the window. I probably wouldn't have minded if i wasn't being charged a luxury resort rate of $355 a night for the experience and could see myself actually finding the place charming in a david lynch movie kind of way if at least half the price. We cancelled our second nights stay with Stacy, promising to refund our unused night. We will see - I'm giving her two stars for the benefit of the doubt, but if not then I couldn't recommend this place less. I'm not in the habit of going on negative rants, but because this place has apparently been operating for 14 years without any reviews to go on and a website that it 'under contruction', I wanted to at least give like-minded guests the much needed heads-up.

It's a…read morefundraiser for the Ojai Music Festival and its BRAVO Music Education programs, and presented by the Ojai Festival Women's Committee. Each year they typically curate and present four or five homes for the participants to tour. At the same time, a holiday marketplace is held over the entire weekend. you can visit the homes on either Saturday or Sunday, but only once to each home, as they mark off your attendance on your paper ticket. The Marketplace is open both days. This year, they held the market in Libbey Park, and had a plethora of vendors! I ordered our tickets online, and we picked them up at Will Call in the park. Our neighbor also went with us for the drive on a beautiful autumn day, and to check out the homes and their gardens, as well. DH and I took a break for a couple of years after Covid shut down the event. We were out of town last year, as an example. The HHT is normally the third weekend in November. Decor in the homes is provided by local florists, and often feature natural elements, including cut greenery, roses, fruits like pomegranates, oranges, and apples, branches & twigs, and more of that kind of styling. The decorations can range from harvest/Thanksgiving themes, to hints of Christmas, to even New Year's Eve. For my taste, I could go with More! Bigger! However, the homes are often large, and how much decorating can one expect a florist to do for a fundraising event? They are usually done in extremely tasteful style, and as an extension of the character of the home. Many of the homes have their own amazing and unique architectural features, and most also have art collections which the owners are gracious enough to share with the event's paying guests. It's like being able to tour a private gallery. This year was no exception. We had a wonderful afternoon of first shopping at the Marketplace (hello, stocking stuff scores!), and then first visiting a west end view home with a stunning Pink Moment vista, and a highly unique layout. The husband is a musician and producer and his studio was a sight to behold, along with the other aspects of the home. Next it was up Signal Street to one of the most stunning views of the valley from west to east that you might ever imagine. Framed by an infinity pool and an ultra-modern design, it's a signature house in many ways, including stunning art pieces. Next door on the same parcel is alternately one of the most charming cottages you might ever encounter. It was built in the style of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves from the movie, and with a Disneyland feel, as well. Inside dwells the most magical collection of childhood memorabilia, worthy of a museum. Finally, an east end orchard French-chateau inspired home, guest house, and gardens were the final destination on this year's tour. Amazing! Yes, we could live there. Beautiful detailing and craftsmanship showed throughout, and yet it felt cozy and comfortable. The peacefulness of their garden was enhanced by the flautist quartet playing in the garden. Each year, the homes on the tour change. You never know which neighborhoods you'll be visiting, or what style of home will be playing host to the tour. With the ties to the music festival, rotating performers present their musical stylings in the homes, too. It's an experience on many levels to attend this worthy fundraiser. I'm already looking forward to next year. I believe if you go to their website you can sign up to be notified by email about each year's event. Photos aren't allowed inside the homes, but a few exterior shots weren't discouraged, so these are just a taste.

And at least for some rooms, the views are phenomenal! So one star for the service, one for the view - if you pick the right room - make sure to ask! Unfortunately, the grounds really, really need a landscaping overhaul. Similarly, the room interiors and window coverings seem tired. Their "European" breakfast seemed no better than a Holiday Inn Express. A lot of it is prepackaged stuff. The "assorted cheeses" are identical to the pre-sliced packaged stuff from Vons as is the bread and bagels. The only effort put into appears to be the hard-boiled eggs (unpeeled, of course). They could easily step it up several notches by sourcing pastries from locals, making oatmeal to serve, and getting a decent cheese and meat selection, but after the second disappointing day of the exact same thing we headed to town for breakfast. For us, the most off-putting thing was all the ridiculous signs everywhere! We counted 22 separate signs from driving in the entrance to opening the door to our room - four or five were helpful. And then there's all the signage IN your room (did you really need to label the ice bucket as "Ice Bucket"???). It seems like someone just went to town with a label maker and laminator. Maybe just us, but we felt it was tacky, unnecessary and detracting.
