Who would give less than 5 stars for this amazing, 'historical' (?) nostalgic place? Mom and pop's run business since 1960. Yeah, it's old, food is "ok' (3-stars but it's preliminary an ice cream place), it's a bit 'ghetto' and you need to pay attention as to when your order is ready (they won't call names, only orders) but it's Vista's institution! Serving perfect old fashioned soft serves, shakes and a variety of very affordable frozen treats (4 stars). Kids love this place. There is always a line and a bit of a wait. Service is mediocre at best. But... 5 stars because that's the local businesses we need and can't let go away: Vista greedy city hall is about to let it be demolished to build condos... I really want to like this place, but the customer service was bad. I got a root beer float, I needed a lid for it. I asked for a lid, and the young guy working there yesterday gave me attitude. He ignored me and gave me a dirty look and just stood there looking angry. I asked again, and he handed it to me in an angry and disrespectful manner. He wanted me to be apologetic and treated me like I had done something really wrong. He needs to be trained in customer service, or he needs to be fired if he believes it's okay to behave like that. read more

There was a family enjoying their ice cream as we walked up. So many options to choose from. My niece picked strawberry soft serve dipped in chocolate. I kept it classic with vanilla soft serve on a cone. Very limited seating options. We waited less than 5 minutes for our cones. It's appeal is nostalgia, affordable and plenty of options to choose from. There isn't much special about it aside from that. It's just ice cream with toppings. I believe the sundaes don't even come with whipped cream standard. Think McDonald's sundae with one topping and you can pay for more. Dipped cones are good but again, nothing you can't get at weinerschitzel or Dairy Queen. Once in a while we would come as kids. I went to pepper tree tonight and one of your employees was so disrespectful when we waited longer then 20 min watched a party of 4 that we're behind me get there order first I was frustrated when I asked for the girls name she ignored me and I had to get my phone out I asked several times for her supervisor name and would not give it to me.At that point her disrespect loss me as a loyal customer.I did not want any ice cream and asked for my money back.. The kids working here are extremely rude, they get the orders wrong on multiple occasions and the cleanliness of the inside has deteriorated. I've been here so many times since it opened in the 50s that I could not even count. My dad would bring us all down for a nickel ice cream cone. It is a bit of what I call Vistacana. There are few places around Vista that are the same as they were when I was growing up. Many of my friends have moved away, but when they come back for a visit, we always go here for the memories, the camaraderie, and to hang out on the deck. I have passed by some evenings when it is cold and yet, there is a line to get ice cream. This place is an icon. What is cool is that Danny still works the grill from time to time. The place has been around for a long time. Such a nostalgic feeling when coming here now with my kids. The ice cream still tastes amazing, doesn't taste like the crummy stuff that everyone else serves nowadays. The customer service is good. I don't like how they cut the line at like 8:40 when they say they're open until 9. That's one thing I disagree with. Also with the whole rebuild coming soon... I don't think it'll be the same. Shakes: 10/10 Service: 0/10 We came tonight and were the only ones waiting and ordered two shakes. There were 4 people working. Another couple came after us and ordered one shake. They got theirs and we didn't think anything of it. After about 10 minutes of waiting (with no one else waiting) we walked up to ask. The girl said "oh yeah." We all make mistakes but 2/4 of the employees were in there just eating ice cream and the others were on their phones. The best part was two boys were visiting one of the employees and ordered (I didn't see them pay) and got their ice cream before us again. This is a Vista staple and institution and I would like to have given it 4 stars and the reason for 3 stars is not the food. The Food is ok. Not outstanding and not bad. Had the cheeseburger and fries and it is good. Also had the hot fudge banana split. I did switch to the hot fudge brownie sundae but they delivered the banana split. That is fine, it was ok, good. They did not have any peanut butter which was a bummer as I think it would have made the banana split even better. The ordering system and line and wait and hopefully get the right food as it is being yelled out, is the reason for the 3 stars. There has got to be a better way. A numbering system, a name system, anything is better than just yelling out the food being passed out to the customers. It is possible that people ordered some of the same food items so it is very annoying and confusing to grab your food or is it someone else's food. Hard to tell at first and frustrating. And after waiting 20 + minutes to order food on a Sunday night, it was annoying having to figure out if it was my food or someone else's food. However, given that this is a long-standing staple to Vista, and people have been coming here longer than the 17-plus years I have, I am actually comforted knowing it is still open. Especially when Sonic opened up next door, and a sea of Dairy Queens has started emerging. This place is delightfully average. The building itself is run down, the ordering system a bit confusing, the menus overwhelming and like I mentioned earlier, everything is lower in quality. The prices are still reasonable and take me back to childhood memories of gathering pocket change to get an ice cream cone. I will say, the area itself has been going through a gentrification over the past decade or so. There's still homeless scattered about, but everything is changing. Though this place opened in the 60s, whenever I visit, It makes me think of the kind of place teens hung out at in the 50's, girls sporting poodle skirts and saddle shoes, sipping on malt shakes with their bf in a varsity jacket, that sort of thing. I usually just go here for the ice cream and shakes; my favorite go-to being the mint and chip shake. I love how they pour melted chocolate into the shake and they turn into the choco chips as they're stirred in. Drool. Today the hubs and I were also hungry, so I tried the food for the first time and it's good! I got the mushroom burger - the patty is well done and flat. Reminds me of the style of burgers at Fosters Freeze. Shared chili fries and fried zucchini with husband. Thumbs up! Steeped in history and old-times goodness, you can get everything from a scoop of ice cream or a banana split to a malt shake. Think vintage ice cream experience. You should know that this is an outdoor experience but ordering window is covered. It is within walking distance to Vista Village. It is located within old town Vista along North Santa Fe. I got the peanut butter malt, my husband had the Reese's pieces and Oreo shake, and my daughter got a scoop of ice cream with sprinkles.
