I'd long been curious about Penzey's Spices, a national chain with one Indiana location that…read morehappens to be in the Castleton area. Tonight, I had a little time before a nearby film screening and decided I would finally drop in. First off, I instantly loved the vibe of this strip center location that's not too far down from Trader Joe's. This location is pretty solidly accessible with nearby accessible parking, appropriate curb-cuts, and a layout that I had almost no difficulty maneuvering. In case it's not obvious, Penzey's Spices specializes in spices. They also offer online ordering (free shipping with $49+). I have to admit I'm no expert when it comes to spices. I'm also not the most adventurous eater due to a fragile system. However, I've been venturing out of my comfort zone lately and I got lots of ideas from my visit to Penzey's. I have no idea how many spices they carry. It's a lot. I found the prices quite reasonable. I found items that I thought "I want to try that" and I mostly found the prices at such a good point that I would be willing to give it a try. Of course, some are more than others. That's life. Employees were friendly. The overall energy of the place was light and hopeful. They also offer gift boxes, trial bags, and accessories. However, when it comes down to it this is really a spice store and boy do they have amazing options. I believe in terms of corporate that Penzey's is based in Wisconsin. I'm just grateful they're here. They add such a spark to the Castleton area, and they seem perfect as a companion to the nearby Trader Joe's. It took me way too long to get here. It won't take me that long to get back.

Just pepper alone they probably have a dozen different flavor variations. We have over 80 spices in our pantry. Some of our go to are Frozen Pizza, it takes a Jack's frozen pizza to the next level. Others are Sandwich Sprinkle, Tuscan Sunset, Mural of Flavor and California Seasoned Pepper to name a few. If there isn't a location in your town you can always mail order from their website.

Market Square Popcorn is an Indianapolis-owned shop for artisan popcorn with a central home inside the main entrance hallway of Castleton Square Mall. While this is their home, it's not the only place you can find their products. This week, for example, you can feel their presence throughout Heartland International Film Festival as a sponsor including having packages inside the goodie bags for Heartland filmmakers. Popular flavors seem to be Market Square Mix, Sweet Heat (which I just tried for the first time this week), and Butter Caramel Crunch. Market Square Popcorn also offers custom tins and they have fundraising options (great rates for non-profits - you can keep 50% of sales. It's a great option to support local and raise money for your organization). The employees I've met have always been friendly. Like most popcorn, I tend to prefer it fresh and hot, however, even an experience like getting it in a goodie bag has been a positive experience. I recently tried the Sweet Heat and it really was a unique combination of a sweet taste with a definite kick. If I'm in the Castleton area or see them at an event, I always smile and appreciate the nostalgic Market Square Popcorn.

They have a little food area in the back of the store, near the pan dulce, where they have tamales ready and waiting in steamers. You need to go to the register first and let them know how many and which kind of tamales you want, and they'll get them for you. I bought a dozen-and-a-half of the pork with red chile tamales, and they are very good! In fact, I'm eating one right now as I type this review! The tamales have the perfect proportion of masa to meat, and they are cooked all the way through and not at all gummy, like some tamales can get when they're not cooked properly. They have other tamales besides pork, but I was only interested in pork when I visited, so I can't tell you for sure what other kinds they have. This is also a grocery store, so there are lots of packaged Mexican foods here, as well as a small panderia with some bolillos and a selection of pan dulce. This looks to be a great place to find Mexican candy (Lucas, Tajin, tamarindo candy, those little disks of chalky peanut butter with the picture of the abuelita on them, etc.), as I saw a lot of different candies.
