I'd long been curious about Penzey's Spices, a national chain with one Indiana location that happens to be in the Castleton area. Tonight, I had a little time before a nearby film screening and decided I would finally drop in. First off, I instantly loved the vibe of this strip center location that's not too far down from Trader Joe's. This location is pretty solidly accessible with nearby accessible parking, appropriate curb-cuts, and a layout that I had almost no difficulty maneuvering. In case it's not obvious, Penzey's Spices specializes in spices. They also offer online ordering (free shipping with $49+). I have to admit I'm no expert when it comes to spices. I'm also not the most adventurous eater due to a fragile system. However, I've been venturing out of my comfort zone lately and I got lots of ideas from my visit to Penzey's. I have no idea how many spices they carry. It's a lot. I found the prices quite reasonable. I found items that I thought "I want to try that" and I mostly found the prices at such a good point that I would be willing to give it a try. Of course, some are more than others. That's life. Employees were friendly. The overall energy of the place was light and hopeful. They also offer gift boxes, trial bags, and accessories. However, when it comes down to it this is really a spice store and boy do they have amazing options. I believe in terms of corporate that Penzey's is based in Wisconsin. I'm just grateful they're here. They add such a spark to the Castleton area, and they seem perfect as a companion to the nearby Trader Joe's. It took me way too long to get here. If you Love to Cook and Cook to Love then this is your go to spot for your spices. It seems like every spice I try, regardless of if it is complex or as simple as garlic powder, it taste better than any of the other brands. Just pepper alone they probably have a dozen different flavor variations. We have over 80 spices in our pantry. Some of our go to are Frozen Pizza, it takes a Jack's frozen pizza to the next level. Others are Sandwich Sprinkle, Tuscan Sunset, Mural of Flavor and California Seasoned Pepper to name a few. I've been meaning to stop in here for the longest time. I love to cook and am a sucker for different spices. I finally made it in after I saw they had a sale. I placed my order online and the next day a friendly associate called to let me know it was ready, and provided me their hours. When I got to the shop, it's so nice inside. We had a lovely first visit here this past weekend to pick out a variety of spices using a generous gift card we received. The visit was long overdue and I'm surprised it took us so long to visit the spot just a few doors down from Trader Joe's. We appreciated that they had a little kids section that included coloring pages and crayons for the kids. Otherwise, this can feel like a hard experience to pull off with little kids in tow. We perused and smelled a variety of spices before making our final selections. All of the staff we encountered were very friendly and eager to help. Here are some of the items we ended up purchasing: Dutch Cocoa, hot chocolate, Mexican vanilla, Herbes de Provence and Ethiopian spice mix. Penzey's has world class quality spices from all around the world. Their spices are always fresh delivered to them from their original sources. The aroma in the store alone is an experience in itself. I've ordered spices from all over the globe until I found Penzeys. Now I get all my spices right here in Indiana. I make the trip located on the other side of town rather than have them delivered to my home was often as time allows, even consider considering their fine delivery service. Penzey's is a great, probably the best, source for Spices. It is definitely advantageous to get on their mailing list as they frequently have promos and freebies. I purchased a couple of Hug Blankets which are quite nice for gifts within the last couple of months. I placed my order for the blankets online and picked them up at the store the next day. I received an email last week reminding me of a promo for a free 1/2 spice of my choice and an Embrace Love pin - FREE - no purchase necessary. I selected Vietnamese Cinnamon. I believe they had about five different types of Cinnamons to choose from with a great description of each to assist in choosing the perfect one. The regular price was $9.49. If you are into spices as much as me and my family you will love this place. They have all the spices you could think of from A-Z. The store is very well laid out so it doesn't feel overwhelming (thats a thing for me, I hate disorganized stores), and the staff is helpful but doesn't hound you. They have various sizes for the different spices so for some I get smaller but for things I use often I tend to use the larger sizes. Another thing I like is they often have specials where if you spend a certain dollar amount you can get something for a very reduced price or even free. When I went in this week if you spend $10 you got a free large spice of your choice! That was very unexpected and I was thrilled. read more

I received some spice samples for Christmas. Unfortunately, several of the packages had awful messages that are absolutely hateful. I understand you hate republicans but lumping us all together and making us all out to be vile is wrong and disgusting. The store itself has soooo much stuff! The spice/seasoning options are nicely laid out and it makes it easy to find things. Lots of sniffing opportunities to see if you like thins. Love Penney's! The spices are just better than what you get at the grocery store. The staff is always friendly and helpful The store often has samples out to taste so you know what you are getting. During the COVID shutdown I was able to order and pay but phone and pick up my spices at an arranged time, no contact no fuss. The roasted garlic powder has become something we don't live without! Hard to find spices are here or spices you may be hard pressed to find in regular grocery stores due to shipping, inventory or manufacturing delays that we have witnessed for the last 2 years since COVID-19 hit. They were operating via curbside pick up only, but has or will offer in store shopping if not this weekend, very soon. You can place an order online or by phone which is convenient. Plenty of parking is available in the strip mall so no parking lot bingo is required. Pricing may be a little more expensive than a regular grocery store but once again they carry items not found in your regular grocery store. The store employee was nice that I spoke with and described the selections that I wanted to purchase really well which can be hard to do over the phone. read more

You gotta love a place that has every dang spice you ever wanted, ready and in stock. I highly recommend this even for folks who don't know what they are doing spice-wise, because there are a ton of already prepared spice blends/mixes available. Just ask the folks there. They can point you in the right direction and before you know it, you'll be hailed as a master chef for you flavorful dishes. They also have recipes to help you along. These are available on printed cards and online. You can find them in the store right next to the spice it is using. And if you are new to a spice or blend, they often have tiny sample pouches or even get the little spice containers, the prices are so reasonable for those. Or do as I do and just take advantage of their specials. Often times you can get a free item, or check out a few for a dollar or two. You can even order ahead and just pick up in store. Penzey's is taking over my spice cabinet, bottle by bottle of delicious freshness. I was skeptical at first that a store that only sold spices would make it. And why would I even make the drive across town to buy spices at top prices? Well, because the spices are incredibly flavorful and fresh. It's just that simple. When you enter the store the spices are arranged in alphabetical order. They also have specialty blends such as crab boil, salsa blend and rubs. The spices are not cheap but they run specials almost every week if you sign up for their mailing list. This week dry minced garlic was only $1 a 1/4 cup bottle and chili powder was $4 for 1/2 cup and then you received free a French blend for a $5 purchase. The garlic is a must-try with so much flavor and eliminates the need to mince it yourself. I also use the meat rubs and salsa blend a lot. The staff is helpful and will answer questions. The store is located in a strip mall with plenty of parking. There is an area for kids to color while you shop. read more

Went to the store to purchase spices for Christmas and was immediately helped by a store employee and found my spices easily. At checkout the lady asked if I would like a free box of spices, I said sure. When I got home and read the letter accompanied the spices, I realized it was nothing more than cheap political leftist propaganda by the Penzey's owner. They have permanently lost a costumer . They should have been at least honest about their " gift ". This was offensive! They obviously don't want me in their store. One star! read more

Such a neat place with amazing, quality spices! I don't think I will ever buy a grocery store spice product ever after trying Penzey's. Do yourself a favor and purchase a few things from Penzey's to start then slowly add to your collection over time until you have a full spice cabinet. Your recipes will thank you! The store is organized into a variety of sections like baking, salt, or curry spices, but there is also a large section of A-Z spices. Still can't find what you're looking for? Just ask the cashier and they will point you in the right direction. Some of my favorites are Sandwich Sprinkle (try it on grilled cheese!), their Cocoa (super rich dark chocolate yum), their Cinnamon, Chip and Dip Mix, and Northwoods seasoning (goes great on green beans!). Really everything they sell is great. I had a hard time narrowing down that list... Yes, they are more expensive than spices you can buy at the grocery store, but the quality is always there. You will not be disappointed. In addition, most of their spices come in a variety of sizes so you can save some money by purchasing the smallest size which will still last you a long time. They also often have deals for free spices when you sign up and get their emails. Just warning you though- their emails are very...liberal. You'll see what I mean if you sign up. So overall, this is the best place to get your spices (they also sell gift boxes!) and I promise after you try a few you will be a Pensey's cook and user for life. read more

I can't really say how the store is inside, but it seems like instead of taking safety precautions, they have decided not to open during the Pandemic. There were several orders sitting outside for pickup (the doors were locked), so that must be the way to go if you would like to purchase something here. It's their business, so it's their business, but just a heads-up to anyone planning to go out of the way to drop into Penzey's right now. I'll update if I notice they are open in the near future. Plenty of spices to choose from and helpful staff. . This was my 1st time at the Castleton location and I will plan on going back again.

If you like to cook this place is a must. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and service focused. If you sign up for their newsletter they often send out coupons for small free items. We usually opt for the smaller containers of spices that we don't use as much so they stay fresh but we buy our main spices in bulk. The store is devided by categories. herbs, spices, peppers etc. They also have a wide selection of salts and pepper. Our favorite is the gray sea salt. It's flavor is incredible. We use it both to cook with and as a finishing salt. For the aspiring wine nerd it's very helpful to go there and just smell the spices one at a time. They usually have a large jar open for smelling. This trains your nose for blind identifying and helps you identify flavors and smells. read more

A cook's dream--a store full of spices, in you choice of receptacles: shakers, glass jars, or plastic bags. Glass jars offer each spice's helpful description, including pairing suggestions and even a bit of history sometimes. There are gift boxes, too, whose steep price tags remind us of spice's status as a luxury good in the Middle Ages. Is this place ever open? Can someone prove to me that it is ever open?!? I have tried four different times in the past six months to come over here and they're always closed. Voting day, cat 's birthdays, we're on COVID vacation day, and any damn day that they don't want to be open they're not open. I haven't yet been in the store so I can't write about that but right now I have to say as the only Penzeys in Indianapolis their hours stink. They close at 6 pm?!? A lot more of us are cooking right now and we don't want to be charged a fortune for shipping for a couple of little bottles. Cool shop for spices and seasonings, well organized for browsing. They always have what I'm looking for, and their spices taste super fresh. I especially enjoy their blends that are designed for everything from salads and sandwiches, to rubs, to popcorn seasoning. Everything comes in a variety of sizes, so you can try a smaller portion rather than committing to a whole bottle. And the staff is friendly and helpful. I have loved Penzeys but VERY disappointed in this location. They are closed to in-store shopping but do have curbside pickup. Signs say to order online or call them to place an order. The website says they are out of stock on bulk items and I wanted to see if they would offer smaller packages to make the same size and discount them. They DO NOT answer the phone! Says to leave a message and they'll call you back. I was in the parking lot!!! Not very customer friendly! Good products. Good prices. BAD service. read more
