The bakery and food court area look nice, but were packed on a Saturday afternoon. The packaged goods are pretty much identical to the other location which is fine since I like that location too and was able to find everything I needed. All the locations are good places to find any ingredient that isn't available at general grocery stores. I always spend an hour or more wandering the aisles here and end up with far more in my cart than planned. Some staples like tahini are also much less expensive here too. I think I'll stick with the shorter drive for regular needs, but will come back here to,check out the bakery, etc when less busy.

This is an African/Caribbean type grocery store. The owners are from Ghana. They have…read morecanned/dried goods, fresh produce, frozen meat/produce, plus some sundries. My favorite things to buy here are: 1. Jamaican ginger ale (non-alcoholic). Has a real gingery bite. American ginger ale will seem weak by comparison after trying this. 2. Plantains, very green, for slicing and deep-frying into chips. 3. Palm oil. This is a "bad" oil high in saturated fat, but I use it in moderation. One, for "seasoning" cast-iron skillets (instead of Crisco). And two, just a teaspoon added to "good oil" when cooking popcorn. (I cook regular non-microwave popcorn in a wok, using 2 tablespoons + 1 teaspoon of peanut oil or corn oil, plus 1 teaspoon of palm oil, plus 1/2 cup of popcorn kernals.) The palm oil gives it a movie-theater flavor and a little tint of orange. 4. Canned powdered (dry) whole milk. Most powdered milk you buy at American groceries is non-fat. This has all the cream. I don't like to buy fresh milk, because I don't drink much. So I keep this around for baking. Watch the expiration date, because it doesn't keep as long as non-fat milk, but it's still usually good for at least a year. 5. Various flours, like yam flour, cocoyam flour, plantain flour, rice flour, and corn starch. 6. Exotic bar soaps. They have various imported soap, some medicated some very fragrant.

The fresh flowers are fragrant when you enter the store. They make these mini ice cream cones that are covered in chocolate and taste divine. They are small and the perfect size for me. I like the coffee flavored ones, but they have other flavors more suitable for kids. Today, I also picked up a highly rated Cabernet Sauvignon for cheap. I also like their pizza dough and frozen Asian meals for a quick dinner. This store has a bit wider aisles because the store is always busy. They have plenty of people stocking shelves and checking out. The staff is always friendly. I have to harp on the parking. The parking spaces are too close together and there's high probability someone's going to bang your door. The traffic pattern is wonky and dangerous for pedestrians.

I didn't originally visit K-Kitchen to get Spam musubi, though. I've recently been obsessed with kimbap. I've eaten it for dinner two days in a row! I saw that K-Kitchen has grab-and-go kimbap, so I moseyed over to grab three rolls (and that musubi) for my family's dinner. My kids didn't really care for the kimbap, even after telling them it was a lot like sushi, which they love. But who cares what they thought: I loved the kimbap! I got two beef kimbap and gimbap, which was crab and egg. My favorite was beef, though -- it's marinated, and with that and the pickled vegetables all wrapped in rice and nori, it was delicious. I don't know if you're supposed to, but I popped my rolls in the microwave for a few seconds, just to take the cold edge off. In my opinion, kimbap tastes better at room temperature. The seafood area is either "fresh" or "bleak," depending on how you look at it. Viet Hua is located in a big shopping center in Castleton.
