I normally don't shop here. But they had a good sale so I dropped by to pick up some items. I was very impressed with their service. A young man helped me out from start to finish. What great service. BTW I also do like their new 'pay at the store' feature for online orders. I was extremely distraught after have a blown out tire in the middle of Starke and driving 30 miles on the unreliable donut. These tires were bought from a Jacksonville location in 2006, un-beknownst to me that they were 2002 tires. Jaded by people in the past, I went to several tire centers to do some research. First the jerk from Sam's club lied to me and tried to sell me 4 tires by trying to tell me whomever put the tires on my car put in the wrong set in the first place and it was very dangerous to drive. Yea, he did scare me until I went to another tire center and they said no, it's not the wrong tires, it's because they're OLD TIRES. Finally, I went to this Pep Boy's location armed with ammunition to fight back in case they wouldn't give me my new tire. The staff was friendly although I had to wait about 40 minutes for them to look at my car which upset me a bit. Then, the rep told me that these are NOT Pep Boy's tires, they're actually general tires and that they WILL not be issuing me a new tire. I WAS INFURIATED. I called my dad and luckily my dad saved the invoice and even after trying for an hour to talk to the Pep Boy's location in Jacksonville, they refused to replace my tire. This is when this Gainesville Pep Boys location shined. The manager, whose name I can't recall now, told me he trusts me and is going to go ahead and give me a new tire. He gave me one of their brands tire. He pro-rated the wear of the tire in my favor, by rounding down and he gave me a customer discount card. GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE! Horrible customer service. They told me that they could do a tire change in an hour if I could wait. Waited one hour and a half no service yet was told it was a shift change, others with appointments were coming in, someone was on lunch break, etc.... During this time in the garage workers were laughing about customers, making rude comments and discussing who was or wasn't getting worked on. This isn't a first time to Pep Boys in Gainesville and service was never like this at this location or the others that I have been to. I was in town for training and my car broke down one evening after class. The tow truck ended up recommending Pep Boys due to their late hours. I was beyond impressed and was treated so well. They understood how unfamiliar I was with the area and knew that getting my vehicle fixed was so important to the success of my week. I was offered something to drink and received the most personable, professional service which helped calm me down after such a stressful day! Not only did they pull the engine codes for free, but the mechanic explained what all of them meant and advised me on the best plan of action. I would absolutely absolutely never take my car here again. My husband just went there and it took three hours to change four tires which should've taken less than an hour. Two of their other guys had finished two cars after they started a half hour after the guy doing our car, and nobody offered to step in and help, or even give us as little as a coupon for anything. I understand if the guy was new, but the fact that we made an appointment they should've stepped in and made sure that it got finished in a timely fashion. They didn't give us any compensation or deal because of the fact that we waited for three hours and we had an appointment. If it was possible to give negative stars I would. Horrible horrible horrible. I took my car there to have my brakes repaired and they put the calipers on backwards. Yes hard to do but they did it. Of course this meant I went from having bad brakes to NO brakes and some how they didn't notice this when they tested them or when they drove my car out of the bays and around the store into a parking space. They then proceeded to try to blame me and then the manufacturer of the calipers (because they must have been put in the box wrong). 2 hours later they finally managed to fix the problem. read more

I didn't want to take my car here but all I thought I was getting was an oil change. I have a 2003 stick VW Beetle and I've rarely had any problems with it. Well they called me and told me I needed a new air filter which I figured was true since I hadn't gotten one in a long time. My step father took it in and got me new brake pads too, which was very nice of him. Before I go on, let me say that I have had some problems with my coolant. I knew it had to have a slow leak because I was putting water in it every few months. I know I'm supposed to use coolant but I'm a college student and its cheaper and my car hasn't ever had a problem with it. I haven't had coolant added to it for over a year, just water. Now, the next day I drove 5 miles. After about 5 minutes of sitting with the engine on and air blowing, my air went hot within 5 seconds. I turned my car off and opened my good to find something smoking (I don't know what to call it) and I opened my coolant lid. It immediately sizzled then bubbled over. It was boiling. Not only that, but it was actual coolant. As I said, I only put water in it. This was really strange seeing as I just had it in the shop and when I called they said they never touched my coolant. Well then why was it green and not clear like THE WATER I'VE BEEN PUTTING IN IT? They kept sticking with the story that they did not touch it. Apparently something was leaking. They put a hole in it, I know for a fact, I couldn't just drive that far and all of a sudden something else is wrong with my car. That is all. If you want to have your car fixed, go to a smaller non corporation. You'll be much happier, and save money. read more

I was in an accident late in the afternoon this past Sunday, and unfortunately had to get my car towed from the highway to this Pep Boys. They were closing in 5 minutes so they didn't have enough time to take a full look at my car, which I understood. They offered to keep the car there overnight and look at it in the morning, but it turned out that things seemed to have 'fixed themselves' and my car was actually running before they closed. I was getting ready to check my oil level and radiator when I made the mistake of leaving my keys on the front seat with my dog in the car. She accidentally stepped on the keys and locked herself in the car. I was a bit panicked and so I went and asked the remaining workers there for some assistance, even though they were closing up. Two of the mechanics came out to help me and we ended up using a wire coat hanger to unlock the car. It took 45 minutes!! But they were super polite and light-hearted throughout the entire process, even though I kept them there way after they were supposed to be off. I tried to get the police to help but they said they didn't carry those tools anymore, so I really would have been stranded without the help of the mechanics. When we got the car unlocked they even did a surface-level check of the underside of the car, as well as under the hood, to make sure my accident didn't cause serious damage. I could not be happier with how the helped me on my unlucky day! read more

I couldn't remember (my car is a 4 cylndr) he rolled his eyes and acted frustrated. I get it, another dumb chick that doesn't know cars. He didn't offer to come look or help. I couldn't get my hood to open and I know they saw me struggling. I then decided to leave Bc I didn't want to give them my money. Worst experience ever. My niece took her car here as the check engine light was on and there was a belt squeal. She had just had work done on her a/c a month before this problem. After spending $2100 plus dollars for repair (that we now have doubt were ever needed) and picking up the car. She drives a few miles and then check engine light was back on. This was on a Saturday afternoon so Sunday morning they have her drive back and tell her there will be another $400 plus for a pcv tube they didn't replace. Needless to say we didn't let them touch the car. Please don't let your child take their car to this location. People were very cordial but the actual work was less than acceptable and we just feel like we were taken for a ride. You have to trust people to do the right thing if you aren't a mechanic and shame on us for trusting this location to take care of her. Would give a zero rating if possible. read more

My son took my older Mercedes to college in Gainesville. I made an apt. For oil change rotation of tires and to check all the fluids that cones with their oil changes. The car started making a noise when turned on after it sat overnight. We took it to auto ER and what do you know, the power steering fluid was extremely low. So much for checking the fluids....no single mom or anyone should trust this location!!!! read more

My father's car was having issues with his engine and had his car towed to this location an hour before the shop was supposed to close. The staff worked past closing time to fix his car so my father wouldn't have to spend the night at a hotel. After our brakes locked up, we had our sub towed here, while camping in the area. Initially they told us they just had to replace a rotor (which they had to drive to Ocala to get). No biggie. They told us they should have it back to is no later than noon (maybe earlier). Great! Not. We got there at noon any they told us it could be 10 minutes to a half hour longer. Alright. After waiting another 45 minutes we asked what's going on and they told us everyone had gone on their lunch break! Really?!? Two hours later, we're watching the mechanics talk in the parking lot instead of working. They did try to make things right by charging less than they should have, but the experience was still very frustrating. read more

I guess they've changed owners. Apparently tried to scam me. Went for clutch issues. Was told my clutch master cylinder was bad and that they couldn't test the clutch unless they fixed that. $640 with the potential for much more. Different mechanic says they'll do the same job for around 300 so I pay my tow and diagnostic fees to Pep and take it to the other place. Once it's there? Clutch master cylinder is fine. Clutch is bad. They were going to charge me for the unneeded clutch master cylinder and then tack on at least another 1k for the clutch. On top of this, staff was generally rude and even though all they did was a diagnostic, my emergency brake light was stuck on when I left no matter what position it was in. Nice try, guys. It's places like this that give mechanics a bad name. read more

Dear God, where do I begin? Friday night, I pull in needing a radiator fan and two fan relays for my vehicle. The store manager (in title only, not in aptitude), Cesar, tells me he will need to order it. Ok, fair enough. It's coming from the Ocala store and will be here Saturday by 1230. Fantastic. I pay the charge and leave. I have now rearranged my day to accommodate a 1230 part pickup and an approximately 45 minute repair. By 1345, I've not heard from anyone at the store. I call and speak with Cesar. He said he was, "...just about to call me.." Seems legit. He says the FedEx truck has not yet come with the fan, but one of the relays came in. It should be here by 1500. I'm a little irritated, but, I guess. At about 1440, Cesar calls and says it's still not going to be here by 1500. Also, the other store did not have the 2nd relay. They thought they did, but they did not. Further, the store in Ocala forgot to put the fan on the truck. They FORGOT! They F****NG FORGOT! It will be here by 1600. Now, I'm actively ill about this. I jump in Cesar's stuff about not being honest and not being customer-oriented. At just after 1600, he calls to tell me the fan is still not here. He said he sent someone to "personally" pick up the fan from the store in Ocala at 1500 (as opposed to impersonally, I guess), but he's not back yet. I said, "So you had someone leave your store AT 1500 to drive to Ocala, and thought they would be back by 1600?" He said I needed to be reasonable. He finally calls me at just before 1700 to tell me the fan is in the store. I go up to the store. He puts the fan on the counter and opens the box for the relay to show me the relay. I said this is not the relay. He assured me it was. I said, "It absolutely is not. Sit tight." I slam the relay he offers me on the counter and walk out to my vehicle. I retrieve the correct relay and go back in. I show him mine versus his and asked, "How do these even remotely look the same?" Some jerkass tire changer is standing beside him and says, "You can't go by looks.", to which I replied, "You most certainly can." I flip the relays over and show the physical differences in the parts that render his offering incompatible with my vehicle (4 prongs on mine versus the 5 on his). The tire changer, not to be outdone declares, "We don't go by looks, we go by part number". I flipped the relays over again and ask him to show me any string of numbers which are similar, let alone that match. He furrows his brow in pontification of my intellectually exhaustive riddle. I'm certain he was contemplating the meaning of the words "string" or "similar" or maybe "number". After a few eternal seconds of concentration, he is mentally spent and retreats to the land of rubber and alignment. I ask for the number of the Area Manager and get the standard, "Call 1-800-Pep Boys". If the level of customer service I received is any indication of their business model, I'm certain they won't be of much assistance, either. The store manager, Cesar, is clearly uncertain as to how he can rectify the situation. I'm angry, and he is an imbecile. He finally refunds the entire purchase price of all the parts in abject silence. I indignantly leave the store and return home. As I post this, I wonder if the fan itself is even the correct part. At least it was free. TL;DR-- Don't shop at the Pep Boys in Gainesville. Their manager is inept, their tire changer thinks he is an electrical engineer, and you will be largely disappointed. Go to AutoZone or order the part from Amazon and wait an extra day. It will be worth your sanity. One star because zero isn't an option and at least I got it for free. read more

If I could give them no stars I would. They changed the oil in my car. Suddenly my car is running bad. I bring it back and suddenly I have oil leaks I didn't have before. They claimed pepboys wasn't responsible. My husband told them that the so called oil they saw was transmission oil. They wanted to charge me for more services that I never needed before. The even had to add oil that they didn't so I'm pissed and done. They ruined my car. read more

The prices are a little steep (only thing keeping this review from 5 stars), though the service is way above and beyond what's expected. I went in for a simple oil & filter change and when I got home, found my oil dipstick laying right over my engine. About a half quart of oil splattered out the dipstick tube all over the place. Some pretty lousy service. Never again. read more

What they tried to do was criminal. On our way to Daytona we were hearing brake noise. Stopped off to get it serviced here. Quoted us like 1000$ for front rotors, and back brakes. Also said they couldn't let us leave if we didn't replace two of our tires. Which they claim for all four tires and the brake service would be just over 3000$. Well now my g/f is crying, I'm afraid we can't even go on vacation anymore.So i have to give you 3000$ to get my car back? No thanks, I'll pay the diagnostics fee, call AAA, have it towed the rest of the way to Daytona; I'm sure I can find a shop not ran by crooks. We found a great shop (ABC Brake and Auto Repair if you are curious, he fixed our brakes and rotors for 239.41$. Also he told us, and I confirmed once we got back home, they were lying about my tires). To sum it up, these criminals tried to exploit us for what limited resources we had because we are states away from home. Don't go here, or they may try to shake you down like me and my g/f were. read more

On June 8 at around 5 pm my wife call me saying that a noise was coming out of our van and she was on the northbound ramp of I-75 at Archer road. I went to her and determined that the serpentine belt was coming apart. Wife and I drove home to Alachua (about 15 miles) to get our trailer to go back and haul the van home. It was then that my wife asked if I still had that towing club thing (Good Sam roadside assistance). I said why yes I did and called the 800 number and talked with Eric who was very nice and set up for Elite towing service to meet us at the van and also gave us a number to give to Pep-boys (one exit up or about 5 miles) for a 10% discount (0167895) on the work. I agreed that would be a lot easier for me so my wife and I met the driver at the van and signed for the tow and then went on to Pep boys to wait for the van. It was very busy at the store and by the time someone waited on us (about 15 minutes) the van had been dropped off and the driver left. We never spoke to him to even say thank you. The counter person (Roberto) told us it would be around $98 for the new belt and wrote up an estimate that I signed. I told him about the discount number and he wrote it on this ticket. He said that they were really busy so we said that we could come back Saturday morning. Roberto said they would get on it first thing and call us when it was done and we went home. Saturday morning around ten we hadn't heard anything yet so I called and was told that they hadn't started on it yet but would have it by noon and would call. He also asked if I had some club card and when I said no, he stated that he would sign me up for one and that would give me another 20% discount. At around 1:30 I got a call that it was done but by then the wife and I were doing something else so we didn't get to Pep boys until around 3:30. A young lady started to ring us up and said the bill was (and at this point the number was so high and gave me such a shock that I can't even remember the exact number) around $140 or so. I said that couldn't be right so we started to go over it. It had the belt and labor that I expected that was $86 ($19.99-belt, $66.50-labor) but it also had a $20 to $40 charge for towing and a $10.?? (almost $11) charge for a shop fee. Needless to say I expressed that that couldn't be right. At this point another person (sorry, I never did get his name but the cashier number on the receipt is 357262 I think) took over and I explained that I had used a towing service and wasn't to be billed anything at which point he got on the phone with the towing company for about 10 minutes and then asked for my towing service card and called Good Sam and talked with someone for about another 15 minutes and then said that there must be some mix-up and took the charge off. I then explained that no one had said anything about a shop fee charge and after some more tap dancing and discussion with Roberto he indicated that the shop charge was included in the labor estimate and that the total with tax was what the estimate was ($98.99). By this point I had given up on the 10% discount and the club card that was first put out on the counter was quietly retracted and put back on the pile with the others. It is fair to say that I was getting fairly upset and just paid the $98.99 just to get out of their. I had heard some bad stories about this place but thought that this was such a simple straight forward repair, what could go wrong. I really don't like it when places put on "trumped up" charges just to see if you are paying attention and playing the "pea under the paper cup" game until you are so frustrated that you just want to get out of there. read more

I went to Pep Boys to have my Mini Cooper's front right wheel bearing fixed just a few days before having to make a 5-6 hour drive. Being the car that it is, the part I was looking for turned out to be very hard to find. I was brought back multiple times due to this. Luckily, the customer service at this particular Pep Boys overshadowed what could've been a great inconvenience. In particular the manager, David, customer representative, Josh, and mechanic, Sean, made my experience that much better. David was very understanding throughout, sat down with me and helped me even when it turned out that my car's part was actually much more expensive than expected. Josh, on the other hand, went above and beyond to contact various stores and warehouses to successfully get my part in before I was to leave for my trip. While Sean personally explained the situation and what it meant to the workings of my car. Overall, I was very impressed with the outstanding service that all these individuals provided and due to this will probably visit Pep Boys before any other if my car needs service in the future. read more

I had an online appointment at 8 am 12/14/2017 -Store 127 Gainesville FL I arrived 10 minutes early and the person of the counter Christina Robinson told me that 2 other customers are ahead of me. I objected since I had my first app of 8am and no other app were possible to be scheduled earlier than 8am. She said that I should wait as she waited when she was at the doctor office? Rude and unrelated with present issue. Only ONE mechanic was available for all shop for 10 garage doors/work stations ? Waste of resources. Meanwhile 3 receptionists were killing time -playing loud music, dancing, playing computer games and having private conversations across the store. I witnessed a number of customers coming and leaving after they were informed of insufficient mechanics-Lost business due to mismanagement. The waiting room was dirty on the floor/chairs/tables/windows-Trash on the floor- food wraps/empty water bottles, several days old customer invoices /receipts with private information discarded . The Tv was on displaying static-even a cable box was attached to it. The water fountain in the store not working. I had to wait 2HOURS until the mechanic finally took my car. I explained him the problem I have with one of the upper front strut mounting seats-A round rubber part that was broken. Both struts and spring were ok. I know for sure that since 2 other independent garages identify the problem. The reason I choose Pepboy was the strut installation promotion 50%.= $45----That was not honored on the invoice -labor charged $289? He ignored me and wrote by hand? an estimate for replacement of both front/rear struts/springs. Service work order 2182016 Receptionist Christina Robinson struggled to read the mechanic hand writing for many minutes and made several mistakes on the invoice. I pointed to double charges of 2 different struts she tried to charge me and extra warranty that she did not disclosed to be optional . Over $1300 overcharged !! The numbers on the invoice shows $515 for package subtotal but parts total $563??-After my objections she reduced the bill to $979 Al other stores estimate was under $150 with no labor/installation discount! I am amazed how this store can survive with such incompetence, bad customer service, scamming customers? read more

Very good all around service, possibly the best experience I've had with a auto shop. Took my truck in to have an aftermarket exhaust system put in as well as new headlights and was out of there in a little more than 3 hours. Reasonable pricing on labor, sounds and looks great! read more

My husband, son, and I were heading home to Tampa from a UF game when our van broke down at 6:30 pm on a Saturday night. Michael Dempsey and mechanic Herb were wonderful to work with. When it looked like we were going to have to spend the night in Gainesville, Michael drove us to the nearest hotel. But Herb kept at it, going past closing time, to find out what was wrong and fix the problem. Michael came BACK to the hotel to get us, and by 9 pm we were heading home. Their dedication to helping us, especially past their normal work day, saved us a $200 hotel bill (homecoming weekend - every hotel was overpriced) and, more importantly allowed us to get home to our pets. read more

So I went in because my Cigarette lighter/12v charger outlet wasn't working. They Told me it would cost 24.99 for a diagnostic which i was fine with. Once they finished they told me everything was working. as soon as i get in the car I quickly realize the outlet is still not working. They assured me that they replaced the fuze which I payed for on top of the diagnostic. So they recheck and notice the fuse is blown again. So I buy another fuse and once the tech puts it in it blows and he tells me "Oh you must have a short somewhere and we don't even fix that." I asked if there was anywhere in town that does and he told me he had no idea. Thanks Pepboys so I spent 40 bucks for you guys to tell me you couldn't fix it. awesome. I have gone here for many years with three different vehicles. This will be my last visit. read more
