For the last three weeks, Pep Boys has been one of the worst customer-service experiences I have ever had. I purchased TWO batteries through Pep Boys. Neither solved the problem. I then spent money on a crankshaft issue. That didn't fix it either. My vehicle has since STOPPED DEAD ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD FIVE TIMES. I am disputing all applicable Pep Boys charges. It is my position that products sold to me were outside the manufacturer's date and/or ineffective for their represented purpose. I am preserving documentation of these transactions. And somehow, Pierre, their Area Manager, made this nightmare even worse. By the time my issue reached Pierre, I had spent money repeatedly and been left stranded. Instead of resolving it, PIERRE HUNG UP ON ME THREE SEPARATE TIMES. Pierre has been extraordinarily arrogant, dismissive and condescending. I cannot understand how someone who treats customers this way is an Area Manager. An Area Manager should resolve problems. Pierre became another one. I want Pep Boys corporate leadership to review Pierre's handling of this complaint and, if these calls were recorded, LISTEN TO THEM. Explain why an Area Manager hanging up three times on a paying customer who has repeatedly been stranded is acceptable. After three weeks, I'm left with two ineffective batteries, a crankshaft-related expense that solved nothing, FIVE roadside breakdowns, disputed charges, and an Area Manager who hung up on me THREE TIMES. Over a week ago, I requested an appointment because the A/C in my car went out. All seemed smooth when Raul (the manager) checked me in. He didn't say much but I was monitoring progress through a link they sent you. Around 5:30-6 pm that night I realized no one had called me to provide an estimate. When I called, they told me it wasn't even looked at and the A/C technician can't look at it until the next week. Raul didn't communicate any of this. Jose (the assistant manager) worked with me from that point providing solutions and working towards getting my car repair. Jose really was helpful, thoughtful, and solutions oriented. They ended up working with me to get my car to the Skokie location for the repair (will review that location separately). Jose kept me updated and followed through consistently. I believe this location can definitely be more stars but my experience didn't warrant that. Problem one is that if the only appointment system is not reliable or accurate for consumers, fix it or stop using it. Problem two is that Raul, the manager, didn't communicate any expectations despite knowing they didn't have a technician to do the work quickly. Problem three they had another employee call me with an estimate that was incorrect even though the machine to assess my A/C needed repair. I have been going to this Pep Boys in Portage Park for a couple of years now. I would say that the customer service especially Raul and Jose are very courteous and helpful. They always explain to me in detail what service I may need and never begin the work without contacting me and giving me a price beforehand. The service has been completed overall the time they have said, and if not they call me to let me know why it may take a little longer, and it's usually because the part that is needed is not at the shop, but they make every effort to get it there within a day. I get my oil change there regularly, and have had the brakes done and it's never been a problem. Plus when I need air in my tires they never hesitate to put air in my tires. read more

Raul went above and beyond (in my humble opinion) when I needed a flat patched/repaired recently. I had a gnarly puncture in my tread - and despite the tire being under warranty (aka, free fix at my dealership) - I needed a fix, fast. I made an 8:30 a.m. appointment but got there early and Raul immediately got to work. Not only did he repair my tire within 35 minutes, but he also deflated my spare and put everything - including the tools that come with my car - away where they are supposed to be. I did not expect this; I assumed my tire would be repaired and the spare thrown in the back with a goodbye wave of the hand. The time and money I saved by going to Pep Boys (and having Raul help me out,) was invaluable. Thank you, Raul!! (Oh. And the puncture? A 5" bolt with two gauged wires coming out from the bolt head. Do not come here The last time I come to this place. They took my battery, replaced it with a smaller one and denied they did anything to the car. First of all, I usually give great reviews or try anyway. but when the service us that poor then I also like to share. I visited on Sunday 21 2021 around 1230pm and Ralph at the front desk was working. My sister and mother bought a battery on the Elston Ave store and two weeks ago they brought it to this place since it is closer to their home. A guy by the name Roberto or something as such did not treat them kindly and said he would exchange the batter since it had the warranty but when I saw them this week I went with them back to the store and I know she bought a Champion battery with 625cc and they installed a Super Start Extreme with 340cc. So I when we got there Ralph said, without looking or knowing what we bought, said he would install what the manufacturer recommended. I told him Pep Boys sold us the previous batter that had the higher cc so he said just leave the car and he would change it. So I went home thinking he would do the right thing but when I called my mother later during the day, she said that Ralph did not change the battery , that the previous guy did not work there any longer and they wouldn't have given her the battery she had. So two weeks ago, they took the old battery and replaced it with a smaller one, did not give my mother a receipt and this time they said the guy does not work there any longer and refused to put back the old battery. I unfortunately do not live with my mother, she is over 70 years old and this place is the last place I would recommend. Save your money and try somewhere else. I understand that many business are adjusting certain things under the pretense of COVID-19. However, my issue is with the wait time here. I scheduled an appointment according to their Covid-19 procedures to have some wheels and tires mounted, balanced and aligned. It was for 2:30pm on Wednesday, December 23rd. I arrived early so they could sort out costs and everything like costs and what not (which I can say they are very fairly priced but don't seem to have a good organization system because they couldn't find some of the things that had been shipped to them for the install). I handed them my keys and decided to wait it out at the facility because the clerk said they'd get right on it. This was definitely untrue. I sat for a while and decided to go and do some shopping while I waited. I gave my number and told them to give me a call and I would rush right back over. I was gone for an hour and came back. My car was still sitting in the same spot I pulled into - with no work done. I think "that's odd" and continue to wait with no complaint. My vehicle didn't get pulled in to have work started on it until a little before 5pm. More then 2 hours after my "appointment" was scheduled. It would have been different if it just took them a long time with the work. But to have me schedule an appointment and not even start for over two hours after is just ridiculous. If they didn't have the time, I would have gladly taken another appointment spot. The prices are enticing and I had even considered getting my oil change done here. But after waiting that long, with an appointment, I do not plan on coming back. read more

The first mistake was purchasing a set of tires years ago with the option which costs extra for lifetime tire rotation. Try to get your tires rotated. They will want you to leave your car from 2-8 hours for something that takes 10 minutes. This is the worst of the worst. Dirty facilities, disorganized, with zero customer service. read more

This place will charge you for services that you won't receive. Be careful!!!!! Be careful getting regularly scheduled maintenance on your car done here. In February 2020, I came to this location for an oil change, new air filters, tire rotation, break fluid flush/change. I left thinking my car was up to date on maintenance, until this week. I went to another auto shop because it was closer to my apartment and while they were performing an oil change, they tested my break fluid and noticed it was really corroded. They checked the Car Fax report and it said I received a break fluid flush/change in February 2020. The guy at the shop was like, for only getting this done 10 months ago and for only putting 4,000 miles on your car since your last maintenance check, your break fluid should NOT look this corroded. He tested the fluid again and it still came back corroded. Giving this location the benefit of the doubt, I called to confirm I was charged. Maybe my Car Fax report had a mistake. But when the manager confirmed I was in fact charged for it, I was really upset. I've spent hundreds of dollars at Pep Boys the past couple years. This kind of service is unacceptable. After I received my oil change, I took my car back to this location where the manager tested my break fluid and he tried to convince me that my break fluid was changed. As you can see by the test attached to this review, it was not. This was the test strip from this location. I told the manager I don't trust anyone at your location working on my car and left. I tried calling customer service and wasn't able to get ahold of anyone. I requested a call back due to long wait times and never received a call. At this point, I just want my money back. read more

I was coming here to the Milwaukee Ave. Pep Boys for a few years but now looking for a mechanic that actually knows how to diagnose a car. All they know how to do here is read engine light codes. My car (2011 Crown Victoria) suddenly stopped accelerating over 20ish mph in D, I got to my appointment tonight by driving in 2nd gear.  But the engine light hasn't come on for this problem, so they refused service and sent me away.  The guy (Raoul?) told me to drive around in D until a light comes on or he couldn't do a thing.  I told him I felt unsafe and had already driven around like this in D plenty, and got back to Chicago from out of town in 2nd gear, and he basically shrugged his shoulders.  Tonight I did what he said and drove around in D, I got honked at for the slow speed while feeling unsafe.  It was pointless. Besides that: there was no point in even making an appointment, they don't read them whatsoever. They could have told me in advance I would be sent away. Got a flat tire on the way home from work. After a miserable experience with getting towed, I called ahead to let them know I was coming, even though I knew it would be close to the time they closed. I spoke with Raul, and he told me they would take care of it as soon as I got there. My car was finally dropped off at 6:30pm. I had thought I'd have to wait until the morning, but Raul and the tech said to hang around to see if they could fix it quickly. They did and even stayed late to do so. That is true customer service that you don't see nowadays, especially post Covid. I'm going to be honest, after first reading the reviews on here, I was very skeptical about the level of service I would receive. After leaving, I could not have made a better choice. Our car broke down in the evening and it would not start after running an errand. The lights and radio worked and we were unable to jump the car. We had the car towed to Pep Boys after they were closed. We put the car keys in the drop box in their envelope after filling out the envelope with detailed information. They called early in the morning to say they are looking at the car. I setup an appointment for a tire balance 48 hours in advance via the Pep Boys website. I come to the appointment, give the assistant manager named Ralph at the front desk my name/keys and tell him I'm here for a tire balance on my front two tires. I take a seat in the waiting area (which is in back, it's completely empty, and you can't see the parking lot or garage workers from it). A full hour passes, I get up and walk back to the front desk and ask the man, "Any updates?" he rudely replies "I have no idea." I give him a look that says 'Can you find out...' He tells me he's really busy doing something on the computer. I walk out to the parking lot and notice that my car hasn't moved. A few minutes pass and he gets off the computer and walks into the garage area and starts talking to a tech about another car. He comes back to the front desk and says, 'Yeah, they haven't even started on yours.' I tell him 'I've been here an hour and I had an appointment' He then defensively says, 'I communicated with you that we were delayed.' Which he didn't! I called out his BS, he got upset, and then I asked for my keys back. I will never return. read more

I tell him I have a ram 2500 he says OK. I tell him great I'll be in at 9:30. I take the day off work. I get there on time they tell me 11 o'clock pick up. I come back at 11 they tell me "oh that's what we're going to start it." At this point they tell me we're really busy we'll have it done by 4 o'clock. I had used this Pep Boys quite a while ago in the past....2009 to 2014 and I always had a good experience with them. I got my oil changed there and even had a radiator replaced. They were always honest and reasonably priced in my opinion. In 2014 I moved about 6 miles away but I went here because it was a Saturday and they were to only place with openings. My brake light came on just as I was getting ready to head out for 7 hour road trip. It turns out that one of my rear brakes was leaking brake fluid and the caliper needed to replaced. When the guy called me with the estimate I couldn't believe my ears....$900 and some change. I wound up getting my car and taking it to a mom & pop place down the street where they charged me $275 for one side only. The guy at Pep Boys tried to convince me that they had to repair both rear brakes. But as far as I know, that's optional. The only time you really need to do both brakes at the same time is when it's the front brakes. And even then, it should be no more than $500 or so. And when I picked up my car, not a word, just attitude, as he slid my key across the counter. This Pep Boys was descent with replacing my battery in previous years and also with giving me a tow. They are good for oil changes. But they will try to rip you off big time when it comes to brakes. read more

Went in for Lyft inspection. The inspection was very thorough with the technician pointing out some things I wasn't aware of. My plan was to get new tires in the spring. I bought my vehicle used from a woman who didn't drive much. Age wise they were five years old,but showing wear from dryness failure. Large cracks, inability to maintain air pressure. Alex Diaz , was very helpful in selecting suitable tires. Although it was late in the afternoon, the tires went on within an hour. Thank you very much! Ps. My tire had gone flat and I wasn't sure why. Pep Boys discovered it was an issue with the valve being loose, so they fixed that without having to replace the tire.
