I'm not sure if they thought I had a lot of money to waste because I was dressed in business casual but I'm no idiot and I wasn't born yesterday. Paul is the person that helped me directly. He is clearly overcharging people whenever he gets the chance to. I would avoid this place at all costs. This place is an absolute joke and needs to be shut down immediately. I made an advance appointment for an oil change and tire rotation and it still took me 20 minutes before I was checked in and paperwork signed. Meanwhile I waited. Then it took 5-10 minutes for them to bring the paperwork and keys to the garage. Meanwhile I waited. Then it took 15 minutes before my car was driven from the front of the building into the garage. Terrible customer service and inexperienced mechanics. A year ago, I came to this Pep Boys for a batter install. They installed it incorrectly, causing it to leak battery fluid (determined by a licensed Subaru mechanic at another shop). I received a new battery under their warranty and my own mechanic replaced it. Less than a year later, that battery failed. I went back to this same Pep Boys as it was under warranty. They confirmed that it was warranty and that I would not be charged over the phone when I made the appointment. When I arrived for the appointment, a mechanic confirmed once again that this would be covered under warranty. When the manager, Jose, called me to check out he told me that I owed just over $200. I let him know that this service was under warranty. He had to ask someone for assistance. He then told me that I owed $17 for installation. I read their contract to him which states that "Pep Boys will replace the part, at no charge to the customer." My invoice also states "30 month free replacement." Regardless of the contract and invoice, he insisted that I had to pay for the install. I paid and left because the price of the installation was not worth the headache of a continued back and forth with a manager who had absolutely no knowledge of the company's contract. Absolutely poor excuse for a business. I brought 4 tires to be mounted. They wrecked 1 of the rims and tires to the point it won't even hold air and also marred up one of the other rims. I have spoken to Jose the service manager and submitted pictures to corporate and Jose. It has now been over a month. Jose won't return my calls and is "never there". I have called at least 5 times to corporate and have been told a Field Manager will call me back ASAP. 3 weeks later, nobody has had the decency to reach back out to me. Pep Boys is a great place for picking up parts or for getting parts fixed. Over the years I've only ever had to come here to have a headlight or brake light replaced, but I always leave satisfied. Even when they didn't have what I was looking for, they were able to send me to a mechanic that was able to help me. The service dept. has always been helpful and treated me as an equal. I just hate it when a guy talks down to me, because he thinks that I don't know anything about cars. Sure, I could change the bulb on my own, but that's not happening with a 5 year old running circles around me! This location has a great waiting area with comfy seats, charging stations, coffee, snacks and a large tv. I have the unpleasant experience during my service visit with pepboys in Berlin CT, I have accompanied with my friend during this service visit and he also got annoyed based on this service visit. I came in for my vehicle - 2013 Chevy Malibu - check engine light issue, honestly we are not mechanic- we are consumers, I told to Pablo clearly I am planning to sell this car and I want this check engine light in the dashboard to get fixed, I got an estimate of 981.82$ to fix - I paid (have the proof of receipt) And while getting the vehicle delivery out on may20th evening at 5:20pm EST - I have requested mechanic to come over, take a look and test ride before delivering the vehicle out as I paid nearly 1000$ want to make sure everything works right, but Pablo did not accept my request and he mentioned mechanics already inspected and you are all set, ready and good to go.. Hence I took the vehicle delivery out and while on the way back to home - my Malibu check engine light came ON and the original issue which I reported during the service visit(ac off due to high engine temperature came back on in dashboard) that was my original issue and purpose for my visit to Berlin CT, pepboys. Went for service after my left-front (driver-side) tire had a small puncture. I was first told that they could not salvage my tire as there was a small nail found in my tire and due to my car being all-wheel drive that I needed to pay for all 4 tires which would have cost me $1,000. When I refused service and asked for other alternatives I was disrespected and mistreated by a pep boys servicemen who decided to talk under his breathe and tell me to get tf out. I simply left and went to Town Fair tire who removed the nail from my tire and patched the hole which cost me $13.24. Big difference then paying $1,000. Pep boys will scam you if you allow them too. Terrible place with incompetent employees I've made 8:30 am appointment for tires changeover. I've arrived a few minutes after 8 am. A lady helped me check in. I told her that I will be waiting for the car. I sat down and patiently waited. Around 9:10 am I went outside and I saw my car still parked where I left it. So I went back in and asked a gentleman who happened to be at the check in desk, why my car isn't being worked on 45 minutes after my appointment time. At first his nonchalant response was "I don't know what she promised you, but we have other cars to work on and when we've finished we'll get to your car." Then he said that my car was next with an "I couldn't care less" attitude mentioning that it would be "soon". I asked him what's the point of making an appointment if they were not going to honor it. He said again that he had other cars to work on and something about being short of staff. So I asked him why wouldn't someone tell me that they won't get to my car on time so I wouldn't have to waste my time and wait. I understand things happen. But the lack of common courtesy of telling someone that the business is running late on appointments on time is inexcusable. I could have gotten an Uber go home and run my errands. read more

PSA - do NOT go to Pep Boys for AC service (or any service). My wife spent HOURS there on April 14 (luckily they have wifi so she ould work while waiting) while they "diagnosed" the issue with our AC - and then after explaining that they put die in the lines, see no issue and it just needs a recharge, and since the van is large dual system it will be $300 - fine. More than she wanted to spend but if it fixes the problem and gives us AC then it is worth it. Friday April 15, driving to NJ the AC works. Saturday April 16, driving home from NJ there is NO AC. She took it back to Pep Boys Monday morning (the 18th) where they proceed to tell her that it will be $1500 to ACTUALLY fix the AC. That the $300 was just the first step in the process. That they did the "free AC" check and had no way of knowing there were leaks in the lines. She explained she needed to be refunded, that she will not pay $300 for one day of AC - that they were to have figured out the issue before refilling (why else was she there for hours after my scheduled appointment if they weren't actually diagnosing?!) . They say they can refund the charge for the diagnosis (note that they had JUST said that it was a free AC check minutes earlier). They say that this $300 is always explained to be the first step. That the dye test they did, etc. that is not definitive. That they are SURE she was told this. She reiterates everything that she was actually told - and they argue that she is wrong. That they ALWAYS say this. Implying that either she is dumb or lying. She left a message for their district manager - since this manager on site was nothing but disrespectful and dodgy. Since I bought some parts there previously (and it wasn't a tire) when I later returned to get a flat repaired it was no charge - what a great surprise. It is just amazing how many employees they have standing around doing nothing. Very attentive, friendly, ready, willing and of course available to help - but how can they afford a payroll like that? If you have gobs of time on your hands, or just really need somewhere to go and sit down for a long time, Pep Boys is the place for you! I bought a set of tires here In July of 2011. The tire change took an hour. Ok. Not knowing how to myself, or having the equipment to remove tires from my wheels and replace them with new ones, I accepted this as a normal amount of time necessary to get new tires. The set came with free rotations for the life of the tires, so every 10,000 miles or so I'll stop in and get an oil change and free tire rotation. (I change my oil more frequently than that, but limit tire rotation to every third oil change.) I'm normally only available to do these kinds of chores on the weekends which seems to be the worst time to go Pep Boys. The first time I went to have the tires rotated was a Saturday morning. I was told there would be a 45 minute wait. "No thank you" I said. The gentleman at the service desk suggested I make an appointment for the following morning. I did this, taking the earliest appointment they had available, 10AM. I dutifully went back the next morning at 10AM and was told there would be a 45 minute wait. "Jesus tap dancing etc etc.. ..mumble mumble expletive deleted on a salty cracker", I muttered to no one in particular. Being overdue for an oil change, I decided to bite the bullet and wait it out. Every bit of 45 minutes later my car was taken into the garage and put on a lift. What I saw next I could not explain. The hood was opened and multiple components from inside the engine bay were dismantled and removed. I watched the tires being rotated which took all of five minutes. I watched three or four technicians stand around my engine bay and engage in casual conversation. What were they discussing? The 2012 summer olympics? The best weapon combination to roll with in the Halo Reach multiplayer map, Ivory Tower? Darfur? About half-way through a year old copy of Motor Trend magazine, a technician came out to the waiting area with clipboard in hand. He ran through a laundry list of issues with my car and suggestions on what I should buy to rectify these issues. These included front brake pads which he claimed were worn down to bare metal. (upon inspection directly after my trip to pep boys, i confirmed that none of the pads on any of the 4 wheels showed any signs of wear whatsoever). Air and cabin filters, and, best of all, 4 new tires. 4 new tires? At the time, the ones I had on my car had 10,000 miles on them. The technician claimed there was uneven wear on the tread and I would experience road noise and vibration. What a joke. I looked at the guy and said "I came here for an oil change and tire rotation" and then just sort of stared at him. "So you don't want to do anything about these other things." I just continued to stare. Half an hour or so later I was out the door. Foolishly enough I did this one more time. There was no wait the second time, but it still took an hour and a half and I was still hassled to buy a bunch of crap I didn't want or need. Shame on me for that one. If for some reason you are forced to buy tires here or have any sort of routine maintenance performed on your car, please keep in mind there is no such thing as a free tire rotation. read more

I'm not the type to make complaints but I can't even believe the experience I had today. After waiting an hour and a half for a standard oil change I had an appointment for, I got into my car and after removing a dirty oil soaked rag from my seat, backed out of my spot to leave. After backing out of my spot, I went to drive out of the parking lot and a car started backing up directly at my car. I layed on the horn as hard as I could and the car did not stop and proceeded to back right into me and strike my driver's side door. The driver exited the car and it was one of the mechanics! He told me he "could not see me" and that it was "hard to see well." I told him I was on my horn the entire time and all he said was "oh." I went inside and the manager came out with an airpod in one ear and an "I don't care" attitude. He then started defending the mechanic! He said "well the window was tinted so it's hard to see." I told him I was on my horn the whole time and I got the same "oh" response from him as well. He started getting defensive again and said, "This doesn't happen very often, I'll tell him to be more careful." Luckily there was no damage on my car minus a small scratch and there was paint from the other car on mine. When he heard there was little to no damage on my car he said, "Okay, what is it you would like me to do then?" I can't even believe how little anyone cared about what happened. The only person who helped was the young lady at the front desk who told me she saw everything and immediately got the manager. If anything SHE deserves to be the manager. I paid over $100 for the service and was offered no discount or compensation. While I understand there was little to no damage to my car, it is still unacceptable. It is an auto repair center, at bare minimum I expect to not have my vehicle struck by the mechanics who work there! Take your money elsewhere. read more

If I could give Pep Boys on the Berlin Turnpike no stars, I would. My first visit there and I walked over to the service area just to have my tires air pressure checked. On one side of the counter was a busy older gentleman assisting a woman, and next to him were two young service workers talking amongst themselves while I stood there waiting for some type of acknowledgement. As I waited, they were looking at me and continued to talk to each other. Finally, one walked away and the other asked what I needed. He quickly said I would need an appointment, which I would have made if I felt it was a friendly environment. Didn't feel it, so left and went down the pike to Town Fair Tire. They gave me wonderful service and will get all of my SUV's tire replacement business now and in the future. Nothing ever showed that any of them were not in stock and the email stated a pick up date 2 days later and that an email would be sent when ready. That day arrived and still no email so I called the store and was told they had to get some parts from NY and they would be in that afternoon. Another day went by and no email. We waited past the weekend and called monday. Employee on the phone was very rude and said "I don't control the shipping" and continued to say it was coming in "this afternoon" It is now 10 days from when the order was placed and I talked to an employee today who said there had been a problem and would call me back. 6 hours later I had to call him back and still no resolution and no attempt to make things better. We prompted cancelled our order and will be going somewhere else from now on. "Notifications: Should we discover any issues with availability of an item(s) while processing your order, a Customer Relations Representative will contact you to discuss possible options. Pep Boys store #250 has given me the worst possible experience ever! 3 weekends ago I took my '05 Honda Accord to this store because the power steering was too tight while turning. During my initial visit I was told it is a serpentine belt and the power steering belt that needs replacement. I left my car over night on Saturday 3/1/14 so they can fix it. Sunday around 2pm I had still not heard back from them so I called the store & after being put on hold for 20 minutes someone finally told me that they've just been waiting for my verbal authorization so they can fix the car. At this point I told them go ahead and fix it. Around 5.30pm same Sunday (store closes at 6pm) I went to pickup the car as they had still not called me. I was told that they haven't fixed it yet because they're waiting on authorization from me. After talking to the store manager and explaining him that I had already authorized the work they apologized and told me they'll fix it in 30 minutes. I came back at 6pm to pickup my car and it was supposedly fixed! WRONG! Not only was it not fixed, but now they have charged me for it. So, I called the store manager Mike Garvey who then informed me to bring it back so they can look at it again. This is super inconvenient to me as I work Mon-Fri 9am - 6pm so I had to wait another weekend and drive my car with the hard steering wheel because they messed up. Another weekend rolls around and I bring it back to the "Boys" to get it fixed. Mike tells me they were wrong; it's not the belt but instead it is the power steering pump. I left it overnight so they can now fix the pump and Mike assured me that will fix the problem. I pick it back up on Sunday and guess what?!?!? Still NOT FIXED! Now, Mike tells me the pump they installed ended up being a defective pump and to bring it back so they can fix it AGAIN! This brings me to today "weekend #03" when I dropped it off Sunday Morning at 11am to get it fixed. I went back at 2pm and was told it's fixed. WRONG AGAIN! The car is still not fixed and another store manager Mike Vendetti tells me that now it's the entire power steering assembly that needs to be fixed which is a 4 hour project plus they don't have the part with them. So $129 later that I was charged for, not only is the work not done but I have to keep going to the place and leaving my car over so they can say they "worked on it" but nothing is getting fixed. I'm in the hospitality industry and this store has no level of customer service. They don't even apologize for their mistakes. I don't care if you're selling hot dogs or a car mechanic; if you're dealing with people then you're in the customer service industry. Unfortunately I have to continue going to this store as they already have my money and I want to make sure they fix what the originally charged me for. Can't wait to get my car fixed so I never have to use PEP BOYS again, EVER! read more

In 2013, I went to replace the windshield wiper motor for a 1997 Toyota Camry, my previous car. The windshield wiper motor for that model is listed at around $100. Somehow, the part and the installation of the part cost me $1200. This ridiculous price was the reason I never went to Pep Boys on the Berlin Turnpike again. I think the employees that work there are kind and good intentioned but the cost for this job was enough to turn away a longtime customer. read more

So the first couple times I came here they were fairly nice and moved somewhat quickly. The last two times, today included, were just horrendous. Today I came in for an oil change and it took OVER AN HOUR AND A HALF with a bloody appointment! Seriously?? The time before this I came in because my check engine light was on. I was informed that their master mechanic wouldn't be in until Wednesday (it was Friday) so they could read the code, but "legally" they couldn't tell me what the code meant. Wh...what?! Look. My father is an ASE certified mechanic and has been in the field longer than most of the guys at this shop have been alive and he informed me there is no law against informing me what the code relates to. I came here today (Memorial Day) to have a tire plugged after trying two tire places that were closed for the holiday. I showed the kid at the service desk a picture of the object in my tire, and he warned me that it was close to the edge so he'd put it in as a flat repair, but it may not actually be repairable. I was warned! He came back shortly after and said it couldn't be fixed. I said okay, well they will at least put air in it (indicator light was on) right? He said he'd tell them too and he'd get me a quote for a new tire as I requested. Quite a while later, he came back again and said they don't have the tire in stock nor could he even find it in the computer to see what it would cost. He said he could make some calls tomorrow (non-holiday) to get a price, but suggested I contact the dealer as the car is new (purchased in Jan '15) to make sure this isn't something that would be covered or to see if they actually have the tire in stock. He also said I could try another tire place up the road to see if they have the tire in stock. So, while I was glad they were open when the other places weren't, AND that they didn't try to sell me a different tire that didn't match the other 3, they never put the damn air in my tire! So, I left with the warning light still on and went to a gas station up the road and put air in it my damn self! It was below 20PSI and is recommended to be at 44. All they had to do was put the air in, while the car was back there anyway, and they wouldn't have only received two stars. Part of the turnpike was closed due to an accident and traffic was ridiculous, thanks a lot to the guy in the back that worked on it and felt okay sending me on my way with this tire being under-inflated. read more

I purchased $950 new tires from Pep Boys for my Volvo 36 months ago and put only 18k miles on them. Looks like when I dropped my car off at local valvolines, they never rotated my tires. They were bald on some read on both front tires. Mike the manager and Amir expertly walked me through my road hazard warranty and quickly got me the new tires and explained everything to me. Initially I went to he Hartford Pep Boys, but they were not willing to help me. I'm a loyal Pep Boys Berlin customer, and even splurged on new wiper blades and some accessories to keep my car in top shape. Bought a 1-year alignment with $20 off coupon Amir mentioned to me. Will be telling friends and family this is the best place to go. So grateful to find a safe, trustworthy place for me to go. TL;DR - Pep Boys screwed me by ensuring that credit cards would be the only transaction accepted. NEVER RETURNING and ensuring no one I know goes there. It started off as an okay enough situation for a crappy issue; my car battery light and esc light went off while I was driving and I had read that would most likely mean a new alternator. I called and asked if they would be able to see me and tell me what the problem was and they were quite helpful in arranging that. Unfortunately when I got there another light in my car had turned on and I was told that they wouldn't be able to see it until tomorrow because, I guess, they have a specific guy for that. Whatever, I totally understand and I was fine enough to leave my car there. The man who was helping me told me that to run diagnostics to find out what the problem is would run me 105 dollars. HOLY MOLY! My usual mechanic does that for free, but I thought this was an emergency situation and I accepted my fate. I was also told I couldn't pay for the diagnostic at that moment but I was told I would receive a call the next morning updating me on my car. True to their word I received the call and they confirmed that I needed my alternator replaced but they also mentioned the serpentine belt would need replacement as well as the shocks in the back of my car. Now, 100% I knew that they were just giving me a run for my money with the shock thing because I just wanted them to check the battery and things up at the front of the car, but, I figure eventually they're going to need replacement so why not just do it now. I ask how much it's going to cost and the guy starts sputtering and says, "well, you know the 80 dollars I was going to charge you for the diagnostic?" Um... no, I wrote down 105 dollars in my planner as soon as you said that so that I could update my budget accordingly, but I let him continue. "Well, now I'm going to give you a break and only charge you 40 for it." So, it was pretty much confirmed that they were giving me a run for my money and I was incredibly annoyed, but I'm letting it roll off of me because, to be honest, I didn't really expect anything less. The total cost for the car is going to be 862 dollars. I give him the go ahead and brace my bank account for what's coming later. When I arrive to pick up my car the man helping me pulls my order up and says it will be 826 dollars and I'm thinking that it's awesome that the earlier guy must've read the numbers wrong and I get to keep a few extra bucks in my account - but that's where the pleasant experience comes to a dead halt. I put my chip into the reader to pay and it comes up declined - I just transferred money into my account to prepare for this payment so I have more than enough. I try again and the same thing happens. But, thankfully the attendant had a very quick answer as to why this possibly was happening. He claimed that they may use a server out of state and my bank may be flagging that as fraudulent. Well, that's a load of crock because I travel all of the time around the states and I never alert my bank and I've never had an issue. So, his quick answer is flagging as suspicious. He suggests that I try my credit card instead. Now, I've been around the block and I understand that sometimes a company can keep a percentage of the profit on sales IF the customer uses their credit card. But, unfortunately, I just paid for my last semester of college and I have 300 dollars left on my card, so he suggests I split it between cards. So I try and it takes the 300 dollars on my credit card and then try my debit again and once again DECLINED. He saw my mounting frustration and pointed me in the direction of the nearest ATM and my mother and I literally ran across a busy turnpike during rush hour to get there. I was told that the transaction would remain active for a half hour and I could complete it when I got back. After getting the cash I was more than within the time limit and ready to get this over with. When I returned I was stalled and the transaction was expired. They told me I could use my credit card again, but unfortunately despite the expired transaction my bank had still put the 300 dollars on hold while they sorted it all out. Completely understandable as that's how I know credit cards to work. I wasn't going to max out my credit card despite them trying to tell me that it would be fine multiple times. I told them to hold my car for another night and I would return the next day with cash. That's when they had the "brilliant" idea that I apply for a Pep Boys credit card so that I could pay. I told them no - because I would never be returning and I didn't want to risk affecting my credit score because of some stupid card that I didn't need - and that they could just keep my car for another night. I called my bank the next day to find out why my card was declined and they assured me that it was due to Pep Boys system and NOT because of an out of state system. read more

Went in the other day looking for a struts for my Altima. Spoke with the parts manager Jeff who was very helpful and informative in helping me get the right part and making sure that I had everything necessary to get the job taken care of. All around the best experience from the moment I walked in. I was greeted with a firm handshake from a younger gentleman named Mike. After asking me what I had come in for he politely walked me to the brake line area and showed me everything I'd need to repair the rusted brake lines on my truck. His technical knowledge was extremely helpful and his familiarness with the store was extensive which seemed to be mirrored by his fellow (I was told service manager) who went by Mike as well. You can go anywhere for auto parts these days and they all really sell the same product but at this pep boys it's very obvious that it's the employees and managers that make the difference! I wouldn't recommend anyone but Pep Boys in Berlin to anyone seeking anything from parts, service, cleaning supplies, or even just questions or advice! read more

I visited this Pep Boys located on the Berlin Turnpike store #250. I have never experienced such poor service, nor have I ever been treated so disrespectfully. I went to purchase a bottle of fuel treatment. I grabbed the bottle and approached the register where Jeff was standing. I say hello and place the bottle on the counter. Jeff walked away to the opposite counter. Opened the register and told the customer behind me, that he could check out his items. The customer and myself told Jeff that I was next in line. Jeff then proceeded to tell the customer that I was on my phone so I lost my place in line. I told Jeff I didn't understand how me being on my phone made a difference in my placement in line. Jeff then says I was being inconsiderate by being on the phone. Jeff refused to check my items even with the customer behind me also telling him he was not next in line. I tried my best to let Jeff know my phone call didn't hinder me from hearing or knowing what was going on around me. He had plenty of time to simply check out my items so I could be on my way. Jeff simply denied me service. I asked to speak to a manager. He went on to tell me he was the manager and still would not check my items. When I asked to speak to his manager... he replied that he was the manager and would not provide me with any more assistance. I had to get the store number and complaint info from another associate. I have never been so disgusted. I was on the phone. I was not loud. I was not being inconsiderate in any way. This could have easily been avoided. Jeff went out of his way to deny me service. I was on my phone? That warranted me being denied service? This is who Pep Boys put in place to represent the company? I simply do not understand why I was treated so poorly. I feel like this entire situation may have been racially motivated. Jeff would not be reasoned with. I would not recommend this facility to anyone at all. If possible I would offer a zero-star review. Today I had an 8 am appointment to have my brakes inspected. I made the appointment online two days before. I arrived at the store at 7:35 am and was parked in front of the closed garage. Despite staff walking in no one directed me to park and come inside to check-in. After sitting there for several minutes I realized that I should go inside. I went inside and was checked-in by 7:45 am. I was checked in by Jose Perez the service department manager who told me that it would take 30-45m. I was the 3rd person in the store so I decided to wait for my vehicle. I sat in the waiting area for the next 2.5hrs. Many customers came and went. I went to the counter to inquire as to what was going on with my truck and then the abysmal customer service began. I was informed that the clerk had just gotten there and knew nothing about my vehicle. I went and looked in the parking lot and it was exactly where I parked it. When I approached the desk again he again reiterated he had just gotten there. I told him I just wanted my keys back and I would leave. He went into the back and came out with a mechanic who while apologetic explained to me that they were busy and short-staffed. He told me if I could wait for another 10minutes he would get my truck in and BEGIN the diagnostic. which potentially would take another 30-45m on top of that. I said give me my keys I am leaving I cannot wait over 3 hours for a scheduled appointment. I am currently awaiting a call from the district manager. I will update if a resolution is obtained. If they had told me it would have taken longer I wouldn't have waited but unfortunately, my window to get a ride had come and gone. I would choose anywhere else to get my work done! read more
