After 5 generations, Claro's now operates locations across Southern California. At the San Gabriel location, you can easily park across the side street in Claro's dedicated lot. The first room is dedicated to checkout, baked goods, and wine bottles. Further down, the back room triples a pantry, a refrigerator, and a deli. The chatter among staff and customers mostly drowns out the soft background of Italian tunes. The imported Italian grocery selection is excellent by LA standards, but don't sleep on Claro's made-to-order sandwiches. Grab a slip from the ticket dispenser and browse the well-stocked refrigerator section until a staff member shouts out your number. My fiancee and I love the Spicy Mike, which immediately hits your palate with a punch of flavor. The Great Grandpa Joe is solid as well, nostalgically recalling my memories of when Subway used to be good. The Large size sandwiches are the length of your forearm, and the sauce is perfectly proportioned to ensure that the sandwiches are neither dry nor soggy. My only critique is that I prefer a seeded roll to Claro's standard crisp-and-chewy Italian roll. Nonetheless, Claro's prove that a good Italian sandwich doesn't have to be overly complicated or gimmicky, and they set a good benchmark for what a hoagie should be. In contrast, Claro's Italian pastries were "fine" at best. The cookies were dry and muted in flavor, while the Cannoli Tart missed the satisfying crunch of a classic cannoli shell.
