This is the sign. Doesn't seem to be many other options than ordering online!

We have eaten here several times and had good results. This time not so much! At this restaurant, you seat yourself. So upon doing so & waiting 5 minutes without no server visiting us, we notice an order by phone sign in every table. We decided this must be the way it is done now. So after 2 of 3 of us finally get the app to work and our submitted (about 20 more minutes), a grouchy old lady showed up and barked " DID YOU ORDER ONLINE?!". And I replied well, we thought we had to because no one waited on us! She said she had been too busy...(6 other people eating here)...but no, you order from the "waitress". Needless to say not a pleasant visit. On top of this, she never came back after the food was served. Had to go up to the counter to get refills. The food. My "online" chopped steak came smothered in gravy, yet online didn't mention gravy and I am gluten intolerant, so, no gravy. The side was cottage cheese.... It was sour, I had to spit it up. And the fries tasted like crap. PISS POOR SERVICE, PISS POOR FOOD. I will never be back.

The most disturbing and disgusting small dinner. Our waitress actually went and grabbed one of the chicken strips in our daughter's basket for herself. Right in the front of the pickup window in our view. She was eating from this spot the entire time we were waiting for our food. Don't expect to be in sort of hurry. Very slow service and a lot of flies trying to eat your meal. Thought it was going to be a great stop on our way to KC for Lunch.

Crispy chicken salad at 10pm

Half decent food but nothing to write home about. Convenient 24 HR availability for weary road travelers. I asked for a crispy chicken salad. Maybe the patty would have been better? There were a couple wet fries in the salad. Just okay.

Great little dinner. Friendly and attentive staff. Had the penny's burger with a side order of onion rings. The hamburger beef is cooked typical flat fry grill style and paired well with the lettuce tomato onion and pickles. Fries were crispy and very lightly salted. The onion rings had a very nice crispy batter around the onion. We also had a side salad with ranch that was very good. We will be stopping again when visiting the DeSoto Bend Nature Preserve.

I live about an hour and 15min away from Penny's Diner. In between driving to and from Omaha or Lincoln, this is a great place to stop at. I've been about 3 times I believe. First trip I got the cheese burger and onion rings. Burger wasn't huge, but it was tasty. My onion rings could have been a little more time in the fryer. (I should have told our waitress that I wanted them SUPER crispy.) I was with my Mom and she and I had fun looking at all the old band posters and decorations; trying to guess who the singer was. They also only play music from the 50's - 60's. I LOVE that. And the building looks like a true old fashioned diner. Second time I got a club sandwich and it was great. I got fries that time and they were great. Used the bathroom on this trip. It's small and just has 2 stalls and 1 sink. (No diaper changing table.) Third time I ordered a chocolate malt. OMG it was one of the best malts I've ever had. I had that puppy gone in about 5 minutes. Wish I woulda taken a picture. I ordered the crispy chicken sandwich. It was good, but I wasn't wowed. And I knew the bacon they used was defrosted and not 'real' bacon. You typically seat yourself. They have about 8 booths and you can also sit at the 'bar.' (No alcohol, just really good ice cream.) They do to-go, but no delivery to the hotel it's next to. I thiiink they're open 24/7 or at least stays open till late. They have what looks like an amazing breakfast menu. It's served all day, but I wasn't in the mood for breakfast. Parking lot is shared with the hotel. Just going to see all the really cool decorations and feeling any nostalgia is recommended. Only one time did it take forever to get our food, but I think there was just 1 cook and 1 waitress. Next is a banana split.

Food so flavorless made me think I had Covid. Place was cute but I'd consider elsewhere.

Mel's Diner - Club Sandwich with tots

Mel's Diner

We often visit Mel's Diner in Fremont when we're servicing our cars, and it's always a fun little…read morestep back in time. Given the recent storms hitting the Fremont area nonstop, we figured we'd support this local mom-and-pop spot for lunch this weekend. We walked in and were quickly seated at a booth near the kitchen window and the lunch counter stools. The greeting was prompt, and drink orders were taken--iced tea and Coke Zero. Yep, this little diner is proudly a Coke Zero establishment. Classic! I usually get the club sandwich, but this time I took a moment to consider if I should branch out. But, I ended up sticking with my original choice. I went for the club with tots, crispy of course. My husband opted for the Big Bopper Burger and crinkle fries. While we waited for our food, we chatted, checked our phones, and had a little people-watching session. One memorable moment was watching a toddler trying to feed boogers to a teenager. Classic diner experience! I couldn't help but overhear the servers gossiping at the lunch counter while rolling silverware, occasionally letting out a few choice words. I'm not one to judge, but it is a business, and I can't help but wonder if that might bother other customers. On top of that, I overheard them questioning whether a to-go order looked right before boxing it up. Makes you wonder... After what felt like an eternity, our food finally arrived. My tots were supposed to be crispy, but they were more like soggy, sad little bites of disappointment. I could tell they'd been fried crispy and sat around too long. The club sandwich was good, as always, though I wish the toast had been a little crispier. I get it, though; that happens when a sandwich sits in the window for a bit. My husband didn't have complaints about his burger, but there was one odd thing. The fries on his plate were barely there. He had just a scattering of a few cold ones. The server then mentioned they were making him a fresh order of fries, which left me wondering: did he get leftover fries from a previous order, or whatever was left in the fry basket? It seemed a bit off. He said the fries on his plate were cold, so I guess the mystery of leftover fries remains unsolved. Unfortunately, this was the most disappointing meal we've ever had at Mel's. I'm not sure I'll be in a hurry to return next time I'm in the area. It's still a cute spot with a lot of potential, but it fell short this time.

I don't understand the 4-5 star ratings. I ordered a cheeseburger, figured that a Diner…read morecheeseburger would either be thick and juicy or smashed (my favorite).. It was neither, it was a dried out, pale, tasteless, frozen patty. I only ate it because I was starving. Then the waitress "accidently" brought a Coke instead of water, asked if I wanted it anyway so she didn't have to throw it out, so I took it. She said I would not be charged, I WAS charged. We got there are 11:15 a.m., not many customers inside, still took more than 30 minutes to receive our food. Too bad my husband didn't read our bill before paying, never again will I visit this place.

The tenderloin was massive. And the broccoli cheese soup was a star. Tried the peach pie as well which I thoroughly enjoyed. I fully expected the place to be packed as it appears to be pretty much the only show in town as far as a sit down restaurant. There was a please wait to be seated sign there as we walked in. We were greeted right away and seated in minutes. It's old school wood tables and chairs and I think there was a counter available. Ordering is done at the tables as well as settline your bill up with your server. Surprisingly the speed of service continued throughout the visit. After drinks we ordered the rodeo burger and fries, a tenderloin with chili cheese fries, and the garlic cheeseballs. The cheeseballs came with marinara and ranch. Fresh, hot, and fantastic! I've eaten a lot of tenderloins. Many that have been highlighted as Iowa Tenderloin Trail winners or participants... This is one of the better tenderloins I've had in the state! Obviously hand made, breaded, and fried. Not too thick and not too thin. Drained properly. Served with the essential condiments including the holy trinity (onions, dill pickles, and mustard). The gf liked her burger. It could have used more of the featured ranch and bbq sauce. The fries... Neither of us cared for them. Obviously hand made, but almost too thin and too greasy. We'd both opt for a different side next time. To each our own though. Almost every small town along this stretch of I-80 has a pub & grill. The menus vary a little, but are very similar in a lot of aspects. The quality of service and the cooks make the biggest differences. The Chuckwagon hit five stars in some aspects of both. Work on those fries and the flavor of the chili (horribly bland) and this review would have been five stars. I'm going to emphasize this again. Truly one of the best tenderloins I've had in the state! Keep doing what you are doing!
