Small town dinner, very dated decor but still very quaint. Our table was a bit sticky, but I think it was due to the years and years of use. Basic menu, and food that is comforting. Fair size portions at decent prices. The server was cold to us at first but she came around. Definitely a place that locals visit often. This place only takes cash but has an ATM on site. Well, where to begin... I moved to Blair two months ago and asked around for a 'breakfast place' and was told Billy's was about all the city had available. Now, I've been in here about 7-8 times during that period just to make sure my experiences were representative and consistent. So here goes. The place is fair, at best. On the good side, the prices are reasonable, the food SELECTION is decent, and it appears relatively clean. But I really don't have much else to say that makes me want to support this venue anymore. The coffee is very weak. Not sure what brand they use but it just isn't very good. A couple of drops of creamer turn it into a glass of milk so they are either 1) not putting a sufficient amount of coffee grounds in the filter or 2) it's just a poor brand. The food is hot but average in taste. Bacon, ok. Potatoes, ok. Pancakes, ok. Again, nothing to write home about. Where I have the most issue is the service? During the times I've been in, there are two waitresses/servers. The taller one is ok, the dark haired shorter one needs to find another job. This one wears a scowl most of the time. She comes by when she comes by and if you're lucky, you might get 1 refill (possibly 2) if business is slow. She doesn't say thanks, doesn't say hello, doesn't communicate well at all. Maybe she's the owner's relative or has been there too long but she either needs to find another place to work or reevaluate the role of a server. When I walk in, I always hope the other server is working. Billy's could use an updated decor. Some of the tables slant badly, benches are uncomfortable, chairs are dirty and used. I guess when you're the only game in town, you have to take what they give you but I think I'm pretty much done with Billy's mainly due to the server and the coffee/food quality. Donuts and coffee at the bakery in town is much more satisfying. Hell, even a bacon/egg/cheese croissant at BK is better. read more

Ok, Megan! I went back to Billy's for breakfast. This time there was a cook, two waitresses, and presumably a dishwasher. Somehow the dining room seemed bigger, as Sunday morning breakfast was on. And I saw someone I know, which is good considering I knew just two people in Blair the last time I was at Billy's. I ordered the pancake combo: 2 huge pancakes, 2 scrambled eggs, and two strips of bacon for me, plus coffee. The food was okay, the coffee was weak, but I could bask in the sun and knit as long as I wanted to, surrounded by the hubbub of my neighbors. That is worth an extra star. read more

We normally try to frequent the mom and pop cafes to spend money where it is appreciated. After eating at Billy's, we will not be back. It started with dirty coffee mugs and silverware but thought we'd still give the food a try. I was charged for the added sausage in my omelet but didn't get it because "the cook doesn't read tickets", and "this happens often". The final decision to not return came when my we reached the bottom of an apple muffin and found mold! The server tried saying it was blueberry until we reminded her that we ordered an apple muffin.... She did say she would make things right the next time we come in, however, sometimes you only get the first impression to leave a bad taste. My husband and I are always welcomed with a smile. The waitress knows what we want and brings our food to us quickly and piping hot. We have never had a problem with the staff or our orders. It is a clean place to eat at. We go every Saturday morning for breakfast. We highly recommend this place to eat at. Don't expect lavish decor it is a small town diner. Not so good. Poor service, greasy food, basically tasteless. The "sausage gravy" didn't have a single trace of sausage, just flour and water and maybe some milk. Toast was only partially toasted, making it soggy with butter. Since this is basically the only breakfast place in town, it's as though they don't have to try. Very disappointing. read more

Last Monday, I stopped in this cafe to have breakfast with my mom and daughter. There was 1 other table there when we got there and throughout the entire time, probably just a handful of people. We ordered our food. My daughter got the kids pancake with scrambled eggs and bacon. My mom asked the server if they put milk in the scrambled eggs because my daughter has a milk allergy and the server told us they did not. My mom and I ordered the veggie omelet to split. When our food arrived, which took a surprisingly long time for hardly anybody else in the cafe, there was a large dollop of butter on my daughter's pancake. I told the server that I didn't know that there was going to be butter on there (we had already mentioned the milk allergy) and she just looked at me. After her not offering a remedy, I asked her if we could get another one. Frustrated, she took her bare hand and swiped the pancake from my daughter's plate, leaving the rest of the food she ordered. I was a little taken back that she did that, but went on eating breakfast anyway. The server came back with a fresh pancake. She told us that next time I need to let her know no butter and if I do it again she was going to charge me. My mom was quite upset with her scolding us about the pancake (that we never asked her to comp in the first place) that she told the server "no, it's fine, we will pay for the pancake." And the server, upset, went on how she would cover the pancake and we need to tell them these things because they put butter on everything, then she started walking away not waiting from another response from us. We let her know, as she walked away, that we didn't know that they put butter like that on everything. After she left our table, we noticed that they gave my daughter sausage links instead of bacon, even the ticket we received reflected this. When the server came back, my mom offered the server advice (since she felt compelled to share with us how to handle order food on behalf of my daughter's milk allergy she's had for her entire 10 years of life, even after we told her initially she had it) and said "perhaps next time someone orders bacon you don't give them sausage." The server then rips the ticket out of my mothers hand and said "You're giving me a hard time! I'm not the owner!" The server then brings back bacon and my mom said "we didn't need it, I was just letting you know." Then the server told my mom "you've hated me from the time you've walked in. Don't worry about paying for any of your meal!" Then walked off, never to check on us again. We left money to cover the cost of the food, plus the extra bacon and pancake, and maybe a couple dollars left over. Again, my daughter has been dealing with an allergy her whole life and I've never had someone be so offended by it before. I love the community of Blair and it's unfortunate that we had an experience like this at a local cafe. read more

Hash browns, eggs, bacon, toast all good but...the diner wasn't very clean. Salt & pepper shakers very greasy, back of chairs greasy. If they would just clean it up, really clean it up and keep it that way it would be a place I could recommend. But not until then. read more

We drive thru Blair pretty often and always wanted to stop. So had the opportunity a few weeks ago and was super disappointed. The coffee was the first sign, it tasted terrible, coffee cups were gross, had the sausage egg omelet and it just had no flavor. Everything tasted like it was made with cheap poor quality ingredients. The OJ and syrup was good. I hate leaving a review like this because i love and appreciate small town USA but you guys need to step it up, this was not acceptable. read more

After 21 years away, I returned to Blair, NE in June 2015. My wife and I decided to visit the Blair Maple Cafe for breakfast. We had never been there before and had no preconceived ideas about it. It's just a storefront cafe in a downtown area like those found in many small Midwestern towns. Upon entering through the front door we discovered the dining room was one large room with a high ceiling like old buildings have, which was okay. It was clean. We sat at a table on the side of the room, but the air conditioning was blowing down the wall onto both of us and was too cold for my wife, who was fighting cancer. I told the waitress we'd rather move to a table near the center of the room and she got upset about it. I told her why and she became very snotty and rude. I got up and told her to her face that we will eat elsewhere, we didn't come there for her bad attitude. We left and I never returned until today, more than five years later. The name had been changed to Billy's Cafe and I thought perhaps it is under new ownership. I decided to give it another go. I parked and before I got to the door a woman came storming out, mad as hornets. She told me not to bother, the waitress was so rude to her she wanted to slap her. Then she stormed on down the sidewalk to her car and peeled out. I doubt she'll ever be back. I know for a fact I never will. The Family Fare supermarket seven blocks due East on Washington St. has a restaurant area and serves good fresh-cooked breakfasts for the same price range, but without the rude attitude. Billy's can forget my business.I don't know why they don't fire that woman. She has no business being a waitress. Two thumbs DOWN! read more

I am a huge fan of old diners where coffee seems to be the main reason you went. This is a very comfortable environment with mostly pleasant staff. Good food fort the price. The only downfall is the eggs. If you are an egg fanatic like I am, stay home and cook your own. Knowing that, we still love going there. The coffee is good.
