I have been going there for over 15 years.We went tonight for there prime rib, as usual it was perfect. However when i received the bill i was shocked that it was 6.00 more then on the menu. My prime rib was 28.00 plus 4 dollars for a loaded baked potato and 2 dollars for a salad. Apparently they raised the price's because of high food cost thanks Trump. My complaint is when we ordered dinner the waitress asked what two sides i would like she never mentioned that there was a upcharge for the sides, when i asked about she said its on the menu,and it was on the top of the menu in print so small you needed a magnifying glass to read it. This place is everything a hometown diner should be. It's cozy, it's friendly, and the food? Comfort on a plate. We kicked things off with the nachos--cheesy, beefy, and just messy enough to be fun. Bonus points for the tiny tubes of sour cream. Are they necessary? Maybe not. Are they iconic? Absolutely. I wasn't planning on ordering much, but then the sweet potato fries whispered to me. Waffle-cut and crispy, they came with a marshmallow dipping sauce that could probably broker world peace. So, I opted for the 3-piece chicken strips. They were more like giant nuggets, but those fries were the main attraction for me. Dad went for the half-order hot beef sandwich with a side salad dressed in good ol' Dorothy Lynch--the pride of the Midwest. Husband got the patty melt with curly fries because he knows how to live. Drinks were simple: A Bud Light, tea, and a Diet Pepsi for me (not a Coke joint, but we survive). Food came out fast, hot, and exactly as it should. I had a great experience here after a long hike at Hitchcock Nature Center. Our waitress was great--friendly and honest and experienced. The menu is varied (diner-style food) and some of the items (such as specials) are made in-house. The onion rings were made in from scratch in the kitchen that very morning. And it's not as if there are a lot of choices in a town the size of Crescent...with a population of under 700 people... So I'd say if you arrive hungry, you'll leave satisfied. Henry's Diner looks like it has been around for many years. Based on our experience, this place will be around for quite a while to come. There were still several patrons on a Monday even after the lunch hour. Many of them seemed to be regulars there. Service was friendly and efficient. The menu had a nice selection of appetizers, sandwiches, and dinners. There were also 4 daily specials -- I choose the Meatloaf dinner (good) with sides of Ham & Bean Soup (excellent) and American Fries (otherwise known as country potatoes -- also delicious). My wife had the Henry's Philly which had plenty of prime rib, peppers, cheese, and onions work a side of Onion Rings. Both were delicious! We had barely enough room to share a piece of Peach Pie. Stopped over in Crescent IA last night after some errands last night. Sounds this little joint not to far north off the main left turn. Their honey rolls and butter are amazeballs! And who doesn't dig club crackers?! It's been a while! T snagged the ribeye, side of spaghetti and potato. Griddle cooked. Cooked to how he likes it. Said it wasn't bad. Pretty sure he dug the spaghetti over the ribeye because that went FAST and comments about the sauce were made! I grabbed the Henry's Club Sandwich. Next time I'll have to ask for no lettuce because there was a TON of lettuce on it. Side salad and onion rings for the two sides. Those onion rings reminded me a lot of my favorite burger joints' rings, super good and flaky. The salad... I too had a hair (black and curly)... I couldn't bring myself to finish it so kindly moved that to the side. I can do a lot of things, but hair mixed with creamy dressing doesn't do it for me. Of course we grabbed their strawberry rhubarb (Ts) and a lemon pie (I loooove lemon) to go and both were excellent! Honestly all and all, the staff were amazing, I just wasn't overly impressed with the food. But I'll give them a second chance for sure, and see if not getting a short and curly, bumps them up a star or so. Sweet little drive for sure though! read more

A must stop! Arrived and parking lot was full, good sign. Walked into this small town diner with a large seating area greeted by a friendly hostess. Enjoyed the roast on the Hot-beef sandwich it was delicious, Tenderloin was the special it was good but a bit dry (not greasy which was a plus). Over heard they have great chili. The banana & coconut cream pies were ok, had a lingering off taste. We will try fruit pie next time. We will be back. read more

I was born and raised near Crescent, IA and I love coming to Henry's whenever I come home to visit. I can't tell you what all is good here because I always get the same thing -- their massive hot beef sandwich! A Midwest favorite and Henry's does it better than anyone else. One taste of the gravy and you know you've hit the mother load. My wife gets their chicken-fried steak which they bread themselves and she says it's the bomb as well. Our servers have always been kind, attentive, and diligent. They have large glasses which I enjoy and quickly get me refills before I run dry. Love this place! read more

A buddy and I stopped by for a late lunch yesterday. The special of the day was a Mexican menu. We both tried it out and it was pretty good. My buddy got the taco salad and 1/2 order of nachos while I got the full order of nachos. I think they messed up his meat order but he didn't mind. The nachos were good and filling. I have a rule not to criticize mom and pop places, but this is an exception. We ordered two cod dinners. Both were terrible. I think cornmeal is too heavy for cod, and in this case, the fish was sliced much too thin. I was traveling through on my solo (+my dog) road trip from Montana to North Carolina and popped off the interstate to grab a bite to eat that wasnt fried chicken from the gas station. these guys were the first to pop up on Google so I jumped off the road and swung by. at first I was worried I wouldnt get a seat because the parking lot was packed, but everyone must have driven their own car that night cause it was bustling but not nearly as crowded as I imagined it would be. they still gave me my own booth without me even asking! how did they know I've been cooped up in a car for 19 hours and needed a little wiggle room??? I felt bad at first and almost said I could sit at the bar top since I was just one person but they were still able to seat the 3-4 tops that were coming in at booths as well! The service was quick and my server was lovely. I got a sirloin with a salad fries and mushroom gravy. I dipped my fries in the gravy it was so good. Also the giant cup of gravy was only a $1.50 extra! all of the staff seemed to have a small town connection with each patron which really stood out to me. There's nothing like the kindness I felt just oozing out of that staff. Almost made me miss my waitressing days hahah. Hearing the FOH manager laughing with the people who clearly have been to this establishment hundreds of times, and the way he trusted his staff to do their jobs efficiently but stepping in if needed was so heartwarming. Man I would have killed for a manager like that once or twice. they asked about my travels after seeing my Montana ID and after telling my server I was traveling and just happened to land here cause I was hungry, she came back with one of their super cute staff "HENRYS DINER "nothin finer" tshirts that i was already admiring from the start. We were looking for better food than we might find at Mt Crescent lodge, and we definitely found it at Henry's in Crescent, IA. I came in with three hungry teenage boys, so I was glad to find a small town atmosphere with a friendly, outgoing waitress. Sometimes "the boys" can be a little over the top. I ordered the blue cheese 1/3 lb burger with onion rings, and the boys all got the same thing, the patty melt with curly fries. My burger was nice and lean, with a lot of blue cheese chunks on a huge toasted kaiser roll, with onion rings on top, and plenty of pickles, onion, tomato and lettuce garnish on the side. And the onion rings were home made fresh, tender onion slices with a light, crispy batter. It was one of the best burger meals I've had in recent memory, for sure. The boys all devoured theirs too, although they said it was a little greasy. But that's a traditional patty melt, right? We all left stuffed and happy, and I'll definitely be bringing the rest of my family back for dinner soon! read more

We recently had breakfast and it was ok. The service was good, waitresses were friendly and the prices are reasonable, but food was just ok. My husband had the chicken fried steak special and it was not good at all. It was tough and bland. I had a basic breakfast of eggs, hash browns and bacon. The eggs were cooked as ordered, but the bacon was chewy and hash browns were mushy and lacked flavor. The cinnamon roll was definitely the highlight of our meal. It was warm and came with a side of cinnamon butter. However, the cinnamon butter was hard/cold and would have been a lot better if softened. We've also been for lunch and dinner and those meals were decent, better than breakfast, but nothing to get excited about. We live in the area and were really hoping for a better experience and that Henry's would become a regular place for us. read more

Good food and fast service - I recommend Henry's for a good sit down meal without the big city prices

My wife and I purchased a Chipper Deal to Henry's Diner and were finally able to use it a few days ago, on a Sunday morning for breakfast. My wife and I walked in and were greeted and seated immediately. The older waitress then came over and just seemed to be in a bad mood. My wife asked to try their orange juice before making her decision on what to drink and that seemed to put her off even more. I ordered the two pork chop breakfast combo with eggs and hash browns. The two pork chops were super thin, over cooked and weren't that good at all. The hash browns and eggs were okay, nothing special. But what can you expect for $7.50? My wife and I split two biscuits and gravy as a side. You definitely get a lot of food, but the gravy was bland and practically tasteless. Not worth the $4 in my opinion. The waitress seemed to be in a better mood towards the end of our meal, not sure why. I really wanted to like this place, but overall, the food was definitely sub par and the prices don't reflect the poor food quality. I wouldn't mind trying lunch or dinner sometime, but if the food is anything like their breakfast, then Their motto 'Nothin Finer' definitely doesn't fit. We ate at Henry's Diner this past Saturday and it was wonderful. Friendly staff and delicious food! The prices are so reasonable. One of us ordered the filet. At 8 Oz it was a steal. I would put it up to any steakhouse in Omaha! Cooked perfectly medium rare, tender, and didn't require any extra seasonings. Another person ordered chicken fried chicken and was also very good. Generous portions, well prepared and sides were good. The only complaint is the mashed potatoes seemed like instant. The service was outstanding- very helpful and thoughtful. Henry's Diner's motto "Nothin Finer" isn't quite appropriate. My husband and I stopped here after a local restaurant was unexpectedly closed this afternoon. When we opened the door, seeing the dark interior was almost enough to make me turn away. One look at the menu had me extremely surprised. A BLT with fries for $7.75 in Crescent, Iowa? I thought this better be one good sandwich. The grilled cheese was more appropriately priced. It took a bit until somebody came to our booth, but we placed our drink orders - coffee for $1.45 and a soda for $1.95. The food was delivered hot and promptly after our ordering. The BLT was as basic as they come, with mediocre bacon, iceberg lettuce and additional fixings. My grilled cheese was served on white bread, though I did request wheat. Many fries were on each plate. But I'm sorry, the food that is served here is NOT worth the prices on the menu. We were pretty upset with the $20 (with tip) for this meal and will absolutely not be coming back. I do love the diner but I feel like their menu items have been very varied over the past few years. I loved the cheese curds when I first went to the diner but now they are too soggy and a little too tiny. I do have positives about the diner though, such as, their breakfast menu prices; and their breakfast food variability. I love that they offer so many breakfast items such as their #2, which is $4.95 with two eggs and two plate sized pancakes. Their variability also goes into their huge, pan-cooked omelets, that usually have 2-5 ingredients all under $10 (this meal is usually able to feed at least two average adults). I love their portions that they serve for their breakfast and some items on their lunch and dinner menu. I do love their lunch and dinner menu but some of the items are not very different from other diners and restaurants. Their menu is pretty generic for an American diner; with the classic appetizers like cheese curds, French fries, and mozzarella sticks. So if you do like the generic American diner with some grease but not too much I feel like Henry's diner is a great, small town, locally owned establishment. They have all the good things in life like beer, burgers, and wings. If you're into supporting local establishments like clothing stores and/or restaurants and fast food joints then you should totally go to Henry's diner. All restaurants, diners, and fast food organizations have their flaws and none of them can be completely perfect which is why I'm giving this establishment a 4 out of 5 stars. We were driving around and wanting something really good on a Saturday night. We found Henry's Diner and decided to give it a shot. The interior is plain- nothing fancy at all. Some customer's were dressed up, some looked like they just got off work from the fields. But can the food over come the lack luster interior? YES, we both ordered prime rib. I love prime rib and not very many places can make it both tender and flavor full. Service was really good. Food was delivered quickly, drinks were always full, the server was polite, friendly, and quick. I have to say you get a lot of food, and every bit was good. I had soup- clearly homemade- like mom made- well, before she got a microwave. Hash browns were crispy, yet tender. I really loved the spaghetti- it was really good with a fantastic sauce. But let's get to the main event- the Prime Rib. The prime rib has the best flavor I have ever had. The outside crust was life changing. The juice was hot and I could not get enough. The meat was so tender. I have not had a meal that good in a long, long, time. Everyone agreed, this place was special. I quickly regretted not getting the biggest size to take some home. As we left- we were in total bliss and it was the meal we really wanted. We asked to talk to the manager- and told him how the meal will remembered. His brother makes the prime rib from scratch and it shows. It is made with love and with a dash of perfection. We have been back and will go back. My only criticism is they do struggle with Medium-rare- it was a little brown instead of pink- but the flavor and texture- PERFECT. I actually came to Crescent, Iowa to eat at Denny's Pizza, but they were not open on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon where the town seemed packed and full of life. Almost a flea market atmosphere in the streets. I then saw the packed parking lot at Henry's Diner and decided that I would try that instead. Henry's is a large metal building and upon entering you notice how much of the place is in the dark. Like people sitting and eating in a darkened half of a building. Only one row of strip lighting on and the natural light. Odd. I sat at the bar and was waited on promptly and asked if I had ever been there before. I said no-and he went through the things that they are known for. Hot beef, tenderloin, onion rings, hamburger etc. I went with the mushroom and swiss burger and curly fries. The bar area is sports themed and the dinning area was more country home themed. Free wi-fi with no password needed. My food arrived-the burger was good. Good beef, hot and juicy, bun toasted and tasted good. Lots of mushrooms (though they were definitely canned mushrooms). The curly fries were you basic curly fries and not seasoned (which is fine with me). A satisfying lunch. Nothing really worth driving over for specifically, but if travelling the old Lincoln Highway or going skiing it is not a bad option. Best meal I've had in a while. Very affordable and excellent service. Took my mom for the prime rib special. We got onion rings too, her favorite. All of it was superb.
