We came here a week ago for breakfast. It was ok. Nothing to write home (or a review) about. We came here for dinner tonight. They tried to poach eggs directly on the flat top. They burnt them completely and gave up. Ok. Understandable. They then asked me to change my egg order. Ok, soft scramble. That should work fine on a flat top. Well, after NOT cleaning the flat top, they tried soft scramble three times. Each time it came out dry scramble with many burnt bits from the flat top they hadnt cleaned. Very nasty and inedible. Add to that the fact they didnt want to give up and refund the money. Add to that a very indifferent waitress who clearly did not want to be there. AVOID this place! read more

Classic diner food after a long day on the road. There's was one cook and one young man handling everything else. I didn't get this young man's name, but he was hustling like a madman, cleaning tables, seating guests, taking orders, checking on guests, and everything else in between. He was polite and attentive. He was basically running the whole time. The cook, well that's a different story. Zero personality and zero cooking skills. One of the entrees was so salty, it was inedible. She also forgot three items that were part of the meal. Overall, everyone else enjoyed their meals and gave kudos to the young man with the amazing work ethic. read more

We were caught in a winter storm so camped at Little America. We had to go into Green River for supplies. I was looking for a recommended place to grab dinner. Honestly, I didn't see any great reviews on Yelp from area restaurants. We were headed back to Little America and passed Penny's Diner. It is a nostalgic 50's style diner. I am so glad we gave it a go. We were greeted as soon as we went through the door with warm smiles by the young gentleman at the counter. We choose our booth. My husband had the Chicken Fried Steak with Mashed Potatoes and I ordered the Chicken Strips with Fries. Everything was hot and delicious. Large portions. I took home a doggy bag. If you're looking for a no-frills roadside meal, you won't be disappointed. But here's the thing--just down the road, Green River is still gassing shelter animals. While you're enjoying a milkshake, unwanted pets are being euthanized with a method so outdated and inhumane that most states banned it years ago. So yeah, Penny's is fine, but the town itself? Not so much. Maybe Green River should take a page from the diner's book--if you can update a menu, you can update your ethics. Would I stop for breakfast again? Sure. I hesitated when it appeared to be connected to a hotel. I should have listened to my gut and kept driving. It was seat yourself and we walked to one side of the restaurant and it was semi Arctic conditions. So, we walked to the other side and took a seat next to the restrooms that, while not ideal, didn't have the threat of hypothermia or frostbite. Within a couple of minutes on came the AC for that part of the restaurant and the temperature plummeted. We lost 2 Sherpas to the cold. The menu has to be downloaded from a QR code and after several minutes of trying, neither of us were able to view the menu. The temperature continued to fall and we lost 2 more Sherpas and the table next to us had to be taken to a warming station. I then set a timer that we would leave if no one came to check on the table. The server made it just under the wire. Again I should have listened to the gut and made for warmer climes. The server let us know after all of the effort that Tmobile doesn't work there. We were not surprised at this point when they didn't have a menu but they had a printout from a dot matrix printer that was stapled together and I'm sure was sanitized after each use. The temperature continued to fall and the table near us fell into a crevasse and their entire party was lost. The wife and I each finalized on either the chicken fried chicken or the French dip. So we decided to order both and go halvesies. After a monumental amount of time in which two sled dog teams were lost to the cold, our food came out. Up until this point we found that our experience has been merely unpleasant. One bite of the French dip was so disappointing I hoped to see another French Revolution. I tried another bite and found it to be even fouler. I don't know if it was the meat, cheese or Au Jus but for the first time in my life I set down most of a French dip and did not eat any of it. Now on to the chicken fried chicken. It came out as chicken fried steak. It actually wasn't bad. It wasn't worth 4 Sherpas and a couple of dog sled teams, but not bad. The mashed potatoes though were completely awful. The wife said it was like they used potato flakes and added water with no milk, butter or mixing. I did my due diligence and tried two full bites of them and like the French dip, left the rest uneaten for the first time. After a time, when we still were not visited by the wait staff (who were actually very nice) we made the decision to not be another table lost to the madness of old Jack Frost and went to the front to pay. I feel fortunate to have survived this arctic nightmare and were saddened to have needed to eat the sled dogs for sustenance. One star for the chicken fried steak and tater tots. read more

The fun 50's decor, the friendly service and the cleanliness earned these stars. The food we ordered, the turkey dinner and the chicken fried chicken dinner was edible enough to not be sent back because of the nice waitress, but still left me feeling unfulfilled and crying on the inside for real food in the middle of a long travel day. Absolutely FANTASTIC food. I came here after a rodeo with a buddy. We were both hungry and cold and we wanted a good warm dinner. We lucked out! At 10:30pm this place was open. After being seated I notice that the items on the menu were your quintessential diner fare. Burgers, chicken fried steak, breakfast. Ect. My buddy got pancakes, sausage, bacon and a milk shake (I know I know). I got the sourdough bacon burger with extra bacon and fries. It was all DELICIOUS!! I was blown away at how fresh everything tasted. My burger was perfectly cooked with good strong bacon on top. My fries were hot and CRISPY! I'm just very happy that Penny's came through. The food was nasty and service medicore. I orders the Montery chicken. I asked for a side of mixed vegetables and a dinner salad. My husband orderd a 3 egg omelet and asked if they had fruit. The waitress said they had bananas so he said he would like a banana and no hashbrowns. This omlete came out and was bland, the banana was not just soft but rotten. I asked the waitress if they had another one and she said, "they all look like that, we just use them in our shakes." My order came out and the waitress said "We were out of mixed veggies so I gave you corn." The corn was all dried out. Honestly it looked like you could almost pop it. My chicken looked like it was boiled and over boiled at that. They threw some cut mushrooms, bell peepers and tomatoes on top of it that they did even sautee and then topped it with cheese and I am sure microwaved it because I don't think there is any other way to make a piece of chicken so dry that it literally crumbles when you try to cut it. There was no sauce of any kind and was so dry and bland that I couldn't eat it. While I was sitting there I looked out the window and saw this rock that looked like a poop emoji and thought that about sums up their food.. Not a lot of choices in Rock Sprngs but this would not be my choice ever again. read more

Based off cleanliness, atmosphere, customer service and taste. The cleanliness in this diner is very clean, tables and counters and bathrooms were constantly cleaned. The only thing is that the diner does have a odd scent. Not pleasant but not awful. Just off. The atmosphere is so cute. I love the theme this diner has. The customer service by Matt was excellent. He was quick, prompt, polite and friendly. This is not my hometown but he made my party feel welcomed. The taste is the reason this restaurant has three stars, it is not bad, just generic flavors. I ordered a burger and country fried steak and it was just meh. Nothing really stood out but it did the job and kept our bellies full! No one was there and it looked like it was closed, When we went in we were given a dirty crumpled up piece of paper for a menu that had tiny little pictures you could barely see of what they had. I was so very disappointed so we got up and left. we went to another restaurant and liked it. Sad to see such a great place that has the potential to be a great restaurant. So sad as we use to love this place as a late night stop on our way through Green River, WY but haven't been there for a while. Stopped tonight about 9pm for dinner. Walked in every table was dirty and employee said good luck finding somewhere clean the counters kinda clean and sat down at the counter and started talking. There was only one table with someone there and 2 people sitting at the counter so they were not busy. We ended up just sitting down at the counter and we ordered water, we were handed the QR code to bring up the menu and it was not working. I asked if they had a regular menu since I couldn't get the menus to pull up and the waitress said no and waked away. My wife and I were looking for a dinner that served breakfast. Penny's is located in Green River Wy. and just off the freeway. The coffee was fresh and hot, the waitress was very helpful and kind. We decided to split a breakfast order of chicken fried steak with 2 eggs and hash browns, rye toast and a side of sausage. It was a kind pleasant surprise that the cook split the meal onto two plates. This is great place and they are open 24hrs. Highly recommended by two older people who just want a good meal. Also we watched the cook making a sandwich (looked like a club) we were tempted to order one to go it looked so good. read more

The food is pretty good. The French toast is perfect, it is crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. The bacon is okay, it tasted a little microwaved though. The pancakes are fluffy and pretty good. The chicken tenders, eggs, and sausage are also pretty good choices. The drinks were not so great though. The water tasted like metal and the ice tea wasn't strong at all. The service is good but could be better. The staff is very nice and friendly but the service is a little slow even though we were the only ones there. It is nicely decorated and the music isn't too loud and fits the theme of the restaurant. The tables and seats are also very clean. We were a little on edge about this place after reading the reviews but it was a nice place to stop for dinner after a long day of driving. read more

Great place in Green River! We were staying at Hampton Inn and tried this little vintage diner for our late dinner. The homemade potato chips were superb! Crispy hot goodness. My kiddo had the chicken sandwich which comes with bacon on toasted bun - he love it. "10 out of 10" in his book. My hubby had the chicken fried steak and he enjoyed it very much and so did I. The mashed potatoes were real and very tasty. The gravy was great. I had the rocking Ruben which was tasty but my hubbies meal was better. We also ordered the old fashion milkshakes. This place is great. Kudos to the cook lady, she was hassling on the grill and serving at the tables when it got busy. We are coming back for breakfast in the am. read more

I discovered, after reading several reviews of this little diner, that I was looking for the "grumpy" early morning waitress when we entered at 7am for a quick bite before hitting the road. Well, either she wasn't there, or I chose not to see a sour disposition and just focus on starting out her day right. I smiled big as we entered and she returned it. Her service was exemplary, the food was delicious. I would like to encourage people to look beyond a frown, one doesn't know what has happened in that person's life in the last five minutes, last hour, the day before. The coffee was great, the scramble I had was full of crisp green pepper, onion, flavorful mushrooms, chunks of crispy bacon and the eggs were perfectly done. I even got my picture taken with Debbie, the server, and I'm sure that both of our days were better for the encounter. Actually, one should know that customers of the Oak Tree Inn do NOT get vouchers for free food any longer. They stopped doing this three weeks before we visited, figures! :) read more

This was one of the worse experiences of my eating life. Service was not good at all and neither was the food. They were more concerned about getting glasses of water out then the hot food. This lead to cold food coming to us. Almost everything was frozen, all the way down to the biscuits and pie. We were told that the chips were "homemade" but they were frozen as well. I also saw a meat for another customers meal was microwaved. Still can't believe that. My Philly Cheese Steak was made with what seemed to be hamburger meat and not the typical meat. It is very unfortunate for this place that I could see the kitchen and what was going on. It's also unfortunate for them that I used to own a sports bar and know how food service should be done. We were warned that this place is hit or miss and it was definitely a miss. I would rather go to McDonalds 2+ miles down the road then to ever go here again. read more

It is conveniently close to the Lincoln Highway (I-80) Exit #89. Convenient return to the freeway and easy truck or trailer parking behind the Sinclair gas station next door.
