We all remarked about how great the food tasted, until I complained from the bathroom about the cold sweat and nausea I experienced at 3am. I blamed the MSG, without knowing if that was true or not. Having said that, I gave it a low rating due to two very correctable items; 1) We had to send silverware back in order the receive clean utensils. (We actually used chopsticks just to be safe.) 2) The bathroom was filthy and not because the former occupant made a mess. The floor was filthy and dirt was literally lining the edges of the small carpet, as well as stuck to the floor, in the bathroom. Again, assuming it was the spices and not MSG, I would eat there again, although it would have to be carry out with chopsticks! read more

Kam Shen used to be my go-to for Chinese Takeaway, but Penguin's Kitchen offers a menu that is a little more varied, and the quality of the food is of higher quality (fresher preparation, less heavy in the use of oil). I have had no misses, and only some small niggling disappointments that may simply be personal preferences (i.e. I have observed that there's a little to heavy a hand with the sour elements in some dishes). Above all, a chance to try variations on dishes that are worth an audition for the North American palate like Singapore style Mei Fun. read more

We love Chinese food and after reading the rave reviews we tried Penguins Kitchen. it was the worst meal ever and we threw it away. the large wonton soup had 4 wontons normally there are 8. the wontons were hard and unchewable. the filling was scant. we tried the very positive reviewed King Poa Chicken which had over fried an hard pieces of chicken in sauce. the Cashew chicken had a weird smell and we could not eat it. their egg rolls were the smallest we have ever seen. the cost was much higher than it should have been. we will not stray again from our favorite Kam Shang. sorry but previous reviews were really off read more

I haves dined there twice now. Everything is new and clean. Our service was friendly and prompt. I had the butter shrimp lunch and the Szechuan shrimp lunch. So - I blamed myself and tried again. Still marginal. Good was ok - but no better than any other place in the area. The crab Rangoon were good - but everything else was meh. I ordered a salad starter bc IOVE the ginger dressing.. we also ordered dumplings and crab puffs to start. Our waitress made several comments about the amount of food we ordered. Then onto mains, my husband ordered the general tso chicken and i the veg lomein. again comments on a lot of food. we shared and took two to-go boxes. First time trying this restaurant and have finally found my go to for Chinese and Hibachi!! Service was quick, dined in and the place was clean and fresh, and the food was exceptional. Crab rangoon was the best I've had, Chicken Teriyaki was grilled to perfection, and veggies cooked just the right amount with a nice grill flavor. Big portions too. It was a Monday, and our favorite Chinese place was closed so we decided to try Penguin's Kitchen for lunch carry out. Got the sweet and sour chicken lunch "special" and the Mei fun entree, Singapore style. No complaints about the "Mei Fun" but the sweet and sour chicken with fried rice left a lot to be desired. I ordered crab Rangoon as a side. When I got home, there was one small condiment-sized container of sweet and sour sauce. I figured since it was such a small container it must be for the crab Rangoon, but when I opened my entree, my entree had no sauce on it. So either they forgot to include it in the carry out, or they are ultra skimpy on their sauce. I tried spreading out the bit of sauce they DID include on the entree, but it didn't coat everything, so the breaded chicken tasted very bland. Fried rice was also very bland, having just cooked egg and onions, no green peas or other veggies in it. The price was a lot more compared to our favorite place catty-corner from Penguin, so this ended up being a thumbs down. read more

Just wanted to throw my support behind this restaurant. This primarily for selfish reasons; I love their food and I want them to stay in business. There are never many customers when I've been there, possibly because the last Chinese restaurant at that location was terrible. Penguins is completely different though. They are an Asian restaurant, so there's Japanese options available and every option I've tried is delicious. I've even tried my daughters orange chicken, which I normally hate, because of the thick orange syrup that covers the chicken. It was really good! No heavy syrup. We have been looking for a good Chinese restaurant in the Kearney/Liberty area. I believe we have found our place! First, the restaurant is clean! Floors, tables..all clean and no stickiness. The food was very good without being over breaded or swimming in a sauce. The vegetables in my cashew chicken were large and not over cooked. Every thing seemed to be freshly made to order.
