The coconut curry soup was on point. Really great depth of flavor and I could taste the pride the chef took in it. Excellent! We also enjoyed a bacon, ham and cheese panini. It was cooked after we ordered it. Fresh. The free water, tea and coffee were a nice touch. Finishing off with a couple of amazing cookies was a treat. Fresh baked this morning. I enjoyed Thelma's Kitchen very much. We were also able to buy a neighbor lunch, which I encourage everyone to do.

Walk up to get food. I hear they have great soups but was too hot to try today.

Come for the friendly people, clean restaurant and great food! I just came for a cookie and left with so much more. I Love pay it forward places and love that it's matched with great food. Had a wonderful chicken sandwich! Donate a token while you are here and have a cookie! For the Disney fans it's next to the old Laugh-o-gram studio they are raising funds to restore.

Amazing food and option to pay forward meals to the community. Definitely stop by, the people who served us were so kind and helpful!

Panini and sandwiches are offered as well. All dishes come with a soup, side, dessert and drink. Hard to beat for $7-10!

KC is very fortunate to have this place! Thelma's never disappoints when it comes to food, and I have always left full and satisfied. Whether you want a hot entree (which switches daily with the exception of Tenderloin Tuesday) or a sandwich, all dishes come with a soup, side, dessert, and drink. All the food is fresh and homemade, and the price point is very reasonable for all the food you receive. If you have an opportunity to volunteer here, take it! I volunteer here, and it's always been a delight and a highlight of my week. The people here are very friendly and truly enjoy serving the community. They take pride in their mission with their professionalism and generosity. If interested in learning more about volunteering, go to their website for more information on how to sign up. Whether you come to volunteer or eat here for lunch, you're not going to be disappointed!

Vegetarian platter, veggie patty, soup, salad, roasted potatoes and the most amazing oatmeal cookie.

I went to Thelma's not really knowing what to expect. I had the vegetarian platter which included mixed greens with red onion, feta, strawberries and vinaigrette, a veggie patty, tomato vegetable soup, roasted potatoes with onions and an oatmeal raisin cookie. So here's the thing about Thelma's, it's a pay what you can joint so the whole point is to feed and be fed. If you can't afford to eat, Thelma's will feed you, and if you can they will feed you, and you help them do it with your donation. When it comes time to pay, they just ask you to pay what you can. There is a suggested donation based on a small or large plate size, feel free to give more than the suggested amount. Thelma's name is based on a real person who helped her community thrive, and now her namesake restaurant is doing its best to continue her mission in the Troost neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri. I didn't expect the food to be much, but honestly, this place was just like being fed by your best auntie who slays in the kitchen. I was hesitant about the veggie patty but if my taste buds had socks, they'd be gone. On another visit, I took my family there for lunch and we had a legit fried pork tenderloin, baked beans, salad, soup and dessert. Drinks are included and I loved having a cup of Roasterie coffee with my dessert. Also, I don't partake of raisins, just not a fan, but I'm not a toddler so I will always try different foods even if they typically aren't my favorite. The oatmeal raisin cookie they served was hands down the best cookie I've had in the last year. I know my cookies. Thelma's is worth a try, and if the food doesn't keep you coming back then I hope the culture does. It's a beautiful place where the city meets, the city eats and the city shows off its heart.

On the corner of 31st and Troost sits Thelma's Kitchen. It's a community kitchen and that's exactly what you can find: community. All kinds of people sitting and eating together. When you first walk in you are greeted with warm smiles and an explanation of how this place works. You can get a big plate or a small plate and you choose from a few different options. All of it is home cooked and DELICIOUS. Here's the cool part: you pay what you can. They ask for donations. $7 for the small plate, $10 for the big plate, but pay what you can or pay more if you can. You also have the option to volunteer with cleaning or serving and can snag a meal that way. What a cool vision of community! Luckily, I work across the street and I cannot wait to become a regular.

You can tell a lot of thought went into creating the space. What really sets this place apart is the wood-fired cooking. Everything is prepared over Missouri hickory and oak, and you can truly taste the difference. The food has this incredible smoky depth that makes every bite feel elevated and intentional. I also love that they source ingredients from local farmers, which really comes through in how fresh and vibrant everything tastes. The menu feels seasonal, thoughtful, and well-executed. The food itself is not only beautifully presented, but packed with flavor. Every dish I tried was cooked perfectly and left a lasting impression. They're open for lunch, and they also offer catering from casual office lunches to full events. I've heard amazing things about their charcuterie boards as well. It was a full, nicely cooked piece with great flavor, not a small portion tossed in as an afterthought. The salad had fresh greens, avocado, egg, and plenty of nuts and toppings that made it feel filling and well put together. My only issue was the packaging. The salad container was left fully open inside the bag, and the bag was stapled shut. I did not realize there were staples and cut my hand opening it. Because I was in a hotel and had put a few small items in the bag, they ended up falling right onto the exposed salad when I opened it. For delivery orders, a closed container and a safer seal would make a big difference. Food quality was excellent though, and I would order again, just hoping for better delivery packaging next time.

When we told her it was our first visit to the restaurant, she took the time to carefully go over the menus with us (regular, happy hour, and drinks), providing her recommendations when we asked. Her guidance was spot-on-target! For drinks, I had a Mindful Chai and my friend had the 3-Beverage Flight (Golden Hour, Heart Says Thanks, and Tres Raices). My chai was the BEST I have ever tasted (and I order chai every chance I get!), and my friend loved her 3 drinks (she said Tres Raices was her favorite). For our food, we split an order of the Not Queso Dip and the Avocado Tostadas. We were both very impressed by how fresh the ingredients were, and the blend of flavors in each dish that created a unique and yummy taste. The Kitchen has an open, airy layout that inspires deep breathing, while the arrangement and spacing of tables still provides for intimacy of conversation and minimal ambient noise. Sofhia checked back with us several times during our meal to ensure we had everything we needed and were thoroughly enjoying our food and drink (we were!). It was a delightful meal, and we thank Sofhia, the kitchen staff, and everyone at Whole Harvest Kitchen for such a lovely time. We'll be back!!

We didn't sample, but next time I'd like to try a flight of their wellness drinks! The LETTUCE CRUNCH WRAPS (soy-glazed jicama & tofu, lentil, pickled veg, walnut, cilantro, sesame dip) were an absolute favorite. Highly recommended! The texture was very well balanced. Silky smooth butter lettuce and a delicious sauce on the side, although it truly didn't even need it. The AVOCADO TOSTADAS (blue corn tostada, guacamole, quinoa, white bean, radish, pickled red onion, super seed) were yummy, but our least favorite of the three. Instead of a thin layer of mashed avocados, I'd honestly just put a few nice slices of avocado for the bulk of it. Taste was lovely! It is a totally cold dish, fyi. The HARVEST WOK BOWL (split pea-fu, beluga lentil, farro, snap pea, greens, brown rice, daikon, cashew, ginger-scallion sauce) was completely phenomenal. I could do without the split pea-fu, but it probably added some great nutrition! The FLAVOR and texture of this dish was so so good. I can't even right now. (As my teenager would say...) Enjoy!!

Okay Modern Market, I see you…read more I was on the hunt for a healthy-ish spot for lunch (I mean, hello it is January), when I came upon Modern Market Eatery on Yelp. Upon doing some research I learned it's a scratch kitchen specializing in clean eats, and that it's a chain. A win for the health options, a ding for the chain, but not all chains are bad, an we are living in a time where there are some winners. So, I packed myself up and headed down the road to Prairie Village. It's still fairly new, and it has that squeaky clean feeling to it when you arrive. Inside it's counter service and you seat yourself (they will bring the food to you). It kind of reminded me of how Noodles and Company felt when they first became a thing way back in the early 2000s. I ordered a thai salad that came in at under 400 calories so I was honestly skeptical at how big or flavorful it would really be when it arrived, and holy cow was it good. The chicken was cold, but still held some flavor, the dressing was great, there were fresh veggies, pickled onions. It was one of the best 400 calorie meals I've had in a long time. My dad ordered the salmon curry and he also enjoyed his though I didn't try it so jury's out on my opinion! I left full and happy to have discovered this spot. I'll be back soon!

When I was ordering a lemonade, I asked if I could get half lemonade, and the other half iced tea. They didn't understand, so I emphasized, half lemonade, half tea, and they then flatly told me, "We're going to give you a lemonade, and there's tea over there, so you can figure it out."
