    Supreme Soy Sauce Fried Noodles
    Andrew W.

Passed by this old time Seafood Restaurant and though that I would re-visit and give it a try. Just a bit pass 12:30 mid-day, should be their lunch rush, but already able to find parking on their lot so I would think there should not be any problem with getting a table, and indeed not busy at all. Items ordered: Soy Sauce Chow Mein $12.98 3 stars Typical dish to go with congee, its a very simple dish, but to do it correctly its not as easy as it looks, here the flavouring is on point, but if the Chef can do a bit more tossing on the Wok on higher heat the caramelization would be even better! Congee with Cilantro & Minced Beef $8.50 4 stars Outstanding! Consistency and texture for the congee is just right, all the ingredients balanced, beef is not over cooked and still has a tender texture. Overall, a great bowl of congee! Marinated Jelly Fish with Beef Shank $8.99 3.5 stars All the flavourings are done well, the only thing to improve is the texture of the Jelly Fish, it may need a bit more poaching under warm water to make it more crunchy, but still good, beef is well seasoned and also very tender. Clams in Black Bean Sauce $8.09 4 stars Clams are on the small side but this item is a special item with 10% off regular price of $8.99. Still very very fresh, the clams are tender and very sweet, the black bean sauce is always a perfect match for any kind of seafood! Steamed Spare Ribs $5.50 4 stars Funny enough this is the only "Dim Sum" item I ordered today, also done very well, the pieces of ribs are just the right size and with the right ratio of meat and bone, sauce is well seasoned. Service is attentive and polite, my observation is that the service level in Chinese Restaurants in Vancouver has improved, of course, today is not crazy busy for them but I do find there is a change in the wind! Hope it will continue to blow in the positive direction! Final Score: 3.7 stars Verdict: Recommend ( do venture out of the regular dim sum menu and try their kitchen dishes )

    Sweet n sour pork

Pelican seafood restaurant is located on Hasting St and Victoria Drive. We came here for dinner with my husband's friend a group of 10. We made a reservation at 7pm and we all arrived early. The manager came over and recommended the feature for the night and seafood dishes to us. However, we ordered our own preference dishes instead. Sweet and sour pork - deep fried and the sweet and sour sauce just perfect. Fish fillet with vegetables - really questionable freshness of the fillet. Strong frozen taste and fishy. Pork chop with onion sauce - it was good but not great. Beef short ribs - paper thin beef short ribs maintained lightly, just ok. Dried scallops with egg white fried rice - it's ok. Chicken - Over deep fried chicken, disappointed. Lamb - able to find few chunks of lamb in the clay pot Prawns and okra - it's tasty Winter melon with fried scallops - simple dish but too much corn starch sauce. Stir fried gai lan - shiny dishes I ever had! Very oily! I'm pretty sure they heavily use of MSG in the dishes coz we had unquenchable thirst after the dinner! Reasonable price but unacceptable MSG dish for my stomach.

This place hits the spot! We all had a hankering for Chinese food. We were happy to see that they were open again. We ordered our favourites (honey garlic spareribs, pea shoots in garlic, green beans with shrimp, and braised tofu with mushrooms) and the cook prepared exactly as requested. He even made dim sum shrimp hai gao which not an usual dinner request! The manager also served as the greeter, cook, and server given the circumstances of the pandemic. We were impressed with his efficiency and attentiveness. We were so hungry I forgot to take photos, and when I remembered, only a few bites were left on the dish. Lol. These are trying times for many small businesses. Please support local. They're doing the best they can! We all wished each other to 'keep safe' when we left. We'll be back!

They charge for food containers and tea if you eat in. They have 20% off promotions on take out!

It used to serve decent dimsum but it was not as good as it used to be this time. We still enjoyed the minced pork beans (amazing) and chive cake but the Xiaolongbao (小籠包) we went for was very disappointing, almost microwaved frozen food like. It was the only near by restaurant serves it, plus we used to love their food but sadly, covid price up/quality declined food this time. They used to give quite generous amount of prawns which I loved about them but really stingy this time.‍

    Taiwanese broccoli and beef

Second time eating this week and I love jellyfish. This time I ordered an order of jellyfish, beef and vegetable rice noodle saucy, Taiwanese broccoli, and the pig stomach and pepper soup. All the dishes were amazing. Will be coming here again pretty soon.

    So busy in the morning.

We arrived around 11:30 and got seated pretty quick even though it was rush hour here. Check out the picture to see a quick snip. You can't expect much at Dim sum restaurants, so I'll just keep it short and simple. When you sit down, if you want cups of water for the whole table, make sure you ask. They won't give it to you since they're really busy and hope you'll just take the tea.

    "Pan fried" flat noodles
    Jay J.

Ordered a 4 person course. I requested to change the fried rice to pan fried dry flat noodles. The manager then said that the price on the menu was wrong and he needed to add $20. I said fine. Half way through the meal he told me that the flat noodles cost a extra $5. I was annoyed but I was in front of my clients so I said it's fine. Most of the food that arrived was barely warm like it's been sitting around for a while. However when the "Pan fried DRY flat noodles" came I was instantly disgusted. The noodles were barely cooked and was sitting in a pool of salty mess. Let's just say the noodles remained untouched. Based on my experience I would not recommend this place and I wouldn't come back.

    Spring rolls

Expensive and poor quality food with dreadful service. I have to update this review because my recent visit was simply awful. Poor customer service is given in most Chinese restaurants, but this place takes it to a whole different level. Came here for dim sum/ lunch at around 1:30pm on a weekday, the restaurant was half filled yet it took at least 10 minutes for anyone to acknowledge us with tea and menu. When they brought the tea, brought the wrong one, and when I asked for the waiter to swap it out for me he seemed extremely annoyed. I had to ask for a pair of chopsticks twice cuz it was missing a place set and still I had to get it myself from the next table cuz the sever next got back to me. The food took at least another 30mins . Dumplings were overcooked/ steamed, chive pancake tasted stale, siu mai was passable. There are PLENTY of good Chinese restaurants out there and I won't be returning to Pelican

One of my choices if someone calls for dim sum, as they are not too far from where I live, and the quality is consistent every time I come back. This place has some great food, in taste and now in portion size which gives it value. I came just yesterday with my mom and some of her friends, a big table of 10, which always means mass ordering to feed the group. This place does things by sheet ordering, tick the box, but the number inside the dish that you want and it shall be steamed, pan fried, deep fried to order. I noticed their sheet was bigger, no longer was it a small sheet, but almost the size of letterhead paper, and accompanied by a clipboard so you can check off your order in the air, instead of right on the table. There is a huge letterhead sized advertisement on the table showing their specials, one was the the hot pot beef they had for the night, and the other side had a braised, pan fried salmon dish for dim sum for $4.95. Since we had so many people on the table, we ordered this dish as well. We came in a 2, almost the end of dim sum service, so the place wasn't that busy, but what is good about made to order places is that they will always have food for you, unlike places that push around carts of food hoping to get rid of the leftovers. From pan fried soy sauce rice wraps, haw gow, sui mai, deep fried tofu, mini sticky rice wrap with meat, spring rolls, beef balls, BBQ pork buns, they just all kept on coming with no rest for the weary. The people working here either didn't want this group of people hungry, or wanted to feed us quick so we would have the decency to finish our meal and get out in time so they can have their mid-break before the dinner rush. I don't see the latter as a problem, as we were hungry, and it's good to get food fast, piping hot, and fresh as I'm not one to liking to wasting time at a restaurant, especially at lunch when I have the whole day ahead of me. They charge 50 cents per head for a tea fee here during dim sum, that's about the average, but don't go out of your way finding those restaurants that have 'free tea' during dim sum, this place should not be avoided as it is one of the better places in the city. I was here a few months ago and compared to yesterday, the sizes of things have changed....... they got bigger. We had one friend who just arrived from Hong Kong, and was amazed at the sheer volume of the 'har gow' that hit the table. If you have ever been to dim sum, then you know the size of a tea cup at these places, the har gow was that size, and there were 4 in the bamboo steamer. The beef meat balls were the size of my fist, and they had 3 of them, the stuff here was what you would see from a budget dim sum joint trying to trick people to coming here because of value, but not due to quality. This place was still the same place as I remembered, yet the sizes increased, rare thing to happen, usually it means the end of restaurant (well in my book) when they go bigger, but this place will survive with the good food I have known. The place has a good sized private parking lot, but around the area there is a ton of parking here, all free, so don't be worried. The place is not that big, if your coming in a bigger group, it would be advised for you to phone first and get a reservation so that your not left waiting long (and then writing a negative review cause your dumb butt just walked in here expecting stuff!). They have dim sum, dinner, and late night, and it sounds like they have the other meals covered well in quality as well.

I visited Pelican Seafood Restaurant last weekend because the bf and I were craving dim sum! We thought of going to sun sui wah but then we both know the wait will be insane on a Sunday afternoon so we went to Pelican Seafood Restaurant on Victoria and Hastings. Restaurant: Pelican Seafood Restaurant Cuisine: Chinese Dim Sum Price: Approx $30 for 6 plates on average Address: 1895 East Hastings St Vancouver, BC My english translations of these things aren't the best because I'm actually from HongKong so please forgive me and my standards for dim sum is quite high... so I may be doing a bit more critiquing than positives! We ordered siu mai , ha gao (shrimp dumplings), Ja Leung (Chinese donut with rice layer), Lai wong bao (duck egg yolk with custard bun), sin jok guen , and the Rice pot with chicken (not shown in photo). I'm not a fan of siu mai so I didnt' really try it but from the looks of it, it looked a bit too big for it to be the authentic and good quality siu mai that I've had before. The essence of ha gao is the skin of it. The thinner and clear it is, the better its suppose to be because really who wants to just eat the rice layer on top? I found that the ha gao at this restaurant is a bit too thick for my liking but the shrimp itself is pretty good! (though I must say its shrimp paste with shrimp bits in it! Not 100% shrimp). The was by far my favorite there! I could taste the duck egg yolk in there and the custard was not too runny and not too thick which was good. The sin jok guen on the other hand was quite a disappointment. There was a lot of pork in there that it didn't feel like a sin jok guen anymore. It felt more like a bean curd roll with a lot of pork in it. The rice pot with chicken was standard Can't go wrong and the rice is good too! It was actually made in the rice pot and not transferred on. Would've been better if there was a bit of the burnt rice on the bottom of the pot though.

seafood congee. a bit on the runny side.

While riding the 135 bus a few months back, I looked out the window and saw a group of elderly Chinese people heading into this restaurant around noon. And you know when the elderly people go here to party it up at lunch, it's got to be worth a try. So, despite the fact that there is no dim sum discount, we strolled here in last week (behind a large group of elderly Chinese people who were also taking the bus there) and were quickly seated amongst the busy diners. Husband and I stared hungrily at the menu sheet, not sure which options to tick off. In fact, we probably waited 20 minutes before submitting it just to see what all the other tables were being served. The steamed shrimp paste on tofu was the clear winner of the lunch. We thought it'd be a small dish, but it came out so much larger than we were expecting (the shrimp paste was actually a giant shrimp ball on top). The sesame ball dessert was the runner up, only because I love me some black sesame paste - I could eat a whole can full of that stuff, and then get sick, and then eat some more if it was available. We also had the shrimp stuffed eggplant, which was a pretty popular dish. The siu mai was not as good as I was expecting (I've been spoiled by Western Lake), but the shrimp rice rolls were decent. The service was good, they didn't rush us out despite the fact that we were done and just chatting for quite some time. Overall it's a pretty good place with a decent price ($36 for the two of us, incl tip). I'll come back when I have a craving for the shrimp & tofu dish again!

I don't know what is all means, other than "DELICIOUS."

Pelican Seafood was the recommendation we got when we asked a couple of Westin employees for THEIR dim sum recommendations...not where they'd send the white people staying at the Westin. It was awesome and I'd totally go back, but my first trip to Pelican taught me a lesson: Vancouver dim sum is bigger than San Francisco dim sum. See, we didn't know that going in so we accidentally ordered enough food for five people. The dim sum I've had in California tends to be three or four pieces of bite-sized dumplings per order. I knew we ordered more than we could probably eat, but I had NO IDEA each order was going to come out with dumplings three times the size of the ones in CA. My boyfriend gave up early but the thought of all those delicious shrimp dumplings going to waste HURT MY SOUL so I did my best to pack in as much as possible but alas, it was not meant to be...so if you happened to be at Pelican Seafood that day and saw two wasteful, gluttonous Americans, we didn't mean it. It was an accident. We were plenty embarrassed.

Finally got to try their dim sum. Quality is there, but it's pretty pricey at $4.75 to $6 per item. Food is fresh, and though some purists may not like it, I really like how the food is much fresher than the old school way of serving on carts.

(Clockwise from the top): steamed rice rolls wrapped with Chinese donuts, fried taro buns, black sesame balls.

With about 9-10 people per table, we were treated to what felt like at least ten courses. There wasn't much time for photos, as conversation and catching up naturally took precedence. The standouts were the seafood fried rice and the green onion lobster and crab stir-fry -- rich, comforting, and generously flavoured, the kind of dishes that quietly anchor a long meal. It was a busy holiday weekend, and the restaurant was packed. Our original 7:00 p.m. reservation was delayed until 8:00 p.m., leaving many of us waiting outside in the cold. Once seated, the pacing felt off, with dishes arriving out of sequence, which gave the meal an oddly disjointed rhythm. A small apology or update from the staff would have been welcome, but none came. Overall, the food was very tasty, and I would consider returning -- particularly to explore more of their seafood offerings.

So mum wanted to show her appreciation for being her chauffeur taking her around to the doctors…read more She took me out for dimsum and with it being in Richmond there is a plethora of choices. She wanted to go to Kirin. Plenty of parking in the mall. Hostess greeted and seated us promptly. Restaurant was busy but not crazy. This was at 10am on a Thursday. Waiters were attentive. Usual table service was in place. Took our order and food came out at acceptable pace. When we were done, they politely boxed up the leftovers and we paid our bill. So service was on point. The food we ordered came out hot. The staples that I order to test was hargow, suimai and pai gwut(spareribs). All 3 dishes in general were good.....the hargow could have used an extra minute or 2 in the steamer. The suimai was very good. I tasted every ingredient in this dish. Usually it is just a complete mix and you can't discern the different flavors. They tried something different with the cheongfun by adding pieces of Chinese donut to the roll. I personally think it didn't add much to the dish, taste or texture wise. I did like the pea shoots with shrimp. I think it is a good combo. All in all a good dimsum. I also noticed they did not charge us a tea service. The cost of the food is comparable with other restaurants at this level. Yes come on a date or impress business clients/boss or family celebrations.

I have many Chinese friends in Vancouver, and my last visit to Kirin Richmond was in July 2024…read more This time, it was my birthday, and my friends insisted on treating me to Kirin Richmond once again. On a typical Sunday evening, the restaurant is usually fully occupied, but my friend had thoughtfully made a reservation a week in advance, so our table for five was ready upon arrival. As always, the restaurant was clean and well maintained, with good airflow thanks to the wide-open front entrance facing the parkade. The front desk receptionist greeted us cordially, and we were escorted to a cozy table in a comfortable location -- not too close to the washrooms, which I appreciated. Our meal began with the Kirin Special Assorted Cold Appetizer, followed by Crab Meat, Dried Scallops, and Fish Maw Soup. The soup arrived piping hot and was delicious, with a generous portion that could easily have served eight people. We also enjoyed Pea Tips Braised with Bean Curd and Assorted Mushrooms in Consommé, Marinated Free-Range Crispy Skin Chicken, Fillet of Cod Sautéed with Seasonal Vegetables, and Live Crab in Consommé with Ginger and Green Onion, served with E-fu Noodles. Overall, the quality and taste of every entrée were excellent. Service was top-notch -- tea and hot water were refilled constantly, bones and used plates were replaced promptly, and the servers were friendly and engaging throughout the evening. My friend and his family have apparently been regulars at this location for over two decades, which likely contributed to the exceptional attentiveness we received. However, one aspect of the experience genuinely disturbed me. All servers, including the captains, continued to wear masks at all times. While this practice was understandable two years ago, now -- five years after the onset of the pandemic, with COVID-19 managed similarly to other seasonal respiratory illnesses -- the continued universal masking in a fine-dining environment feels unnecessary and detracts from the overall guest experience. Fine dining, in my view as an avid foodie, is built on human connection, hospitality, and personal interaction. Masks create a more impersonal, almost clinical atmosphere. In a well-ventilated space like this, the environmental risk does not seem to justify the visual and social trade-off. Rather than providing reassurance, the persistent masking may unintentionally signal that the environment is unsafe or that management is out of step with current provincial health guidelines, where masking is now a personal choice rather than a mandate. Final verdict: Food & Service: 5/5 Ambience: 2/5 Overall: 3/5 -- as the current aesthetic feels more like a relic of 2020 than a leader in 2026 hospitality.

Once we sat down and were handed the full menu, though, I had a brief moment of panic. The menu is huuuge and varied, plus none of the items I had mentally planned on ordering were on there. We pivoted and ordered pork siu mai, congee, look fun noodles, and a few steamed buns (they're especially known for those). The congee, noodles, and siu mai were all fine--very standard, not particularly memorable. In fairness, they weren't what I came for in the first place, so that probably shaped my expectations. The real standouts were the pork asado siopao and the chicken deluxe (bola bola). Both have Filipino roots, and the siopao especially brought a comforting sense of familiarity--soft, fluffy, and filled with that sweet-savory pork that felt like home. Those alone made the visit worthwhile. They actually have quite a few other Filipino influenced items like hopia and puto which was surprising. Ironically, it was only after we left that I noticed the sign on the window highlighting their most popular items--exactly what first-timers should probably stick to. I had ordered a few pastries to go with the intention of trying them later... and then completely forgot about them, which I'm still a little sad about. Overall, it was a good visit with a clear lesson learned: go in with a game plan and order the hits. It's a beloved Vancouver institution for a reason, and I'd definitely recommend stopping by--just know it's cash only and do a little pre-order research so you can make the most of it. I'd give it more like a 3.5 vs a 4 star, but I'm already planning a redo focused purely on the classics.

As a high end restaurant, the food quality was below average. However, what truly disappointed me was the poor service. Even though the restaurant was not busy, the dishes were served very slowly. The first 2 dishes came out fast, but the later 2 dishes came out after 45 min. When we asked for additional rice and water, we had to wait an unusually long time. Throughout the meal, we felt neglected. It was hard not to feel that the level of service was noticeably indifferent, possibly because we did not order any high-priced seafood or premium dishes. For a restaurant at this price point, the service was simply unacceptable. Overall, it was a very disappointing experience. I would not return and would not recommend it.

Came here for a Chinese wedding reception and the whole place was reserved for us…read more The food was a set menu and everything on it was yummy and well prepared. I like the way they portioned it and served each of us. They did not skimp out on the ingredients, such as if they say whole abalone, it really is. They definitely served the best seafood. The dessert also was amazing with the brown sugar cake and tapioca pudding. The only reason 1 star was missing was that parking was not that easy and service was mostly good. At times, some staff were not was attentive such as: they took the chopsticks away, but you still needed them. Still, Kirin is solid for it's dim sum and seafood!
