Chicken Pad Thai, or somethin
Ed L.

I've known Chinese food in Honolulu, but I guess it's a different world out there when you spot a Pei Wei Asian Diner in some random airport kiosk when you're laid over on a random day. It was pretty nice to have an alternative to the fast food nation out there at our nation's airports. I happened to be laid over for a flight to Pittsburgh on a random Friday afternoon, flying in from Seattle that morning and definitely needed some form of sustainable form of nourishment. I walked towards my gate in Terminal C and decided to try Pei Wei Asian Diner just because it's not something I'd typically get while traveling, but it was probably the better choice between the fast food options within the airport terminal. The only part I did like was the fact that they have a limited menu and that they made your order special when you order it. Only problem with that is, it can take up to 20 minutes for your order to be ready and waiting for you. It can be a drag especially when your flight is boarding and you're waiting for your food to cook. Apparently, that's how it was with me, with your typical airport food situation, finding lunch (or dinner) while waiting to board on your flight. The wait was a little terrible, but at the end of the day, what can you do really. I ended up getting a noodle dish, which ended up being Chicken Pad Thai. Pei Wei Asian Diner is a peculiar brand, especially when there are plenty of Asian fusion and regular authentic Chinese fare to choose from on a daily basis. They specialize in noodle bowls and rice bowls in particular, so it was expected that they have that at the airport locations when they're known for it. This particular Pei Wei Asian Diner is located at the Terminal C corridor of the Minneapolis-St Paul international airport, as mentioned before. You can get a decent meal here with a round of choice for around $10. The menu is proudly displayed above the kitchen, so you know what you want before approaching the counter to order. They accept major credit cards, which at the airport, that's what 99% of the traveling public do use. They accept cash as well. Too bad you can't come here on a whim, unless you're boarding a flight to get out of Minneapolis-St Paul, but there are other locations to get your Pei Wei fix on. I kind of like this place, just because it reminds me of home back in Honolulu. Service here could be described as average, just because is fast food service at the airport. Wow the food here is pretty decent and delicious, I would have had better add a full-service Chinese seafood restaurants or maybe even Thai food, since I picked up pad Thai that day for lunch. I must've picked up chicken pad Thai, and it took about 20 minutes for me to get food. It was slower than your usual fast food fare, but what can you do when they're making it hot and perfect for you and your stomach? The lines can get long here, but I'm sure the wait is worth it, depending on what you are having. For me, it was a nice stop for lunch before jet setting to Pittsburgh from MSP. Airport food is a dime a dozen, but you can get decent Asian cuisine here, given the options you have in the terminal. I don't love it, but it sure was something to have. The food is tasty, but could be better. Would I recommend this place? Sure, better than other fast food places in MSP airport. While the chicken pad Thai was alright, tasty, delicious, and decent enough, I've had better elsewhere. 3.75 stars for the meal. 3.0 stars for the service. Waiting for it sucks. Support local! B-

Mooshy filling in the pork egg rolls
Carmela S.

I opted to come here for a quick bite and I was in the mood for some lo mein and egg rolls. The line was long and the guy who took mine and a few other people's orders disappeared. The next guy who came started taking orders and just setting food on the counter so we had to walk up and find the number on it and call it out ourselves to find the customer it belonged to. I started to feel like I was working there when my buzzer went off and I think he finally realized maybe he should do his job. Not sure why you hand out buzzers and then don't use them. When he handed me my food I had to ask for my drink and then soy sauce while he pointed at the container on the counter which was empty. I ordered the chicken lo mein and two pork egg rolls. The lo mein was flavorless, had a pool of water half filling the container, no bean sprouts, no shiitake mushrooms, extremely dry and flavorless chicken and was just god awful to be honest. The only thing good about it was the portion size but, that didn't matter too much since I tossed it after a few bites. The egg rolls were supposed to be pork filled but, I am actually sure it was mystery meat in there because it was mooshy, flavorless and definitely microwaved. The meat looked to be the consistency of dog food and the only thing that even helped this was soy sauce and the sauce that came with it. I realize airport food isn't that great but, I figured how can you mess up this place and for $15.00 I expected a little bit better.

Your MSP Airport location needs someone from corporate to come in and clean house. Serious. Walk in and yell "everyone working here, GTFOH". The employees are incompetent aholes who are shouting at customers how long the wait times are despite It not being real busy. I ordered 20 mins ago and still no food. If you don't want to work then hang up your apron, clock out and go the f**k home. Don't come to work and treat the customers like garbage because you don't want to do your job! Good grief!

a sign for the restaurant

The food was overpriced and not that good, the table was dirty and When I asked the manager for a napkin to wipe it with, he gave me a wet dishrag he had just wrung out in the sink, but did not bother getting off his butt to go out and wipe the table for me. The most offensive m part about my visit is that a maintenance worker emptying the trash slammed through the kitchen door and hit me in the shoulder. The manager, Lucas, was neither concerned more apologetic about this event, simply stating that the worker was not an employee of this restaurant chain and that I would have to take it up with the police if I wanted to file a complaint. His level of rudeness was unmitigated and I honestly think he should be fired for his lack of professionalism and rude manner. This is the worst customer service I have ever received from any fast food restaurant, and well below the standards I would expect from a restaurant that is associated with PF Changs.

Yum!

I'm amazed this place doesn't have better ratings. Does have airport restaurant prices but the value was above what we expected. Hot, fresh and fast! Friendly staff. Thank you!!!

No price, why.

One of the best Asian restaurants in terminal 1 MSP. Since everything is made onsite and doesn't sit under heat lamps, it is a bit more fresh and appetizing. The prices are a little higher but I think it's worth it for satisfaction. The meat seems of better quality too. They need to start labeling their cooler items though.

The absolutely worst food I've ever had. One bite and I tossed it in the garbage. Never again. So gross.

It was our first experience at a Hot Pot spot, so the server explained the menu and took our drink order. He also informed us where we could find the sauce bar (near the entrance) if we wanted sauces. Good. We ordered and received the Hot Pot bases and all of the toppings relatively quickly. The server turned on the bbq pit thing in the center of the table once the proteins arrived. Great! The table ordered Original, Miso, Kimchi (best favor), and Tom Thai. Most of the flavors were bland at best, except the Kimichi, which was too spicy for most of the table but it was tasty! Bc I was sharing a pot with someone that can't tolerate spicy, I didn't get that base. We tried the soup bases. Meh... Everyone added proteins and veggies to their soups. 6 out of 7 people were disappointed with the hot pots. The common complaint was "this doesn't have flavor." We had two 10 years that enjoyed watching the squid tentacles curl in the soup but not the soup, specifically bc it was bland. This was true for most of us at the table. The beef, chicken and pork all had a mild fishy taste but lacked beef, chicken, or pork flavor. I cooked the protein on the little table grill with chopsticks (we weren't provided with tongs) but again, no flavor. I went to the sauce bar for the table (I found the tongs there). We were told about the sauce bar but not about the tongs, which made my personal experience laborious bc I was one of two people decent with chopsticks at our table. Anyways, sauce bar. Got sauces. Sauces didn't help cover the fish taste. Nor did the sauce help the already cooked protein taste good. The ambiance was smoky, probably due to the grills on the table but of our guests had to leave bc the smoke gave him a headache. The started off nicely but as the meal progressed the server never came to refill drinks or inquire about our meal. He didn't provide recommendations to get the best experience and he didn't provide serving utensils. All in all, I don't recommend. I would like a refund but based on the lack of serve (especially knowing this was our first experience at a Hot Pot spot), I didn't feel comfortable saying anything and I didn't feel like being upset. We just decided to not return and leave a review. Passive, yes, but the experience remained underwhelming not overwhelming. ALSO, you get ice cream bars at the end of your meal! They didn't tell us that! But I saw so many other guests eating them and we were still hungry, I asked if they were included in our PREMIUM DINNER. Ice cream was included. No one told us until we asked. We spent close to $300 dollars for this meal and we received subpar serve and subpar fishy food. I don't recommend.

The sad thing is that people on Yelp haven't really made a dent into these yet as I came here and noticed that probably only three or four of the 30 or 40 food places in this massive Market have even been put on Yelp yet. I've now put them all on Yelp and will be working my way through them each time I visit Saint Paul until I have put up pix of various dishes at each one. But if you live around here and you come here more regularly than I do, what's your excuse? Give all of these places a try! Put them on the map! Figure out which ones are the true hidden gems! The first time I tried it, my husband picked up our order. He waited quite a while for it to be ready, but it was clearly understaffed, and we aren't the type of people to complain. Despite the fact that we didn't raise any concerns, we later received a call from the manager acknowledging that service had been slow and that she had noticed him waiting for an extended period of time. She offered us a $5 credit for our next visit. That kind of unprompted gesture reflects good customer service, and we genuinely appreciated the effort. We ordered a few different wing flavors and I also tried the Rose Ddeok-Bokki (none of which I took photos of). My husband and I agreed that the chicken itself was just okay, though he did note that he liked something about the batter used for the breading. Given the price, we had higher expectations--it's fairly expensive for a relatively small amount of chicken. The Rose Ddeok-Bokki, however, was very rich and flavorful. It was my first time trying tteokbokki, and I wasn't prepared for how fishy the flavor was. I thought it was really good at first, but it became a bit overwhelming the more I ate. More recently, I decided to try their standard Ddeok-Bokki, which is less creamy and has more of a spicy kick. I ordered it without the added cheese this time, which was the right choice. My palate was more prepared for the fishy flavor, and I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. That said, it is fairly spicy, so I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't enjoy heat. There is another version of this dish on the menu that is apparently much spicier, placing this one in the middle of their spice scale. I did find it became overwhelming toward the end, but that was more due to the spice level than the flavor itself. Overall, I'd give it a 3/5. It's something I'd order again when I'm craving it, but when it comes to chicken, I have other go-to spots in mind.
