A while ago while we were building our restaurant, the owner answered the phone and helped us with a piece we needed but one they didn't carry. He went above and beyond to guide me to another store that would have it. Today I went in with a project in mind with little research or preparation and Dylan M. greeted and helped me with everything I needed (without having to look for help). I live a few blocks from this hardware store, and also the cost of items are a little more expensive than the big box stores. I still like to support the small business. There is always someone to help you find something if you walk into the store you will be asked five times by five different people if they could help you find something. Update part 2. I received a response from the owner about the key cutting machine and how they cannot do car keys since the dealerships use chips and what not. I have my own blank key that needed to be cut. The owner said that they need special tools, which is just not true in this case. The local locksmith downtown was able to cut my key with the exact same machine ACE uses. No special training or equipment needed. But, I find this practice of not cutting a personal key just a money grab. I took my business elsewhere and the key was cut with no problems. I added 1 more star since the owner did respond but with an explanation that simply is not true. read more

They have everything at this store. I was looking for Truffle flavored BBQ sauce and it is so hard to find and I found it here along with a bunch of other BBQ sauce and dry rub options. They even have the pile to fry a Turkey. You can get keys made by a real person, not a machine, and they have a knife sharpening machine which offers one free knife sharpening (the knife sharpening is a machine, not a person). They have Christmas decorations, Sponge Daddys, candles, screws and nails, gourmet chocolate and small boxes of Lemonheads. Even with all this stolid the store is nice and the staff are friendly. I don't know what it is about Ace Hardware, but some of their locations have the most friendly and helpful staff that I've ever encountered (at any store!), and its consistent - every single time I go in. I was in the Benicia location just recently for my first time and it reminded me of the Walnut Creek store, which is absolutely my favorite for customer service. Benicia has the same level of enthusiasm that I was hoping for. Their employees totally made me feel welcomed (with a greeting when I entered); valued (the gentleman that helped me - wish I could remember his name - Robert? - didn't laugh at my dumb questions or comments when he helped me find a door sweep for my front door - and explained to me reasons I might not want certain types of this product as opposed to ones that would be better for an outside-accessing door); and also appreciated (I had a sincere thank you from the cashiers when I left (receipt says Krish but there were two of them together). I was in and out of the store in less than 5 minutes with the item I needed. I almost brought a pie home too, but I wasn't going straight home and I didn't want it to defrost in the car (the frozen pies are out of this world, and they're actually a couple of dollars less at this location than they are in Walnut Creek). If you've never tried one of their bake-at-home frozen fruit pies, take my advice and pick your fave fruit, bake it according to the instructions you can find online, (egg wash and all), and be ready to sing these same praises. Theyre really, really good! Which I guess goes right along the Ace theme of setting the customer service standard very high, and then exceeding it every visit. read more

If I could give a -10 star I would. My elderly black mother went into this establishment to buy some batteries with a coupon that Ace Hardware sent her. She had the batteries in hand, asked a sales associate a question, put the batteries down and walked away putting her coupon in her pocket. With her being the only black person in the store, the assistant manager then told her to take the batteries out of her pocket because she stole them. She asked to speak to the store manager Josh who promised to call her back, several hours later, with no response, I called and spoke with Josh who said the store manager was on vacation and he emailed him. I told him racially profiling the only elderly black woman and accusing her of stealing is not an email but a phone call. He assured me he talked to everyone at the store and he looked at the footage and emailed the owner. I advised him he had an hour to get back to her before I would take additional steps....Here is part of the additional steps I am taking. I would never recommend this place to any one of color. They are not for the community of Benicia, my mom is an entrepreneur in the city and this is how she is treated. While on vacation, the owner did call her (the next morning) and tell her he would be out of town for 2 weeks and when he gets back he needs to review the cameras and talk to the associates, BUT THE MATH ISNT MATHING BECAUSE DIDNT JOSH DO THE SAME LEG WORK???? He spoke of how she is a great employee but negated the fact that she intentionally picked out the only black person in the store to accuse before she even left the store. In this day and age, you would think it would be different but this has truly caused my mom emotional damages, embarrassment, now she's scared to go into ACE hardwares in fear of being accused of stealing. This clearly is not a concern for the store owner, the store manager or the assistant manager. She's been a faith ACE hardware shopper for years and because of a few racist individuals, we will never patronize them again. I hope everyone reading this will feel the same way we do. read more

Love this place. They have EVERYTHING and truly serve as the "General Store" for Benicia. Staff are always helpful and friendly and will be honest when they tell you that they don't have an item but another store does OR letting you know that certain stock will be going on sale soon. Truly looking out for the customer there. I went to a big box hardware store recently for supplies to hookup my new fridges water line. Big box store told us we needed a kit with about 11 pieces in it (which turned out didn't work AT ALL). Went to Ace, asked one employee and got the ONE singular coupling we actually needed. Interesting claim: Promoted as the "oldest business" in the city of Benicia, roots beginning in nearby Crockett, CA. Very well-equipped and orderly general hardware store, deceptively larger inside than seen outside. Workers generally friendly and ready to assist. Garden section? Check. I was in the store today to get some moulding and was very impressed by the service. Chris went out of his way to make sure I was 100% pleased with the mouldings I chose. It took some time but he was gracious and never complained. He made sure it was all done right. He also did perfect cutting with the saw and made a good recommendation, gathered other items for me. Hubby and I had to come in a get a couple things and I was pleasantly surprised with the customer service. The hose nozzle is just the worst, I have purchased numerous of them and finally gave up and purchase a different brand. The nozzels are poorly made and begin to leak quite quickly...waste of money. I am a septuagenarian. I was recently in Benicia's Ace hardware and I needed to buy a package of small wrenches that costed $39. Unfortunately, the package was under lock and key because, "the nearby middle school children have been coming in stealing magnets". Being small in stature I must appear at least 60 years younger than I am. Yay! The employees refused to give me the package of wrenches. Instead they offered to take them directly to the cashier. The first employee took the package to a cashier without telling me which cashier so, of course, I went to the wrong cashier who had no clue who had the wrenches. Frustrated I then asked one of the managers/supervisors to help me. She unlocked a second set of wrenches. Again, rather than give me the package she accompanied me to a cashier. While I refused to play the race card, I was certainly demeaned but I still purchased the wrenches out of necessity. read more

They have a great selection of them as well as a very good selection of small building supplies, plumbing, electrical and everything else a good hardware store should have. They are convenient as the building supplies and the other area hardware are 7 to 10 miles away. I arrived exactly at 6 pm and the supervising manager, Jose, basically slammed the door in my face and said they were closed. I said I knew exactly what I needed and where it was in the store but he gave me such attitude and refused to make a small exception to let me grab what I needed. If you're like most people, you work for a living. By the time you get off work, decide to tackle that leaking faucet that kept you up all night and head over to Petrotti Ace Hardware its 6pm and they've closed the doors in your face. Some people think the days of the 1940s where stores close at sundown due to no electricity and whatnot are long gone. Not true of Petrotti ace! I cant tell you how many times I've had to drive to the next town over because this place doesn't care one bit about the customer and their needs. One modern thing about petrotti ace however is their prices! If you cant wait to get rid of your hard earned money at nearly 3 times the going rate for many if not most items here, look no further. The greed train rolls long and deep here. I can get a 2x4 at home depot for 3 bucks but here itll cost ya 10. I'd be ashamed of fleecing the town the way this family owned business has for decades but some folks have zero shame. I'll say one things for sure, many people including me cant wait for this place to close so we can get a fair priced and decent operating hours hardware store in place. I have been to this store many times and have always been able to find help. This evening I thought I should finally leave a review because of the customer service. I came in, in a bit of a panic because I was failing as a first time plumber. I had attempted to replace a fill valve but the flex connector broke and I thought I might not ever flush the toilet again! I turned off the water and grabbed what parts I could and brought them down. Sierra was already helping someone when I was in the plumbing aisle and I knew they were only open for a little bit longer but she didn't hesitate at all when I asked for help after she was done with the other customer. She knew what she was talking about and helped show me what I would need to complete the project. Very knowledgeable, very helpful, and I left feeling satisfied and ready to get this toilet flushing again. This store does not enforce proper social distancing protocols or sanitary practices. Even if they tried - it is actually impossible because the cashiers can't stand far back due to the store layout. They should be shut down. Mark my words: this place will end up infecting half of Benicia because the owner is too greedy to close the store down. BUT what if they need essential items you ask??? The reality is that most people are buying unessential items (paint, home improvement, BBQ, furniture) and not coming in for emergencies based on what I have seen on my past (emergency) trips. I love ACE Hardware. Upon entering ACE in Benicia, at least one employee will greet you and ask if you need help. It's not like I need to be greeted -- it's just really nice. Once you're actually in the store, the Red Vest People are everywhere, offering to help you find everything from angle iron to ruffled petunias. My husband routinely asks me to pick up some bizarre hardware store item that I've never heard of and can barely pronouce. Every time the RVPs know exactly what I'm talking about and they actually escort me to the item.
