The view here is great, as well as the service. Jeremy did s great job of taking care of us and was very personable. I also liked that we were able to share a tasting, as some places won't allow that. When you visit multiple wineries in a day, it gets to be too much for one person! The only part of the experience I didn't care for was that as soon as you walked in, you were greeted at the door by someone telling you your tasting options and then paying right there. I prefer to visit wineries where you can stroll in and have time to take in the ambiance and enjoy the tastings before being bombarded for payment. But that's just my personal preference. Their wines weren't my favorite of the day but they weren't terrible either. Overall, I wouldn't be opposed to returning again, however, I'd prefer to explore some other options in the area on my next visit. read more

Avoid this winery like the plague. The service is awful. They are totally unfriendly. They also advertise that they are open until 5pm, but we saw them turning away patrons at 4:20pm. They should advertise their hours as "open until 4pm". We are Californians, visiting friends in Texas, and we have loved our stay here. We have been here several times. The views are relaxing and beautiful. Staff is friendly, the wines are nice. We prefer the reds at this location. It can get loud with bachelorette parties , be patient the wines are worth the background noise. Or better yet, get a glass and retire to the lawn and enjoy the views and wine. read more

My wife and I decided to stop in here on our way back in to Fredericksburg after a Saturday of wine tastings. We had heard good things considering we liked dry wines. Our first issue was with the hostess asking about gossip from the places we had visited through the day. She was very clingy and would not leave my wife alone, making comments through our tasting because we were directly behind her. Our server, sorry can't remember his name, greeted us and then went straight to business. Poured our wines and left, no history of the winery, wines, or the owners like most places we had been to. After our second pour we were more than ready to get out of there. Felt more like an inconvenience than a paying customer. During our recent winery tour, I knew we had to make a stop at Pedernales because I've been in love with their Texas Tempranillo for quite some time. Getting to enjoy it on their spacious shady patio overlooking rolling hills with live music in the background was picturesque. They didn't have a food truck on a Saturday, which would've been nice. I'm aware that you can bring your own food to most wineries, but my group was coming from near and far and had no time to arrange for cooler packing. Also, I feel like there's kind of a theme in Fredericksburg wineries - the employees don't necessarily feel the need to be extra friendly, smiley, speedy, or helpful. The same goes for Pedernales. It's not bad service exactly, which makes it tricky to describe. Just more like there's so many freaking people visiting on a Saturday that they sort of get tired of smiling. Maybe their cheeks start to hurt or something... In all seriousness, it's not enough to ruin your experience by any means, just enough to kind of make you feel like you're inconveniencing someone even though you're paying $35+ for a bottle of wine. I'd come back on my next trip for sure, but would definitely stay even longer with food truck offerings and a few friendlier faces behind the bar. read more

We ventured over to this winery on New Years weekend during our little honeymoon. The winery itself is probably the prettiest in the area, really as beautiful as Becker, and it was tasty tasty tasty. In my list of Vineyards, Wineries, Cellars, etc this place is not going to go very high. During our little weekend vineyard tour this place was the most expensive for tasting by over double what we paid at other places. Their wine-tasting here is $12.95 and they literally provide you with exactly one sip per glass. Very stingy. They have 9 wines that you try for the tasting. The wines themselves were kinda eh. There were a couple that I thought were okay, but no better then a $7-8 bottle of wine and they had them listed for a lot more then that. The gal behind the counter had 0 personality. She didn't even try to engage with us more then to pour the next glass and say what type of wine we were drinking. There was a guy with a ponytail who seemed a bit more social, but he was dealing with other peeps. The wine counter is very small and it was very packed. Kinda odd having people ordering over your shoulder. The one redeeming factor a nice guy came over and gave us a couple bottles of water from his truck for our two pups that were tied up outside. However, I'm not sure if he was a patron or if he worked there. read more

This was our very first visit to any wine tasting venue in the Fredericksburg area, and we are just hoping that not every place is like this. We were not greeted when we entered. We walked around not really knowing what to do. No one attempted to help us. Once we decided to just stand at the bar, it took forever to get someone to ask us what we wanted. Our servers switched on us because the first one was not serving us in a timely fashion. Keep in mind there were not that many people there and a good amount of servers behind the bar. The second server was rude, did not talk to us, did not even really make eye contact, and did not even explain any of the wines to us. We just really felt unwelcome. Other people were offered oyster crackers and to have their glasses wrapped and put in a bag while we had to ask for these things after waiting awhile. I was very disappointed having come here first as a relative had recommended the place. The wine seemed bitter and the whole experience was unenjoyable. This is an updated review. My original one is at the end..... When I went to Perdernales Cellars the first weekend in March, the tasting I had could not have been more impersonable. I did not get the name of the server, but he provided no information about the wines or the winery. All he did was pour the wine for us, and take our money. This will probably be the last time that I will be back to Pedernales Cellars. There are plenty of other wineries to go in the Hill Country that offer a better experience. Pedernales Cellars has more wine choices since I was last there. Furthermore, they have been included in several best of Texas wines list. But my favorite thing there is the seasonal Glog they offer at the holidays. read more

I decided to read a few other reviews to figure out if my experience was isolated or not. I have realized that it was not isolated. The only positive about this place is the outside area for lounging and the live music singer who was decent. The service was terrible. They were not that busy and they just do not even acknowledge my presence while I stood at the bar just waiting. When who I assume was the manager came to see what the hold up was, the Waiter who was closest to me had the audacity to say that she was helping me when she clearly has not even said hello for the 10 minutes I have been there. The manager ended up helping me. I would suggest they fire all of their staff and start fresh because service SUCKED! I will not be returning here or telling anyone to go here. read more

First of all, Pedernales gets a bonus shoutout for being one of the few wineries open on Easter. I get that some people may not like that out of principle or morals or whatnot, but as one of the many people visiting during the holiday weekend and looking to taste some wine, I sure appreciated it. Now, I'm sorry to burst anyone's bubble, but you're not likely to find a cab, merlot, pinot, chardonnay, or the like in the hill country that's going to blow your socks off. You need to go a decent ways west for that, so to focus on what the hill country does well, I suggest honing in on the tempranillo, voignier, and muscato varietals. Pedernales has a very nicely balanced and drinkable tempranillo that my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed, and we also found their Family Reserve (2008, a blend of many varietals) to be very nice red. Their voignier was refreshing and not at all dry, but also not overly sweet. They have a gorgeous property with a beautiful view - so you're handsomely rewarded for enduring the somewhat long detour off 290. I feel like their tasting is a little on the pricey side, but it's not outrageous. 10 tastings for $12.95 that includes a cute souvenir glass. Typically, I believe most of the Fredericksburg area tastings are right around $1 per taste, so it's not highway robbery or anything, especially considering you get a glass. read more

Wow, I must have really come on an off day. I guess we made the mistake of coming here on Valentine's Day and the place was packed. Other wineries, however, were also very busy but they were somehow able to make accommodations. Of the three wineries we went to that day, this one had the most expensive tasting and the wine was underwhelming. I don't know how it is possible but one wine even had a "fishy" taste. Weird. So the worst thing was the service. Once the lady knew we were tasting, she just handed us two glasses and didn't even tell us what was in it. The whole time we felt very rushed and she would stand there and wait for me to finish my taste so she could pour the next one. Then, we got to listen to the staff complain about how busy it was and how that might be great for the owners but not for them. Overall, we felt very unwelcome, the price was too high, and the wine wasn't that great. I would give one star but I must admit that the deck was really nice and I could see how on a slower day it wouldn't be so bad. I won't be going back however. read more

As we kept touring wineries along 290, I came to the conclusion that there were some places that were serious about their wine and others that just wanted to get you drunk. Count Pedernales in with the "serious about wine" camp. The staff knows wine, loves wine, and wants to share it all with you. If you want to learn a little about soil and a lot about what you're tasting as you sip, soak it all in here because they're more than happy to teach you about what you're drinking and what it pairs well with. The views are striking. The wine isn't cheap, but you get what you pay for. The Tempranillo in particular is totally worth it. We weren't able to get into the reserve tasting (a sit-down sommelier led tasting) because it was booked solid but we got fabulous attention from the staff in the main tasting room. Put this on your short list of places to visit. read more

We waited for 20 minutes for a testing of their reverse and the white hair lady and the gentleman behind the bar ignored us and never even gave us the time of day. Pedernales Cellars isn't my favorite, but it's a solid option on the trail. It's a little off the beaten 290 path, which certainly helps with the ambiance and unobstructed views. The little tasting room certainly was bustling, loud, and a touch chaotic. The tasting service felt a little prefunctory, but at least the wines were described with a few tasting notes. Although we didn't purchase any, the wines are above average, especially for Texas, with an above average price tag. For me, the value ratio wasn't quite there. The biggest thing I appreciate about Perdernales Cellars is their committment to Texas appellation and labeling honesty. For that sirs, I tip my hat to you. read more

I dismissed the slight air of arrogance of the first somm because he knew his stuff and the selections were impecable; however, this most recent trip was disappointing. Our greeting was half-hearted, we were brushed aside, and we could not finish the tasting fast enough to escape the aloof and disinterested manner of our pourer which was sad because the wine was in itself a treat. Ambiance: Lackluster building, great patio and gorgeous view. Quality/Value: This was our first stop on the wine trail and it was pricey because the pours were stingy. Some of the wines tasted a bit strange- is it possible that one of them was corked? It just tasted off. Overall: There was a big tour that just went through and I think they were probably well attended to but we were kind of bored with this place. We bought a bottle of the Viognier - it's really quite different from a traditional with more fruity notes but after we uncorked it at home and had a glass it didn't sit as well as it did in the tasting. The views and property are fantastic. Perched on the slightest hill, the property overlooks miles of wine country and undisturbed space. Glass: best glass of 5 different tastings. You select from thicker, quality glass that is stemmed or stemless (I love stemless :D). Our fantastic tasting guide even demonstrated the durability of the glass. If you talk with your hands as I do, never fear! The glass will teeter, may not even spill, and will await you to reclaim it and drink its delicious contents. Wine: The Pedernales Viogner was by far my favorite of the 5 different tastings I had. It was crisp and bold. I definitely agree that it's the white wine for red drinkers. Mom and I loved the place so much, we are coming back for wildflower season in the spring :D read more

Wow, Pedernales Cellars. Where do I start. This has been a stop with one of the most amazing locations with wide open spaces, that include an amazing view of everything you just drove through. I heard this place had the largest cellar in Texas. Walking around inside I could hear there was definitely a basement underneath (boom, boom, boom, boom as everyone took a step). The wine was very, very, VERY POTENT! Wow. I walked away buzzed off 5 tastes here. That's kind of a big deal. The interior was a little too wide and quite on a Sunday for me. I'm sure this place gets packed on Saturday though. The patio was beautiful. I could totally see myself having a party or wedding here. read more

Favorites were the 07 Cab, 08 Temperanillo, and the 08 Family Reserve. Didn't really find any whites that were to our liking, but the Vino Blanco was ok. Personable wine educator. Though the weather was cold, the tasting room and staff were both warm and inviting. Truly enjoyed the wines. My favorite was the Grenache based rose', light in color and crisp on the palate. We are from Sonoma County California where wine is serious business; Pour it, swirl it, slurp it and move on. He didn't get how to move on! We bought 2 bottles; Tempranillo Reserve ($49.) and the Stonewall Glogg ($19.99). The Glogg port is remarkable. I wish I had some in my hand right now. read more

Of the four wineries in the area we visited recently, this was my favorite. Their tasting room is spacious and very nice. The also have a lovely rambling deck to enjoy a bottle (or two), and the surrounding open land is quite scenic and peaceful. We did a tasting of the reserve wines. Two of the four wines were unavailable. Two were ports. One required the purchase of 5 bottles of the regular wines which we did not taste. Solid Tempranillo base. Great staff. Pricey but very good. I felt a little taken aback by the fact that I tasted unavailable wines. It's like promoting the newer vintages on my dime. Also, requiring the purchase of 5 bottles of their regular wines was weird. Don't do the reserve tasting. I felt ripped off. Update: To be clear, we were not told when we purchased the reserved "Red" tasting that half of the wines were ports. We were also not informed, until the tasting was nearly over, that the reserve wines were generally not available or had other requirements to purchase. read more

Had a great time here. I'm not much of a wine drinker but the wines are awesome. The owner is so nice and the lady pouring the wine for us, Dora, was freaking awesome!!! Even though I am not a wine drinker I really enjoyed going here. They are knowledgeable, I learned more about wine and the area. I will have to go back with my girl friends or my fiance, they are wine drinkers. I did end up buying a seasonal wine, but it was more for marinating fruits for my cobblers, which came out great. I don't think some will think of marinating fruit in a sweet and spiced wine before cooking, but when I tasted the wine I knew what I had to try with it.
