What a beautiful winery out in the Texas Hill Country that's definitely worth the drive. I visited earlier this summer with some friends for a wine tasting that offered a mix of reds and whites. We started with the rosé, which was my personal favorite, followed by a Chardonnay, field blend, Tempranillo, Syrah, and finished with a Cabernet. While I preferred their reds, none of the wines were bad. The staff was super knowledgeable, giving us detailed information about each wine, which originally hails from Washington State. They also mentioned their plans to produce wine here in Texas in the future, which I commend as a big fan of local products. The live music and modern aesthetics really made for a lovely day, and I would definitely make this a regular stop on my way out to Fredericksburg. read more

I just found my new favorite winery in the hill country. We live in austin so it's 1 hour drive, but it was so worth it. It's the best wine tasting experience I have ever had. We had a great time at Covington cellars! We were welcomed with a glass of Field Rose which was very refreshing. The indoor space is quite charming and the vineyards spar across 6 acres. There's also a fair but of patio seating but it was too hot to sit outside. We tried both standard and North of 90 flights and were served mostly reds which was our preference. Many of the wines on the menu were exquisite and I especially liked the Syrah. The owner and server were very knowledgeable about the wines and explained the story behind each bottle in great detail. We also ordered bruschetta from the snacks menu, it was delicious! Will be recommending this winery to friends as one of the stops for their Hill Country tasting adventures. read more

It was an amazing time! We were greeted with a sample of the Rosè which was super refreshing in a hot summer day! We upgraded our tasting and the wine was delicious! We also ordered the spinach artichoke dip and the meatballs. The spinach artichoke dip was delicious! The meatballs had a lot of flavor. A little too much for me however, the hummus and Greek goddess dressing with the cucumber was amazing! You could just order that! Upon our arrival, we were warmly greeted with a glass of Rosé, which was a delightful and refreshing start on a hot day. The winery boasts a stunning view of the Hill Country, adding to the charm of the experience. We were ushered into the VIP room for our tasting, where we chose to sample both the free and signature wine tastings to get a full sense of their offerings. While we enjoyed almost all the wines, the Rosé and Syrah stood out as our favorites. We used to live in Fredericksburg and have visited most of the wineries. Long over due review! Came here to celebrate my birthday - from the moment we arrived we were greeted with a refreshing rose. We had the place to ourselves and really every seat is fantastic. I love the open space feel with couches in the center and tables along the edges with beautiful views. We tried the standard flight along with the upgraded flight and ended up taking home 2 bottles of the rose along with other bottles and wine glasses. We also had the charcuterie board, artichoke dip and bruschetta. Everything was delicious and I wished i had more room in my stomach to fit more! Staff welcomed us to start with a complimentary tasting of the 2020 Josie Rose and it was truly exquisite. Perfectly refreshing for a day nearing 100 with clear skies. Yelp members were invited to experience the standard flight, the 2018 Syrah and Rough House stealing the show. Sommelier, Lauren, poured us the Rio Ronde as well. A vineyard starting in Washington State, brought to Texas as a second location, introduces a unique blend of the two states' soil and terrain. Bonus?! Took my hubby over a weekend to enjoy a sampling and an upgraded tasting for their wines and also enjoyed some of their scratch made food. It is a really lovely location and they are located just outside of Johnson City so it doesn't take that long to get there and it is an easy drive in my opinion. We really enjoyed all of the wines for the most part. I found over the years I drink less red wine because it gives me heartburn. But I did enjoy the Sangiovase blends that they specialize in as well as the lighter red blend. And we took home the very expensive Cabernet Sauvignon bottle, but we're going to save it for a special occasion when we have our 10-year wedding anniversary. I will say that the food we got was all delicious. Very generous. Portions and environment was awesome. We had a very educational wine tasting and showing up at noon was really good because there wasn't too many people there but it did get really crowded within the next hour. So if you do show up I would recommend getting there first thing in the morning so you can have the place to yourself and enjoy the views and just kind of have a nice relaxed afternoon. read more

Our server was very knowledgeable about the wines we were being served and I loved asking all sorts of questions about them and learning more about them. The grounds are beautiful and the inside seating area is incredible! We stopped in here for a tasting and absolutely loved the wines. Most of their grapes are from Columbia Valley, WA (some from the high plains in TX ) so this is a real treat down here in TX. I'd recommend doing the slightly more expensive North of 90 Flight which features all 90+ pt wines. Our favorites were the Ode (type of Sangiovese) and their 100% Cab Franc. The deviled eggs are also unreal, with a spicy bacon jam on top. It pairs great with the reds. read more

If you have not yet stopped in to check out this winery, you will be pleasantly surprised with one of the newest Hill Country wineries located between Johnson City and Hye. Owner's David and Cindy Lawson are no strangers to winemaking. They have been making wines at their Washington location for 20 years. Cindy got her husband David interested in wine and their adventures have taken off since. Cindy is originally from Houston, moved to Seattle for another career before getting into the wine making world and establishing their home in San Antonio a few years ago. Their Texas tasting room location has been opened since May of 2021. Morgan Lee, their very longtime employee, heads up their winemaking facilities. Currently they serve wines sourced from Washington grapes and a couple of Texas wines, as well. The tasting room is elevated up about 1400 feet with a nearly 360-degree view of the surrounding Pedernales Valley and hills of Johnson City on the horizon. Inside the tasting room, it is very spacious with vaulted ceilings and a modern country like décor. Tastings are done by flights. We chose both the mixed flight as well as the reserve flight. First up, was the 2020 Chardonnay. Sourced from Boushey Vineyard of the Yakima Valley AVA, this wine was aged mostly in neutral oak and exhibits a lighter style without a lot of oak in this one. Something everyone should be able to enjoy. Next was the 2020 OG sourced from Olsen Vineyard of the Yakima Valley AVA. Abbreviated for 'Orange Gewurztraminer', this white wine had extended maceration on skins and has characteristics of a muscat like aroma and honeysuckle nose fooling you into thinking you are about to sip something sweet, but this is a very dry wine with a nice touch of melon on the palate. The rest of the tastings were their reds. First was the 2015 Ode. Sourced from two different Washington vineyards, this Sangiovese was aged 3 years in barrel and 2 years in bottle. Call it a Brunello style wine if you'd like, it's beautiful on the nose and palate with both richness and silkiness enticing you back for more. Behold their 2019 Texas Tempranillio! Sourced from the Texas High Plains AVA, this 18-month aged beauty is a good go-to Texas Tempranillio that everyone should be able to enjoy. It's light, with good acids, and has a lovely fruit forward sensation. The MaBelle label has been a favorite of Cindy's for years. Made with 90% Grenache along with additions of Syrah and Cinsault, this GSM style blend is a great light fruity red wine to enjoy with your wood fired pizza. Their 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is something extra special. Sourced from Discovery Vineyard of Washington state not only was it barrel fermented, but barrel aged as well. With 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot added to this red wine, it is very enticing for those fruit forward red wine lovers. It has at least a decade if not two aging potential, so load up and try every few years with this Cab. The 2018 Syrah was sourced from seven different Washington vineyards of Columbia Valley AVA. A favorite of the winemaker Morgan, this bold and robust beast is something to enjoy well with your favorite protein. We moved on to the 2019 Rio Ronde. The name refers to the Rio Grande in Texas as well as Washington's Grande Rondo River. This 50/50 blend of Texas Tempranillo and Washington Syrah grapes has great aromatic fruit forward notes, well balanced texture, and a nice smooth lingering finish. You will enjoy another one of the winemaker's crafty creations called the Rough House. Named after Morgan's naval unit, this 2018 vintage is made with 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Zinfandel. It is fruity and jammy and has a long great finish. The best for last was the 2016 Reserve Cabernet Franc. CF lovers, rejoice, for this red jewel was fermented in tinaja! Sourced from Discovery Vineyard, this flagship wine has an excellent silky feel, just the right amount of tannins, and a lingering happy feel - a 15+ years age worthy Cab Franc! Let's also not forget that their culinary expert, Cheylan Harris, can help you out with some great pairings while you sip your glass of wine as well as make some great dish pairing suggestions as you load up on your case of goodies. The owners plan to introduce more Texas wines to the menu yet continue to feature their Washington wines too. You get a great opportunity to taste the best of both states here and nothing on the list will disappoint you. You might notice on your next visit that some plots near the tasting room have been prepped for a future vineyard. Look for Montepulciano vines for starters being planted this Spring with more to come. With the views, the wine, and great owners, you just might make this place your second wine home.
