AMAZING! 10/10! This little slice of celestial bliss is off the beaten path but absolutely worth discovering! We had a tasting with Taylor and his vibes were immaculate. He gave us backstories to each wine and even went "off script" to let us try some bottles he had open that weren't listed on the menu. Personal favorites were: Stello - for a bright, summer white that's not too sweet, Sinistra - for a dancing, peppery red & Nox (not on current tasting menu) - for a dark red that hugs you by a fireplace. We popped in here based on recommendations from yelp and also one of the servers at another winery. It's a cute little winery, kid friendly, nice outdoor space. The staff are very friendly . I had a sip of a couple of the wines, red and a white. I actually liked the white better, and got a glass. These were not my favorite wines in Fredericksburg, but again I only tried two. And they've also won a lot of awards, so please give them a chance! I'd like to come back and do an actual tasting, we were just out of time. read more

When I made our "hit list" of wineries not to be missed near Fredericksburg, Ab Astris was at the very top of my list. I can easily share that it did not disappoint!! This is a winery you simply must stop at if you're out in the hill country. This place is special. It's got gorgeous vines everywhere with a beautiful patio and shop. We got a charcuterie board to snack on while we did our scheduled tasting appointment. Every single wine they brought us was exceptionally tasty and beautifully bottled, but what really made me happy was the warmth and knowledge of the tasting staff. Our server knew so many stories about each bottle and really shared with us the passion the winemaker put into the work. I absolutely loved the Cab Franc and their signature white. We loved it so much we ended up just joining their wine club so we can keep supporting this small business. It's truly well worth your time to stop in and have a glass or a tasting if you're in the area. We all know Fredericksburg is the heart of Texas Hill Country for wine but I am willing to put my name on it that Ab Astris Winery will most likely be your favorite winery to visit on your trip. Our group of friends had been wine hopping around Fredericksburg and the best was truly saved for last, here! To be honest if we only did Ab Astris the whole time, I would've been more than happy with it. We actually skipped the option of visiting another winery after because we were enjoying ourselves way too much. This winery is family run and operated. The whole gang is involved and even lives on the property. Their passion for wine and hospitality is evident and I almost felt like I was part of the family. With ample parking you'll easily get your group situated and will enter the front doors of the tasting room. The AC is on full blast and it's so open! Can easily hold 75 people with plenty of comfort still inside the tasting room. There is a wide variety of wines and they do offer a wine tasting that goes for $15 a person. Their pours are heavy so you get your money's worth. Since we were a large group think 20+ people they were super sweet and allowed our group to have their tasting to outside. They actually came to us as we sat down and enjoyed the shaded area of all their beautiful trees. You can spend hours on on their shaded patio but I recommend the trees. It's so calming and a nice detachment from reality. I have to say they probably have some of the most beautiful views around in the area. When we had gone they actually had just launched their Rosé and I was living for it. We kept ordering glasses and bottles of it and the group was in love with it. Their whole portfolio honestly was superb and one of the best out in Fredericksburg. Bathrooms are located on the right hand side of the building but their indoors, very well kept, and super clean (a/c as well). Ab Astris is Latin for "stars are aligned" and I wholeheartedly agree they were. I'm planning to bring my parents up for a trip just for this spot. Fun Fact is the winery is on land from Lyndon B Johnson's original estate. read more

Chill winery with a wonderful shaded front porch where you can look out over a pasture full of wildflowers, listen to the birds sing, and shoot the breeze while sipping a quality glass of wine. The location is perfect - just a short drive off of U.S. 290, yet far away from the Saturday madness of the wineries on U.S. 290. On our second visit, the staff immediately recognized us from our first visit. I found that impressive, as I've belonged to some other wine clubs for years where I've never been recognized by any staff member. Get here before the wine limos and bachelorette party groups discover it! (I'm not yet a member of the Ab Astris wine club yet, but considering it). They have grapes growing on the property, but they seem to rely heavily on Texas High Plains grapes, like many other area wineries. My favorite is the Montepulciano, followed by the Tempranillo and Tannat (I'm a red lover, by the way). read more

Went on Friday afternoon 8/11. Had to reschedule the day before and they were very accommodating. We reserved a tasting with small plate pairing ahead of time online and found the pairings to be well paired and the service very friendly and accommodating. The wine is very good. My fiancé and I have done tastings at ~15 wineries in the area and while we find things we like everywhere, the wine at Ab Astris was consistently good across the board, they had several estate wines which for younger vines have good nuanced flavor and structure. For anyone reading negativity in the reviews below, this winery is family owned and boutique, with quality wine that deserves taking the time to reserve ahead of time and not rush through. We found the staff to be friendly and very much the embodiment of a casual Texas hill country mentality. If you're expecting Napa commercial tasting experience ... maybe adjust your expectations. read more

Visited here for a girls' trip, and it was amazing. I've only been to Napa Wineries, and this one is definitely one of my favorites. The wine is amazing, and the setting/atmosphere is so relaxed yet fun! I loved the live music, atmosphere, and we were able to bring in our own food which made us savor our wine and truly enjoy it. We spent a lot of time here and just loved the experience! It is a great place to go if you are looking for a nice variety of wines, amazing service, and lovely people. I've been to Ab Astris several times since they opened some 18 months ago, and I have always enjoyed the ambience, the wine and the service. They are located a few miles back in the country off 290 between Johnson City and Fredericksburg and far enough off the highway that you really don't hear the buzz of traffic, as you do with many of the area's vineyards. That makes for a more pleasant experience sitting outside, and that is complimented by a view of pastures and oak motts on one side and vineyard on the other. My buddy who accompanied me wants to build a house in that setting. Bucolic! The wines are good and improving as their craftsmanship grows. The Tannat has become one of my go-to lighter reds with not much tannin and a pleasant palate all the way through. My friend, a persnickety drinker partial to not much at all, even liked it. The Viognier and Albariño are very credible whites with more body than you'd expect. Service is stellar. I've never been there when the husband and wife owners weren't on scene and up to their elbows serving customers. We were there on a cool, breezy day recently (February in Central Texas being more like April in Minnesota such that I don't mind it), and their smallish patio was pretty full of folks who thought it was actually cold. We were at one end of a picnic table near a propane heater, when the young server came over and, in a very embarrassed and apologetic fashion, asked if we could move to the other side to make way for one of the larger groups who had booked there for a party. Naturally we agreed (me more readily than my more thin-blooded, ex-Californian pal). Out of gratitude, she gave us a complimentary bottle of Viognier. That's how they do it at Ab Astris. Lean in towards the customer and make sure they have good wine and a great experience. read more

Ab Astris is NOT on the wine tasting passport, came here buy accident, it was a decent drive I was a bit upset about the mix up and Texas wineries for not being more transparent about about participating wineries for the Christmas affair. Recently in the area with a girlfriend. Based on the reviews we decided to give this place a try. It was a very cold Sunday. This place is a tad off 290 but worth the effort. A family run winery. Got served by the wine maker and his mother in law. Clean open tasting room. $15 to taste and you get to pick from their list. Outside they have some nice areas to sit. I personally wasn't blown away by anything I tasted but that doesn't mean it isn't worth your time. There are wineries I love and then they have a season I don't like anything. That is the great thing about wine, it is always changing. I love them trying to be a true TX winery by getting their fruit from Texas. Nice people, nice experience, when back in the area we would be back. read more

Ab Astris Winery is one of my new"ish" favorite Texas Hill Country wineries. My Texas winemaking friends have been telling me to try this spot out for a while now. They were accurate in their recommendation. The wine here is well structured and good. This is a family-owned establishment. They source grapes from their estate and other Texas vineyards. Their tasting room is beautiful and away from the noise of the 290. The staff is typically members of the family. Their passion for Ab Astris is infections. They are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. On the weekends it is common to find great live music on their outdoor oak tree-shaded patio. The older woman behind the bar (the wine stewards apparant mother) was quite rude. She made a comment on my shoes that was just odd & clearly driven from some insecure place. The dogs that were allowed inside were very poorly behaved - one nearly bit a lady who walked by & also freaked out when another dog showed up. These types of dogs shouldn't be allowed right next to the tasting counter. This was only in the span of 5 minutes we were inside before choosing outdoors as the only peaceful place to drink our wine. Decent wine, atmosphere decidedly less so. It's so modern yet quaint inside with a beautiful view of the vineyards (you can walk to them and take pics too). Looking for something special in the Hill Country? Ab Astris Winery is not only a beautiful setting with some fantastic 100% Texas wines, but now, they offer a stellar food pairing experience! This is not your usual wine-and-cheese sort of tasting. At $70 a person, this is definitely an elevated experience. Each of the 5 wines served is expertly paired with a dish hand-made with care by the resident Sommelier, Mitchell. The foods are sourced locally and the menu changes seasonally to ensure freshness. The menu this past weekend was the start of their summer pairings and had a decidedly Italian flare. Our first course was a light and complex Antipasto board with cheese, salami, artichoke, petite peppers and more. It paired nicely with their light and complex rose called Aurora, which is a blend of Cinsault, Mourvedre and Montepulciano. While this is not a traditional rose blend, the grapes play well together and yield a Provencal style with layers of fruit and herb flavors. Next came the 'Primi' course. This house made bread with Mitchell's own sourdough starter, was thinly sliced, toasted and topped with an onion and tomato jam and fresh baby tomatoes. The dish was decidedly rustic and its acidity played well with the Apricus Rose, which is a blend of Montepuliciano, Petite Sirah and Tannat. Again this rose is not a traditional blend of grapes, but all sourced from the younger vines on the estate. The finished wine is quite savory and herbaceous, not what you may expect from a rose. I highly recommend the wine as a fun tool to play with food pairings. The complexity will do well with many tomato-based foods, which can sometimes be tough for pairing. Our 'Insalata' course was the most beautiful salad I've seen and tasted in quite some time. I should have gotten a pic! This was a bowl of toasted grains and seeds with local peas, colorful baby carrots, all mixed with a slightly spicy tomato aioli and topped with herbs and flowers. It was like a party in my mouth! The crunchy toasted grains balanced well with the delicate herbs and the spice balanced things out. The Stello white blend is a dry wine of Roussanne, Clairette Blanche, Picpoul Blanc, and Marsanne. A traditional French Rhone Blend includes 4 grapes that are proving to grow well in Texas and I'm excited to follow the progress of the estate Clairette Blanche, as it is the first to be planted here in our state. Now we move to our main course, which proved that every course just got even better than the one before. A large meatball of bison and wild boar, set atop a ricotta parmesan polenta and topped with a simple tomato sauce. I love traditional Italian food and this meatball was outstanding, juicy and flavorful. The 2017 Montepuliciano is a fantastic traditional Italian wine that traditionally goes well with a tomato based dish. These grapes were sourced from Reddy Vineyards in the Texas High Plains and produces some of my favorite red wines in our state. The wine is drinking well today, but also shows the ability to age for another 5 years. I highly recommend picking up a few bottles. It'll be a perfect pairing with an easy frozen pepperoni pizza at home! And we finished our lunch with a light dessert of Almond Olive Oil Cake and fresh Blackberries paired with the 2016 Maximus red blend. Often times people think a wine served with dessert needs to be a sweet wine. I disagree, as I think its best to focus on enhancing a flavor of the dessert dish. In this case, the blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Tannat and Petit Verdot is a decidedly dry and bold wine. The delicate cake, which was not very sweet but instead a bit savory, added a light note to the wine and the blackberries brought out the fruit notes of the wine. I will also point out two of my personal favorite Ab Astris wines, which are the Picpoul Blanc and the sparkling Estate Petillant Naturel made from Clairette Blanche...I took two bottles home. After our tasting, I was able to take a moment to walk along the vines with Kristen, as we looked at the progress of this year's crop. The Tannat is looking quite nice with a full canopy and some plump new berries. The tasting experience is by appointment only and there are only 10 people in the intimate setting. That's a big endorsement given we ended up with quite a few white wines and are typically more dry red wine drinkers. Stopped by yesterday for a tasting and stayed to share a bottle of Tempranillo with friends on the patio. They have been open 5 weekends so far, and I was pleasantly surprised. Their location and tasting room are gorgeous, and their wines are of good quality, especially the reds. This is a family business and the people were very sweet and friendly. It is set off of 290 a mile of two in Stonewall, and I appreciate the privacy and peace that allows. I think this place will last and I look forward to visiting again. read more

We stopped here on our 2nd stop. We were just going to get wine by the glass. Their website offered food but when we showed up the man at the hostess stand told us they had sold out. This was barely 1pm. We were asked to sit out in the yard tables as the tables close to the building were for taste testers.
