So I lost my VERY VERY EXPENSIVE glasses in DC and I live in Chicago. I decided to try my neighborhood eye place. I spent the majority of my consultation griping about how I lost my eyeglasses. The woman who worked with me could not have been kinder. And YES, I was being a bit overbearing. I don't have insurance either. She was excellent in not making me feel small as so many can do in the (god awful) healthcare system we are all a part of! Anywhoo, I finally saw the optometrist and she was an ABSOLUTE DELIGHT. She answered every question I had in detail and even graciously smiled as I continued the rant about how I had lost my very very expensive glasses. Moving forward, she and her receptionist/assistant helped me pick some glasses I really liked. They were even willing to put lenses into some frames I purchased elsewhere. In the end, I got some really nice glasses from them. (The cost was slightly less than my others, purchased seven years earlier.) The day after I paid cash for the prescriptions, someone I knew found my glasses in DC. I have gotten over the shock of paying for the new glasses because I feel it was important for my eyesight that I met the Doctor. I like her so much, I told my son to schedule an appointment with her. I love the fact that I don't have to go to an impersonal place to get such a personal service as an eye exam! read more

Dr Patel was nasty to my grandmother who is 101 years. She was impatient and dismissive because my grandmother didn't get her exam from Pearl vision. Although my grandmother didn't get her exam from Dr Patel, she purchased her frames for $700 from Pearle vision. You don't treat senior citizens like that, especially when they spend money in your store. Dr Patel is a very mean person. read more

The doctor's manners could use some work but in a pinch, they will do. If you can get downtown or to the suburbs I highly recommend that.

AN EMAIL I SENT DIRECTLY TO DR. PATEL: Unsure who this email will reach, but I would like to just bring it to your attention that you have a very rude and unfriendly female staff member who is answering your phone and directing patients. She is very impatient, unprofessional and comes across extremely condescending.  I understand it is the end of the year and business is busy, however that does not excuse the terrible customer service that I have experienced when I've merely called to update my insurance and attempt to get an appointment. It is also certainly not the service that I've come to know and appreciate from your office. You and Jeff have always made me feel like family when I've come there. Extremely diligent, professional and patient.  Unfortunately, due to some insurance changes (that your staff member seemed to care less about and offered no other resolution), I won't be able to return there. But even if I could, I would think twice so that I wouldn't have to deal with her. Hopefully, your other customers have a more pleasant experience than I've had these few days when I've been attempting to schedule an appointment and resolve my insurance issues, so that you are able to provide my exam.  I really thought you would like to know who is negatively representing your establishment and I will be sharing this unpleasant experience with Yelp. read more

I want to complain about Dr. Ami Patel (at Pearle Vision on 53rd & Woodlawn)and her fraudulent practices. She KNOWS that the contact lens exam is not covered by most insurance. She does not give this information. Instead, she charges a $50 co-pay when she KNEW IN ADVANCE that the insurance wouldn't cover it! Then, when I came back, she pulled out a voice recording of her asking us if we wanted an eyeglass appointment or contact lens appointment or both. But what she didn't say is: If you choose contacts, then it won't be covered. The fact that she pulled out the recording means that this this is not her first rodeo! She has defrauded many in the past. Bottom line: Dr. Ami Patel has no integrity! I would never recommend her (period) I would give her zero stars if I could! read more

My recent visit to Pearle Vision was unpleasant. I was greeted by a rude staff member who was dismissive of my attempt to get a prescription replacement/repair pair of eye glasses for my elderly father with dementia. She insisted I have a power of attorney (for an eyeglasses prescription??!! WTF!!), that her system wasn't finding him, etc. i could see I was getting nowhere so I left. I returned the following day with everything she had clowned me for not having on me on my prior visit: the broken glasses and a copy of my POA. As I entered, I am pretty certain i saw this staff member run to the back of the store. Her manager, Jeff, who didn't notice or know any of this, greeted me warmly and professionally and resolved everything with ease. My dad had his eyeglasses repaired in less than 10 minutes. Jeff is the reason for the 3 stars. FYI During the ten minutes i sat with Jeff that staff member never came out of the back room. I suspect she was avoiding a confrontation. read more

I had a truly disappointing visit with Ami Patel and her staff. I returned for a routine eye exam for glasses Rx. The appointment was at 4p and the shop was shuttered when I got there at 3:50p. They did rouse when I called from outside in the freezing weather and open to let me in. They then began complaining about how everyone else had cancelled they're appointments, and that the optometrist herself had had to clean the toilets that day. It was weird and unprofessional. In a certain light it would have been a friendly conversation, but it was spoken in such harsh tone and with so much anger, it was kind of frightening. The optometrist didn't request my vaccination card which I had brought with, it's fine I guess. But then she went off on some tangent about how she wouldn't get her kids if she had them vaccinated, right after I had said that my kids were vaccinated. She was blathering on about her judgments on my parenting?? I don't know but I felt really uncomfortable. The eye exam was rushed and I felt pushed to read the letters even though they were blurry. The eye exam fee was $90, ask for her to include a pupil distance she declined and started reading me about how people take advantage of optometrists. The experience was traumatizing, I will never go back to that shop again. read more

Awful experience and I had to go twice because the doctor was running behind and my appointment was cut short because of this. From the insensitive heavyset woman who said my insurance wasn't that good, Dr. Patel having me wait both times although I was on time and the other receptionist telling me the doctor had a patient in the office when she didn't. Never again. They're in need of a customer service overhaul in 2020 read more

Dr. Patel has lost another loyal client. For many years I have supported her business and have overlooked how rude she can be, short, sarcastic and just unprofessional. First, the only time she is friendly is when you are spending thousands of dollars in her store. If you come in and not buy anything, Dr. Patel will ignore you. Be aware of not receiving all the information needed on your RX prescription. She will certainly deny giving you the complete prescription, will ask you if you are buying else where and not give you the information needed as an attempt to prevent you from buying glasses anywhere else. She will not respond to the portal text messages and you're usually forced to call her which can be torture. I referred many people to her and she has treated them poorly as well. Never takes ownership for correcting mistakes with prescriptions and glasses that are ill fitting. Charged my friend an $800 upgrade for their mistake and reprimanded her boyfriend in front of clients for giving a discount. On a positive note, you will have some fly glasses that are VERY EXPENSIVE and Jeff is a breath of fresh air. He is so kind, patient and willing to help. He is the reason people keep coming back and not her. Her staff usually over shadows her lack of customer care but I noticed they NEVER stay employed there long. read more

I do not know where to begin. First let me say that I never write reviews but the service I received from Dr. Patel was so pathetic that I feel compelled to voice my disgust with her on every social forum available. I had an appointment on 12/11/2014. I first visited this location 3 weeks prior, with much better service from Dr. Patel and her staff.. I visited Dr. Patel's location initially because my eyes had been irritated and watery.. She diagnosed me with dry eyes and gave me eye drops and an eye lid cleanser.. My condition improved temporarily and then progres-sively got worse.. I made another appointment with Dr Patel to follow up.. Before the appointment she called me twice inquiring about my insurance. I thought this was strange since she had my insurance info on file from the previous visit three weeks prior. I arrived to my appointment and Dr Patel was sitting at the receptionist desk.. The first thing she says to me is.....not hello or welcome but.."let me have your Blue Cross insurance card".. I was taken aback by her brash behavior but I ignored it and proceeded to offer her my Eye Med Vision insurance card because I assumed she should have been billing them instead. She immediately shouted out to me "that won't work!!!!!"..Again I was taken aback by her unprofessional behavior.. Visibly irritated, I asked, "what do you mean?". She began to explain to me that I had already had a free exam and a second exam would not be covered by a Eye Med and therefore she would be billing Blue Cross and she also added in the fact that I would have to pay a co-pay no matter which card she billed.. I explained to her that the co-pay was not an issue and I only wanted to ensure that she billed the proper insurance company.. At this point she had hounded me about my insurance prior to the appointment, did not greet me upon arrival and tried to argue with me about what both insurances covered and she insinuated that I was somehow worried about a co pay and a free eye exam ( I supposed she assumed I couldn't pay it). In the exam room, she began to inquire about my symptoms. I stated to her that my condition had worsened since the last visit.. I told her that my eyes were itchy , burning and watery. She examined my eyes and immediately said," I see nothing different with your eyes".. At this point I began to get slightly angry with her apparent nonchalant attitude with my condition .. I did not become visibly upset I just started asking more questions.. I informed her that I had a stye on my eyelid that was not there before.. She said, "stye?" What stye?". I pointed to the stye and she said oh that's not a stye.. I said it looks like a pimple its tender to the touch and it's located on my eyelid, if it's not a stye what is it?. Her response.. "I never said it wasn't a stye". At this point I thought I was in the Twilight Zone.. I dismissed her behavior again and then I asked if I should see an Ophthalmologist.. She replied.. " yes there's one down the street you can go to her".. I was thinking to myself I cannot believe this lady is talking to me this way.. I then said that's ok I will find one my own.. She replied.. Oh well since you are acting like you want a second opinion you don't need this prescription and you can have your card back!!. I took my insurance card and walked right out. I will never patronize that sad pathetic excuse for a doctor again.. She is very unprofessional, everything is rushed, she doesn't listen and I agree with the other reviewer who stated that Dr Patel and her staff act as if they are doing you a favor. I am following this review up with a letter to Pearle Vision's corporate office , posts on Facebook and Twitter. If Dr Patel doesn't care about customer service, she will when I'm done complaining. Oh yes I would also like to add that Dr Patel is very condescending and seems to have some pre-conceived notions about minorities because incorrectly assumed that I was worried about price.. She spoke to me like I was some chick from the hood.. She is a total jerk!!! Cassandra Thomas South Loop resident read more

I've been getting eye exams/ glasses/ contact lenses at this Pearle location since I was about 10 years old. Unfortunately, it looks like I won't be doing that anymore, and I'm pretty sad about it. The doctor and staff have changed some time in the last two or three years, and this was my first time going in since the change. I should have known that things weren't going to go well when the staff couldn't find my file. My contact lens exam with Dr. Patel was fine, though it felt slightly rushed. She gave me two different pairs of trial contacts at the end and instructed me to decide which brand and prescription I preferred when I came back in for my follow-up appointment. When I went back out to the reception desk to book my next appointment, I initially asked for the next Monday. The receptionist was about to go ahead and book the appointment when I realized that was Labor Day, and I told her to move it to Tuesday. It wasn't until then that the receptionist realized that the office was supposed to be closed on Labor Day, and that they still had appointments scheduled for that day. Not a good sign. I came back in the next Tuesday, wearing my glasses, since you usually have to take contacts out for eye exams anyway, only to be rather rudely asked by the receptionist if I was wearing the contacts I had chosen. I replied no, but that I had decided which ones I liked. She carried on rather rudely, "You were supposed wear them for two hours before coming in, and to come in wearing them so the doctor can check how they fit on your eyes." I said that no one had told me that, to which she responded, "Yes, she did. The doctor tells everyone." I'm pretty good at following doctors' instructions, especially if they're given explicitly, and I know that no one told me that. I even went back and read the Contact Lens Fitting consent form that they had had me sign, and it doesn't say that anywhere. The receptionist told me to wait while she spoke to the doctor. While I was waiting to see if my situation could be resolved, a man came in with a Pearle Vision bag that contained boxes of contact lenses. He said that he thought there was something wrong with the contacts he received. It turned out that his prescription was -4.00, but that the lenses the office had ordered and given to him were +4.00. At this point, it was clear to me that this staff was doing some seriously sloppy work. When the receptionist came back, she told me that I would have to come back, and would I like to reschedule. After all the shoddy work that I had witnessed in my very short time spent in this office, I told her no, that I would just reschedule somewhere else. I realize that this was a rash decision on my part, especially since I had already paid for the exam on my last visit, but I was just at my breaking point for dealing with ineptitude. It's really unfortunate that I won't be able to support a local business anymore, but if I have to choose between proximity to my home and quality service, I'm going to choose quality service. read more

TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE and very nasty attitudes by both the staff and the Doctor. Seems as though they feel you are doing them a favor by being there. Visited in the past and had the same issue. I tried to give it another chance, because of the convenience factor, with hopes that maybe my past experience was just a fluke. No amount of convenience however is worth the aggravation that I feel when dealing with this business. I would rather stumble around blind in the dark then give them another penny of my hard earned money. There are way too many other places to go that understand the importance of respect and good customer service . I called to make an appointment for my son. The insurance he has is actually a medical insurance company that contracts through VSP, however his card does not say anything about VSP on it so I was completely unaware. There is a number on the card for providers to call to verify the insurance information. I called this location twice explaining that I wanted to make an appointment with my son I told him who my insurance was and they both told me that I needed to call the insurance company to find out more information. I asked them if they would call the number on the insurance card that said provider should call this number to verify the insurance information and was told that they couldn't call every customers insurance company to verify their coverage and that I needed to call them back with all the information and then they would be able to help me. I ended up going to a different location. I did call the insurance company and was able to get the information I needed, but I did ask them if this information was accessible to providers and she said that it was completely accessible to them and that the verification usually takes less than five minutes. Their business must be booming, why else would they risk losing 3 long term clients. If you have issues here, I highly suggest the Evergreen Park location. They're very willing to work with you and answered all of my questions. read more

While living in Chicago it was pretty hard to get a follow up appointment with the doctor. Which left me unable to finalize my contact prescription. I feel I've been scammed out of my money. I would never recommend this place to anyone. read more

I have so much anxiety around getting my vision checked that I usually put it off forever, which is why I hadn't gotten a new prescription in four years. So glad I came here! This is the best experience I've ever had at an optometrist. Dr. Patel was quick, efficient, and easy. The staff was friendly and didn't try to sell me on anything (can't say that for some of the other places I've gone). Highly recommend! read more

After my frustrating experience with Pearle, Dr. Patel reached out to me (both through Yelp and directly) to apologize for what happened. She went above and beyond in her offer to make things right, including agreeing to stay late with me one night after work so that I wouldn't be forced to delay the appointment - so I gave them another shot. And glad I did, honestly. My experience with them since returning has been nothing but pleasant, and they followed through on every aspect in precisely the manner in which they said they would. I ended up with a very different kind of glasses than I'm used to (progressives rather than static reading glasses) and they are making a world of difference for me! Every business has their glitches, but not every business cares enough to make things right for their customers. And the upcoming remodel sounds like an exciting face lift! So all in all, yea, I probably will be back. read more

Ended up calling this place last minute since I was having eye irritation all week. The staff was really nice on the phone, & warm & welcoming once I arrived. Being able to be seen the same day was a huge plus & Dr. Patel was friendly & very helpful! Dr. Patel told me that she wouldn't give me my eye glass prescription unless I had purchased glasses at the store. I still paid the price for contact and eye glass exam, but now needing to find somewhere to perform another eye exam so I could receive my eye glass prescription. Thankfully the eye doctor I then found told me what Dr. Patel had done was highly illegal and called the office and informed them what they had done to me was illegal and to release my medical information to me immediately. Soon we received my eye glass and contact prescriptions, and was left with a feeling that Dr. Patel takes advantage of her patients and must have some sort of deal with the store for eye glasses she manages to trick people into buying so they can receive what is already due to them..their medical information. read more

This store is very disorganized. Every appointment I've made I've had to wait 15-20 minutes after my appointment time to be helped, while other customers can just walk in and receive help right away. Dr. Patel ordered contacts for me but after only a few days of wearing them they began to get little rips and tears in them. I informed the office of this but they in turn scolded me for the contacts ripping. I told them I did not like the brand of contacts that I was given because they were very thin. (My sister went to another Pearle Vision and received a different brand of contacts they are more thick and have never torn.) I asked the office if I would be able to order this new brand in my prescription and they told me no. I refuse to be stuck with a brand of contacts I don't like and that I know will rip easily. To conclude I paid for the contacts ahead of time and never received my 6 months supply. Wish I would've read the reviews and not have come to this store. The Pearle Vision on Jeffrey is way better. read more

I do not know where to begin. The unprofessional, rude, careless and condescending service I received from Dr. Patel is appealing. I went in for an eye exam and she wad rude right from the beginning. We did the exam and then discussed contact options. She told me I would need a trial pair of contacts first. I told her I had been wearing the same brand of contacts for years so I did not understand why I needed a trial. She asked me to get my previous rx faxed over to confirm and I did. She had me do a few more tests and noticed I could not see the smaller letters and numbers. She stated that this was because I was over 40. She continued to be focused on my age as opposed to listening to me and doing what Is best for my eyes. If she would have asked I would have told her that I have ever been able to see those small lines since I was born with a horrible stigmatism. Fast forward. I receive contacts and try them on and they are not clear. I call the office and let hem know and follow the protocol of them texting me and requesting photos. I sent photos and we begin corresponding by text. I asked if they could call because she stated that there are notes that Dr. Patel wanted a trial. The receptionist called and I told her that was not the case. She put me on hold and then Dr. Patel picks up the phone telling me that is what happened. She was very rude and aggressive in her tone so I interrupted her and asked if her explanation was the solution. She yelled can I finish? I let her finish. She tells me she told me that I needed bifocals and if I ordered the contacts I would not be able to see..... I told her that is not true and is incorrect and this is the FIRST time she has said anything about bifocals. I told her if she would have said I would not be able to see then why would I order contacts for $286 for a 6 month supply knowing I would not be able to see. That makes no sense at all. Save your time, money and dignity by never going to this place. Dr. Patel is the worst. One star is not even enough. read more

I only came in to get frames and lenses because I got a comprehensive exam elsewhere. After the understandable COVID-19 screening, they ask if I have my prescription with me (I mean obviously I do if I'm coming in to purchase glasses, right? And even if I didn't, you have the tools to call and ask for it, as do I) I also informed them that my mother (who they assumed was my sister) had to stay with me because I had just gotten my eyes dilated and could not read yet and bright lights still hurt (not to mention I'm on her insurance AND she's paying). Dr. Patel made sure she let us know multiple times she was the owner of this location and it was a franchise (okay, and?) and the original girl who was helping us seemed to be upset she had to work (we were the only ones in the store at the time) I picked a few frames and while we were waiting, many people started coming in and the store is so small the girl asked my mom to leave (remember I said I could not read?) and my mom refused considering she was my eyes and was the one paying (mind you, we were in there first and we both have our masks on). Shortly after, I settle on some frames and the girl who had been working on me said she did not know how to use the system for inputting insurance for my frames and lenses so she could not finish my transaction (so, the main part of her job?). Enter, the only reason we made a purchase in the store. I wish I got this man's name, because he was so nice and helpful. Clearly Dr. Patel and her other female staff member do not know how to handle a busy floor. He helped finish my glasses buying process and if he was not working there, that day, there would not have been a purchase made. There are plenty of Pearle Visions and Luxxotica has plenty of other companies under them I could shop at. I was there for convenience, and she is lucky she has one good worker that got her a sale. read more

HORRIBLE customer service!!! I went in to get my frames adjusted and they said that it would be a 40 minute wait, or I could come back after 40 minutes to have them adjusted. I chose the latter option and returned after 40 minutes. Upon my return, the lady at the front desk said that I had to wait for longer and that there was no guarantee that I would be served that day!! Her justification was that frame adjustments are a free service for their store, so they wouldn't serve me until every last paying customer had been addressed (apparently, even people who were behind me in the queue!). When I asked her whether it would be better for me to return first thing in the morning, she said that there would be no guarantee of when I would be served! Well, my response to this AWFUL Pearl Vision location is this: I wasn't expecting a free adjustment and I would have been willing to pay for the adjustment. Now that I've seen how much you carelessly waste people's time, I will NEVER be a paying customer of yours and you'll never get a dime out me for any kind of service. Based on the other customer reviews on this site, it looks like my sentiment is shared by other people as well. Anyone who values their time should avoid this place ENTIRELY! If only zero stars were an option on Yelp. This store is definitely a place that would deserve a zero rating. read more

If you value your time and sanity, please avoid this Pearle location. First off, last year, they LOST my contact lens prescription, and I had to get a second eye exam in less than a year. And I had to do quite a bit of persuading/complaining before they agreed comp this extra exam. Then this year, they billed my insurance incorrectly charging me an extra $20. When I explained the mistake (while still in the office), I was told there was nothing they could do as this is the amount my insurance pays even though my insurance card clearly states my co-pays and coverage. She didn't even offer to contact the insurance company to double-check?! And this is all after I called a week in advance of my appointment to confirm that I had pre-authorization for my exam. Ugh! So I called the insurance company myself from the parking lot. They explained the mistake that the eye center made right away and instructed me to go back inside. I had to hand my cell phone to the receptionist so that the insurance agent could explain to her how to bill for a contact lens fitting...step-by-step!!! Finally, I was refunded my money without an apology. Then a month goes by without receiving a call that the contacts I ordered were in. So I called to find out the status and learn that they were NEVER ordered. After all of that, they seriously never ordered them! It's as though you have to laugh to keep from crying with this place. After I get my contacts, if I ever do, I'm never going back. Yes the location is convenient but I'd rather pay out-of-pocket for eye care somewhere else where the staff is not completely incompetent. read more

I walked out. The lady at the front desk was rude and confrontational for no apparent reason. I went there after work, very tired - and instead of service with a smile, I felt like I was on the defensive for not having the insurance information at the tip of my tongue. I just didn't need this in my day. I also realized that I'd seen a different eye care place further up 53rd... After being sharply interrupted for the second time, there was a long pause, and I asked for my insurance card back and walked out of the door. I've never felt so justified in walking out of a business. Reading other reviews, I find that my reaction is shared. read more

It was very bad service. I had an appointment at 4, but did not get called until 20 min later. I see things less clear and need a stronger prescription. However, the Dr. said my prescription did not change after just 30 sec. Literally just 30 sec of check, she said there is no problem. And the check she did was very careless and pushing. Then I explained the uncomfortable parts of my eyes but the Dr. insists and did not truly listen. The total time of eye exam lasts for 5 min! ONLY 5 min for an exam which should be 20-30 min. Alright the statement that prescription did not change does not seem so bad to me. Then I asked for my prescription. Surprisingly, there is no Pupillary Distance (PD) listed on the prescription! PD is required for a new pair of glasses, and they did not give me. They said it is because my prescription does not change so I won't buy glasses from them. I thought the independent doctor is required by LAW to give full prescription including PD. The medical part was done carelessly. The people were cold, and they just try to get you buy glasses, and if you do not need to, they give you the worst they can offer. read more

Pearle Vision Hyde Park is like the Cheers of optometrists. You truly feel like you're amongst friends when you are there. They are also professional and great at what they do! I got so used to having subpar vision I was shocked to finally get a perfect prescription and be able to SEE again! It's something you don't even know you're missing out and honestly it's almost life changing. They also made us realize our young son who had been prescribed glasses that he always complained made things "worse" didn't actually need glasses at all! They could've easily sold us a new pair of glasses for him, but they care about doing the job right, not making money off of things people don't need. This review is based on the customer care and service provided by Dr. Patel and her staff. I had an appointment on 7/15. I was greeted by the Doctor when I walked in and she told me she already ran my vision insurance and proceeded to give me a general breakdown of the costs. I arrived about 15 min early to get a chance to look at some frames and I'm assuming she used that time to take a look at my current lenses. Dr. Patel has a very warm and welcoming demeanor, and this was further evidenced during the exam. She was patient and reassuring throughout. At the end, she broke down the issues with my eyes in a "down to Earth" kind of way, which was appreciated. I learned a lot about my eyes that I didn't know before so shes instantly better than any Optometrist I've visited in my adult years. While I didn't have too much of an interaction with her staff, the gentlemen who worked there seemed cool and laid back, which just added to the overall positive experience for me. I would definitely make a return trip and would recommend this location to anyone looking for a comprehensive eye exam or new glasses. read more

Rude. I've gone numerous times thinking it would change but it's the same customer service every time. The manager/owner is sitting down rolling his eyes as you come in and the lady at the front desk is doing the same. There's no greeting no assistance offered and no goodbye. Won't be back get over yourselves. read more

I am a stickler for customer service and found that Dr Patel and her staff provided an exceptional experience. I loved that she had staple frames such as Ray Ban but also more eclectic pairs for those who want more fashion in this accessory. The eye exam was thorough and Dr Patel took the time to understand my eye care needs. I will be back! read more

When I needed my glasses adjusted, I initially went to a different eye place in Hyde Park. They bent my glasses so bad that my vision was messed up and I had headaches. I went to Pearl Vision to get them fixed. They explained why my vision was off and fixed them so they fit perfectly. Then I fell while rollerblading and totally busted up those glasses. I had to get new ones. I went back to Pearl Vision because of the great service I had received before. I have never liked so many frames in one place before. Usually, I just settle for what looks best. At Pearl Vision, I liked two so well that I couldn't decide between them. Because of a BOGO offer, I got both. The service was excellent. Helpful but not crowding. The time to get the glasses is reasonable (7-10 business days, with a holiday in there too). I highly recommend this store. read more
