Declan is the man! After taking my laptop to the Genius Bar at Apple, and being told I needed to buy new computer, Declan fixed it seamlessly. He was honest and fair and I am so happy I found this place. A couple weeks later, I had issues with my ipad's battery. I thought I'd have to buy a new one, but I again took it to Declan. He explained to me that he would do his best, but that he might break the screen because of the way the battery was situated in the device. (He'd never broken a screen before, he said, but he warned me that I could be his first). He left the decision up to me as to whether or not to risk it. I really appreciated his honesty and humility. This is a long review to write, so please bear with my ramblings. Let me start by saying that these guys were great, very up front, willing to talk and help, and are extremely reasonable. I did not have a bad experience here at Computer & Tablet Repair Center. The short review, if you don't really know anything about computers and have an issue that needs fixing, this place is golden. You'll get taken care of in good time and won't pay more than you should. Now, the long review, I should note that troubleshooting a computer problem is not an exact science. It can be a task just finding out what the exact issue is first before you can move on to determining one of multiple possible causes. I have an A+ certification, which means I can reasonably find required parts, build a computer, and do some troubleshooting of my own to fix most common problems. So, when the media server I built began to lose connection to my disk drives, I started simple and decided to replace the SATA cables to start; which brought me here. I asked if they had any to sell, and the owner rooted around for one and gave it to me for free. These cables are cheap to buy, usually coming free with any new drive or motherboard you purchase, but I still expect to pay $3-$6 for one on its own. So, to have them toss it at me for nothing was great and put them on my radar for anything I may need in the future. Replacing the cable didn't work and looking at my system logs showed that drives were randomly changing throughput speeds and then disappearing from being seen by the BIOS upon restart. I figured it was one of three things; bad disk drives (which was unlikely because with three drives it should only be a single one failing), a bad power supply (also unlikely, as it was brand new and over rated for what the computer needed), or a bad motherboard (hoping against this as it was the most expensive prospect). Came back here and talked to Declan, very nice guy. Up front with the price, it was about $50 to diagnose and that money goes to the cost of repairs if necessary. Feeling it was fair, I told them all the steps I had taken, gave him my notes, and left it in their good hands. A few days later they called me up and said that they couldn't find what the issue was, but everything seemed up and okay. At this point, I was a little skeptical, as all it seemed had been done was tightening of the screws and tying of the cords. Taking it home and turning it on, the drives were back, but it all felt like the direction I had pointed them in had been ignored and they got lucky when rebooting. And, sure enough, with nothing actually fixed, the issue resurfaced a day later and I brought it back. This time I was sure it was either the power supply or the motherboard and didn't have the tools or spare parts to determine which. With those specific details given, I left it in their hands once more. This was at the end of October. A few days later, my daughter was born and time to worry about the computer was scarce. But, I did get a call about a month later, towards the end of November, saying that they had narrowed the issue down to either being the power supply or the motherboard. Yes, I was a bit grouchy at this point, but it was low on my list of things to truly worry about with a recovering wife and two kids that needed me; so I let it slide. By the end of December, I called for an update and Declan said they were pretty sure it was the motherboard and asked if I would like it replaced. Again, trying to keep costs low, as it was a cheap server I had built for basic use, I acquiesced under the condition the price of replacement be near $60 to compare with the motherboard I had. After another month, I gave up and swung by to take my computer home. Now, after three months and not much to show for it, many might be grouchy at the situation (and rightly so), but again, they were very fair about the whole thing. All I was charged was the $50 to diagnose the original issue. I now have a direction to go and am already attempting to exchange the old motherboard. As I said before, troubleshooting a complex error is not always easy, I can't really fault them for not readily pinpointing my exact problem in short order. This repair center was still somewhat responsive, honest about their work, and very fair with their charges. I can't be grouchy about that. read more

The guys in here seem to know what's going on, but the shop is a complete disaster. It looks like a mid-west computer nerd's basement with junk everywhere. I went to have my battery repaired and they did the work, but they didn't seem to care about my stuff. They sort of piled it in an area of the shop that wasn't obvious and when I got it back I received the power cord missing the strap that secures it. Not the end of the world, but also not something that needed to happen. They just don't seem to care about the items they take possession of. They are polite, they are responsive, they are kind. It would go a long way to have a shop where the appearance projected a feeling of interest in handling the client's equipment carefully and returning the equipment in the same condition that they had received it. They can get the work done. The price is probably a little high relative to peers. They are nice. Even though all of this is true, your equipment might be handled in a more careful way elsewhere. I went to PC Repair Center because my laptops were very, very slow. I had had an extra 8 gig chip but didn't know if it would work so I took it with me. Within 5 minutes of arriving, tech had used my chip and installed it in my laptop. Then he recommended I install Malwarebytes to detect and get rid of any viruses which he had detected. He had fixed my problem and tried to not charge me. I insisted on paying him. He said no, but I handed him $40. It was easily worth the $40 considering the years of putting up with the aggravation of using my laptops the way they had been. When I got home, I downloaded Malwarebytes to 2 of my laptops and ran the scan. Its now like having 2 new laptops. This truly is the answer to your virus problems and I use the FREE version. I also schedule nightly scans. I can't recommend this software enough. Its free, download it now. read more

After receiving a used laptop purchased from Amazon I couldn't get it to turn on. Rather than send it back immediately, I called PC Repair Center in Encinitas where Declan had helped me with another device earlier. He was totally calm and professional in a naturally friendly way and knowing that I knew nothing about how things work, he gave me a general overview of the possible problem. I left the laptop in his care until the call came telling me it was ready to pick up. What it needed was to be updated in a major way as apparently it had been sitting in a sealed box on a warehouse shelf for a long time. He got everything taken care of and said my "new" budget computer should work well for my art course DVD viewing. These dudes are so nice and go way above and beyond. I find myself asking them all my embarrassing questions that reveal how little I really understand about hardware stuff. They really didn't have to spend time explaining everything I asked to them- but they did. They didn't have to special order me a part I could have ordered myself- but they did! See, if I was left to do this stuff myself I would order the wrong parts, lose screws and plastic parts everywhere, probably get electrocuted, and just screw up everything. Had a home-built high-end gaming PC that was having intermittent boot issues. We had diagnosed it as far as we could, determining it was a hardware issue, but were unable to go any farther without extra components that we didn't have on hand. I was leery of taking it into an unknown PC repair place that didn't know what they were doing once they got past the standard 'virus scan and Windows reinstall' method of 'repair'. Was pleasantly surprised at first phone call where they were able get up to speed easily with the symptoms we were seeing as well as what we had already done to diagnose the problem (which was a lot). Once we took the computer in, they were able to verify our issue right away and find the root of the problem after extensive diagnosis (less than 48 hours). Turns out it was a failing CPU, which isn't that common. They gave us the option of returning the PC as-is and letting us replace the CPU ourselves (since they knew we knew our way around the computer), for a very reasonable diagnostic fee of $49, or to have them order a new CPU and put it in, with the CPU being charged at-cost and the labor being only $20 more than the diagnostic charge we would have been on the hook for if we took it as-is. We decided to have them do the work, and once they got the part in and installed, they ran more diagnostics to make sure it was all good. Quite a bit of work for what was charged. We got the computer back yesterday, and it works as good as new. My son was able to reinstall windows and all his software, and he is back up and running. They also cleaned out 4 years worth of dust. :) They are now on my shortlist of PC repair shops that I can totally trust to do great (and competent) work. Thanks! read more

These guys are great. I took my computer in because it had contracted some kind of virus and most of the apps weren't working. They tried everything they could to fix it but couldn't repair it without re-installing the whole windows system. I have to say it's a bit nerve-racking having this done, because there is so much on our computer that we needed backed up, including all of our quickbooks business software. These guys took care of everything and had all of our stuff back on the computer where it belonged when we picked it up. Not to mention they're friendly, patient and extremely affordable. Sammy was extremely helpful when I brought my new HP laptop in after spilling tea on the keyboard causing several of the keys to do strange things (shift keys backspacing instead of capitalizing letters, etc). He took the keyboard off, cleaned and dried the components, and when he tested it, everything worked as it should. Didn't charge me a thing! I WANT TO GIVE A BIG 5-STAR + RATING TO THE GUYS AT PC REPAIR CENTER!! I lost visibility on my laptop screen last night (suddenly became very, very dim) and also could not get email or log onto the internet. I took my laptop in first thing this morning and within 30 minutes Joe and Sami evaluated the problem and repaired my screen to full brightness by uninstalling the current HD driver and reinstalling the previous old one.....worked like a charm. I also discovered I had somehow gotten into the Airplane Mode without realizing it and that accounted for the loss of email and internet access. Two months ago I had the same sudden low screen light problem appear and ended up taking the laptop to a different PC repair place (Laptops & Beyond) where they kept the PC for three days and also said I needed a whole new screen because of a bad inverter. It cost me over $150. NOTE OF WARNING: Beware of Laptops & Beyond....I found there are many negative Yelp reviews, too late in my case. It turns out that I probably did not even need the new screen since Joe was able to discern that with Lenovo PCs it is important to not allow the automatic updates to include updates to the Intel HD driver or a video or display driver. I was advised to turn off the automatic updates (which the guys helped me do right then and there) and I will be able to choose which updates to allow from now on. Simple fix. Apparently this is an idiosyncratic feature of Lenovos. Joe and Sami were friendly, efficient, knowledgeable, and honest; plus, I almost had to force them to take some money for the repair work. I highly recommend them and will take any and all computer problems to PC Repair Center from now on. They are the best! read more

Over the last 30 years, I've put together 7 or 8 computers from individual components and consider myself reasonably experienced. I guess my age is beginning to show because I just couldn't get my latest "build" working. I finally went for professional help. And these guys are professional! They're easy to talk to, and they listen. We discussed some of the possible problems and the tests that I tried. They impressed me with their knowledge and approach to problem-solving (we're fellow geeks) so I was comfortable leaving my PC with them.
