I had my first visit to the school on Saturday for a cut and relaxer. The relaxer was amazing, may hair is super straight and healthy. The cut is nice also. I loved the price. One caution is that it takes about 2X as long as it would at normal salon HOWEVER, this is to be expected because it is a school. I would highly recommend! I would go here again, but I would not book another early morning appointment. Pros: -I love my cut -It was only $12! -The stylist was very nice and helpful Cons: -I had an 9:30 am Saturday morning appointment. The stylists didn't come upstairs until 9:45 and my session didn't start 10:00. With that and the long time spent cutting (because this is a student), I was there for 2 hours. - I did not like the way that the stylist blowdried and styled my hair. I have a perm and she made it very frizzy. At first I thought I hated the cut, but after working with it myself I realize that I love it, just not the way she styled it. Great basic haircut for dirt cheap. I have long thick coarse hair that I like to keep long. I decided to try Paul Mitchell and I have to say that I was impressed. The girl who cut my hair seemed very excited and happy to have my business. She did a great job and if she had any questions was able to contact her teacher fairly quickly. I went in the middle of the week during the day so they didn't seem too busy. The girl gave me a great blow out...she took her time, but who can argue with that for $12. So I really like the student that cut my hair and she was excellent. This review is more about the staff handling the scheduling. I had initially set up a appointment for Wednesday, however after arriving I was told I could not be seen as I had my 9 yr ok son with me. I was not aware of the policy of not allowing kids on the floor or allowing them to wait in the reception area unless an adult (18 or older) could sit with them. I am in no way upset about this policy just would have been nice for them to advise be before I drove all the way there. So I scheduled a appointment for the next morning (Thursday). Mind you I scheduled a cut and color (at no time did they ask me while I was making my appointment what type of coloring I was wanting. I show up to my appointment the next morning which was when they open first thing. I get checked in to find out that the girl the was scheduled to cut my hair did not show up so they kindly set me up with another very nice young lady. I talk with her about my cut and what I would like to do with my color and she is excited. Then the floor supervisor comes around ask what she will be doing and she explained it to him and he checks my ticket and says "Oh we cannot do that we are too busy and that is a lot of work!" So you will have to reschedule and said you can set it up for Friday (the next day) or Tuesday next week. At this point I am very discouraged and Adobe him I cannot do it next week as I am back at work and this is why I made the appointment yesterday. So I agree to reschedule my color and have her cut my hair. After I am done (she did a fantastic job) I go the the check out and try to reschedule my color for Friday as the floor supervisor offered and was told they had no openings and I would have to do it Next week! I said I cannot do it next week I am back at work and the lady at the front desk say oh sorry, we'll call us if something changes! Really!! This is not how you continue to bring clients back for your students! You should really rethink your scheduling and how you interact with the public. I went in 3 times and talked to 3 different instructors about coloring my hair. I wanted my hair dyed silver grey if possible. first expierence, they dyed my hair dark chocolate brown with highlights. not what I wanted or asked for, returned after 6 weeks, and the color had faded to a brassy reddish, with my grey regrowth. Went in again explained that I wanted my hair dyed a silver grey if possible....the instructor assured me, no problem, this is their field of expertise,blah,blah,blah. So they bleached my hair 2 times, first the regrowth, then the rest of my hair. At this point my hair is now orange and yellow, and I asked her, more than once(the instructor)If she was sure this brassy orange, once the grey dye was applied, would cover and then I would have grey,silver, she kept assuring me "oh sure, no problem,perfect!" Fast forward I have orange, dark brown and light brown, no where near looking grey at all...It is a lighter, brassier version of what I came in with, only now my hair feels like straw, to the tune of $100.00. All she said I'm so sorry, I don't understand why your hair didn't take. This was to be my birthday present to myself, and we were planning to go out for the evening, after 4 hours, the girl that started me HAD to go home, her shift was over, so needless to say, no color no "do" I will never ever go there again, major disappointment. sucks big time! read more

Wheeew!!! I'm gonna try not to curse!!! This place was an absolute waste of 3+ hours out of my LIFE!!! If you are an African American woman with hair in its. NATURAL state...do not go here!! I explained everything to the receptionist upon making my appt. I even asked her to NOTE the things I mentioned and to place me with a student that was suitable in dealing with my type of hair. I mentioned my hair being in its natural state, coily, thick and past my shoulders...in other words (nappy) !! She assured me everything would b ok!! I arrived on time for my appt. Wash, deep condition flat iron with a bun . Everything was great up until the student tried to blow dry out my hair ...she couldn't get my hair straight... Then she called assistance from another girl that was supposed to b combing my hair out ...she was barely touching it. I noticed them having issues so I told them to be aggressive when combing out my hair since its shrank so much ...still couldn't do it ! Next thing i know a dude comes over trying to tell me they cant get my hair straight because its a little glue in my hair!! First of all the girl washed my hair 5x if she didn't get traces of glue out then she needs to be at that school longer anyways . Meanwhile I'm trying to get an explanation why they been working on my head for 3 hours and the back is not even blow dried !! All in all the director came over and made excuses about traces of glue being in my hair and that's why they couldn't service me!! I disagree !! The bottom line is that they do not know how to service hair in its natural state and she should've said that 25 minutes into doing my hair vs. 3 dam hours!!! read more

I want to start this review by saying that I fully understand that this is a school and the students are learning throughout this process. I think the students are great, I have never had an issue with the students. But that's about where my satisfaction ends. I also want to say that I have had amazing experiences with Paul Mitchell schools in the past. I just moved to Phoenix, but for the past 4 years I have been getting my hair done at the PM school in Columbia, SC. In my 4 years there, I never had a negative experience and I never left unhappy with the results. In the 6 months I've been in Phoenix, I've gotten my hair done at PM 3 times. The first time was fine, they didn't mess anything up but I also wasn't amazed by the results like I usually am. The second time was a disaster. They cut my hair about 2 inches shorter than I wanted, which above shoulder level is extremely significant (to the point where I cried when I got in my car), and the color was atrocious. I went in for a fun red/purple color and left more brown than I was when I walked in. I had to return for a re-color, which ended up going really well, which is the only reason that I booked for a third time. I went into PM for a trim and a color at 4:45. My hair's not that long, so I figured this would be possible in the almost 3 hours they had until close. BOY was I wrong. First of all, my student didn't come get me until after 5pm. Frustrating, but whatever. I then told my student that I wanted what they did last time, reds and purples with dimension. I saw the instructor that had designed the color concept for me the last time I was there and so I figured he could design something I would like again. As he talked through it, it sounded great. I was a little skeptical on his idea of red in the front because my hair naturally pulls a little bit of orange whenever I go red, so I wasn't keen on the idea of having that frame my face. But, I was assured by him, a licensed profession, that it would be fine and so we started. My student was friendly throughout but slow, which again, I understand because it is a school. But as 7:10 approached and I had been in the chair for over 2 hours, I was a little frustrated that she came over and told me that wouldn't have time to do the cut, which was really the main reason I went in. Since the school closes at 7:30, they rushed through the rest of my appointment, with two girls yanking at my head from both sides with a blowdryer. When it was dry, I looked up to see two orangish/copperish-brown stripes surrounding my face, completely not blending in to the rest of my head, which is a purplish red. I was forced to pay before I saw the final product and left in complete panic because my hair looks literally awful, and I was just told "well it is a school, so sorry." All in all, I spent almost 3 hours and $65 at the school, all of which was completely wasted as I now have to go get it all redone at another salon. From my experience, I believe that Paul Mitchell schools elsewhere in the country are great, but the school in Phoenix has a lot of work to do to be at the same caliber as them. read more

I was wet all the way down my back after color was rinsed out. the roots were not colored.she was going to ignore it, I told her I would like that fixed. instructor told her the color to mix. she covered the whole head again instead of just the roots. once again, I am wet all the way down the back when she is done. instructor says she will cut my hair for free. she says there is usually a follow up call, tell them the truth and take what ever they offer you. its closing time, receptionist collects the bill, is told not to charge for cut. she charges for cut. I dont have my glasses on so I dont notice until the next morning. I call and am told no refunds. when I insist, I am told accounting will call on Monday. on Wednesday I call again and finally the credit is issued. This place has a lot of hidden issues that needs recognition. First off to anyone wanting to pursue a career in cosmotology really think twice before signing up to this school . This school as a whole is clickish and gets empowered and loves to ruin innocent people's lives. Linda,Scott,and their fake foot soldiers will be fake and smile in your face until you sign on the dotted line of mandatory 40 percent of tuition payout even if they dont like you they will do everything in their power to terminate you dry and steal all your tuition $$$ they have not earned nor deserve from you and then laugh like they are entitled and as if it is funny right in your face, bad experience, and environment, for me and my friends. Don't get your hair done there either because they will chop all your hair off to almost bald like they did to my best friend by so called senior stylist Jessica Sparks and Robert their so called instructor. The owners will just laugh at you to, like they did to my best friend and sent her out with wet hair at night time to and treated her so bad and arrogantly. Just spend the money and get your hair done right, by a real licensed professional and save yourself the hassle and headache of dealing with this school all together. Go to another school. Horrible Experience do not I repeat DO NOT go there. I went in for an Obmbre and I came out with red highlights and greenish/ silver highlights. Never once did anyone apologize or offer to fix my hair for free. They said I could come back within a week and be charged at the Phase 2 price which was I believe $18.00 bowl of color. I paid $98.00 and they made me pay when my hair was wet so I didn't even know what it looked like. I then had to repay someone else to fix my hair. If they would have offered for me to come back in and they would fix it for FREE I would have gone but I refused to give them any more money. If you value your long hair...DO NOT GO HERE UNLESS YOU HAVE SOMEONE WATCHING YOUR BACK...LITERALLY. I have had 2 bad experiences in a row. Earlier this year I went in for a cut/color. The students are supposedly maintaining a file of what they do (color) so I told the student to just do what the last student did since I really liked it. I always get a foil....well she came back and promptly started coloring my hair...but no foils. I was perplexed and mentioned that I had never had my hair colored that way and asked how she was going to incorporate all the colors. I mention this to the student and to the learning leader. No one says...anything. Well, AFTER the fact I find out that there were no prior notes so the student just simply decided to bleached it all one color. It was a shock...but the cut was good and I decided to try out my "new" color. I was just glad the mistake was color that could be corrected and not having my hair cut off. Still, it is a major screw up that had someone acknowledged my questions might have been corrected before I left. So, fast forward to a new visit. I ask to update the color and request only a dusting...maybe 1/4 inch trim of the back. I ended up losing a good 5 inches. Instead of falling near my waist it is now to my shoulder blades. I didn't realize just how bad it was until I got home. While at the school the student did NOT offer me a mirror or show me the cut/back of my hair. She wisked me off to the front...on the way I could feel a difference in the way my hair was NOT falling down my back and I got a quick glance in a mirror....but I was just starting to panic when she got me to the desk to pay. After I got home and saw the gravity of what was gone I cried for hours. I would publish her name, but I threw away her card. But it was the night class. Understanding that it is a school I called to inform the "school" so that the experience could be used as a learning tool...believe me, had I gone to a salon I would have really pitched a fit. Anyway, it is the ability to leave feedback that is sorely lacking. I highly doubt that my call went past the front desk that answered the call. So, yeah times are tough so you can get a decent cut, but if there is a problem....don't expect the staff or school to make you feel like your concerns were heard. There is no feedback opportunity when you leave. Whoever answers the phone isn't very reassurring or helpful. OH....and I even brought a picture, as you are told to do when you know what you want...IGNORED. The learning leader didn't even address the picture or how it would be executed. It will be a good year before it will be close to the length I came in with. I am so devastated and cannot stand to even have my hair down without getting upset. I don't know what in the heck she was thinking back there with those super sharp QUIET scissors. So there you go. That is how the school is prepareing their students. read more

As a freshmen in college, I needed a cheap haircut that looked good. When I scheduled my appointment, everyone was nice and professional. I walked in ten minutes late, apologizing, yet the lady at the front desk said she cancelled my appointment. This was a small inconvience. When my stylist came, she did not even shake my hand. She was friendly and talkative when she was washing my hair, which was pleasant. Going back to the chair, she began cutting my hair. I mentioned several times that I part my hair to the side and that I have wavy hair so she needs to be careful with the cut. Drying my hair was like getting my teeth pulled. It took her over 30 minutes to dry my hair, each time she pulled on a part of my hair, I could feel her pulling it out. There were at least five times throughout my appointment where she said "sorry" or "oops". Those are words that should not be said! Once dry, I was not happy. She did not straighten my hair, leaving it poofy from the blow dryer. I looked at the back and noticed it was not even and there were layers on one side, and none on the other. She had to call over her teacher and her teacher had to "fix" it, then the person above the teacher came over and actually fixed it. During the fixing time, my original stylist was rude and thought that she did nothing wrong. read more

I had my hair done for the first time at this school. I was fortunate enough to have two students Michelle G. And Suzy S. They were absolutely the sweetest! I would follow either one anywhere. They were very professional and friendly and just an enjoyable experience with two wonderful ladies! The only reason I'm only giving 4 stars has absolutely nothing to do with them because they were more like 10 stars but because I wasn't prepared for the salon prices I had to pay for a school. When I called it was a little misleading what the price would be and it jumped from $50 to $150 if Ii had done the recommended services. I got a haircut at Great Clips by a former student and she recommended the school for hair color. I called that day, got in that day. Nina, the instructor, seems to be everywhere, checking on all the students as they work. I had a particularly challenging problem in that I wanted to mask my grey hair and have highlights. The process was time consuming but Dasha, my student stylist, was very gentle and thorough. When I left I was satisfied. As happens sometimes, when I get home I look closer and decide, eh, maybe something could be different. I made another appt., this time with Kaylee (I hope thats spelled right, she has a long braid.) With Nina never far away we put a toner over my hair to soften the overall look, which I was very satisfied with. For this second procedure I was NOT charged. It seems customer satisfaction is very important here and for that I am grateful. This is the place for me, at least while we are in the valley!! read more

On my second trip, Nicki was supposed to be monitoring the student who colored my hair. When they got done, the roots were red, not blonde and when I complained I was told it looked fine. I pulled out a photo of how my hair looked 2 days earlier (date stamped) and then Nicki said I could come back and have it fixed. I had an interview the next morning and it was after 8:30 pm. So, I made a zig zag part in my hair and hoped no one would notice. Would I go back? I would never trust them again. Nicki finally admitted that she chose that color herself to avoid additional chemicals on my hair which would have been needed to make it blonde like the rest of my hair. Incredible that this so called teacher would make a unilateral decision like that without ever consulting the client. What lessons are they teaching there? I feel bad for the young man who was her student. If you don't mind looking ridiculous, try Nicki and her students for a color retouch. Just remember that when they tell you it is just the awful lights in the place, don"t believe them. And, I almost forgot - I had to re-wash my hair when I got home because there was color along my hairline in the back. When I called Nicki and told her this, she denied this was true. I asked her if she really thought I would make that up and call her back. It was only then that she grudgingly said she would talk to the student. read more

After 10 years of going to beauty schools to get my hair done I've never had anything to complain about until now. I was a regular at the Paul Mitchell School Orlando, FL and loved it! I went every three weeks to get my platinum hair touched up. Before moving they recommended I try the Phoenix school because it was supposed to be the best for color. After dragging a friend an hour across town to the academy, we got there and waited an hour because their morning class ran late. After running so late, not once did I ever meet an instructor. Never have I ever gone to a school and not been checked a hundred times by an instructor. It took 5 girls, 4hrs to do a root touch up and a bang trim and I left with platinum hair, and yellowish gold roots, and the sloppiest bangs I've ever seen. All these things could have been prevented if an instructor had been present, and the girls weren't talking about boys and valentines day instead of paying attention to my hair.
