I've been a client of this school for almost 20 years. I have been a client since they were located in Alhambra. I have always been a huge supporter of this school. First of all I scheduled an appointment with them over the phone days before and got a call a few hours before my appointment that it was cancelled because they won't be taking clients that day. So I had to reschedule. And this was not the first time this had happened. Once they cancelled my appointment when I was already at the school. I am deeply disappointed in the level of service they provide. The students are great and most of the services have been good. The school itself has very bad business practices. I was charged for a service I did not receive because the service ran longer than normal and we had no time. I was told the service would be removed from my bill but that was not the case. I don't believe they practice transparent breakdowns for pricing. Usually pricing is something that is discussed at the beginning of the service, this was not the case for me this visit. While they agreed I did not receive the haircut I was charged for, they tried to say I owed them money for extra color they used. And that they would credit me but then charge me if I ever came back for another service. This is unprofessional and not a legal way of doing business. My receipt is proof of purchase and should reflect exactly what services were rendered. They are disorganized and overwhelmed. Frankly, I was disappointed with my experience. The overall level of professionalism was lacking. The biggest issue was communication. There was poor coordination between the stylist, the instructor, and even the front desk staff who asked me to sign forms. It also seemed that they did not understand what I was asking for, even though my communication was very straightforward. The process felt inefficient and disorganized. I understand this is a training school, but customer service and communication should still be a priority from the beginning. Listening carefully to new patrons and making sure everyone is on the same page would greatly improve the experience. I went here for the first time and my experience was not ideal. I went to the Vidal Sassoon school for haircuts for decades and was always pleased with the professionalism and ambiance of the salon. Paul Mitchell School was overall not professional. One student in the salon was telling another worker about getting high during her lunch break and a bunch of students were playing with dice in the salon area. The supervisors had limited involvement overseeing my hair. I got there at 10:15am and didn't leave until close to 5. And even then, the hair color I received was not what I requested. The supervisor said they could correct the hair color on another day, but I would have to pay $12 for the materials. I was also upset because my hair color and cut was initially estimated at $65. When they had me pay, the total was now $113. I was really disappointed that they did not give me a more accurate estimate to begin with. Also, the student doing my hair said she would do an initial cut when the hair was wet and then once styled, would finish it (which she didn't do). The school did not seem organized and definitely did not prioritize the customer. I was never offered water and never even saw a water cooler/ water bottles. I hope that things improve. read more

I actually love coming here. I needed a quick haircut for a last-minute audition, so I thought I'd come in for a trim and cut 2 inches off my hair. In the past, I've had amazing Phase 2 hairdressers. This time I accepted a Phase 1 appointment, and do I regret it. Again, I'd like to point out that I understand she's learning--that's the point of this establishment--but she clearly cut more than 2 inches! I'm devastated because I specifically emphasized that I only wanted 2 inches off, and now I'm looking at what appears to be 4- 6 inches gone. Plus, I asked for layers and curtain bangs. We ran out of time for layers, not that I think I would have trusted her with that anyway after seeing how the initial cut went. But she didn't know how to cut curtain bangs or blow-dry them properly. I had to request at the end for her to blow dry my curtain bangs out instead of in. This review is purely to inform others: proceed with extreme caution when getting a Phase 1 hairdresser, or be very stern about how many inches you want cut from your hair. Better yet, ask to see their supervisor before they start cutting. I feel dramatic for being sad about this, but I honestly can't help it. I work incredibly hard at keeping my hair healthy and long--it takes months, sometimes years, to grow hair to the length I had. Now I'm sitting here fighting back tears because I have an important audition tomorrow and my hair looks nothing like what I wanted. I feel so frustrated and disappointed, especially since I trusted this place with my hair before and had such positive experiences. This setback feels like it's going to affect my confidence going into tomorrow's audition, which makes it even worse. read more

I messaged the Paul Mitchell School on Yelp and said that I was looking to get a cut and color done. The person who I was messaging with on here scheduled my time and quoted me a price for the color and the cut. When I got there and checked in, the person at the front desk said "you're here for color" and I responded "and a cut" and she said "a cut if there's time." Huh? I restated that I was there for cut and color and she said they can never guarantee a cut and that they tell everyone that when they make the appointment. I know they didn't tell me that when I made the appointment. I've attached the screenshots. But here's the thing - I don't care if that's your policy (can't guarantee a cut) - what I care is that I wasn't informed and I wasted my time driving out there for a service I didn't want, instead of finding a place that COULD do what I needed. And the worst part was, the person at the front desk was adamant that I was the one who was wrong, and kept saying she could "check " for me and prove that they indeed told me about this policy. Again, my one star review isn't about their policy. It's about the fact that I was gaslit about it. And then, instead of leaving a Yelp review, I messaged them on Yelp when I got home, to sort it out privately and just explain what went wrong. They read it and never responded. Attending this school was one of the worst experiences I've ever had. While there were a handful of teachers who genuinely cared and tried their best, the staff is very unprofessional and the administration showed no real concern for students. The owners Peggy and Alee are far more focused on money than on education -- piling on costs and making empty promises about what their program would do for our careers. They only showed up when they wanted us to donate our money and time, other than that, they were never around for support. We often felt more like unpaid employees than students. We were put to work every single day under the guise of "simulating a salon experience," but let's be honest, it was just a way for the school to profit off us while failing to provide the proper education we paid for. We were constantly reminded by one of our teachers Judy that salons and barbershops aren't hiring recent graduates with the new state board requirements. This implied that it was going to be hard for us to find jobs in spaces that we desperately wanted to be a part of. Which was literally why we were there. Instead of motivating students, we were left discouraged and questioning our futures in the industry. We were misled from the start, and the reality never matched what was advertised. Cosmetology school should be about learning state board procedures and preparing us to pass the exam -- instead, this program left a lot of us feeling scammed and unsupported. They were constantly shooting us down with negativity. Nearly every student I spoke with shared the same frustrations and regrets. It is simply not worth paying tens of thousands of dollars for this school when you can get your hours at a community college program for a fraction of the cost. I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere. It honestly breaks my heart to write this review. A lot of us enrolled here -- excited to learn and build a career in something we were passionate about, but left drained and discouraged. I wish I didn't feel this way, but I know I'm not the only one. I'm not only speaking up for myself, but for my classmates who are too afraid to stand up. I just hope my honest experience is taken into consideration and incites positive change. read more

I went in to get my permanent hair dye removed from my hair and specifically asked for a bleach wash, but I was given a high lift instead. I clearly stated I don't have much virgins hair as it's only on the top and the rest of it is the permanent hair dye that I wanted OUT. My hair is alright, I feel bad for the student because she did her best and worked on my hair from 11am-5pm, but the learning leader was the one who told her to do something else. $88 for one color with a phase 1 student. $40 for color $12x4 bowls of dye I would say that this experience was not priced according to the experience. You'd be better off going to a regular salon and paying more because you'll be spending about 50% more time on a service here. If it was cheaper, I could justify the time it took. The results came out good. Can't complain. "In life there's time and money"- it did take a significant chunk of time and wasn't as spendthrift as I hoped. Saving money gives me a dopamine hit and I didn't get that here. I wanted to be cheap and not go to my regular stylist. I kind of regret it because I only saved $20-30 but it cost me my time-3 hours or so. I love savings but this was a bust lol. I had time to kill so I figured why not. Overall I won't be coming back, BUT it may be a good option for some folks but the savings are minimal. Just be aware. I had a great student who was on the same page as me. Cons: The instructor was rude when explaining things to me. I don't like people shooting down my ideas without telling me why they're suggesting something else. She just kept repeating her statement and was being slightly passive aggressive. I'm open to learning and collaborating on what will work best but the manner in which she explained things could use some work. I got hair dye on my hydroflask and book. The students don't have rolling trays so they're constantly reaching over you to grab bleach and dyes. I know these students pay good $ to learn here. The least they could do is provide salon trays that are rollable so they can work efficiently and not cause messes on clients. I have a soft spot for students in any field because we were all there once. That's kind of the reason I wanted to try Paul Mitchell school. I like to try different salon services from low end to high end and see why they're priced the way they are. This one was overpriced for the service. Would not recommend. BUT if you're a curious person like me and never received treatment at a cosmetology school, it is a curious treat to say the least. read more

ZERO STARS IF I COULD. Do not go to Paul Mitchell The School Pasadena. It's insanely overpriced for an "education" where you learn nothing there's no consistent teachers and no real curriculum, so you end up teaching yourself everything outside of school. The instructors are wildly unprofessional. They gossip about students and each other, make inappropriate sexual comments, and there are obvious boundary violations with staff-student relationships. The whole environment feels uncomfortable, toxic, and honestly disturbing. Discipline isn't based on rules it's based on favoritism, personal issues, and hidden agendas. They throw students onto clients with little to no training, which is unfair to both students and the people paying for services. I learned absolutely nothing here. The leadership is just as bad Angela, the director, is rude, dismissive, and completely unsupportive. Overall, this place is disorganized, corrupt, and not worth a single dollar. Save your money and go somewhere that actually teaches you something. read more

I've been to this Paul Mitchell location twice -- the first time was great, but my second visit was awful. I booked a scalp treatment and styling and asked for straight hair with waves and volume. The student ran a flat iron through my hair once, which didn't style it at all. Then someone else stepped in, drenched my hair with water, and blow-dried it without ever telling me that would cost extra. I was there for over four hours, and my hair still wasn't done. It felt damp, frizzy, and nothing like what I asked for. At the end, I told the instructor my hair wasn't finished and asked if I could get a discount. Instead, they just called over another student to try and fix it -- she did a decent job, but by then the style was completely different from what I wanted. I don't think I should have been charged for a flat-iron service when the straightening was basically undone after they soaked my hair, especially since no one helped for hours and I left with a style I didn't ask for. I'm honestly embarrassed by how my hair turned out, and I still had to pay $67 for a service that left me disappointed, frustrated, and uncomfortable. I understand this is a school and students are still learning -- I respect that. But if mistakes happen, instructors should be more present, and there should be some leniency when the result is this far from what was promised. read more

I was FRESH out of the Navy and super excited to start a new journey however going here, was a mistake. How did the school get a whole lump some of 10k before I even got my BAH??? My pay was FCKKKEDDD for a while before it was fixed. Please please please go ELSEWHERE.. They don't even help with placement afterwards. The ONLY NICE & GENUINE people who worked at the school were the front desk, admin office & the people who helped with loans/pay. Now....how was my experience so bad? Well I will say FAVORITISM is the #1. Teachers & staff had favorites. You could tell when students would get treated differently than others. Most times students would get treated as CHILDREN even though we were ALL adults. Some teachers would talk to students as if they were stupid. #2 They don't care about the students nor their success . If they did, they would continue to stay in touch to see how people are doing & if they have a job yet. I graduated Dec 2024 & have yet to receive any follow ups. (Only Ms. Steph & Ms. B would constantly interact with everyone to make sure they were doing good) Honestly the best out of all the teachers there. Knowledgeable, humble, aspiring and powerful leaders!!!!!!! #3 UNPROFESSIONAL Some staff trying to hook up with students and flirting with them. The flirting was more constant than anything else. 12/30/2024 Today - I called to make a haircut appointment. I was told I am unwelcome there. It's probably due to my earlier review. There is an instructor named Judy that called me to complain about me. She said that "people" complained about me. I asked which people and how many? It was one student that got offended because I took a call. My father had a fall. It was an emergency and I had to take the call. I apologized. The student rolled her eyes. She was very rude. She said she was graduating. Judy told me I violated some policy. **+There's no policy against taking care of your family. Family is first. *** I told her it is impossible there's a policy that customer can't take an emergency call. I didn't sign a paper indicating that. If I did. I am unaware. There is probably a policy that students and staff can't take calls. A customer? If that's the case there should be posted signs and some kind of agreement that you sign. Telling people they cannot communicate? Wow?! I wonder if the Paul Mitchell knows his staff treat their customers like this. I had brought others to this school. Had The Works facial and my esthetician was Desiree. Nice clean lobby and waiting area and were greeted as soon as we walked in. Please remember that this is a school so don't come expecting to look like a spa. I was provided a towel for cover up and Desiree asked a few questions regarding my skin and skin care routine. They use the same high quality equipment and beauty skin care lines as other spas. The facial was so relaxing and my skin looked amazing afterwards. The Vibes here are FANTASTIC! Just got another haircut. I LOVE coming here. It should be noted that the instructors here foster a very supportive environment to the students. That cannot be stressed enough. Special shoutout to Debbie - who personally greets the customers & kindly goes over the plan of action so that the customer, the student, & she (as the instructor) are all on the same page. Her amazing energy, genuine care, & thoughtful consideration puts everyone at ease. If the person cutting my hair is calm + feels good, then I myself, as the customer will feel good as well. I haven't really seen that same positive & supportive energy at other schools. Debbie is the real MVP & any institution is lucky to have her. Also - shoutout to Tyler at the front desk. I appreciate that she genuinely wants to know how your experience went & she goes above & beyond to make sure that you're taken care in any way that she can. The hairstylist are all super sweet and kind. The instructors are the main issue. I communicated clearly my desire to go blonde was told it was possible. We were going to split it into two days. However the instructor kept arguing with my hairstylist and caused us to be there for 3 hours, one test strains and no way to do it. Then they bleached one half of my head and had no time to tone it. My poor stylist was so stressed. I had to pay $300 to get it fixed. I don't hold her as responsible. Because when I had literally told the instructor "well why wasn't I told this wasn't possible? Why wasn't this explained?" She told me "you only spent $80 dollars" which still? Money is being spent when I believe a service was possible? $80 is a lot for something that damaged my hair and on top of that had to get fixed. I have half a mind to demand a refund. TLDR- haircut wise these girls are great. Just keep in mind their instructors are rude and condescending. And don't ever go there for bleaching services otherwise you'll spend a lot of money fixing it- at no fault of the stylist but instructor. read more

This review was for hair service done back in December 2022. Called and made an appointment for hair color and consult with level 2 stylist. I needed to make sure and arrive 15-20 min early because as other reviewers mentioned, parking is tricky, expensive and hard to find. My appointment was on a Thursday morning, 10am (this was earliest available). Despite giving myself lots of time, I barely made it. So I didn't have time to look for parking and opted to park at the parking structure the Paul Mitchell school shared the building. Upon check in, I was introduced to my stylist, April. She was friendly and ushered me to her station. She asked all the questions about my likes, dislikes and expectations. Showed her photos I saved on Pinterest. Long and short, April did a fantastic job. I loved my hair color and cut. Bad news was, she was graduating and completing her program....and I would be her last client. Happy for her and wish her well. I'm a happy client and plan to return for an update with my hair color. Final word is give EXTRA time for parking because it was expensive. Call to make your appointment that's convenient for you, at minimum 1-2 weeks ahead. I tried to make one during Thanksgiving week and no-go. Highly recommend. Place is worth trying out.
