I drove up from Hilo on a Sunday for my kid's soccer, and I couldn't wait to go get a pizza after the game for all of us, but they weren't making pizza at 1:30 in the afternoon on a Sunday because they had a large order. Poor planning. Poor management. Don't take orders that large in the middle of a Sunday. Orders over a certain size should be pre-ordered and planned for accordingly, so the rest of us can still eat. I have patronized this place at least once a month since they opened 15 years ago. Quality and service have diminished greatly in the past year. On three seperate occasions, they got the order worng and sent me home with meat pizzas, when I specifically ordered half vegetarian. I have been vegetarian since the age of 12, so 56 years. Inedible to me x 3. No apologies or refunds, just attitude every time. Most recently, I arrived to pick up a pizza ordered sometime earlier that day and it found it had not been placed in the oven. After a 12-hour shift in psychiatry, I had no wish to wait around. I canceled the order and requested a refund. I was told it would be credited to my card the following day. Still no refund by Saturday, so I dropped in. Waited in line to request the refund. Instead of the promised refund, the prep cook (not the manager) handed me a gift card, which I do not want and will likely never use. He walked away , gave no explanation, did not apologize or acknowledge the bad behavior. Before entering psychiatry 30 years ago, I was a repsected chef on the central California coast for years. We never gave customers a hard time and sour attitude for our mistakes, nor their's, and made very effort to be hospitable. Not this place. No aloha. read more

We were hoping to get some of James Angelo's pizza but alas, he was closed around the holiday. That led us here while in Waimea. Cute little spot in the same lot of Merriman's with a decent amount of parking. Sourdough pizza crust, which I think was a first for me, but pretty good! We shared a slice with pepperoni and pineapple and an Italian deli sandwich. The pizza was good, fresh, and probably would give it 4 stars. The sandwich was just okay, so more like a 3. They also had tacos that looked pretty good on the menu so if I came back I may try that next time. It's counter service and not table service, but it was efficient and friendly. Maybe more like a 3.5 but I will round up. Nice find in Waimea and worth a stop for some casual fare. read more

One of the best pizzas I have had. However the Italian sandwich and salad dressing on the salad were not so good. We ordered a pepperoni pizza and it was thin crust and the top was not dripping oil! That's how you know it's good. It was foldable, like a NY style pie. So good! Grabbed a salad from the cold case to get some greens in my system and that was the most sour Italian (or whatever kind of vinaigrette it was) dressing ever. I did not enjoy that, it was way too tart for my taste buds. The Italian sandwich was extremely salty. It would have been ok if the meats were not so overpowering. I like how the bread was homemade. We ended with the cream cheese brownie and it was ok...I would have liked it more on the chocolate side because it had a lot of cream cheese. read more

Not sure what's happened to Pau Pizza. We used to buy an entire Pepperoni pizza, eat some at resto, then take home the rest, freeze if necessary. But our last whole pizza looked and tasted different, had a dried out look. Today I ordered a slice of the meat pizza. I wanted a lot of protein. But the slice was mostly cheese and jalapeño peppers w very little meat. Really disappointing. Maybe a change in ownership or cook. But definitely not the same. For now it's not on our go to pizza. read more

To thin, minimal toppings. Very little of anything on the pizza. 7 people two large pizzas and only one eaten because the other one was terrible. Love this pizza place! The crust is sourdough and has an excellent chew and flavor. The toppings are fresh and delicious. The Hamakua always hits. You can order whole pies or by the slice. The salads are fresh and yummy, though a bit overpriced. They have desserts from time to time and also share a location with a taco joint, which is also very good. This was our first time wandering into this pizzeria and it's in an adorable little plaza! There's a cool, survival/camping store in the front attached to a coin coffee shop with delicious pastries! Look for my other review on "Surf Camp" and "Arvo." My Boyfriend was slightly hungry since we had an early lunch and we split a piece of pepperoni pizza. There were 2 employees working there and a guy was making pizzas in the back, as the cashier lady was grooving and singing the great 90's/2000's hip hop and R&B songs on the radio. Hee. The lady that worked there said it was organic sourdough crust, and the crust was light and crispy, and it wasn't too greasy considering it's pepperoni and cheese. Lol where are you want to go back and get some of the takeout containers for another nights dinner! They had an adorable little patio area that was covered since it was sprinkling and I would've taken a picture, but there were two couples eating pizza out there and I didn't want to disturb them. Mehn can I say! I love coming here whenever we visit big island. We always visit here twice a year and we always get the hamakua pizza and we would devour the whole pizza for 2 days. I really like the ambiance, as there is a passion for music, and it is usually laid-back. There is cheese and peppers, and there is hot sauce too. We get pizza here every time we come to Hawaii. It's a walk up, order than grab a table sorta place so not much in the way of traditional service, but it always feels easy. This place is AMAZING. Like no joke insane. The dough is made out of sourdough unlike anywhere else on earth and it's just so delicious everyone is speechless while eating it. It is so worth the detour. I know sometimes when people read reviews they don't know if it's real but I can assure you this place is to die for and I would die for it. The people working there are so nice and the place itself is so cute. Better than any New York style pizza you will have. This place is 11/10 I can't even stress it enough. This is a wonderful hidden gem up in Waimea. this place is known for their organic sourdough crust. They also have an array of breads in their bakery that you can enjoy. There's a lot of parking and a shared bathroom space within the little mall that's there. We ordered a split pizza that was a combination of their "whole hog " and the "ahualoa". both were absolutely delicious. All of the rest of their choices are probably equally as wonderful. So you really can't go wrong based on your choices if you want to split the flavors or go with a solid pie. I saw a lot of people just ordering takeout so that they could take it home. If you decide to do that you need to make sure that you order early as there is a bit of a wait for the pizza to show up. We waited around 20 minutes while we were enjoying the pleasure of the chickens trying to get whatever food they could from us. Their desserts look lovely and it was nice to see that you could enjoy either non-alcoholic or alcoholic beverages with your food. Next visit I'll try to enjoy some different flavors to see if I can do a comparison. They have really nice staff and a lot of available outdoor seating to accommodate a small group or a large group. If you're craving a really good pizza, don't go here. Sorry, we used to love coming here for the big, gorgeous, delicious pizzas and dine-in experience. Decided to pick up 2 pizzas to go, the Ahualoa & Hamakua, two very different pizzas. Opened the boxes and they looked almost identical. There was barely any mushrooms on the HAMAKUA MUSHROOM pizza! The pizzas were almost transparent thin, there was actually a whole in one of the slices, there was barely any toppings or cheese on either pizza, and they charged $29 per pizza. Very unsatisfactory to pay that much for a limp slice of what USED to be the best pizza anywhere. Sorry Pau Pizza, we pau with you. Sad. read more

I'm so glad I got to come back here after first being shown around by clients. I remember how delicious their sauce and perfectly crisp their crust was. For $14 I got a custom 3-topping "slice" and side salad. The "slice" is really 3 small slices but totally filling! You know you're getting quality produce when your dining in Kamuela. Almost everything is local grown/raised so that's such a bonus to support.
