Stopped in to this place on our way back to our hotel in Kona. The food was really tasty, and I appreciated how I could order just a hamburger patty on the side. Although I did enjoy the food, I had a couple gripes. First, they add a 15% surcharge to all orders, even though they make you order off the kiosk. I really don't understand why they do that, because you're basically inputting the order yourself. I wish they would just bake it into the prices because it seems kinda sketchy. That really drives the price up. The second is that their Maui root beer tap was down. My husband was really looking forward to a root beer float with root beer fresh from the tap. They were offering Barq's in the can as an alternative, but it's not the same. So while the food is good, beware that 15% and maybe call first if you have your heart set on a Maui Root Beer Float. read more

Buyer beware!!! No matter what you order; there is an additional 15% service charge added to every single order no matter what you buy... A single burger is $8.99... A single slice of cheddar cheese is $3.21... The burger is about the same size as a basic McDonald's cheeseburger... Although, it was also over 3x the price... On the upside, it was a better tasting burger... Although for that price, it should be... I didn't spend the additional money for a single slice of cheddar cheese; once you add the additional cheese, service charge fee, and tax that would have made it a $15.00 cheeseburger... If you want fries with the cheeseburger, it's an additional $8.00... plus tax and that additional 15% service fee of course... So you would be in about $25 for a cheeseburger and fries, and of course the additional 15% service charge on every single order... You have been for-warned... think twice about the pricing structure of this little Mom and Pop shop... So to put this in perspective, if you had ordered 4 cheeseburgers with fries.... For a family of four, this would've put you out over $110.00 with the additional 15% service fee and tax included... And this price doesn't even include any drinks... WOW!!!! I'm so glad I stumbled upon this place. We were at the market next door and I really wanted some fish tacos and saw this place had some so I decided to try it out and boy am I so glad I did. Their Baja fish tacos are PHENOMENAL!! I'm not kidding when I say they're the best fish tacos I've ever had. The flavor was so damn good and the tortilla was the best corn tortilla I've had. I'm going to be dreaming about these when I go back home. All of the workers were also so friendly from the moment we walked in and the service was so fast. We walked into this little hole in the wall and were immediately greeted by the nicest woman excited to tell us about their daily specials. The menu is packed with delicious burgers and drinks perfect after a long hot day. I ordered the fresh fish burger, onion rings, the garlic Parmesan fries and a pink lemonade pineapple whip. The fish burger was ground ahi with fresh lettuce and a thousand island dressing. delicious mix of flavors! The garlic parm fries were the perfect loaded fries without being soggy. And the pink lemonade pineapple whip? Unbelievable. While we were eating, a gentleman started talking with us about where we're from and the island. He said he is the owner's son. Surf Burger opened up right next to Kohala Burger & Taco. In fact they have the same owner and share a kitchen. Like Kohala Burger their menu is focused on, you guessed it, burgers. Surf Burger is meant to be more of a grab and go spot. They only have a small bench for seating and are really there for the take out crowd. The service seems much faster than Kohala, which is sort of renowned for their slow service. The burgers at Surf Burger are made with the same patties and in the same kitchen as Kohala Burger but seem to be a bit smaller. Mostly due to fewer accoutrements and their simpler format. Fries and onion rings are also less expensive than next door, however the servings are also much smaller. The onion rings in particular are a tiny portion, I think there were four or five in our serving. The burgers here are good and they have other options including two types of fish burgers, a vege burger along with some breakfast style options. Overall, Surf Burger is a solid option for a quick pick me up. I wouldn't go out of my way to grab a burger here, but if you are passing by and have a hankering it's a great spot to stop. read more

Ok so this review is mostly on me because I ordered tacos at a burger place (we wanted tacos ok?! This was a complete hole in the wall as we were exploring the north side of the island. We had a special of the day, Poke taco, dos tacos, cheeseburger and some dole whip, all which were absolutely amazing. The tacos were unique flavors, fresh fish, and better than any dine in restaurants we ate at while we visited the island. This was a take out only, so we ate in the parking lot in our car, we were greeted by a lovely lady who asked us if We enjoyed the food and gave us recommendations as we continued on our travels north. This is an unassuming place with delicious fish tacos and burgers. Great for families. They use nice fish in the fish tacos. Great flavor and sauces. Really friendly and thoughtful staff from start to finish. They really want to be sure you're happy. Root beer floats always a hit. It seems like a shame to say the best food I had on Kona was a burger shack, but it is the truth! My wife and I had two of the pineapple bacon cheeseburgers and after a week of fresh seafood there was nothing we wanted more. The service was killer and I will be back every time I visit. read more

Ordered a tiki burger (teriyaki burger with pineapple) here. I took one bite and spit it out, it tasted like a rotting dead animal. It was the worst thing I have ever tasted in my life. It was so bad I couldn't even eat it. I went back and told them and they gave me a refund. Absolutely terrible ownership with a bad attitude.
