We went to this resort to see the mana rays and had dinner here. The drinks were good. My husband had the catch of the day which was mahi mahi and was really meaty. I had the butter fish which was tender and it had miso and bok choy with it. Overall the fish was good, not great. The app we had was the Korean fried cauliflower and that was the best thing i ate there. We each had two drinks. My drinks were really good, but my husband said his were ho hum. The resort is beautiful and the view is beautiful. Food overall is good, but not spectacular. We were disappointed that the mana rays did not make an appearance, but we went during a Kona storm when the tours weren't running up north due to the waves so I figured that might have impacted it. Would i go again? To see the manta rays, yes, but probably not for the food. Final note: valet parking was free with the validation done by the server. read more

This was recently renovated with new furniture and with amazing ocean views in an outdoor covered location. The service was phenomenal and I even found out that one of the buskers is the son of the sushi chef so I got the scoop what to order as their favorite m. Such a kind gentleman. The drinks were delicious and the ambiance with live Hawaiian dancing and music was the best. Bring your children, have them learn some hula, and watch the smiles. Been coming here for over 21 years while staying at Mauna Kea and out of all the restaurants here we have always loved Copper Bar and its consistency of yummy, delicious food. However, this most recent dining experience that we had a few days ago was sadly not as great, which was a total bummer. We still love the staff and servers. Especially our friends at the bar who always keep us super happy. But the food has really gone downhill compared to years past. The KFC was meh. Green beans were too sweet. The once awesome big chicken wings weren't anywhere near as good as they used to be in a buffalo sauce that was weirdly sweet. And lastly, the sushi rolls and sashimi! Not so epic anymore. We came to Copper Bar on our last night in the Big island to splurge for our last dinner and to check out the antar overlook located in the resort. Vallet parking only and it is free with dining validation. The hostess would ask you for your parking ticket upon checking in. We did make a reservation to dine there and glad we did because the restaurant was packed! The restaurant had an indoor outdoor feel, the seatings were interesting with lots of tables looked more like coffee tables than the standard dining tables. We did get the dining table (we prefer) though. There was live music with a hula dancer though the hula seemed to last only until.around 730ish and we got there around 715 (our reservation time). Beware, service was on the slow.side and food came out very slowly. Our waitress was not attentive too but I think she was busy serving other tables since it was a busy night. Hubby ordered the new york steak and I had the daily fish special that came with risotto. We also shared the Korean sauce wings as appetizer and my toddler had the pepperoni pizza from the keiki menu. The wings were really good! Perfectly fried and still juicy and the sauce was yumm! Like.i said though, food came out slow..probably at least 20-30 minutes wait before the wings (appetizer) came out and they forgot my hubby's hibiscus drink too. Toddler liked the pizza! It was basically half the portion of the full Flatbread pizza order, thus, the half-price. But it was good! I think it took another 10-15 before the main entrees came out. Hubby's steak plate was nice and looked full! Sauteed King oyster mushrooms was the "veggie" side that night and they gave lots of them, so.tasty too! The fries were delicious too! And so was the steak! Hubby certainly was happy w his food and he certainly ordered the right item. My fish plate however was just so so. The risotto was nothing special. The fish was on the salty side and there was too little amount of veggies imo! I felt that My plate was small (too small) compared to my husband's even though the price was comparable. The risotto was probably like a little more than 1 full tablespoon We also ordered the desserts...the Portuguese pineapple bread pudding so so.so good..light and creamy. I.liked this one. But Hubby and toddler liked the chocolaty "popovers" profiteroles..but I thought the popovers were dry but the coffee ice.cream and chocolate sauce saved the dish. It was a pricey meal! We spent over $250 for the meal and my big stomach wanted more (savory) food However, the manta viewing (we walked to the viewing site after our meal) was great! We saw 2 manta....the big one was doing many acrobatic flips too..sooo cool! Came for dinner and it was not crowded. Live music played by Pomai.com a local hawaiian artist - how cool. Devin was our server and he gave great recommendations for drinks and food. The Mule drink was really good with a lemongrass and ginger flavor that was so refreshing! I had the duroc ribs with the sauce on the side (as recommended) and they were falling off the bone and so delicious. My wife had the volcano roll and there wasn't a bite left - she thoroughly enjoyed it. Devin is a fabulous server and a genuine kind person - thank you for your amazing service and love of your job. Our party of eight had a great time. Casual but still in the historic environment of this landmark. I first came here for dinner in 1980, staying at the hotel a couple of times in the 90's when kama'aina rates were affordable, and the place is still magical. Not inexpensive but memorable which is what we seek in dining experience. I do think that the big screen tv behind us was way out of place and a distraction from the fine live music and hula. Did not need to have football . Focus on the moment and the beautiful location, right? Marriott must have decided they needed a big screen viewing area for tech bros but traditionalists would be appalled as this was once a hotel without tv in the rooms and was a place to unplug. Located within a hotel (Marriott Autograph Collection), it's a destination afternoon and dinner establishment. Bar is a bit of a misnomer - it's mainly a restaurant. It has great sunset views and the ocean breeze wafts through gracefully. The service was fairly good. Since the hotel guests have few dining options, its best that you make dinner reservations as soon as possible. We were on vacation, so drinks before dinner: Mai Tais. We liked them: it was either the drinks themselves, the ocean breeze, being on vacation, the open dining environment, OR all of the above. (As a tip, my personal preference is to add a packet of sweetener to my Mai Tai.) We started with the Hearts of Palm Salad. This salad is as straight-forward as it looks, see my pic. All the fruit and veggies were fresh. This salad has a citrus flavor palate, as you can see by the grapefruit sections and the caper citrusette (lemon) dressing. It was light and refreshing. We followed this with the Red Dragon Roll, see pic. There is a crab mix inside and topped with ahi. The crunchiness of golden Yuzu Tobiko was a super compliment fresh ahi and creamy avocado. The flavors of the garlic aioli and unagi (eel) sauce added the requisite depth to the prominently featured ahi. On the heartier side we ordered their Brick Oven Flatbreads. The Cochon is basically a meat-lovers meal, see pic. It didn't disappoint with all the various types of rich meat. It also has 3 types of cheeses - somewhere under the meat. On the lighter side of the flatbread spectrum is the Hamakua Mushroom flatbread. This has diced mushrooms, see my pic, and uses truffle sea salt (the truffle flavor was faint, at best). read more

If nothing else, the Copper Bar is consistent. Consistently slow. Our reservation was at 7:45pm, we were seated at 8:00, ordered drinks, ordered food and waited. When the piña coladas came out, they were very watery tasting. No flavor. They remade them, but still sub par. The food arrived 43 minutes after ordering. The Rainbow Veggie Rolls are devoid of flavor - avoid. The Copper Fries - one of their best items. The burger was good - but cooked rare. The pizza was good - second best item The edamame - came out cold and have no seasoning what's so ever. The wait staff is nice, but overwhelmed. Mauna Kea needs better restaurant options. On Sunday and Monday, the only night restaurant available is the Copper Bar. The 3 star review is being generous. read more

He looked just like the guy seating people, with so many workers poor guy had to wear a couple hats and never got back to our table. I got up and went to the bar and got the wedges. NBD, chill. We had such great experiences at Copper Bar that we chose to dine there 3 times during our stay at Mauna Kea. If you don't have reservations in the evening, you will wait for a few even if staying at the property but the food and the ambiance are well worth it. Udon Noodles were one of the best I've ever had with a unique taste profile. I was a bit underwhelmed by the Hamachi Sashimi but the Mahi Mahi special was delicious. Service was attentive during all 3 visits. They even brought out a special ice cream dessert for my mom's birthday. The evening live music with a hula dancer accompanying was great. Cocktails are lovely and if you talk to the concierge, they have a cocktail bar pass between this hotel and their sister hotel down the street, the Westin! You can get a passport, and if you buy five drinks within all the bars, you get a food credit!! I love all the cocktails in the way the bartenders can mix a Lilikoi with vodka perfectly!! I also liked the fact they had some pineapple and tangerine siders on top, depending upon which bar you visit! I recently found out I had a gluten allergy, and sadly cannot drink any beer, anymore. No, wow, no. The experience here was so bad we began taking notes on it as the night went on, because we already knew this was going to be one of those epic failures the family will look back and laugh about for years to come. We arrive before our reservation. There's a hula musician playing towards the middle portion of the seating area. We asked if we could be seated line of sight to the musician and were told yes and that we'd be called when the table was ready. Enjoyed some drinks at the bar, inquired about the table around the thirty minute mark. There were dirty dishes covering nearly every surface near the waiting areas adjacent to the check-in stand, so that probably should have been a warning that we'd be better off moving along. We were called to be seated about 40 minutes past the reservation time. We were seated immediately behind the host stand, nowhere near the musician. I inquired about that request but was told there were no tables available. I did understand that to be partially true, as we could see the five or so empty tables that we could have been sat at to see the musician were completely covered in dirty dishes. Hostess sat us minus one place setting, and told us she'd return with that, which she never did. We were being served by Hudson, who, throughout the night, showed up no less than every 25 minutes. Later in the evening when we'd finally had enough of the poor service, and said something, he informed us that he was bogged down by a very "needy" large group he was also assigned to. We inquired how large a group it was and were informed it was massive party of eight.... While we were not being eaten by bugs, we were instead watching the non-biting insects crawling all over our table, including termites. There were also discarded wings of insects all over our 'clean' table; I uploaded pics of both. One hour into our seating, and twenty minutes after having ordered food, two of our orders arrive and we're told the other two aren't available and we'd need to order something else. So half the party gets to eat while we start the process all over for the other half. The Hearts of Palm salad showed up with no.... hearts of palm. No reason to inform you the namesake ingredient of your order is out, just serve it and see what happens. One of our replacement orders was ordered as a split, which didn't happen, because they split a different order instead, so that person got to eat off two plates while the other two people shared a plate. The margarita pizza came out at room temp. At seventy minute mark we'd been visited twice. We finally made someone else get our check, paid, and left. read more

I mean Hawaii is expensive already, plus an upcharge for resort dining. Both were fine, not upset about the flavor or anything but man ... it's more expensive than I would like. My family and I went to this restaurant because we are staying right next-door at the Westin. We ordered calamari, the cauliflower, and three spicy tuna rolls. The appetizers took forever to come and came right before our main course which always is a telltale sign of bad service. The calamari breading was slipping off the meat and appeared as though it could've have been frozen. Cauliflower was good but nothing noteworthy. Spicy tuna rolls tasted like the one at my local whole foods in california. Once again, nothing noteworthy. When the bill came at the end we were taken aback by the absurd price for this medicare at best meal. We are now back at our hotel with stomachaches. In addition, the atmosphere was overall dreary and could've had me falling asleep at the table. The live singer singing breakup songs was a nice addition to the sad meal and depressing vibe. Overall, I 100% prefer eating at the Westin Hāpuna which has great food, is not overpriced or mediocre, and doesn't make my family take pepto bismol. read more

I am only going to post a picture of a chicken wing from the Copper Bar, and three facts related to my experience at this restaurant. 1 - After bitting into a clearly raw chicken wing, I asked our server to take the remaining wings back and, when asked, we told him we did not want another order of wings. 2 - We were still charged on our bill for the wings, though they were removed after I refused to pay for them. 3 - I have reached out the restaurant GM and Chef via email, with the photo of the wing, with no response after 3 weeks. read more

My least favorite restaurant during our week stay at the Mauna Kea. The food was ok. I enjoyed the sushi the couple of times we had it, but everything else was sub par for the location and price point. The reason for such a low rating was really the experiences I had with the bartender. He was the only person I encountered the entire week that was really unpleasant. From our first encounter it was like he genuinely didn't like me for some reason. He was cool with everyone else it seemed like, but every instance I had with him he was just salty. The worst part he worked there almost every single day so there was no avoiding him. It all started when I asked about getting a table for dinner that night early, as we'd been booking all the restaurants at the hotel and at the Westin same day for different times just depending on how we felt. He acted like there was no way we could get a reservation since we hadn't booked in advance. (We got a booking for 7pm at the concierge 10 min later) Then we were watching the women's NCAA basketball final, and I had a couple of Heinekens while we sat. He literally poured it like water from a bottle, so it had a huge head and it spilled over the top. It's fine if it's a draft and you don't know what you are doing, but it was an $11 bottle! Just hand it to me if you don't know how to pour a beer. Another night I ordered an old fashioned which was terrible. I wouldn't order another one, so another one so the next night I opted for a glass of wine since he couldn't pour beer or make a mixed drink. I asked for a mid-priced Pinot noir, and when I got the bill I guess he decided to pour the more expensive one. I brought it up and he acted like it was my fault or something. Just couldn't win with the guy. Ruined the experience at this establishment for the week. Otherwise, the hosts and servers were wonderful, and the view is incredible. read more

The guys at the gate take their jobs very seriously, to the point of being dismissive and condescending to those who are not guests. Jaslynn, the General Manager went the extra mile to curate a birthday celebration with a quieter table, utilizing our candles + decorations as well as gifting a beautiful printed frame with a personalized birthday wish. It was truly special! The beet salad with shrimp and burger with fries were delicious as well as the chocolate peanut butter dessert. Allergies of gluten and dairy were graciously accomodated. The ambience is super cozy and inviting. The live music was unexpected and fantastic. When the staff came over with the birthday dessert/flare candle and had the musician sing happy birthday with a personalized name, it truly made our celebration meaningful!! A colleague recommended the Copper Bar for dinner, drinks, and watching the manta rays, and I am so glad he did. We started with a round of cocktails. I had the Lavender 65, which is their play on the French 75 which is my new favorite cocktail. It was a beautiful, barely lavender color and very light, bubbly and refreshing, with just enough sweet. I very much enjoyed my dinner - the green beans small plate and a sushi roll. The beans are super fresh and lightly steamed, but the real star was the Szechuan sauce and crispy almonds at the bottom of the plate. They gave the beans a real kick. My coworkers were having a conversation and I was sitting in the corner trying to pick all of the spicy almonds out of the sauce! I also had the Plumeria roll, which was a large spicy tuna roll with daikon radish and kind of rainbow fish across the top. It was wonderful. I love spicy tuna. My friend had the Red Dragon because she wanted crab, and hers was also very good, but I preferred the Plumeria personally. (I also think she preferred hers to mine, so it's all about preference!) The food here was very good, and as some other folks mentioned, the service is a little slow. But the cherry on top for me was that the hotel has installed some lights below the cliff to attract the plankton that attracts the manta rays. So after dinner, you can walk down to the cliffs and watch the mantas roll in the cove below, listen to the waves crash on the cliffs, and some of the jazz music floats down. It is just fantastic. We chose Copper Bar for our first night on the Big Island based on a friend's recommendation. We made our reservation to coincide with sunset and we were treated to an epic sunset after what had been a pretty rainy day. The menu was not very innovative, mostly things you'd find at most places, but the sashimi sampler was amazing! The salmon in particular was so good. We even ordered some additional salmon as we couldn't get enough of it! The flatbreads were pretty basic and the other sushi rolls were similar to what you'd get at most sushi restaurants, but it's really about the space and sunsets. The space is like being in a huge hotel reception area with gigantic vaulted ceilings and amazing views to the ocean and even though the space was large, they did a good job of making it also feel cozy and intimate. Definitely recommend for an amazing sunset spot and casual dining. read more

As the restaurant got busier we never saw our server again until we were done with our meal. She never came by to see how the food was or if we wanted another drink. Speaking of the food - the 57 dollar steak was mediocre at best. The 40 dollar burger was ordered well done and came rare. No one ever asked how the food was and we were pretty much abandoned until it was time for the bill to be paid. Again never asked how the food was.
