Super lovely staff are always there to service your every need. The food is also great, classic Pan-Asian dishes and fresh salads. Their thick cut peppered bacon is delicious! Sushi with fresh local fish, salads with local produce, even the Udon Noodle feature bright fresh bok chop and other seasonably fresh additions. Yum. Consistently excellent during our recent stay at Mauna Kea. Stunning views, wonderful entertainment, warm & welcoming staff, great menu, top quality food and drinks. The flatbreads were substantial and delicious, the udon noodles the same. Caprese salad was outstanding. The desserts were incredible, particularly the profiteroles with warm chocolate sauce. Our server Meagan (Megan? from Boston) was a total joy...her mile-wide smile and happy spirit made our dining experience that much better. ***STOP AND READ WARNING*** Our experience at the Copper Bar at Mauna Kea came at a high price and ended up in an ER hospital visit due to this restaurant's incompetence. I will preface this review with the fact that we checked with the staff 4 times regarding the nut allergy we had. So when we first made the reservation, we made the staff aware we had a SEVERE nut allergy. Then when we were seated, we let them know once again about the allergy. Then when we received our food we checked again. For the 4th time, when we got the dessert menu we asked again to make sure our dessert didn't have nuts. When they first brought out the dessert (a crumble), they assured us that the dessert was made in house and had no nuts. It was supposed to come with vanilla ice cream, however, when they brought it out it had chunks in it so we check with the staff. TURNS OUT IT WAS MAC NUT ICE CREAM. They supposedly ran out of vanilla so they thoughtlessly replaced with Mac nut. Guess this should have been the first red flag. After taking 1 bite of the crumble, my bf got itchy throat. Then the hives came. Within 10 minutes we realized we had to go to the hospital. We went to check with the staff to find out what nut was in the crumble so we could tell the ER staff. They denied that there was any nuts in it despite the physical evidence in front of them. We ended up leaving pretty quickly because his throat started to close. THANK GOD WE HAD AND EPI PEN. We had to use it in the lobby on the way out to the car along with 3 Benadryl so that we could make it to the closest hospital (located 30 minutes away in Waimea). The manager seemed nice at first, and said they would comp our meal for their grave mistake. HOWEVER, it was ALL CHEAP TALK. Not only did they not reimburse us, but I tried to call the staff to inquire about our experience (during their working hours as instructed), and they didn't pick up. I also left my call back information and I never heard back. As for the rest of the experience, food was decent, (Ha Bar at Mauna Lani was much better - HIGHLY RECOMMEND). Staff was nice, but not the most attentive. They did have live music which was pretty cool. The view was also great for sunset. Overall, I will not be coming back and I recommend that anyone with allergy concerns STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS RESTAURANT!!! read more

We love the Copper Bar and have enjoyed all our meals here the past 2 weeks. But tonight's fresh catch of ono just didn't work. Too much going on for one dish. The ono was over cooked and not enough sauce to overcome the dry fish. It was literally a large dry lump of ono. The cilantro rice was good but not with the fish and sauce it came with. And then beans and broccolini? I'd go with just the broccolini and forget the green beans. And I love green beans. To me, ono, pan seared, should be light and flakey and not hard and dry. Like I said, it just didn't work for us tonight. And staff offered us another entree which we declined since we were not that hungry by then. And they listened to what we said about the meal and took it off our bill. All of which we appreciated though we were not expecting it to be taken off off our bill and told them that was not necessary. But, the kfc (Korean fried cauliflower) was delicious as always. And the calimari was really good as well. We can't wait to return for more of that. And our drinks were delicious too. And the service? Always so good. Everyone is always so friendly and helpful. I ordered the BBQ pork ribs and it was like eating cardboard, It was very dry. Mentioned it to the waitress and all she said was oh it usually falls off the bone. She didn't even offer me to order something else. My granddaughter's chicken tender was over cooked. In general I try to avoid eating I resorts because I know the food is always subpar to what you can get out in town from a local business. But, my husband and I were too tired to venture out so we landed at Copper Bar. Everything about the bar is great except that the food seems to be overpriced, even by Hawaii'a standards. We loved that this was a close walk to our room at the Mauna Kea, the views of the beach, the lovely acoustic guitar player and the graceful hula dancer. Our server was also sweet, conversational and friendly. I was satisfied within my $30 ahi tuna entree but $26 for three chicken sliders and some brocollini seems silly. This was probably the worst of the restaurants that we experienced while in Hawaii. In theory, this is along the lines of a hotel lobby bar / lounge that you would see at other places. However, this is the only lobby bar that has demanded a reservation while seemingly being completely empty. We swung by around 5:30 to find the copper bar sparsely filled (think 10 tables of 30). The hostess refused to seat us, reason being that all the empty tables were in fact reserved. We made a reservation for later, and wound up waiting 40 minutes past our reservation time before we could be seated. We waited an additional 15 minutes to be acknowledged by a waiter after being seated. The wait staff were friendly, if seemingly overloaded despite the apparent slowness of the restaurant. The hostess does not have the temperament for a hospitality role, especially at a resort like the Mauna Kea. The menu is a little all over the place. Both the pizza and sushi were alright, the calamari was borderline inedible. The only reason this place gets 2 stars is for the bartender who ran to the kitchen to get our to-go order placed before the kitchen closed later the same week. read more

I hope our experience tonight was a one off experience and not the norm. Even considering that I am hesitant to go back to copper bar. We decided to go early to the Mauna Kea for our dinner reservations at Manta, another restaurant at the resort, so that we could visit copper bar. The timing could not be more perfect either since they were in the middle of their jazz and blues festival. Unfortunately all that was left to come was disaster. The service was slow which might be expected but give the event you would think they would have extra staff on hand. Had this been the only issue I still would have rated the bar higher as it had its positives like the view at sunset and live music but I was sadly disappointed to find out they were out of all of there draft beer except three taps, those most common on the island. We chose to come here before dinner because of their selection of craft beer. In the alternative I chose to order a whiskey and coke. I was sadly disappointed again when my bill arrived to find the price of my one shot whiskey was more than what they sell an entire bottle for. I understand at a resort I will pay resort prices but this was absurd. As a result I find no shortage of other bars with beautiful views of the sunset and friendly staff and I will be hard pressed to return to the copper bar. Drinkers be ware. read more

This might be one of the most impressive scenic views I've experienced in Hawaii and that including other islands and other visits! The sunset here is what you imagine paradise to look like! The first bit of advice is make reservations! I don't think you can even get into the parking lot without a rez. Once you have that out of the way, try to show up around Sunset. The outdoor seating is directly facing the ocean and more compelling that the food food at this point in the evening! We shared a couple items for dinner. The menu has a good mix of American, Japanese and local flavors. We split a burger, 2 pizzas, wings and some dessert. The burger had a sharp aioli kick to it and the fries were on the money! I thought the pizza pies were solid as well. The crust was spot on and the margheritta flatbread was terrific. The Hamakua mushroom pie was tasty as well. It was a little too creamy for my taste, but it was still tasty. The wings were OK, a little to messy, but OK. I think they would taste better with a cold beer, but either way, they tasted above average. Overall, the experience is terrific and the service is 5 star without question! We were treated to an island concert during our service, so you can imaging the soundtrack fitting the best Hawaiian sunset. Adding to all that is a lookout point set up by the hotel. After your meal, you can walk down to see Manta Rays feeding at night. There's a giant lookout with a spotlight, so the incredible creatures are illuminated as you watch them eat dinner. It's more than just a meal, It's an evening! I think it's worth the time and money! read more

Was seated at our table at 6:40 and we ordered. At 7:30 our appetizers came. At 8:00pm, I asked if someone could check on our food and was told it would be 15 minutes. I asked to speak to the manager at 8:15pm when our food was not there but two other tables who had arrived after us had been served (one was a bigger party than us too). The waitress told me she would get the manager but that they were taking our food off the grill currently. At 8:30, the manager had still not come and neither had our food. It was not super busy either. We left and will not be coming back as we had to get our kid to bed. I am extremely disappointed in this experience as I had always heard such nice things about the Mauna Kea and this was my first time at their hotel. For a restaurant in a 5 star hotel, I would expect better service and communication. I realize that waitresses have no control over the kitchen staff, but the fact that the manager couldn't even be bothered to come and speak with us speaks volumes about how this restaurant is being run. read more

The cauliflower and salad was incredible. We wouldn't recommend ordering steak here, although the mashed potatoes and broccolini was good. The sashimi was very fresh but not the best I've had. Service is impeccable and what one should expect at a world class resort. The staff doesn't disappoint. We have been there when Nephi Brown is playing music and his wife, Toni dance hula. On the night we went there, we were a little sad he was not there but the sadness disappeared when his substitute, Tani Waipa, played that first chord on her ukulele and the first note came out of her mouth, we thought to ourselves how lucky Copper Bar is by having two talented musicians to entertain their guests. Ms. Waipa is versatile and can play traditional Hawaiian music, jazz, pop, blues, and believe or not, country/western. The place was beautiful and food was delicious! We arrived last night and we're pretty hangry and this was the closest restaurant from our Mauna Kea condo. This place did seem like a reservations recommended kind of place but they seated us promptly without one. We went for dinner at least 3 times and we also used their grab and go breakfast in the morning. One morning my husband grabbed a ham and cheese croissant to take with him to golf but when he opened it there was no ham! I did get the quiche there twice and it was good. I do wish they had some gluten free choices in the morning. At dinner their drinks were good. They had live music and a dancer and that was nice. One night it was crowded and the service was terrible-my friend had to go to the bar to get another drink because we couldn't find our waitress. But overall the staff was friendly and helpful. It is overpriced, but it is in a resort in Hawaii so that is not a surprise. It was very convenient for us. Over our stay we had a burger there, sushi, pizza, Caesar salad, soup, and a sweet potato veggie entree that was gluten free and really good.
