I had an amazing experience today for Mother's Day lunch! We frequent here at least once a month. We were greeted and served by Arnold. His customer service is amazing and we have become friends. He always provides us with excellent service. Today we met another amazing individual who took time to visit and chat at our table. Olivia was sincerely warm and friendly. She asked what I was going to have for lunch and returned later to ask me how I enjoyed it! (I had the Mother's Day special which was sooo delicious!) Towards the end of our meal, I was blessed with the most amazing surprise! I received an envelope from Olivia! The letter inside made me feel extra special and valued. Not many establishments take time to give back to their customers. A gift certificate was also enclosed for me to use on a future visit. Thank you for giving back to the community. Foster's Kitchen is located within King's Shop. We had reservations, but when we arrived there was no host at the booth outside the restaurant. There were a few other parties hovering around, all of us wondering how we'd get checked in. As we continued to wait outside, it started to rain. Finally we're seated about 30 minutes after our reservations. The kids were given a coloring sheet (their menu), but no crayon. No one came around our table for some time, so we finally walked to the front to ask for a couple of crayons since the kids were already antsy from the long wait outside. It was not a great start to our dining experience. Finally our server comes over, and she is very friendly. We just didn't see her much throughout our meal. The food got mostly positive reviews. What we ordered: + Bruschetta - everyone enjoyed this + Steak & Shrimp - this was good + Pasta Cajun Shrimp - this was very good except it was missing the garlic toast that was supposed to come with it. We didn't see our server again to ask. + Fish tacos - just so-so. There's hardly any fish. It was mostly toppings (slaw, guacamole, sour cream, pico). + Paniolo Salad - this is a salad with steak. It's a decent place to eat. Nothing horrible and nothing special. Steak was seasoned well and huge but had a few spots underdone and quality of meat wasn't great. Mashed potatoes and sautéed veggies were well executed. Steak came out pretty fast so I think it suffered from coming out of the fridge and being cooked immediately. This is one of the sit down restaurants in Kings market. It's a little more upscale but still family friendly with a sports bar feel. Service was very kind though a little slow at first. They did have a group of 25 that night though, so that could explain it. The food came out quick and was pretty tasty. My Cajun shrimp pasta was flavorful and had juicy prawns. My husband and son loved the steak. The steak salad was also raved about. Overall, it's a solid dinner spot if you're staying in Waikoloa. read more

My husband and I had dinner at Fosters Kitchen on our last night in Hawaii. I enjoyed the special and my husband enjoyed the fish & chips. Both were prepared perfectly. Curren, our waiter was very attentive and knowledgeable with us. Olivia, the manager came to our table at the end to see how our dinner was. We appreciated the time she took to talk to us even though it was the end of her shift. The restaurant is small but comfortable and view of the lake was nice. Was really feeling like trying some fresh fish today. Looking around for some options I came across fosters. For the day they had a blue marlin steak with a sesame glaze. It turned out great! We came for steak -- my son's 9th birthday request -- but the real revelation was the blue marlin fresh catch, which might be one of the best fish dishes I've ever had, and my standards are not low. Both my husband and I cleaned our plates! The steak delivered too; my son is convinced it's the best he's ever had and he takes that ranking very seriously. We stopped here on our way back to Kona after a trip to Hawi. I can't say enough for the staff. They went out of their way to make our experience special. My husband and I shared an order of crab cakes and fish and chips, which were delicious. The setting in King's Marketplace was relaxing and we were able to enjoy a hula demonstration outside of the restaurant afterwards. I have had interactions with the owner after confusion on a reservation at his other restaurant and he went out of his way to make sure we were taken care of. Don't miss this one! read more

It's possible that my feelings are clouded by a rough travel day but this was quite a letdown. A lot of the problems actually stemmed from a very haphazard take out production. First off we were missing a couple items from our order. Also the salads had dressings on the side but no lids so by the time they got home, they were dressed anyway. The fish tacos were ok and if I had them for half the price at my local pub I might find it satisfactory. Fish, cabbage, pico(which was really just tomatoes), sour cream. We asked for the habanero oil on the side but even that didn't contribute anything. Super boring and no where near the value. The kids burger with Mac and cheese was disappointing as well. Oddly ununiform patty. The Mac and cheese desperately lacked seasoning. Overall a really disappointing showing. I don't think I will return. read more

Located in the Kings Marketplace, we stop in every time we're up in the area. This trip, we stayed a week within walking distance and had lunch and happy hour 3 times...yeah, creatures of habit. Nice, open space on the water (golf course, not ocean), friendly service and really good grub and brews. Conner was our server 2 of the 3 times and Deb always greeted us with a smile and a "Welcome Back". Big fan of Ola Brewing , started with their hazy IPA. Perfect after a morning of imbibing salt water while body surfing! All 3 times, we gobbled down their fresh fish tacos...mahi. Three grilled corn tortillas with melted three cheese blend, Cajun grilled fresh catch, cabbage, fresh guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo, and finished with scratch habanero oil. These are overfilled delights that only need maybe some Spicy Ninja local hot sauce (the Mauna Magma is a fav!). During our happy hour venture, we did their firecracker wings...habanero, jalapeno and garlic brined wings are marinated then coated in a spicy breading and deep fried. Served with gorgonzola dressing and celery. Meaty and moist with a decent kick...though had to add some of the provided hot sauces. Overall, consistent, good experience. This is a very short walk from the Island Market, so we wanted to give it a try while picking up food. The food was great (fish & chips plus fish tacos) and the wait staff are super nice. There's no outside seating, which was disappointing, but there is a nice view of the little waterway from inside. My brother and his wife made sure I ate at Fosters while on my stay on Big Island. They had been living in the area for several months and said this restaurant was their favorite. We went on a Friday evening, with no wait for a table. Service was excellent. Wava, our server, was a peach and never left us waiting. I ordered the Ahi Stir Fry.. I was impressed with the price (it being lower than the average restaurant) and it definitely fulfilled my craving! The ahi was perfectly seared, with a yummy rice and veggie combo to go with it. I was so happy afterward. My meal truly brought me joy! The atmosphere was inviting for all types, fancy or casual wear both suited this restaurant. Foster's Kitchen was within walking distance to our hotel (plus) and didn't feature live music, at least on the night we ate here (another plus). Although there was a hostess stand outside, it didn't seem to be manned and there was some confusion about how to get seated (minus). Luckily the bartender saw us and another party and shepherded us inside to be seated. Once seated, however, service was friendly and prompt. I ordered the Candied Bacon Chicken Sandwich (recommended by the waitstaff) and my husband got some sort of fish thing (maybe a fish burger?) His fish was moist and cooked perfectly. The candied bacon chicken sandwich was really good though I wish the bacon was sandwich-sized and didn't stick out the sides. For dessert, I got the lilikoi cheesecake, which was to die for and the nearly the best thing I had the entire trip. We went back a couple of nights later and got two Thai chicken salads to go. They were delicious although for $24, I would have liked a little more of everything. Overall, I was pleased with the quality of the food, the menu choices and especially the lilikoi cheesecake. read more
