A lovely restaurant with friendly staff. We went on a Friday night so it was busy and I think they gave our waisteress too many tables. I felt bad for her because she was very friendly. The food was good, the crab cakes were the best. I had the pork chops and they were very salty which worked out for how much I needed salt after my day but might be a bit much for someone else. We were in Waikaloa, King's Shops for work and looking for a place for lunch. Foster's offers on-line ordering. I got their Gumbo bowl over rice. It was delicious. Their grilled cheese had caramelized onions and was such a treat. Really nicely done. I enjoyed it with a cup of their tomato bisque. Great American bistro style food with a local influence. All of my colleagues also enjoyed their selections. We ended up eating here for two lunches. Great service and definitely recommend. read more

We ventured to Hilo from Kona while visiting Kilauea. We were looking for food spots in the area and happened upon Fosters Kitchen. As with Hawaii this restaurant is right up on the waterfront with beautiful views. We appreciated the kind service. It was hot and it's an open air restaurant so it was slightly warm but nothing to complain about as you are in paradise! We ordered the calamari as an appetizer with a few drinks all were wonderful, fresh, and delicious! Where things went off course was our entree's. My wife got the fish and chips, i got the steak (cooked medium) and shrimp, and my son got the fried chicken. The fish and chips tasted like they were frozen and did not have a pleasant taste or texture. The steak was raw and quite chewy, I gave up fighting with it after about 4-5 bites. Shrimp was rubbery and my son's chicken was dry and tough. For the prices we were not pleased with our entree's and that's the only reason for the review, the price doesn't match the quality. The bar seemed to have a bee problem with bee's swarming the bar (about 20-30 bee's). All in all the views are stunning, the staff are kind and welcoming, but the food isn't the best. read more

Lots of parking available in the lot and if you get here at the right time you can get seating either outside or inside along the windows for a view of the water and Mauna Kea. The menu has a good variety for everyone and a daily fish special. We choose the steakhouse burger, kids mac and cheese, and candied bacon chicken sandwich. Everything came quickly and was hot. The kitchen staff must moonlight as magicians because they made all the flavor in our food disappear. I was impressed that they managed to cook up a burger that literally tasted like nothing. This is a beautiful spot, right by the water's. We had a great server name, Bri. She was pleasant, friendly, and attentive. I asked about some food and she highly recommended it and it was definitely delicious. The seafood pastry was the highlight for me. I really enjoyed it. My husband didn't really like the fish or the crab cake, but it was editable. I didn't visit the restroom, but the restaurant was clean, bright, and airy. Convenient walk across the street from the Marriott! Ribs Half - fantastic lilikoi bbq sauce - thankfully the ribs were moist and tender but this sauce could make anything taste amazing. I was worried from previous reviews, but this was the best dish we had! The veggies were decent but that sauce...so so good. 5 stars. Szechuan Ahi Stir-fry - nice seared ahi and veg. We subbed mashed potatoes for rice and it still worked with the dish even though the seaweed salad was sitting on top of the mash. Tasty. 4 stars. Fresh Catch - the marlin was perfectly cooked and the veggies and mash were great but the strawberry slaw tasted fermented. We mentioned the slaw was off since it was pretty bad and they discounted the item. If not for the slaw it would had been an excellent dish. 4 stars. Kids cheeseburger - the meat was good quality but had some chewy pieces that the kiddo didn't love. The bread was a slightly sweet bread and good cheddar cheese. Nice fruit cup. 4 stars. Decided to stop by Foster's after a day at Kua Bay and it was a great experience! I ordered the fish and chips and I've never had fish so lightly fried and delicious in a fish and chips order! I generally like to eat on the healthier side, so it was nice to have that lighter touch instead of deep fried in batter. The staff was very accommodating on where we wanted to sit and Arnold was the best waiter we had our entire Hawaii trip! If I were to open a restaurant tomorrow, he'd be the first person I'd hire for my staff! It was nice to have a meal with a great view of the pond and we enjoyed the laid back atmosphere! When we walked into the restaurant, there was literally two people sitting at tables and they asked us if we had reservations. Felt kind of odd to be asked that, as the host is kind of looking around to see if there was any tables. I had fish and chips. It was really good. The chips could've been hotter. My partner had the pasta with the steak, the steak came out well done, and the pasta was super salty. Had to be sent back. They did comp us one dinner and a dessert however, as the manager stated there was an executive chef there I'd hate to see what his good meals are. Also, there were three other tables you could see sending food back or complaining about the food, mainly I think most of the food was cold where they forgot something to put on the plate. They said they had great garlic bread however it was more like overdone toast with a sprinkle of garlic on it. I would not recommend going here, but I do try to give prices three chances. Food: each time we eat here, the food is fresh and fabulous! The Ono dish was perfectly cooked and our steak pasta was again, tender and perfectly cooked! This is the worst experience we've ever had, not only on this Island, but in the entire state. We even gave them a second chance, hoping the first time, last Thursday night, they just happened to have a terrible staff on. We came in for a drink in the evening, thinking we'd try something different than our usual A-Bay's (which is directly across from them and always fantastic btw) Just wanted to sit at the bar as it looked like there was plenty of room and it wasn't even close to closing time. We opened the door and they literally yelled at us to wait outside?? So we thought it was weird but we did... they finally let us in to the half empty restaurant and said the (empty) bar is open seating, you can sit wherever you like? When we finally got to the bar the bar tender was so unfriendly. She practically threw the menus on the counter, and couldn't even be bothered to smile at us despite us being very friendly. We felt so uncomfortable and unwelcome we decided to just leave. Hoping it was a fluke, we returned last night (Saturday) because it seemed like a nice place for my friends mom and baby to join us. We figured if there was another issue we could go somewhere else near by. Again, we were told to wait outside... being polite we did so, but people kept coming from behind and going in? So my friend, thinking there was some confusion went inside to speak with someone. They again, rather dismissively, told her to wait outside. When she tried to explain that we had been waiting and other groups were walking in and being seated ahead of us, the girl snapped at her and said "I said the hostess will be right out!" And turned her back on her and walked away. It was just too much at this point so we walked across to A-Bay's. Of course they were as welcoming as ever, had fantastic live music, great food and wonderful service, leaving us wondering why we even gave this place a second chance. I honestly almost never write negative reviews, but the treatment we received here was so unbelievably egregious and TWICE I feel I have to warn others not to go here, unless they enjoy being treated terribly. I got a grilled fish sandwich that was a giant one and only a little bit of grilled fish, with a little scoop of garlic mashed potatoes, for $26. My food was OK, nothing terrible, nothing to rave about. They did forget my side of white rice. And my kid ordered barbecued chicken and part of it was nasty. So I appreciate it being easy to order online for takeout, and at prices that are not awful, but the food was inconsistent. read more

Last night we ate at Fosters Kitchen on a whim. We were trying to find another place and gave up, and it was a happy accident! We had 4 appetizers and a drink. Service is excellent and our servers and the host were so kind! The restaurant sits on a lovely pond and overlooks the water, so it has gorgeous views! We ordered the goat cheese bruschetta, the shrimp and pimiento cheese, the crab and cheese stuffed puff pastry, and the hush puppies. Everything was really good, although the stuffed puff pastry was my favorite. I enjoyed my coconut mai Thai! It was super creamy and flavorful. read more

We were lucky and arrived right before the rush at 6:30 and had no problem getting a table. Our server was very nice and they had a good choice of drinks and food. Unfortunately , the drinks came pretty much towards the end of dinner, the waiter apologized for the bar being behind with drinks, but how is the bar dealing with a full restaurant once the place fills up? I had the shrimp and grits, which was very nice. We wouldn't recommend the fish tacos, they were pretty bland and the quack was so brown and discolored, this couldn't have been made fresh just earlier in the evening before dinner time. Smelled and tasted old, so we scratched it off the tacos. Someone in the kitchen needs to make sure to check the plates before they are sent out. So so disappointed. My husband and I came to Kona a few years ago for our anniversary and had eaten here; we remembered it being really good so thought it was worth another try. Definitely mistaken. We weren't greeted upon coming in and just stood there. Then the hostess came over and was extremely grumpy and obviously unhappy to be there. We sat outside at a table, and the vibe was not too bad. Nice bistro lights, on the waterway. Then we sat. And sat. And sat. Eventually our server made his way, probably 10-15 minutes later, so we finally got some water. I asked for a straw. We ordered and I got the fish tacos gluten and dairy free, lemonade, and my husband got the Thai Chicken Salad. The straw never came, even as I watched our server come out with two waters, make eye contact with me and then go back inside with the waters as if he forgot he already brought us some? Then he went to wait on three other tables. Finally I asked a different server and she promptly brought out two straws. Then our food came. Well actually MY food came. And then my husband's came about 5-10 minutes later. A party of two, he got a salad, and they didn't serve them together. Not only that but my fish tacos came with disgusting-looking brown avocado and lime on top. Pretty shocked they served it. I also realized he never told us what the fresh catch was and I am pregnant so wanted to ensure it wasn't a high mercury fish. Welp, it was swordfish--I should have asked prior. I ended up not eating my tacos and my husband tried them and said it tasted like mercury lol. His salad was fine, nothing special and the dressing was really the only flavor on it. Our server also didn't return until a long time later with the so-called scratch made lemonade. It tasted awful. Like flat sprite and fake lemonade flavor. Horrible food and horrible service. We left really disappointed and frustrated to waste money and one our dinners here. I ended up getting food elsewhere. Definitely avoid this spot to save money and time. read more

Our server was notified of the odd soup and offered another dish. It wasn't her fault the cook needs to switch up his recipe and not shake curry powder into the soup. We had a great meal at Foster's! Everything we had was good and everyone on the staff was very attentive--exactly the kind of experience one would want to have. Additionally, they were able to accommodate my gluten-free dietary restriction. Several menu items are listed as being GF. And, they don't advertise it, but they do have a dedicated GF fryer! I had the fish and chips. The cornmeal batter was light and delicious, and the fish was very good--a real treat for someone who has been GF since 2008! A restaurant in the King's shops. It sits right on the water of their central pond. Very nice location and interesting architecture of the restaurant. Seems like they had or could have had a second floor. The staff were all very friendly and outgoing. I enjoyed the haupia colada, very coconutty flavor. The food came out really quickly and had a very nice presentation. The pork chops were a little salty, but very good. I would order them again! The burger lacked seasoning, we added some of their garlic aioli and that made all the difference. We enjoyed this restaurant and would eat here again. read more
