I love to explore neighborhoods when I travel and we were in the Honokowai area of Lāhainā taking in the beautiful ocean views from the Honokowai Beach Park and noticed Pau Bakery across the street. Well they had me at Bakery, great small establishment filled with fresh baked goods packed full of flavor. Some seating inside but essentially a grab and go place. Staff is very friendly and helpful, offering free samples as you peruse the cases filled with both sweet and savory treats as well as mini cakes. Decided to pick up a few sweet items and went with the cinnamon rolls, the coffee cake and the bread pudding. The savory case was filled with house made empanadas of various proteins and vegetables, they looked amazing but figured will have to return for those since we were heading out for the day and had no way to keep them until we got back to the resort. The cinnamon roll was very good, the perfect amount of sweetness combined with cream cheese to make the ultimate icing, and it's not drenched in icing so the ratio of dough to icing was spot on. They are good sized so you could actually share it and still feel like you weren't shorted of deliciousness. The coffee cake was prepared with blueberries and had a streusel type topping, cake was light and flavorful. The bread pudding was tasty, dense and not too sweet, we tried a few bites but will enjoy it more when we get back to our resort and can warm it up a bit. All and all it was a great find in a quiet little beachfront neighborhood. Great place to pick up fresh bakery to have with your coffee in the morning's while taking in the fresh ocean air and the sounds of the waves bringing that Maui zen. If you're ever around here, would STRONGLY recommend the cheesecake. The cheesecake is thick, the crust is even thicker, and the berry glaze adds a nice sweetness that's not too sweet while there are whole blueberries inside to add just a touch of tanginess to some of the bites you take. The pastries on display in the cases all looked delicious and screamed EAT US. I succumb easily to pastry pressure so we got a brownie and a piece of coffee cake (blueberry). The brownie was ooey and gooey with crispy edges. I am not a chocoholic so one bite was good enough for me, though warm and topped with a scoop of ice cream would have been amazing. The coffee cake was oddy devoid of flavor and not something I'd order again. Staff wasn't particularly helpful but maybe it's because they were busy and only had two people behind the counter. We got to Pau around 8am on a Thursday morning and only waited about 10-15 minutes to order and get our food. We ate across the street at the park which was nice. They have a pretty big menu from breakfast and lunch sandwiches, to empanadas, to sweets and pastries. Good coffee menu also. Great experience overall. read more

Located about a mile down from the Times market on Lower Honoapiilani Rd in Kaanapali this little gem I found by chance and SO thankful I did; coincidentally it is located right next to Bad Ass coffee. Pau is Italian owned and Italian operated and I don't think of the several times that I visited did I encounter any one of the staff who didn't have an Italian accent. Pau was amazing in every way; the quality of the coffee, the expertise in which it was prepared and friendliness of the staff. Let's not also forget the quality of their unbelievable pastry selection and empanadas. I could sit there all day and eat the empanada's; I only sampled the chicken and beef and both were equally delicious!! . Go online and take a look at their menu as they have other options as well regarding food to eat for breakfast etc. Now I would be remiss if I didn't mention that I have been to Bad Ass coffee on previous visits before and I absolutely have no idea why people continue to wait in long lines at Bad Ass when in my opinion Pau's quality and service is far superior... it can't be because of price as a 12 ounce latte with a double shot of espresso is only $5.50 at Pau. I honestly feel you will not regret giving ' this little slice of Italy' a shot and when you do I think there's a good chance you'll be hooked liked I am. "Also make sure you get there fairly early and grab a warm fresh baked loaf of sourdough bread...SO GOOD" They open at 7am and close at 2pm... small parking area but a a lot of people coming and going so it's pretty easy to grab a spot. read more

This is a cute and modern bakery in Lahaina. We went here for breakfast and got three Argentinian empanadas for $18. One empanada is $6.50 so you get a small discount. We got 2 ham and cheese, and one beef. These are the BEST EMPANADAS I've ever had! They were so flaky and buttery, with just the right amount of filling. The ham and cheese was slightly overpowered with cheese. Nonetheless, it was yummy. We also had a cinnamon roll $7. It was giant. It was fresh, not the best cinnamon roll I've had, but not bad. We had to wait a little while for our orders as this place was busy. Make sure to go next door to Bad Ass Coffee Co. They serve up some of the best coffee, to go with these yummy pastries. We came back THREE times on a six day trip. We actually walked over from Honua Kai to get Badass coffee but they were doing renovations. This place is right next door so we thought, "why not?!" And we were not let down! First day we shared a ham and cheese empanada and both got cortados with almond milk (I think this was both of our favorite meals). Another day we shared a Lilikoi bar and prosciutto toast-which came with a cute lightly dressed side salad. The wife and I noticed that this establishment was located near the old location of the Farmer's Market, which closed a year ago. There is also a Mexican food truck in the same lot. The establishment is very nice inside, and the ambiance is perfect for dining, mingling, or just meeting up with your friends. I had the Pau (VEGAN) Empanada and a mocha coffee with oat milk. The empanada was room temperature, but once heated up, it was pretty good. The mocha coffee definitely needs to be hotter, but I understand the need not to make it too hot, since this is Maui we are talking about...LOL! This bakery is right next door to our favorite coffee shop, so we had to check them out and what a find that turned out to be! We've been here twice and have had the smoked salmon sandwich, which my wife raved about, the chocolate scone, which had so many chocolate pieces throughout, it was like a dessert! Today, leaving for the airport, we shared a cinnamon roll and that was delicious as well, so we will definitely be back on our next trip here. The shop is nice and clean and the displays are neat and well marked, so you know what you're going to get when you order. The only thing I would like to see different would be for the people working there to be a little more personable and appreciative. Oooh la la....we have an amazing new bakery on the west side! The decor is modern and welcoming, with art from a local artist (Melody Guini) making a beautiful and creative splash of colour on the walls. I received a friendly welcome from the staff and there is plenty of space to wait for your order, or sit and eat at one of the high tops against the back wall. If they provided more chairs/tables it might be nice, but that may come as there is room and they are still in the soft opening phase. They offer cool drinks and Bad Ass Coffee is next door if you want caffeine to accompany your bakery items. The food definitely has the WOW factor. We love empanadas and Miss Arepa on the west side and Momona in Kahului are good but this bakery is the best! Crunchy pastry outside, soft tasty filling, they deserve 10/10. Spinach empanada - so full, and luscious, and it actually tastes of spinach without too much spice to detract. Crunchy and luscious Cheese and Ham empanada - thinly sliced ham in an unctuous cheese sauce, you really taste the ingredients and the sauce is so moreish I also bought a couple of cakes for dessert (if they last that long!): Lemon Meringue - short pastry, sweet piped meringue and a beautiful lemon filling Fruit Tart - delicious custard with short pastry topped with a variety of fruit, although not enough fruit on the top according to Hubby who likes his fruit :) The prices are competitive for Maui, and the cakes are actually less than you would pay at Safeway yet much tastier. They are nicely packaged for gifting too. I would love to see larger sizes for celebration cakes :) While they don't currently offer Kamaaina rates they may once they are fully open and breaking even, which I look forward to. However I will still visit as their pricing is very competitive and their food definitely amazing. The coffee is just as good as the coffee shop next door. If you like passion fruit like I do, the likikoi bar will ruin your life it's so good. Also really enjoyed the pistachio croissant.
