The owner, Jeffrey, apparently feels smug enough about the success of his business that he feels that he can, on the whim of his unpredictable temperement, pick and choose his customers. I am not sure how I failed to pass muster in this discriminatory process. I have long hair, but I can't possibly be the only Hippy in Berkeley. I can't imagine what it was. But I'd done business with the man a few times (was actually having him rebuild my car bit by bit) and came in one morning a few days ago with a perfectly reasonable and reasonably politely and well articulated business proposition; I was interested in topping up my fluids (oil and transmission). Really a perfectly normal thing to ask a mechanic. The man turned on my like a grizzly bear and threatened to call the police if I did not get off his property. I am not sure who else has experienced one of these bizarre outbursts, but I will state definitively that the man is temperamentally unpredictable. And put out that warning to all future customers. Another peculiar thing he does, that I always found unnerving, since I do not really know him, is recount his sexual exploits. Absolutely no need for that! I am sure I am not the only person who noticed that. Definitely, go for a mechanic who has reasonable control of himself; temperamentally and otherwise. Also, I will add, when someone flies off the handle like that, I also sometimes have a suspicion that it might be defensive behavior, intended to cover something up. My hunch now is that faulty work may possibly have been done. They recently, for example, replaced a starter, which still isn't turning over that smoothly. Jeffrey may have noticed this when he started my car, before flying into this possibly theatrical display. I will definitely have their work checked. read more

I have been going to Patti's for almost ten years. This is a woman owned and family run shop that is honest, trustworthy and reliable. They have treated me like family and I have used their office as a resource when I have lived in other states to call about what services another mechanic is offering to see if they agree they are necessary. They treat their employees well, are environmentally conscious, and are welcoming to people from all walks of life. I have had them work on two of my vehicles and they have always helped me keep them in great shape. Definately check them out and get an estimate. I can't say enough good things about Patti's. Last week, my beloved little honda civic overheated on me on the side of the 880 in Fremont, pretty far from home. I have AAA and had it towed to the nearest shop. A few hours later they told me my head gasket was blown and it would cost 2,000 to fix. They warned me about driving off the lot but I was determined to have the trusting guys at Patti's look at it and give me a second opinion. After I brought my car in this morning, they ran some diagnostics and said my head gasket was fine. The issue was my radiator cap was not the right size for my radiator so it was messing with the coolant and the pressure inside the radiator. Cost me a whole $84 bucks (which included labor)! Much better than the $2,000 I was quoted for my "blown head gasket". Patti's has always treated me with respect and never has tried to sell me something I don't need. They also put up with all of my questions and seem to enjoy describing the inner workings of my engine to me :) Overall I would recommend this shop to anyone who is looking for a trust worthy, fair, and friendly business. read more

Mr Patti is awesome! My Honda car failed the smog check due to the check light, so I brought it to a auto service to fix it. They say I need to replace the filler pipe and asked me for $520 ($170 for part + $350 for = labor). I suspected the labor fee is a little high, and called Patti's Auto Care for an estimate. He said replacing the filler pipe was quite easy, and it shouldn't cost more than $150 for labor fee. So I brought my car to Patti's Auto Care. After looking at the original filler pipe, he said that it seemed like there was nothing wrong with it and instead fixed the problem by tightening the gas cap. The check light went off!!! And the best part is he charge me NOTHING for doing so. I recommend Mr Patti's service to all of my friends who live nearby Berkeley. read more

After repairing our car, they were able to tell us other items on our car that need attention. Nothing that is vital, but very good to know. I blew the head gasket in my black Mazda MX-5. I got it towed over here after speaking to the owners. They took care of my head gasket, and we did the leaking engine seals while we were at it. My parents have had the same mechanic for 40 years. I also used to make fun of them that they go to the same guy over and over again. But after owning 2 or 3 cars of my own and getting ripped off by one dealer after another, I figured out why they did. When you find someone in the auto repair industry you can trust, you have struck gold. Patti and Jeffrey are pure gold. They always seem concerned about your welfare and often refuse to take your money if they don't have a good reason for doing so. I was just walking my dog and Mr Patti was smiling at Buddy and being so friendly. I was actually headed to the locksmith around the corner to see if he'd help me fix my keyless remote for my Toyota rav4. Since Mr Patti greeted us so warmly, I decided to see if he may help me with the remote. He fooled around with it for a few minutes while a lady who seemed to work there, too, was petting Buddy and saying how beautiful his coat is. I was so surprised when I got home -- he fixed it! He did some kind of magic to it! I'd already taken it to radio shack and they couldn't get it to work. It was just so kind of him to take time out of his day to help me -- and at no charge! Two nights ago coming home from the Airport I got a flat tire on my Subaru outback. I replaced the tire w/ the temp mini-tire and all was well until the car started knocking and later jolting every second or so on the bridge. I got off the first exit, at which point the the car drove like the transmission was ready to drop at any time. I got a cab home that night. Next day I called Patti's and asked if I could bring it in (they're one of the few shops that's open on Saturday), went to the car, started it, and tried to see if it was drivable or needed to be towed - it drove OK. Stopped by Patti's anyway to leave it for a check. After describing the problem to them, the mechanic told me that on All-wheel drive cars, the tires have to match pretty well (which is why you have to change them in pairs). When I put the small spare tire on, it started causing problems for the AWD system, causing the transmission to slip and slide and knock. He suggested I replace the tire immediately w/o driving it anymore and see if it was OK. I did, it was OK, and I was very happy to get out of the whole thing so cheaply. They were like the Tappit brothers - really awesome. Will definitely take the car there for any repairs. read more
