I've been wanting to visit Pasture PDX for a long time, but the limited lunch-only hours made it difficult to eat here during my previous visits to Portland over the years. This time around, we happened to be shopping nearby before lunch and were able to make it in. This was at around noon on Saturday and it wasn't too busy at all even with the great sunny weather. We were only a bit peckish at the time, since we had just eaten three pints of fresh Hood strawberries, so we opted to share one sandwich. I quickly placed the order at the single kiosk (only kiosk ordering is available) and the sandwich arrived soon afterwards. Interestingly enough the chef somehow knew we were sharing the sandwich and had it split into two wrapped packages instead of a single one. Really nice gesture and shows how attentive he is. Now the sandwich quality, unfortunately, didn't meet my expectations. The O.G. ($17) - The sandwich first starts with a nice and crusty Ciabatta roll bun from Dos Hermanos. It's served slightly toasted warm and has plenty of chewy developed flavor inside. The bottom bun is slathered with some mayo. For this sandwich, putting the mayo on the bottom is actually really important and done correctly. This allows the creaminess of the mayo to dampen some (but not enough, as will be described later) of the slaw on top of the pastrami. I tried eating the sandwich both right-side-up and upside-down and it's a totally different eating experience due to the sandwich construction. On top of the mayo are probably ten thinly shaved slices of pastrami. It's smoky and seasoned well with plenty of peppery flavor, but it doesn't stand out very much especially due to the onslaught of slaw. To identify the pastrami flavors at all, I had to remove pieces from the sandwich to eat individually. By far the most numerous element of the sandwich is the banh mi inspired slaw. It basically consists of a tiny amount of small cubed carrots, pickled to give a little acidity and extra crunch, a bit of red onion, tiny pieces of cucumber and an overwhelming amount of crunchy cabbage. Think of a real banh mi - the large sticks of cucumber and the julienned carrot and daikon, all distinct and delicious. That's not this slaw. In this slaw, everything is all mixed together into a blend that muddles the ingredients together into a mess. The slaw is dressed in a ton of hazelnut chili crisp. I actually couldn't identify the flavor as hazelnut, instead thinking it was peanut. It's smoky and only slightly spicy, but it's also really acidic, really overpowering. It's a ridiculously strong flavor that completely dominates everything else in the sandwich. As I stated before, I literally couldn't taste the pastrami at all over the acidic chili crisp and slaw. The meat gets completely lost. I'm really wondering if the chef only read the Acid section of Samin Nosrat's seminal book? I'm not a fan of this sandwich at all. It's lopsided in construction, way too much chili crisp and slaw, muddling all of the flavors underneath the slaw. There was so much chili oil that it made a large puddle underneath my sandwich and I had to reorganize and fold the butcher paper to prevent the oil from running out and staining the table. I had to do this several times while eating, balancing the paper after every couple of bites. The slaw pooled out of the sandwich, falling onto the paper, yet it was so runny I had to use to fork to pick up the pieces, lest I cover my hands in spicy oil. Looking around, I wasn't the only one to run into this issue. If I have to use a fork to eat a sandwich, yet still have a mess on my hands, well this shop has lost the plot. I'm also confused how exactly is this sandwich is "banh mi" inspired. The only overlap is the pitiful amount of pickled carrots. Nothing else here goes in banh mi. It's their take on it, but fails to capture the essence. (2/5) I like sandwiches that have good flavor and balanced construction. The sandwich I received at Pasture PDX was anything but. I must compliment Pasture on this fantastic smoked duck with duck sausage and stuffing offering for Thanksgiving holiday. It surpassed all of our expectations and was an excellent low-effort meal for our small family. As i was setting up to roast it, i thought the stuffing looked like nothing much, but once basted and crisped by the duck fat, wow! Transcendent! And the sausage was subtly spiced and tender. This place has been on my radar for soooooo so long and I am so very happy it stayed there until I found the time to visit them with a proper empty stomach - YUM. I'm getting hungry again just thinking about their hearty, good-quality sandwiches. Counter service was easy to navigate and there was plenty of interior-only seating for us to choose from. I got the C.O.G. It was one of the better meals of my life. - It had chicken, cabbage, pickled peppers, pickled, onions, pickled cabbage, chili oil, and aoli. - The cabbage was fantastic. I am often hesitant to order things with cabbage because sometimes I don't like cabbage. I don't like when it's watery or has a distinct cabbage-y flavor. This didn't. It was just crunchy and satisfying. It kinda served as a vessel for delivering the other flavors. - The flavors were intense. Which is what I like. Lots of acid coming through from the pickled peppers, onions and carrots. That was probably the primary flavor. I actually am usually not a fan of pickled flavors either, but this time I was. - The sandwich was properly salted. Which is essential and underrated. Salt often just brings out the flavors of the other ingredients rather than making it actually taste salty. This sandwich had enough salt to do that, and then went a bit beyond so that you can taste some actual saltiness in the bite, which I thought was just the right amount. It was more of a secondary or tertiary flavor in the background, but it was also enough to notice. - I really liked how the fat from the chili oil and aoli balanced and mellowed things out while also providing a nice mouthfeel. - The chicken was fantastic. Which makes sense since they're also a butcher shop (I think? Wikipedia and some other sources say they are.). Very tender. Seems like they sous vide it. - The bread was also very good. Fresh. Soft in the inside, nice thin crunch on the exterior. It was so good that I ordered a second after I finished the first. Life is short. They say you should do things that make you happy. Well, I enjoyed the second as I was eating it but felt extremely full afterwards, so I wouldn't do that again. Which is to say that the first sandwich really did a good job of filling me up. Which is important, because I eat a lot and have a big appetite. So at $16.50, that's an incredible value if you ask me. read more

They have two bread options and were out of one the day we went but didn't matter. Tried the meatball sandwich which has sliced meatball meat and lots of slaw and some cheese. Husband really enjoyed it. I got a chicken and bacon sandwich, I left off some of the toppings and they were okay with that. Good quality meat and it tasted good. Generous sized sandwiches but did finish them. They don't offer half sizes. The only thing that could have been better was the service. That day they didn't have a dedicated person taking orders. So you had to wait for one of the two people prepping food. The guy who took our order was moments before handling raw chicken. This little sandwich shop/butcher shop has been on my list of places to try for a long time. We finally made it! From reading Yelp reviews I got the impression the sandwiches were going to be huge, so my husband and I split the OG (pastrami in a bahn mi style with chili oil & hazelnuts). It wasn't quite that big but it was ok. It left room for a new gelato place we wanted to try after lunch. The space isn't very big and the tables against the wall are wedged so close together that we didn't attempt to sit at one of the empty tables for two. It would've been impossible. I felt kind of bad taking up a larger table since there were only two of us. I enjoyed the OG. It wasn't your typical deli pastrami sammy. The chili oil gave it a spicy edge. I liked the bread too, which was warm even though it's listed as a cold sandwich on the menu. read more

I believe my favorite sandwich shop. I have tried 3 or 4 now and all have been bomb. The cold sandwiches start around $14 and it's 2 or 3 more bucks for hot sandwiches. I started with the OG Bahnstrami Sandwich, which I very much enjoyed though I thought it was a tad too saucy. I have also tried the Cubano, Toro Braised Beef Adobo, and one of the cold ones that was like an Italian. I also tried a bite of their burger which was thick, juicy and amazing. All of them were excellent but I think I prefer their cold sandwiches a bit more and still have several sandwiches left on my list to try. The inside is pretty small, like a clean cafe and is always bumping some classic golden era hip hop. You order up at the front counter and they bring your food out. They have WiFi but it's spotty a lot of the time. Overall, great sandwiches and beer, and you can also buy meat or sausages to take home as they are a butcher shop. read more

Ordered their Bento Box for take out and really enjoyed it. My wife and I split it and found the variety of items creative, well balanced, and well made. I was also impressed that the presentation was so nice. $35 is a good deal for the quality of the food. There was sausage, salad, steak (beautifully cooked medium rare), greens, some lovely mustard. We also tried their pastrami sandwich on some beautifully marbled rye bread. We arrived a little early for our pick up (you designate your time for pick up when you order), but when the staff found out, they prioritized finishing our box, which we really appreciated. The reason I gave this place a 4/5 is because the food was amazing, but the person taking our order just seemed very bothered and was not that welcoming. Seemed a bit uptight as it was our first time there. The atmosphere of the place was pretty nice, very high ceilings. The seats were a bit cramped in there, but since it wasn't too busy it didn't bother us that much. The sandwhich that I got was "the toro." On a quick trip to Portland, we came here and were really impressed by the food. The sandwich had a decent amount of meat and was tender and flavorful. In addition, the space was open, clean, and comfortable. The cashier was also friendly and made recommendations for us. I've been patiently waiting and waiting and waiting for Pasture to open their own brick and mortar after having their pastrami sandwiches at their various pop ups. I stopped by today during my visit to Portland and was happy to find that they still serve pastrami, but also other sandwiches as well! The Banhstrami was delicious as ever, but seeing mortadella on the menu, I HAD to order The Classic (I don't make the rules okay). The Classic had mortadella, salami, and swiss along with some sort of slaw that made it very enjoyable. Didn't come served on ciabatta though like their previous pastrami offerings, but I didn't even miss it. I'm so glad to see Pasture doing well, and I can't wait to come back for their dinner/wine menu. You can also purchase different meats and sausages by the pound if you don't want to commit to an entire sandwich, but I'm telling you the sandwiches are amazing. read more

Pasture operates as butcher shop, serves hot and cold Sandwiches, and has some awesome natural wine bottles for sale. I got the CAReuben, their Reuben sandwich and it was divine. I would give them 3.5 stars if that was an option. Got the chicken bahn mi & burger. My partner liked his chicken sandwich, but the burger was too undercooked for my liking. It also needed a little bit of salt. It was cold inside unfortunately. I get it, people with good beef want to show it off, and I'm totally fine with a medium / between medium rare and medium burger, but the cold beef burger wasn't for me. I told them and they said "that's how we do it". They did offer a refund so we'll see if that comes through or not. Maybe a bit overpriced too. The chicken amount was pretty small for a $17 sandwich.
