Not sure when all this changed but: 1) now you order at a counter and get your food at the counter; a waiter does not take your order nor serve you nor bring you your utensils; 2) your fancy beverages come in to-go cups rather than in proper ceramic mugs or similar; 3) the quality of the food has gone d-o-w-n. For the price, absolutely not worth it. Sad. For a better experience at the same price point, go to Jam on Hawthorne or even Juniors on SE 12th. It's awesome to see the collaboration between Bread and Ink Cafe with Waffle Window. You order at the front, sit down, and bust yourself. The brisket hash was hearty. The farm fusion wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be given the thrown on spinach and cherry tomatoes. It's nice that there was vegan batter though . We were headed to a highly rated and popular Italian restaurant on Valentine's Day for a light dinner before a concert at Artichoke Music. But, because parking on/around Hawthorne is atrociously difficult we had to park several blocks away. As we began our several block walk, we spied Bread and Ink, and made the spontaneous decision to eat there instead. And, we're so glad we did. The pesto rotini with grilled chicken was delicious. The fruit salad was equally delicious. We very much appreciated the low noise level, that's uncommon these days, which allowed us to converse in a normal tone of voice. They were open and not busy around 10:25am on a Saturday, so we stopped in for food. The food is American diner quality and not something I would go out of my way to return for. The hashbrowns were very thin and dry, the ELO scramble was bland, didn't even taste pepper in it at first bite. The waffle was messy for a kid, the PB never firmed up leading me to believe it's PB sauce, but she loved every bite. They are not a table service restaurant. This place really surprised me. Everybody's super nice and it was really quiet. But that's what makes my head waitresses a little quirky but that's what makes it fun. I totally expected this to be one of those half-assed breakfast joints that charges top dollar because they're in the Hawthorne district. What an amazing surprise. They're biscuits and gravy is some of the best I've ever had in Portland. Better than grits and gravy, better than gravy over on Mississippi Even better than pine State. They make their biscuits fresh every morning and they're gravy fresh everyday. My wife got the Caesar salad with chicken and they actually have anchovy in the Caesar salad, you know, like a real Caesar salad. Unfortunately, I was almost done before I thought to get a picture. It was terrific! To perfectly poached eggs, alot of chopped brisket hunks of meatless that was tender, juicy and moist. Nice chunks of roasted sweet potatoes & potatoes with poblano peppers and onions. It's a favorite for me. I may try their other brisket offerings the next time we're in town. A cute dining area! The smell of waffles is immaculate as soon as you walk in. You place your order at the front & they give you a buzzer as soon as your food is ready, then you're good to go! We use to love the waffle window now the two are combined (waffle window and bread and ink)-they have two menus with some of the same dishes not sure where the distinction isand the prices have gone a bit crazy.....23.95 for chicken and waffles.......it was decent but nothing great so that is why they get two starts, food is about. 3.5 but their prices are just kinda funny. 2 waffles and 2 flat pieces of fried chicken for that price with a very basic dining hall that I have to pick up and am expected to bus my table for is truly comical. When you visit your old stompin' grounds and a favorite restaurant, but things have changed so much that it is not what you remember or what you expected. Gone are the days of table service. Now you walk in, mosey up to the counter, pull a menu and place your order. Then you get one of those buzzer things and when it goes off you go to the counter and get it yourself. They can't even deliver your breakfast to your table. Then to top it all off they have the nerve to ask for a tip. That's not how this works and sorry I left none. They use the excuse that they don't have the staff. Well, it's because you don't want to pay them what they're worth now so you skimp while compromising service. Don't even ask me to bus my table. Now let's get to the breakfast. 2 eggs over, roasted potatoes, sourdough. The eggs were fine but the potatoes were undercooked and flavorless. With coffee you just charged me 15 bucks for no service. It's pretty off putting to see such a weird change in such a classic Portland restaurant but I get it, the industry is changing. (Which no notice was given on ingredients they were out of; yet upset when we asked for them since they were disclosed on the menu. I was under the impression that we paid for those ingredients to be present.) Male waiter( possible manager or lead) In a more cheerful tone and upbeat stride. He shouted "oh no no dont worry you stay right there im bringing this over to ya dont even get up!!" To a different group of individuals that was sitting at a table right next to us. But worse, on the Tuesday of #PortlandBurgerWeek, despite being one of the places on the Burger Week list, THEY RAN OUT OF BURGERS around 7:00 today. So they just closed down the kitchen two hours early. Sorry Charlie, it's a pity you spent time waking from residential parking spaces. No notice, no burger for you, no waffle for you. Burger week failure IMO. Certainly an ample and nice burger. Normally I can easily eat the burger without condiments if there are a lot of things on it but I found this burger really needed one. If the kitchen is letting black charred bacon leave the kitchen, I think that they need to be better at servicing their customers. It's a pay at counter, pick up your own food and beverages and bus your own table kind of place. The food is pricey - $15 for huckleberry pancakes, two eggs and choice of meat (bacon, sausage or ham). Might go back to try the waffles. The cute little cafe is so Portland.. a split space, half restaurant, half take out window, so Portland... They know how to make an omelette, which is a lost art... Incredible breakfast! I had the garden frittata (minus the brisket)and my son had a spinach and cheese omelette. The homemade whole grain wheat bread and strawberry preserve was a perfect start as we waited for our main entree. My frittata had brocolli, zucchini, mushrooms and cheese. Perfectly cooked with a nice crisp edge to the frittata and the flavors of seasoning were very complimentary. I had the roasted potatoes, again a delicious blend of seasonings and cooked just right. My son had the hashbrowns with his omelette and he ate every bite down to the last crumb. Coffee was good and the customer service was exemplary. While you can order wafflestop from bread and ink, you cannot order bread and ink from wafflestop. They will ask where you want to sit, so I would suggest sitting at bread and ink if you want more savory dishes. There are many omelette choices, waffle and pancakes galore. My husband ordered a Bloody Mary, breakfast skillet, and I ordered a spinach mushroom omelette. Our friends ordered chicken and waffles, a hash dish, and a sweet strawberry waffle from waffle stop. The skillet does not come in a skillet. They will make it for you and place it on a dish. My husband said it was delicious. My dish came with a choice of roasted potatoes, hash or grilled polenta, I chose the potatoes. This place isn't as busy as most pdx breakfast places, so it will be worthwhile to make it your 2nd alternative if screen door is packed to the max. read more
