The food at Bread and Ink Cafe was delicious. The prices were affordable. This is a cute breakfast spot that has nice views of Hawthorne

We were headed to a highly rated and popular Italian restaurant on Valentine's Day for a light dinner before a concert at Artichoke Music. But, because parking on/around Hawthorne is atrociously difficult we had to park several blocks away. As we began our several block walk, we spied Bread and Ink, and made the spontaneous decision to eat there instead. And, we're so glad we did. The pesto rotini with grilled chicken was delicious. The fruit salad was equally delicious. We very much appreciated the low noise level, that's uncommon these days, which allowed us to converse in a normal tone of voice. The staff was friendly and prompt.

My friend brought me here for a brunch let me say, I am not a breakfast person but this place right here, was cute. It did what it was supposed to do. The food was delicious but could use a little more seasoning. I enjoyed my waffle and the bacon was chefs kiss. Upon finding an ant in my drink they could had done a better job at customer servicing but instead my drink was dump out and remade. Like what happened to "ma'm let's give you an extra drink"... sorry for your troubles; lol wishful thinking

It's awesome to see the collaboration between Bread and Ink Cafe with Waffle Window. You order at the front, sit down, and bust yourself. The brisket hash was hearty. The farm fusion wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be given the thrown on spinach and cherry tomatoes. It's nice that there was vegan batter though . Definitely popular on a Sunday!

They were open and not busy around 10:25am on a Saturday, so we stopped in for food. The food is American diner quality and not something I would go out of my way to return for. The hashbrowns were very thin and dry, the ELO scramble was bland, didn't even taste pepper in it at first bite. The waffle was messy for a kid, the PB never firmed up leading me to believe it's PB sauce, but she loved every bite. They are not a table service restaurant. You order at the till, get a number and find a table, and pick the food up from the counter. It's more cafeteria feels to it than restaurant feels..

This place really surprised me. Everybody's super nice and it was really quiet. But that's what makes my head waitresses a little quirky but that's what makes it fun. I totally expected this to be one of those half-assed breakfast joints that charges top dollar because they're in the Hawthorne district. What an amazing surprise. They're biscuits and gravy is some of the best I've ever had in Portland. Better than grits and gravy, better than gravy over on Mississippi Even better than pine State. They make their biscuits fresh every morning and they're gravy fresh everyday. My wife got the Caesar salad with chicken and they actually have anchovy in the Caesar salad, you know, like a real Caesar salad. The chicken was grilled over what looked like charcoal and was phenomenal. I can't recommend this place enough. Give it a try

Food was yummy! Ordered an omelette with spinach and mushrooms with a side of cheesy hash browns and whole grain bread. Let me tell you..... it was so filling and delicious. Austin ordered a ham and cheese waffle that came with bacon and eggs. Food came out pretty fast. It was difficult to find parking on this street considering there's so many breakfast cafes but we got lucky and stumbled upon this restaurant. Def glad we came in & hope to visit when back in Portland

This is a casual eatery with lots of sweet & savory waffles to choose from. You order at the counter, pick up your food yourself, and bus your own tables. My son had chicken & waffle--both the chicken and waffle were cooked to perfection but the flavor was just a tad bland. I had a sweet waffle with caramel sauce, bananas, ice cream, and whipped cream. It was very good!

Dungeness Crab Eggs Benedict. Highly recommend! Tons of real crab.

Had the Dungeness Crab Eggs Benedict this morning. Tons of fresh crab on it. The owner was lovely. Had an excellent sense of humor. The restaurant was quite clean. The food came out quick, hot and fresh. I highly recommend this joint!

A cute dining area! The smell of waffles is immaculate as soon as you walk in. You place your order at the front & they give you a buzzer as soon as your food is ready, then you're good to go! I ordered the Green tea mint lemonade and it was very refreshing! I also ordered the Liege waffles with fresh strawberries and lemon curd and lettt me tell you. It was an explosion of fruity goodness! 7/10. Would definitely come back!

Delicious food, friendly staff. The huckleberry pancakes are my favorite! We were in town for 4 days & ate here twice!! Will definitely go back next time we are in town!

In case you needed help discerning which Hawthorne area DD restaurants were ghost kitchens.

My partner and I came here for breakfast a week or so ago and it was hugely disappointing. It's pretty off putting to see such a weird change in such a classic Portland restaurant but I get it, the industry is changing. I'm okay ordering at the counter, picking up etc. but I'll be honest, 17-20+ for an entree is not a good look when the portions are meager, come out pretty cold and "service" is ordering from someone that barely even acknowledges your presence. I can sort of respect listing the ghost kitchens they represent on the door, but why am I paying inflated, delivery app prices for dine in? I paid 21.50 for Brisket Benedict and I didn't even get a nice smothering of Hollandaise. Even Jam has better portion/price. As someone who used to come here with my family (a staple dinner spot), it feels disingenuous to continue calling this place Bread & Ink when it's strayed so far from what it once was.

Sad looking fruit cup that we paid an extra $2.00 for as a substitution for potatoes.

We got seated right away, the hostess was friendly and mentioned the birthday listed on the reservation. To start, we ordered two cocktails, the beef tartare, and the shishitos peppers. The beef tartare was incredibly fresh and flavorful and the mustard vinaigrette was the perfect touch. The blistered shishitos were good, however, they were underwhelming compared to everything else and we probably wouldn't order them again. For our entree, we shared the Brandt Ranch Ribeye which was phenomenal - definitely one of our top 5 steaks we've ever had. We prefer medium rare and it was cooked perfectly with just the right amount of crème fraiche to not overpower the flavor of the steak. Plus, the bacon vinaigrette went very well with the entire meal. We were incredibly impressed with the meal and the atmosphere, and we'd join again for sure. The area in which our experience lacked was the service, which was disappointing and didn't make us feel great ordering anything else. After we got our appetizers, and then entree, we were not checked on once and I had to wave down our server for another round of drinks. At the same time, he was supposed to get us a water refill which we never ended up getting. Our server didn't mention anything in regards to a birthday, never asked how our cocktails or food was, checked on every table around us (besides us) and we didn't even get a thank you as we passed him heading out the door. Because I've consistently heard amazing things about Laurelhurst, I'll take this as a fluke because I definitely believe in second chances, especially when the food was that good, but I hope the next server we get is more attentive and friendly. Neither of us would expect a birthday beverage or dessert, but after dining at several places where they offer a glass of champagne, a small dessert, etc. it definitely stands out when an establishment like this doesn't offer or acknowledge a celebration. Till next time - Cheers

It was a great place to slow down, enjoy good food, and spend time together. The smoked brisket hash was the standout. It came with tender brisket, eggs, breakfast potatoes, peppers, onions, and vegetables. The flavors worked really well together. It was hearty, flavorful, and had something different in almost every bite. We also tried the burger and fries. They were simple, solid, and satisfying. The fries had a nice crisp, and the burger was a good choice for a classic brunch or lunch option. I also really appreciated the non-alcoholic drink selection. A lot of places treat zero-proof drinks like an afterthought, but here they actually had fun options. The Phony Espresso Negroni was a great non-alcoholic cocktail and made the meal feel special without needing alcohol.
