Been a couple years but they're still delicious and generous. fine chicken and gravy, plenty of well0rowned potatoes, eggs a little cool and also the biscuit, But it is a hefty biscuit. Different set-up as you order at the counter then they beep you to come up when your plate's ready. (The place also serves as a good pick-up for 6 or so other "restaurants.") Friendly service, well-lit place. Scott got their basic breakfast also with generous portions, like4 sausage links. Good windows, light and colorful phot read more

Smushburger aka Bread & Ink sent me what should have been a burger with bacon, veggies and fries. I got no bacon, no fries and enough lettuce to feed a herd of cows. Thanks for looking out for my health I guess, no refund from Uber Eats for the missing fries. There's a reason Bread & Ink has gone downhill as other reviews prove. We stopped in before a show at the Hawthorn Theater. We haven't been there in years and it's still so good! I ordered the Brisket Sandwich with the Caesar salad. The meat was moist and perfectly dressed. My partner got the crab cakes. His were crispy and flavorful. The waitress was nice and helpful. Overall awesome experience. read more

Underwhelming. I've been going to Bread and Ink for 40 years. The last 15 or so I haven't, for a number of reasons. Today we decided to give it a try; I missed its almost French atmosphere of a cozy, well-appointed bistro with tablecloths, friendly wait staff in white aprons, and really good food, especially breakfasts. I didn't expect it to be the exact same experience--it's been a while, after all--but I didn't expect...this. Everything about the place from the outside looks just the same but inside everything is different: You now order at the counter, get your coffee and silverware at another counter, wait for a buzzer of all things to go off, and go back to the counter to get your meal yourself. No tablecloth, no wait staff, no nothing, and the ambiance is not even cafe-like. It's coffee stand-like. I have been at food carts with better surroundings. Yes, it's tidy, and that's about it. And it's become a DoorDash place; while we were there, a veritable line of bored drivers waited for bagged orders from no less than five "restaurants" on DoorDash itself operating from the same kitchen, as a large ATTENTION DOORDASH DRIVERS sign helpfully pointed out at the register. And the food is underwhelming, too. I ordered biscuits and gravy with two eggs over medium. We walked our breakfast back to the table (sigh) and discovered that I'd paid $20-plus dollars for two pale eggs over medium on one plate, a thick white gravy-covered biscuit on another, with nothing else--nothing to make it look appetizing, no garnish of any kind at all. The biscuit was well-made, crisp on the outside, fluffy within, but the gravy was thicker with flour than the thickest gravy I've ever had, and not in a pleasant way. My husband has a (non-anaphylactic) soy allergy and despite assurances that the food was soy-free, he got soy'ed from his breakfast scramble and was in the bathroom the minute we got home. Essentially we paid bistro prices for coffee shop food, and not great coffee shop food at that. Not terrible, but absolutely not for what they want for it. I am deeply disappointed. We're not going back. read more

Sadly, my nostalgia for the Bread & Ink of old lured me in for a solo breakfast. Alas, no table service and I had to order before seating and got a buzzer to let me know when my food was ready. I ordered a poached egg, potatoes and bacon and got a fully cooked egg and potatoes that were cold. I saved my delicious biscuit for last, but it was not just room temperature but quite cold as if it came from the refrigerator. No chance of putting butter on that. Sorry to have to let you go Bread & Ink but thank you for years of good memories prior. read more

My friend brought me here for a brunch let me say, I am not a breakfast person but this place right here, was cute. It did what it was supposed to do. The food was delicious but could use a little more seasoning. I enjoyed my waffle and the bacon was chefs kiss. Upon finding an ant in my drink they could had done a better job at customer servicing but instead my drink was dump out and remade. Like what happened to "ma'm let's give you an extra drink"... sorry for your troubles; lol wishful thinking read more

It's awesome to see the collaboration between Bread and Ink Cafe with Waffle Window. You order at the front, sit down, and bust yourself. The brisket hash was hearty. The farm fusion wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be given the thrown on spinach and cherry tomatoes. It's nice that there was vegan batter though . Definitely popular on a Sunday! read more

The food was absolutely delectable, genuinely have never had a burger more remarkable than this. The lady at the desk was really nice, and food came incredibly fast. There are lots of cool pictures on the wall and there were surprisingly not that many people there. If you ever want a good burger or waffle, then this is the MAIN PERFECT place to go. They give you a lot of fries when you order burgers. What i recommend to order is the smushburger. It's a burger with onion and bacon smashed into the patty. If you're not a fan of beef or meat, there's vegetarian options for the food as well. This review might be a little biased tbh, but I'm just a big fan of burgers and stuff. Theres stuff such as eggs, waffles, pancakes, and more awesome stuff. read more

We were headed to a highly rated and popular Italian restaurant on Valentine's Day for a light dinner before a concert at Artichoke Music. But, because parking on/around Hawthorne is atrociously difficult we had to park several blocks away. As we began our several block walk, we spied Bread and Ink, and made the spontaneous decision to eat there instead. And, we're so glad we did. The pesto rotini with grilled chicken was delicious. The fruit salad was equally delicious. We very much appreciated the low noise level, that's uncommon these days, which allowed us to converse in a normal tone of voice. The staff was friendly and prompt. read more

They were open and not busy around 10:25am on a Saturday, so we stopped in for food. The food is American diner quality and not something I would go out of my way to return for. The hashbrowns were very thin and dry, the ELO scramble was bland, didn't even taste pepper in it at first bite. The waffle was messy for a kid, the PB never firmed up leading me to believe it's PB sauce, but she loved every bite. They are not a table service restaurant. This place really surprised me. Everybody's super nice and it was really quiet. But that's what makes my head waitresses a little quirky but that's what makes it fun. I totally expected this to be one of those half-assed breakfast joints that charges top dollar because they're in the Hawthorne district. What an amazing surprise. They're biscuits and gravy is some of the best I've ever had in Portland. Better than grits and gravy, better than gravy over on Mississippi Even better than pine State. They make their biscuits fresh every morning and they're gravy fresh everyday. My wife got the Caesar salad with chicken and they actually have anchovy in the Caesar salad, you know, like a real Caesar salad. The chicken was grilled over what looked like charcoal and was phenomenal. I can't recommend this place enough. Give it a try read more

Food was yummy! Ordered an omelette with spinach and mushrooms with a side of cheesy hash browns and whole grain bread. Let me tell you..... it was so filling and delicious. Austin ordered a ham and cheese waffle that came with bacon and eggs. Food came out pretty fast. I'm a long-time Portlander. I remember what Bread and Ink used to be. I hadn't been there in about seven years. Not sure when all this changed but: 1) now you order at a counter and get your food at the counter; a waiter does not take your order nor serve you nor bring you your utensils; 2) your fancy beverages come in to-go cups rather than in proper ceramic mugs or similar; 3) the quality of the food has gone d-o-w-n. For the price, absolutely not worth it. Sad. For a better experience at the same price point, go to Jam on Hawthorne or even Juniors on SE 12th. Better service; better food; better ambiance. read more

20 percent tip added no service clear your table pick up your food they are bottom! This is a casual eatery with lots of sweet & savory waffles to choose from. You order at the counter, pick up your food yourself, and bus your own tables. Food was absolutely delicious, the ambiance and service was the only thing that could have been better. You have to order at the counter, which is absolutely fine and expected, but you also have to pick up your food at another counter and it feels more like food truck dining than in-house dining. All in all a great breakfast spot, just has weird vibes there. Maybe it's understaffed which is understandable. read more

Great local neighborhood spot. Food was excellent. It's order at the counter, set your own table, self serve water, coffee, and they don't even deliver the food- your party needs to jump up when it's ready and grab from kitchen. As much as I loved the food, I'm looking for a better overall experience, and would not go back. There are so many great breakfast spots in Portland with better service. Also, how much do you tip for that kind of experience? I hope at some point they will reconsider their service strategy. read more

The only thing that sucks more than the food are the prices. Absolutely 0 passion or pride in what they do. Couldn't even finish the $18 chicken Caesar salad with the tough ass overcooked chicken. They get one extra star for the mountain of French Fries sent out with my wife's smash burger. Advice: please start caring. Ambience sucks. Food sucks. Half service restaurants suck. I'm not a Waffle Wundow fan but the offerings of Bread & Ink Cafe looked good. So when my family went for waffles I ordered the Chopped Brisket Hash. Unfortunately, I was almost done before I thought to get a picture. It was terrific! To perfectly poached eggs, alot of chopped brisket hunks of meatless that was tender, juicy and moist. Nice chunks of roasted sweet potatoes & potatoes with poblano peppers and onions. It's a favorite for me. I may try their other brisket offerings the next time we're in town. When you visit your old stompin' grounds and a favorite restaurant, but things have changed so much that it is not what you remember or what you expected. Gone are the days of table service. Now you walk in, mosey up to the counter, pull a menu and place your order. Then you get one of those buzzer things and when it goes off you go to the counter and get it yourself. They can't even deliver your breakfast to your table. Then to top it all off they have the nerve to ask for a tip. That's not how this works and sorry I left none. They use the excuse that they don't have the staff. Well, it's because you don't want to pay them what they're worth now so you skimp while compromising service. Don't even ask me to bus my table. Now let's get to the breakfast. 2 eggs over, roasted potatoes, sourdough. The eggs were fine but the potatoes were undercooked and flavorless. With coffee you just charged me 15 bucks for no service. MmmmKay. On future visits to PDX I'll look elsewhere for my favorite meal out. read more

We use to love the waffle window now the two are combined (waffle window and bread and ink)-they have two menus with some of the same dishes not sure where the distinction isand the prices have gone a bit crazy.....23.95 for chicken and waffles.......it was decent but nothing great so that is why they get two starts, food is about. 3.5 but their prices are just kinda funny. 2 waffles and 2 flat pieces of fried chicken for that price with a very basic dining hall that I have to pick up and am expected to bus my table for is truly comical. I know costs are up but this is what makes me not want to eat out cuz I don't mind paying but this is stupid. We three ladies were walking up and down Hawthorne and became hungry at 2:00. Most places were closed between lunch and dinner. My partner and I came here for breakfast a week or so ago and it was hugely disappointing. It's pretty off putting to see such a weird change in such a classic Portland restaurant but I get it, the industry is changing. I'm okay ordering at the counter, picking up etc. but I'll be honest, 17-20+ for an entree is not a good look when the portions are meager, come out pretty cold and "service" is ordering from someone that barely even acknowledges your presence. I can sort of respect listing the ghost kitchens they represent on the door, but why am I paying inflated, delivery app prices for dine in? I paid 21.50 for Brisket Benedict and I didn't even get a nice smothering of Hollandaise. Even Jam has better portion/price. As someone who used to come here with my family (a staple dinner spot), it feels disingenuous to continue calling this place Bread & Ink when it's strayed so far from what it once was. read more

Food was average, and charging an extra $2.00 to substitute potatoes for a fruit cup is excessive-- especially when it's brown, bruised and sad looking. Clearly it's been sitting around for awhile. The cashier didn't provide any type of customer service or hospitality of any kind. In a service industry, selling to your clients with a good attitude and service is what you'd expect before asking to provide a tip for doing nothing but take your money. Never returning to this place. I'll spend my money at one of the many other places on Hawthorne street who understand how to deliver a great dining experience with quality food and top-notch personable service. read more

The food tasted Ok but came out kind of cold. We ordered biscuits and gravy and the chicken fried steak. There is no wait staff.

I ordered the crab cakes with Caesar salad. The crab cakes were ok but the salad was inconsistent with too much dressing and weird powdered cheese sprinkled on top. Honestly, the cheese looked like something out of can from the 80's. Remember the cheese from a green can you sprinkled on pasta? Yeah that's what I'm talking about. 3 trips to get water because the cups are so small. This place used to be so good. Now it's sad and always empty. This place sucks. First...service with a smile? No no, service with a side of indifferent dip$hits that have 0 personality, restaurant experience, or care about what they're doing. The restaurant is being remodeled, so no indoor seating (8/17/21) & they were operating out of Waffle Window. But worse, on the Tuesday of #PortlandBurgerWeek, despite being one of the places on the Burger Week list, THEY RAN OUT OF BURGERS around 7:00 today. So they just closed down the kitchen two hours early. Sorry Charlie, it's a pity you spent time waking from residential parking spaces. No notice, no burger for you, no waffle for you. Burger week failure IMO. Certainly an ample and nice burger. Normally I can easily eat the burger without condiments if there are a lot of things on it but I found this burger really needed one. Problem, they were out of ketchup! ( Perhaps short on the onion jam that was supposed to be on it as well?) Nice waffle fries but alas, no ketchup! And to make matters more problematic, they were out of napkins!!!! Thank you for participating in Burger Week but if you are unprepared for the business it only hurts you in the long run. read more

This place used to hit that comfort food spot with ease. What once used to be a lowkey spot with good service and quality ingredients with a taste that brightened up your day. Has recently lost its touched. A place for an unforgettable sweet and savory that used to outbeat most local places. 3 people 3 orders 1 lox plate 2 chicken and waffles = 70$ + 15%tip didn't mind the gratuity due to previous times we had dined here and loved the service...Until we got our self service plates. They do disclose that you grab your own plates, serve yourself, and bus your own tables. No problem, never minded. Being the only customers at the time with some melanin; it was really hard to miss hearing & witnessing the server that had given us a snide look when asking for more cream cheese(1st cup only had enough for 1/2 bagel. 2nd cup enough for 2 halves) for the lox plate that they had no capers for. (Which no notice was given on ingredients they were out of; yet upset when we asked for them since they were disclosed on the menu. I was under the impression that we paid for those ingredients to be present.) Male waiter( possible manager or lead) In a more cheerful tone and upbeat stride. He shouted "oh no no dont worry you stay right there im bringing this over to ya dont even get up!!" To a different group of individuals that was sitting at a table right next to us. Incredible breakfast! I had the garden frittata (minus the brisket)and my son had a spinach and cheese omelette. The homemade whole grain wheat bread and strawberry preserve was a perfect start as we waited for our main entree. My frittata had brocolli, zucchini, mushrooms and cheese. Perfectly cooked with a nice crisp edge to the frittata and the flavors of seasoning were very complimentary. I had the roasted potatoes, again a delicious blend of seasonings and cooked just right. My son had the hashbrowns with his omelette and he ate every bite down to the last crumb. Coffee was good and the customer service was exemplary. Attentive, had great suggestions and truly made us feel welcome. Cozy seating with a relaxed chill vibe. Definitely will be a new "go to" place when we are in town. read more

Five stars are for the bartender that replaced all of our black charred bacon. If the kitchen is letting black charred bacon leave the kitchen, I think that they need to be better at servicing their customers. The huckleberry pancakes were inconsistent for each person in our party - semi burned to too doughy. Eggs were fine. It's a pay at counter, pick up your own food and beverages and bus your own table kind of place. The food is pricey - $15 for huckleberry pancakes, two eggs and choice of meat (bacon, sausage or ham). Might go back to try the waffles. Lastly, the ambiance is fine and they have very clean restrooms. read more
